[Indian Railways Plans To Complete ‘160 Kmph Speed’ Project Ahead Of Schedule
by Arun Kumar Das-Aug 6, 2020 12:49 PM

In view of the less number of trains in operation, Indian Railways has decided to utilise the situation to complete the ambitious project of raising train speed to 160 kilometre per hour between the busy Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata routes by March 2022, much ahead of its scheduled target of September 2023.

In a letter to all departments concerned, Northern Railway has asked to start planning out the details for upgrading the infrastructure to operate trains at a speed of 160 kmph so that work starts from the next month in right earnest to meet the latest target.

In order to ensure the speedy implementation, the status of the 160 kmph project would be discussed in the railways weekly coordination meeting.

"It was desired that the work should be completed latest by September 2023 and preferably in the next 18 months," the letter dated 3 August stated.

Similar instructions from other zones involved in the two major routes like North Central Railway are believed to have been issued to departments concerned including electrical, mechanical, civil engineering, signal and telecom to speed up the implementation of the over Rs 1,600 crore project approved by the Cabinet last year.
.
.
The work involves track and signalling upgrades, elimination of unmanned level-crossings and fencing along the two major trunk routes of 1,384 km Delhi-Mumbai corridor and 1,450 km Delhi-Kolkata route.

Departments should plan out the blocks to be taken so as to complete the work in next 18 months and start lining up the necessary resources including contractual agencies to start to block working from September 2020, the letter instructed.

Fencing is a must for semi-high speed corridors as it prevents human or cattle crossings on the tracks and ensures higher speed and safety.
According to sources, the arduous task of fencing alone will cost about Rs 2,200 crore on the major trunk routes.

^^^^Pre Covid Railway Board had issued guidelines to all zones to prepare all routes along the GQ for 130 kmph speeds by Feb 2021. This entails COCR runs by RDSO and then submitting data collected on COCR runs to the certification authorities like the zonal CRS. I doubt this can be achieved though certain sections as I have pointed out have achieved these benchmarks. There are numerous problems in the ghat sections on the Delhi--Mumbai line both WR and CR where 130 kmph speeds canot be achieved due to turns and steep gradients. More on that in my post lower down. I do not want to give a detailed exegesis of which sections entail what difficulties and what remedies if at all can be implemented to increase sectional speeds but will simply encourage you to study the linked table. For example Chennai--Mumbai the sections under Guntakal division from Renigunta to almost Gulbarga passed the COCR tests with flying colors, but Solapur division the usual laggard still has single line unelectrified tracks that will take 2 years to be doubled and electrified and though track replacement using PQRS machines has taken place and old bridges rebuilt by using RCC boxes many of the bridges on the backwaters of the Bhima dam have to be jacketed to allow the double track to be laid for such higher speeds. So some parts of the GQ will take at least 2 years. Even then some parts of the GQ will never
be capable of supporting 130 kmph speeds ever.

https://www.railpost.in/130-kmph-sectio ... tough-ask/

To achieve higher speeds in the 160 kmph range, the ruling gradient must not exceed 1: 170 and curves cannot have a curvature more than 1.5. There are many curves on the GQ that exceed this and ruling gradients certainly exceed this on many sections of the GQ like between Bhopal and Itarsi where one has ruling gradients of 1:80 on the down line towards Itarsi/Mumbai and 1: 125 on the Up line towards Bhopal and Delhi, leave alone ghat sections like Igatpuri--Kasara where it is 1:35 and very steep.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Some posters with no knowledge and severely technically challenged are posting bunkum about new lines being constructed and have no idea about the detailed reports that have to be done by surveying authorities and which are then placed in public(heck why do you not google it ) about line surveys for third line through forest preserves. I told you about my visit to Bhimbhetka to see rock art and this is in the Ratapani wild life preserve in Raisen and Sehore districts of MP. Third line between Bhopal and Itarsi is coming up here and these reports go in great depth as to how to meet the twin competing requirements of addressing the frail ecology and maintaining a ruling gradient of 1:170 and lower for possible 160 kmph operations in future. There are detailed possibilities for every alignment, in this case 3 alignments were suggested. IR has gone in for the worst possible alignment where 160 kmph is not an option but wild life takes precedence. Ruling gradients are steeper.
This line is the heart of the network since Delhi-Mumbai/Chennai/Hyderabad lines go through it. One has to make a choice as the route is overburdened. So if you do not know just save us the rants.

Explained In Brief: The Importance Of Indian Railways' 'Super Anaconda' Trials
This tweet of the South East Central Railway (SECR) on 27 July, conveying that it had successfully run the ‘Super Anaconda’ formation with six WAG9 locomotives, would go down in the annals of railway history.

The name ‘Super Anaconda’ was given to the 2.1 km long, loaded freight train having six locos, of 6,000 horsepower (hp) each, hauling 177 loaded wagons over a distance of 525 km. That made it more than 15,000 tons hauled by 36,000 hp of motive power.

Earlier, on 29 June, a similar composition was run, but what made the July trial historic was the fact that the entire train was controlled by a single set of crew, like a routine train is controlled.

The mechanism of remotely controlling locomotives had been used by several leading heavy haul railways globally. For India, the solution being offered by MNCs was prohibitively expensive.

Hence, in collaboration with Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) for diesels and Chittaranjan Locomotive Works for electrics, this product was indigenised and at least three Indian companies developed this in India itself.

@vsunder saar first of all Pranams to you for your encyclopedic knowledge on the subject matter.

Still it is not fully clear to me whether above quoted harsh words were directed towards me or not. :!: :?:

Assuming it was directed towards me, I will say it was uncalled for. As I have not posted any commentary of my own on higher speeds or line additions by IR. I have just posted few recent news articles related to Indian railways for records purpose and to keep the thread updated.
That's it.

You being an oldie & one of the guru here in BRF it was not suitable for your stature to spend such words.

Once again Pranams & Jai Sri Ram.

JSPL starts supply of special grade rail tracks for new phase of Kolkata Metro.

Jindal Steel & Power Limited (JSPL) has started supply of 1,080 grade Head Hardened rails to Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL ) for the completion of Kolkata Metro's Joka-Esplanade corridor. JSPL became the first domestic company to supply specially treated indigenous 1,080 grade Head Hardened rails for completion of new phase of Kolkata Metro corridors.

Earlier, Metro Rail corporations and Western Dedicated Freight Corridor used to import Head Hardened rails from Japan and Europe for construction of highspeed tracks. These rails have been specially manufactured at JSPL's Raigarh plant and trains can run on these tracks at a speed of up to 250 km per hour.

JSPL was selected by RVNL after a bidding process to supply 3,000 MT of Head Hardened rails for Kolkata Metro rail tracks. So far, JSPL has supplied 1300 MT of 1080 grade Head Hardened rails to RVNL, while the remaining amount of 1700 MT will be made within a week, an official statement from JSPL said.

Research Design and Standard Organization (RDSO) has approved the 1080 grade HH rails of JSPL’s Raigarh Rail mill. The 1080 Head Hardened grade Rails is also approved by the internationally accredited agency TUV-Nord-Luxembourg.

V R Sharma, Managing Director, JSPL said: "The technology to produce these head hardened rails is imported from Germany. Soon we will supply grade 1175 HT for heavyweight traic rail tracks for Indian railways." JSPL has the technological capability and capacity to meet the entire requirement of domestic projects for Head Hardened and HT rails, he added

Eye in the sky: Ninja drones to protect rail assets
NEW DELHI: The Railways has procured Ninja unmanned aerial vehicles for monitoring its assets and ensure safety for passengers, railways minister Piyush Goyal has said.
The Mumbai Division of Central Railway has recently procured two Ninja UAVs for better security and surveillance in railway areas like station premises, railway track sections, yards, workshops.
"Eye in the Sky: Improving Surveillance System, Railways has recently procured Ninja Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. With real-time tracking, video streaming & automatic failsafe mode, the drones will enhance monitoring of the railway assets and ensure additional safety for passengers," Goyal said in a tweet.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has planned extensive use of drones for the purpose of railway security, a statement from the ministry said.
Nine drones have been procured by RPF so far at a cost of Rs 31.87 Lakh at South Eastern Railway, Central Railway, Modern Coaching Factory, Raebareilli and South Western Railway, it said.
It is further proposed to procure 17 more drones in future at a cost of Rs 97.52 Lakh. Nineteen RPF personnel have so far been trained in operation and maintenance of drones out of which four have received licenses for flying drones. Six more RPF personnel are being trained, the ministry said.
The purpose of the drone deployment is to provide a force multiplier and aid the deployed security personnel, it said.
While it can help in inspection of Railway assets and safety of yards, workshops, car sheds, it can also be used to launch surveillance on criminal and anti-social activities like gambling, throwing of garbage, hawking in railway premises, it added.
"It may be deployed for data collection, analysis of such data collected may prove to be extremely useful in vulnerable sections for safe operations of trains. The drone may be pressed in service at disaster sites for helping in rescue, recovery and restoration and coordinating of efforts of various agencies," the ministry said.
"It is very useful while undertaking mapping of railway asset to assess the encroachments on railway property. During large scale crowd management efforts, it may give vital inputs like crowd magnitude, probable time of arrival and dispersal based on which crowd regulation efforts may be planned and executed," the statement said. "Drones were used to enforce lockdown and monitor the movement of migrants during the COVID-19 lockdown," it said.
A drone camera can cover large areas which requires 8-10 RPF personnel. Thus, it may lead to substantial improvement in utilisation of scarce manpower.
Drone beats have been designed based on railway asset, sensitivity of area, activity of criminals. Any suspicious activity if noticed is intimated to the nearest RPF post of division to apprehend the criminal live.
One such criminal was apprehended on a real time basis in Wadibunder Yard area while he was trying to commit theft inside railway coach stationed in the yard, the Railways said.

Vande Bharat tender cancelled. Fresh tenders to be issued again.
The Indian Railways has cancelled a tender to procure 44 train sets of Vande Bharat express, as the government looks to restrict Chinese participation in the tender.

The move comes after Chinese state owned company CRRC Corporation bid for the tender last month. BHEL and Medha Engineering were among other players who had bid for the project.

“It seems like China was getting into the bid,” a senior railway oicial told ET. "This is another step towards atma nirbhar Bharat," the person added.

“Tender for manufacturing of 44 sets of semi high speed train set (Vande Bharat) has been cancelled,” an official statement issued by the railway ministry late Friday evening said.

The move is another set back to the ambitious project of the government. Differences have emerged between the railway ministry and the ICF over the timeline for introduction of these trains. While the ministry planned the introduction of these trains in 2021-22, a recent estimate by ICF revealed that it could take over six years for the trains to come on track..
Petti-mindedness and jealousy of railway officers against Sudanshu Mani who successfully introduced Vande Bharat is costing India dear. These officers under the fig leaf excuse of procedures and rules have sought to nix the project. If Mani/ICF had introduced the train with domestic inputs(from Medha Engineering) then what is the need to look for other players now? If Mani had not retired we would have numerous Vande Bharats crisscrossing the country and also work on Train 20 would have progressed.

More than a month after a state-owned Chinese rolling stock major emerged as the sole foreign company in the bid to manufacture 44 Vande Bharat trainsets, Indian Railways Friday cancelled the tender and said a fresh tender will be called within a week as per India’s revised public procurement policy. The policy took shape over the past month or so in the wake of tension with China over a border standoff.
Other contenders among the total six bidders included Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, Hyderabad-based Medha Group — one of the makers of the existing Vande Bharat rakes — Electrowaves Electronic Pvt Ltd and Mumbai-based Powernetics Equipments Pvt Ltd.
Somehow only the chinese made it
Haven't seen the tender details, but how this is possible?

Technicality, not China link, led to scrapping of Vande Bharat tender: Railways
NEW DELHI: The tender for manufacture of 44 semi-high speed Vande Bharat train sets was scrapped because three bidders had revealed the price in their technical bids and not because a Chinese company had bid for the project as a joint venture partner of an Indian firm.
Railway board chairman VK Yadav said, "During evaluation of the technical bids, the technical committee noticed some details of financial offers had been revealed in the technical bids. This is not the practice. To maintain complete transparency, the tender committee recommended to cancel this tender and invite fresh tender. Bids will be invited within a week."
Responding to whether the companies that revealed prices would be barred from future bidding, Yadav said they have been asked to clarify on this issue.
He added the fresh tender will be as per revised public procurement order, which specifies preference to Make in India.
"We are aware that we have lost at least three months. But we are confident we will get these trains before the deadline set. The new tender will specify how many train sets will be manufactured at production units in Chennai, Kapurthala and Rae Bareli," Yadav said. He added that railways will incorporate changes due to the Covid-19 requirements in the train set design.

The railway board chairman's reply sounded unconvincing. Just what is precisely is meant by financial details. If this was a technical bid what precise question in the tender elicited a financial answer. These bidders are not novices. It is a bit far fetched that a bidder would have mentioned irrelevant information.

This is real world comparison as much as it can get between an able & motivated technocrat to achieve something & how much time will babudom take to do the same thing if at all. It shows that a new concept train can be become reality from drawing board to actual run within 18 months. Technology, design & engineering is not a problem. Problem is a system which cannot take advantage of talented people like Mr. Mani, but rather promotes lethargy & mediocrity & even punishes innovation. This is not a small scale babu dept infighting. This train was launched with national fanfare. People roadblocking it & setting up enquiries against people who made Train-18 possible should've been made an example of by the politician in Delhi. But it shows that at the end babu is more powerful than the politician. Other Mr. Manis in other depts will say chuck it we will get our pension & live without any enquiry against it rather than do something. Make In India has mostly been a non-starter & this prime example of Make in India was nipped in the bud & whatever is left is being strangulated by the bureaucratic ten headed snake. Rail Min & PMO is just standing on the sidelines, unwilling or unable to do anything substantial to bring it back to life. Train can be made in 18 months but babu process will take another 36+ months. Same thing with defence related projects of National importance. LCH/LCA negotiations are going for eons when enemy is at the door, which is basically a GoI to GoI transaction, but they will fight like it has to come out of their own pockets. Just what they've been taught; not to negotiate as per the situation, but to delay as much as they can for fig leaf of a rule or procedure.

None of the piddly reforms matter unless the bureaucracy is deep cleansed & white washed as per requirements of today's India.10% growth will come automatically.

This entire tender is a travesty. It was not needed. Usual babu nonsense about rules and procedures coming in the way of an excellent desi system - Train 18. The railway minister needs to be pulled up by the PMO to allow this farce in the first place. Even now they are going in for a new tender, when they can just select the Train-18 directly. There is no indigenous competitor to it.

When British left India in 1947 they were building a rail link to Mussoorie and beyond. The line still sits there rotting, in the northern reaches of Dehradun. It took us just 70 years to reignite the plan but its moving atleast.

DFC delay: Railways blames contractors, law & order issues, slow land acquisition by states
PTI Last Updated: Aug 27, 2020, 12:05 PM IST

New Delhi: Days after the PMO raised concerns over delay in its dedicated freight corridors, the Railways has identified sluggish work by contractors, the law and order situation at some places and slow progress in land acquisition by states among the key bottlenecks for this ambitious project.
....
.
.
.

While the original deadline for completion of these DFCs was December 2021, the Railways recently said it has been pushed back by six months to June 2022 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

BENGALURU: Nearly five months after the trial runs were approved by the Railway Board, the first Roll On-Roll Off (RO-RO) service between Nelamangala in Bengaluru and Bale in Solapur district will make its debut this Sunday (August 30).

This will be first such service in South Western Railway (SWR) and Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and MoS Railways Suresh C Angadi will launch the train remotely from their respective locations. "A total of 1260 tonnes, comprising agricultural, chemical and industrial items have been loaded in its maiden run," Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (Bengaluru Division), AN Krishna Reddy told The New Indian Express.

Okayed by the Board on April 2, Angadi was keen on launching it at the earliest to facilitate transport of essentials in bulk between States in the midst of the raging pandemic. However, the absence of a ramp to take the trucks onboard the train and a good connecting road at Solapur station delayed the launch of the service.

The RO-RO train has a total of 43 open wagons and it can carry 43 or more trucks depending on the size of the vehicle. It will traverse 682 kms between Nelamangala and Bale and covering three railway zones -
Central Railway, South Central Railway and the SWR, said another railway official.

Each round trip will take six days and will pass via Wadi and Dharmavaram. Reddy said, "Our freight charges are Rs 2700 per tonne for each round trip. A total of 30 tonnes is permitted per truck." Jitendra Realty and Infrastructure Private Limited, which built the ramp and the road in the midst of the Corona pandemic, is the freight aggregator for the service.

Yogendra Sharma, who prepared the Detailed Project Report, had told TNIE earlier, "Reduction of road traffic and reduction in fuel consumption are major benefits. Since the train carries the truck, it is akin to door-to-door delivery of goods," he said.

A driver and another individual can accompany the truck and they have to purchase second class tickets for the journey. The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has been running this Ro-Ro service between Suratkal and Kolad (143 km from Mumbai) for a few years.

After Delhi-Varanasi high speed line, NHSRCL invites tenders for DPR of 890km Delhi-Ahmedabad section
The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) on Tuesday (1 September) invited its first set of tenders for the proposed 887 km long Delhi-Jaipur-Udaipur-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor to kick-start preparations for formulating its detailed project report, The Economic Times reported.

NHSRCL floated an online open tender on Tuesday for preparation of drawings of crossing bridges over rivers/canals/railways and roads (Expressway, NH and SH and major district roads) and general arrangement drawings (GADs) of proposed stations and maintenance depots, carrying out ridership study (traffic study) and data collection and associated survey work for DPR of the corridor.

The proposed Delhi-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor is planned along major expressway, national highways, greenfield areas and may be passing through arterial roads of the intermediate city road network. Large number of bridges for crossing rivers, canals, railways and roads shall be required along the proposed alignment of the High Speed Rail Corridor. There are 12 stations planned in the proposed corridor including Delhi and Ahmedabad. There are 12 Maintenance Depots planned along the corridor.

Delhi-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor is among the eight high-speed networks that the Railways is planning across the country, one of which — the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail (HSR) — is under construction.

Bullet train faces 5-year delay: High costs, Japan firms not so keen.

FROM LOW participation by Japanese companies to tenders cancelled because of steep rates quoted by bidders, India’s first bullet train project is stuck on multiple fronts — and staring at a delay of around five years.

The Indian Express has learnt that the Railways now expects the project to be commissioned fully by October 2028, instead of the original timeline of December 2023. The revised timeline has been estimated after talks with the Japanese team that is working on the project, sources said.

“We can maybe compress the timeline to some extent if all the outstanding issues are resolved quickly. But in such a complex technical project, the timeline cannot be compressed to a great extent,” a senior official told The Indian Express.

The 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor is being constructed with an 80 per cent loan from Japan at 0.1 per cent interest and a 15-year moratorium, with the system to be built mostly with Japanese technology on the lines of the Shinkansen.

India had been keen on opening at least a portion of the project by August 2022, to coincide with 75 years of Independence. And the Railways officially maintains that the original timeline is still in place.

“As per the feasibility study, the target date for the completion of the project is December 2023,” said a spokesperson of the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the implementing agency, which was set up in 2016 with equity participation by the Rail Ministry and the Maharashtra and Gujarat governments.

However, The Indian Express has learnt that the tender for the most crucial section — a 21-km underground stretch, including a seven-km section under the sea near Mumbai — did not find Japanese participation and could not be finalised in the first attempt earlier this year.

Besides, in many of the 11 tenders originally meant to be executed by Japanese companies, the prices quoted were up to 90 per cent higher than estimates indicated by the project consultants. India has refused to accept the huge escalation, it is learnt.

The construction of the 21-km stretch alone would require large, advanced boring machines that would employ a special technical method to safeguard a flamingo sanctuary nearby in Maharashtra — this would require over 60 months to complete, as per latest assessments.

The other area of concern is procurement of rolling stock. As per the Japanese, only Kawasaki and Hitachi are eligible to supply the trains. However, it was found out that both companies could jointly submit only one bid, leading to a single-tender situation, which the Indian side wanted to either avoid or a call to be taken “at the highest level”, sources said.

A Joint Committee Meeting between India and Japan, which could not take place earlier this year before the Covid outbreak, is expected to resolve the outstanding issues as they are beyond the purview of the Ministry or the implementing agency, sources said.

“A clearer picture on the possible delay will emerge only after the next Joint Committee Meeting between the two countries,” an official said.

Sources also said that the stepping down of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe due to health reasons will not officially affect the deliberations. However, they acknowledged that it was Abe’s personal rapport with Prime Minister Narendra Modi that helped push the project in many critical areas.

According to the original feasibility study, work was supposed to have started by December 2017. But currently, only about 100 hectares of the required 430 hectares have been acquired in Maharashtra. In Gujarat, owing to active support of the state government, the process to acquire close to 1,000 hectares will be complete by the year-end.

The Railways has also taken a policy decision to allow Indian companies to participate in tenders for civil construction, including the 21-km tunnel stretch and tracks. Three critical civil work tenders for the Mumbai station, and other large sections of the project, are scheduled to be opened in September.

Referring to the progress achieved so far, the NHSRCL spokesperson said: “About 63 per cent land has been acquired for the project and tenders for civil works for 345 km out of 508 km alignment (68 per cent of civil works) are already floated. This includes six stations (including one underground station in Mumbai). The works related to utility diversion are progressing well and the construction of Sabarmati passenger hub in Sabarmati has also started. The hostel building of High Speed Training Institute (which is presently being used for Covid patients) and training tracks in Vadodara are also completed.”

I can assure you from Gujarat Stand Point. The project is in full swing. If memory serves me correct, most of the land acquisition is finished or near finished.

Yes. COVID is slow down the momentum, but it has gathered pace of completing the remaining land acquisitions and tendering process is starting. Other then minute few “motivated” Farmers, nearly rest all are eagerly ready to give their land for this project.

The Indian Express story is not very convincing. To quote the crucial part:
However, The Indian Express has learnt that the tender for the most crucial section — a 21-km underground stretch, including a seven-km section under the sea near Mumbai — did not find Japanese participation and could not be finalised in the first attempt earlier this year. Unquote.
That section may be crucial but unless its completion is within the 'critical path' of execution why would that hold up the completion? Also, what is the cost of this section that a tenderer has quoted higher than the estimate? The problematic section cannot have a overwhelming weightage in a project that is expected to cost in the region of Rs 1,00,000 crore. I am not saying that 2022 completion date is realistic. It is just that the evidence marshalled by IE is not conclusive.

With SS and Sharad Pawar in power no infra project in MH is going to move anymore unless all the right pockets are lined, and the Japanese companies may not have the stomach for it. Only project I'm not concerned about much is the Mumbai-Nagpur expressway because the SS decided to give Bal Thackeray's name to it (despite it being Fadnavis's brainchild). The Bullet train project is not going to be that lucky.

Illegal Software Racket Called 'Real Mango', To Corner Confirmed Train Tickets, Busted By RPF; Many Touts Arrested
https://swarajyamag.com/news-brief/ille ... s-arrested
Continuing with the crackdown on touts involved in a rail ticketing racket, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has busted an illegal software operation called “Real Mango” — used for cornering confirmed train reservation during the coronavirus pandemic.

The software has now been fully decimated and the RPF has apprehended around 50 criminals so far across West Bengal, Assam, Bihar and Gujarat, the Director-General, Railway Protection Force, Arun Kumar, said.

Train tickets worth over Rs 5 lakh have been blocked during the operation.

The phenomenon of touts cornering confirmed train tickets has been confronting the Railways for long.

Since the nationalisation of railways in 1951, passenger trains had been a government monopoly. In October 2019, as a pilot project, the railways allowed its subsidiary IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) to own the Tejas Express train and have private operators run it on the New Delhi-Lucknow route. But the concept achieved limited success. Now, the proposal for passenger trains both operated and owned by private players promises to be a game-changer....

Indian Railways is set to take a giant leap for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’. The Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has collaborated with SwissRapid AG to introduce magnetic levitation (Maglev) trains to India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the historical Kosi Rail Mega Bridge to the nation and inaugurated new rail lines and electrification projects in Bihar via video-conferencing. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal was present at the event.

“These projects will improve Bihar’s railway network and also strengthen connectivity in areas of West Bengal and West India,” PM Modi said.

Bihar deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi said that these rail lines will connect Jain and Buddhist pilgrimage sites and encourage tourism in Bihar.

“The bridge has strategic importance along the India-Nepal border. The historical project to build the bridge, which is 1.9 kilometres long and has been constructed at a cost of Rs 516 crore, was sanctioned by the Centre in 2003-04,” a government release said.

2 more bullet train tenders opened today

3 Bidders for Mumbai – Ahmedabad HSR’s Package C6
https://themetrorailguy.com/2020/09/25/ ... ackage-c6/
Just like Package C4 on Wednesday, India’s National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL) today received 3 bids to construct the 87.569 km Package C6 of the 508.17 km Mumbai – Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR Bullet Train) project which’ll connect both cities through 12 stations at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.1 lakh crore (US$15 billion).

Package C6 from chainage 401.898 to 489.467 is the third longest package of the entire line, and connects Vadodara with Ahmedabad through one station and a minor depot at Anand-Nadiad.

NHSRCL had invited tenders (bids) for its construction, financed by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), on August 1, 2019 with a 1,370 days (3.75 years) period of completion.

Bidders:

Afcons Infrastructure Ltd. – Ircon International Ltd. – JMC Projects India Ltd. JV
Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (L&T)

Forex reserves touch lifetime high at $545 bn; bank deposit rises faster than last year, shows RBI.

India’s foreign exchange reserves surged to a lifetime high of $545.038 billion in the week ended September 18. The week saw a rise of $3.378 billion in forex reserves, according to the weekly publication of RBI. The reserves had fallen by $353 million to $541.660 billion in the previous week. A rise of $3.943 billion to $501.464 billion in foreign currency assets is mainly attributed to the rise in overall forex reserves. Foreign Currency Assets (FCA) are the most important component of the RBI’s foreign exchange reserve and include assets like US Treasury Bills bought by the RBI using foreign currencies. However, on the other hand, the gold reserves fell by $580 million in the week.

Bank deposit rises
The RBI weekly supplement also showed that the value of bank deposits in India increased 12 per cent on-year in the fortnight ended 11 September 2020, compared to 10 per cent last year. The aggregate deposits in scheduled commercial banks rose by Rs 71,417 crore to Rs 142.48 lakh crore in the fortnight. Bank deposits are on a rising streak since the lockdown began in the month of March.

Bank deposits had risen by over Rs 2.8 lakh crore in three fortnights of the lockdown till May 8, while bank credit during the period fell by Rs 1.2 lakh crore, according to the previous data released by the RBI. This has added nearly Rs 4 lakh crore to the liquidity in the banking system by then.

Bank credit surges but growth remain subdued
Meanwhile, bank credit also rose by Rs 8,700 crore in the fortnight to Rs 102.25 lakh crore. However, the growth is nearly half of that in the last year. The bank credit surged 10.4 per cent last year, compared to 5.3 per cent now. Disruptions in the businesses and mounting uncertainty due to the rising number of infections have kept the bank credit subdued even as the central bank has significantly cut the repo rate and linked it directly to retail loans.

Finally a modern train is going to be manufactured fully in India. Now even if Bombardier leaves, the ecosystem can be used to build our trainset.

Capital city of the states can induct some of these trains on the existing trainlines.

Nam, these trainsets can't be used on the IR network. The RRTS system is a standard gauge as opposed to Indian Railways broad gauge.
