Atmanirbhar's private sector focus might be the most important project we've engaged in since the Gnat/Marut/Kiran era which kick started HAL and the PSU system that we have today. If it succeeds, the effect would be monumental. We'll finally move away from the damn Soviet model and maybe seed our own Boeing or Airbus.

From the link
The Indian Navy on Thursday (August 14) inked a deal with the Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority to set up a “centre of excellence” in the state’s defence corridor to help promote innovation and indigenisation for self-reliance in the defence sector.
In the real world, an Admin Manager would just rent a couple of floors from DLF or anyone else in Noida and start work, that in Governmentocracy requires Defence Minister, Chief Minister, Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Naval Staff and other gold plated Admirals to do. A sad reflection of state of affairs.

Godrey Group has been doing exemplary work for the Indian Defense Forces.Group company Godrej and Boyce has contributed to the Brahmos program in a big way. Surprisingly i have never seen them doing press releases of how the group wants to target Defense as a vertical for growth. They simply deliver and do not talk big. Kudos to them. Wish there were more committed Industrial houses Like Godrej, L&T and Bharat Forge in India.

OFB leeches have surfaced to abuse the army and dislike this interview by Maj. Gaurav Arya (Retd.) regarding the corporatization of OFB.

Looking at their attitude (read the comments) one wonders why this organization should be allowed to continue sucking money from Indian taxpayers, and make products that often kill our own soldiers by malfunction or non-function.

Midhani masters armour that can stop AK-47 shots.

At a time when India has started facing some tough challenges along the Line of Actual Control with China, an exclusive armour unit to manufacture
bullet-proof jackets of international standards and protective gear and to supply bullet-proof vehicles will come up at Mishra Dhatu Nigam Ltd
(Midhani) in Hyderabad’s Kanchanbagh area.

The bullet-proof jackets are named ‘Bhabha kavach’ since the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) had developed the technology. These
jackets can evenstop a bullet fired from an AK-47 as well. A few hundred bulletproof jackets have already been supplied to the paramilitary forces
as samples.

“We have mastered the technology to deliver these bullet-proof jackets in huge quantities. We will also be keeping an eye on the ammunition that is developed across the world and make suitable changes accordingly to upgrade the jackets,” Midhani chairman and managing director Sanjay Kumar Jha told TOI.

Image

The bulletproof jackets that are manufactured in Midhani meet the specifications of the Union ministry of home affairs and also the BIS level-6.
Sanjay Kumar said time has come for Midhani to diversify, including having a full-fledged armour plant which will have in addition to bullet-proof jackets, vehicle armoury and also protective gear for the armed forces.

An armoured vehicle which TOI saw at Midhani has features that security agencies will find suitable for use in challenging situations. For example, even if a tyre were to be shot at, the vehicle would still be able to travel a distance of 100 km. This, in technical parlance, is called ‘runflat tyres’ system. The vehicle, described as first-ever Isuzu-based combat vehicle, has several other features too. While its carrying capacity with weapons is seven persons, the vehicle can be used as a quick response team, escort vehicle, troops carrier in counter-insurgency operations and for other operational duties.

Centre’s Atmanirbhar Bharat concept has come as a shot in the arm for the defence public sector enterprise as preference will have to be given to it instread of going for imports. Since Midhani has mastered the technology and proven that it can supply bullet-proof jackets produced indigenously, experts said the armed forces and security agencies could make purchases from Midhani.

This is excellent news. BIS Level-6 is defined as as capable of stopping 7.62x54R API (Armour Piercing) round as per IS 17051:2018. This is comparable to NIJ Level-IV. The army too is preparing for next round of purchase.

DRDO plans Star Wars-style weapons for battles of future.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is now planning a national programme on directed energy weapons (DEWs) like high-energy lasers and high-powered microwaves, which are increasingly being considered crucial around the world for the contactless conflicts of the future.

The national programme will have short, medium and long-term goals, with the eventual aim being to develop different DEW variants of up to 100 kilowatt power, in collaboration with the domestic industry, sources said.

The DRDO has been working on several DEW projects for long, ranging from ‘chemical oxygen iodine’ and ‘high-power fibre’ lasers to a secretive ‘Kali’ particle-beam weapon for ‘soft-kills’ against incoming missiles and aircraft.

Image

But they are nowhere near becoming operational. The need for a focussed approach on DEWs has now gained urgency amid the ongoing military confrontation with China in eastern Ladakh.

DRDO has so far developed two anti-drone DEW systems, which will now be productionised in large numbers with the help of the industry. While one is a trailer-mounted DEW, with a 10 kilowatt laser to engage aerial targets at 2-km range, the other is a compact tripod-mounted one with a 2 kilowatt laser for a 1-km range.

Successfully demonstrated to the armed forces, intelligence agencies and police forces in field operations, the two systems can bring down micro drones by either jamming their command and control links or damaging their electronics through the laser-based DEW, officials said.

These indigenous systems, however, are extremely modest compared to the much more powerful DEWs developed by countries like the US, Russia, China, Germany and Israel to destroy multiple drones, vehicles and boats.

The US, for instance, tested a 33 kilowatt laser weapon from a warship to shoot down drones several years ago. More recently, in May, the US Navy tested a new ‘high-energy solid-state laser’ to disable a drone aircraft in mid-air. The US, in fact, may be just four to five years away from deploying 300 to 500 kilowatt DEWs capable of shooting down cruise missiles.

The Indian defence establishment’s technological roadmap for the next decade says the Army and IAF need at least 20 ‘tactical high-energy laser systems’ that can destroy ‘small aerial targets’, electronic warfare and radars systems at a range of 6-8 km in Phase-I.

In Phase-II, the laser systems should have a range of over 20 km to take on ‘soft-skinned’ vehicles and troops from ground and aerial platforms. Similarly, at least 20 high-power electromagnetic weapon systems are required for the forces, with 6-8 km range in Phase-I and over 15-km in Phase-II.

As reported by TOI last month, the ongoing Army study on ‘niche and disruptive warfare technologies’ has identified DEWs as one of the focus areas, with General M M Naravane stressing the need to invest heavily in such futuristic tools. But it will take a lot for such concentrated energy weapons to become an operational reality.

Lot of technologies developed to deal with cold weather in northern mountains.

A lot of technologies have been developed to deal with the extreme cold weather in the country's northern mountains and the armed forces are using all of them, DRDO chairman G Satheesh Reddy said on Thursday.

These range from technologies developed for clothing for the armed forces to predicting avalanches, he said during a webinar organised by the India Foundation.

To a question on are the armed forces prepared to deal with the harsh winter as more forces are being moved to Ladakh amid border tensions there, Reddy said, "In the northern mountain region...about the snow and all that... lot of technologies have been developed towards that, whether the clothing that is required, the shoes which are required, or the heating elements which are required, things related to heating of food.”

"Many things have been developed, including avalanche and snow prediction. Many things which are required for that have been developed in the country and they are all being used by the armed forces today," the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) chairman said.

The Ladakh region witnesses extreme cold weather and during the winters, temperatures fall far below the freezing point.

Tensions have escalated in the Pangong lake area after China unsuccessfully attempted to occupy certain areas in the southern bank of the lake. India has rushed in additional troops and weapons to the sensitive region.

On Monday, the Indian army said the Chinese military carried out "provocative military movements" to "unilaterally" change the status quo on the southern bank of Pangong lake on the intervening night of August 29 and 30 but the attempt was thwarted by the Indian troops.

Earlier, in the Galwan Valley clash between the armies of India and China on June 20 Indian army personnel including a colonel were killed. China has not yet released any casualty figures.

Since the clashes tensions are on the rise on the northern border along China.

MODs please excuse.. am cross posting this from the economic forum.

It's a request to all, to see if any help can be extended to this gentleman

I (and others) have posted multiple times about his ongoing dogged efforts to build his (and India's) civilian transport for the past 2 decades...

A few months just before COVID19 hit, there was some positive movement.. he had met PM Modi, the state ministers etc and it seemed like he would finally get the support..

-----------------

The continuing trials (of perseverance) of Cpt. Amol Yadav, to build his transport plane...

Sobering read...

Image

Can you help this Indian make aviation history?
'This project started with my mom mortgaging her mangalsutra.' 'I have been successfully keeping my dream alive by mortgaging my brother's house.'

If 15 million Indians decide to contribute just one rupee each, (yes you tread it right; just one rupee), Captain Amol Shivaji Yadav, who has built an indigenous six-seater airplane can finish the second mandatory test flight at 2,000 feet after which, in about six months, his company Thrust Aircraft Company can manufacture 100 airplanes in about an year.

If that wouldn't make aviation history in India by an Indian, what will?

"My dream of making airplanes in India, by an Indian, is at stake for me," says the 44-year-old ex-jet Airways pilot, who has built the TAC003 on the terrace of his house in Kandivali, north west Mumbai.

After spending more than 19 years to just get the permission to fly and about Rs 6 crore (Rs 60 million) of his and his family's hard-earned money, Captain Yadav is struggling to get another Rs 15 million to complete the 2,000 feet test flight by maneuvering the aircraft at that altitude as per Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) norms. "I just need about one-and-a-half crore rupees; if I have it, I will just go ahead and finish it off tomorrow," Captain Yadav tells Prasanna D Zore/Rediff.com when asked how prepared he is for this second test and the hurdle he needs to cross to do it.
How are you managing the funds? Is that a big challenge?

I have not been getting any funds. I have received nothing. I have received no help from nobody. As simple and straightforward as that!

How much have you spent on your first test flight?
We have spent about Rs 6 crore till today, together. It's all my money, my family, my friends.

No help from either the state government or the Union government?
Nobody has helped yet, except three gentlemen: one Mr Dinesh, Mr Kamlakar and Mr Lalit Kale.

If you want to contribute towards helping an Indian create aviation history, you can contact Captain Amol Shivaji Yadav at 9320032733.

Rs. 1.5 cr or even Rs 6 cr is not a big deal for industrialists and investors in the country.
He should be easily able to get it if he has a good business case for manufacturing and selling his aircraft.

The plane looks like a basic small propeller aircraft the kind of which was first made in 1930s
Hard to claim that it is groundbreaking technology of any kind.

The news also claims that he is running an aircraft manufacturing factory. Which begs the question is what sort of aircraft manufacturing factory is he running if he can't scrounge together 1.5cr for development of an aircraft. I have seen small SMEs making washers, clips, gears and such with 100+ crore turnover.

I acknowledge the trials and hardships faced by aerospace/defense entrepreneurs and businessmen in the country ( I am one myself ). But this story always seemed a bit weird.

Superb effort to go solo and make a plane. But the most important question is, what is the market for such an aircraft? Depends on its capacity, performances, range etc.

From his website: http://www.thrustaircraft.com

Product TAC_003
Crew and passenger 6(1 pilot and 5 passenger)
Length 31 ft 3 in
Wingspan 37 ft 1 in
Height 10ft 8 in
Wing Area 162 ft
Empty Weight 1450 kgMax.
Take of Weight 2010 kg
Power plant 350 Hp Engine
Never exceed speed 192 knots
Maximum speed 185 knots
Stall speed 66 knots
Range 1800km
Service Ceiling 13000ft
Rate of Climb 1500 ft/min
Wing Loading 27.31lb/ft²
Safety Equipment BRS Parachute
Endurance 5 hr

India has a very small market for aviation hobbyists / small flying companies who can afford to buy a plane for recreational/short hop flying, unlike the US and to a lesser extent, Europe.

What other segments could be looking for such a plane? If anyone knows, please share.

He hasn't claimed it is groundbreaking in any way technologically, just that it would be ground breaking for an indian company (rather a private individual).

About the business sense part, he is said to be from a lower middle class background. Said to have worked hard and become a pilot.. ex Jet Airways IIRC. He comes across as more of an engineer/techie than an entrepreneur with a marketing flair... as compared to say Cpt. Gopinath

@Amar_p - He had said in earlier interviews that he wanted to primarily target the tier2/tier 3 city, short haul connectivity flights.

Kineco flags-off India’s first commercial Sonar Dome for Indian Navy
https://www.heraldgoa.in/Business/Kinec ... avy/165585

PANJIM: Goa-based Kineco Limited, a leading composite technology provider for defence, aerospace, railway and industrial sectors, flagged off India’s first-ever commercial Sonar Dome, at the hands of Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant on Tuesday.

The Sonar Dome is a critical component of a warship as it houses the Sonar (Sonar Navigation and Ranging) Array - which is used for detection, navigation, and ranging. The Sonar Dome, manufactured by Kineco was flagged off to its esteemed customer Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited Mumbai (MDL), where it will be mounted on the Indian Navy’s P15 Alpha Warship.

A sad reflection of state of affairs.
its likely the same for any other democracy with armed forces except maybe places like paapistan.
