These are some of DRDO books I've bought from their stalls at book fairs. They are very enthusiastic and helpful there and give out phone numbers and contact details for more queries too. But nothing works if you try to buy it from website or via phone. If you live in Delhi, you can try visiting their office. I think it's a few km from Kashmiri Gate.

ADA brochure gives for Tejas mk1

Empty weight 7040kg
Clean takeoff weight 10330kg
External Payload 3910 kg

From the above figures both empty weight and clean take of weight have gone up by 500kg and MTOW of 14240kg.

Is it true or a mistake were empty equipped weight of 7040 kg is taken as empty weight and messes up clean takeoff weight also.
It must be true. We need to account for the fact that the Tejas Mk1 FOC and Mk1A have the refueling probe plus additional piping for fuel to be transported from the probe to the fuselage and wing tanks. This may result in some weight gain, although I am not sure of the exact numbers.

Thanks for the information. That's an impressive collection! Unfortunately, I don't live in India so I will have to figure this out.

Nice pics from Kuntal Biswas! When I looked at the pictures, it took me a few minutes to realize these might be photoshopped. But again, what was photoshopped? Tail number? Fit & finish? Camouflage colour scheme? Ordnance/missiles? Tejas flying in formation? There is a squadron of these birds actually flying, carrying out sorties, may be on LoC/LAC, with missiles & bombs etc.

So, if these pics were worked on, what was embellished? :?:

Need a thread not just for Tejas but also for Sonars(Burma) ALH , BP vests, and for me to whine on why Netra on EMB145 platform wasnt commercialized.

It can be for any other fighter under upgrade, looks & feels better than Russian metal sticks and even better than IAF Mirage 2000s. As good as French Rafales, if not better.

Interesting book review

https://www.natureasia.com/en/nindia/ar ... ia.2020.33

From Temples to Turbines – An Adventure in Two Worlds V. S. Arunachalam
Arunachalam recalls how the Soviet Union was unhappy over India’s LCA plans prompting their defence minister Dmitry Ustinov to mock that India "would end up flying a kite instead of an LCA". TheFrench withdrew from the programme midway.

"Though the defence scientist’s career spanning more than two decades was dotted with challenges and successes, he nurtures a deep regret – that his project to strengthen India’s telecommunication with high bandwidth optical fibre network did not get the government’s go-ahead due to the suspicion that the network would "provide opportunities for foreign eavesdropping".

Called ‘Sankyavahani’, the project was to get technical support from CMU (where he was on sabbatical). For Arunachalam, it was a "major personal blow” when CMU eventually withdrew from the project."

In retrospect it was right decision. Who cares it's a major personal blow. A nation interests are not based on personal interests.

India has its own fiber network.
And more to come.

he was pro-Gripen for a long time and was even on Saab's payroll as a consultant during the MRCA contest. Back then he wasn't so keen on the Tejas. Good to see even critics of the Tejas now turning into supporters.

There was no love lost for LCA, when until 2016 neither IAF, nor HAL was interested with it. The writing on the wall came with GoI scraping MRCA and ordering only 36 Rafale. IAF still tried not giving up, used delaying tactics through MK1A version in return for SE RFI (which got converted in to everything except F22/F35) MMRCA 2.0

HAL realized, it has nothing on it's plate (no Rafale, no Su57), so now there is sudden pyaar on LCA.

IAF even tried to delay induction, by carrying out 4 years price negotiation! And what did they do ultimately? Reduce the PBL scope! It is no co-incidence that the contract got signed AFTER the current chief, with a history with LCA, took office. It doesn't require too much thinking to notice that getting a chief with LCA background is no co-incidence either.

It is the current chief, who has for the first time provided a categorical support to AMCA.

The others in the IAF have now got the message with the appointment of the current chief and nowhere to be seen AON for MMRCA 2.0. The jump in the badwagon, is due to the clear message in the political wind.

You can still notice the disdain in SM from some of the former IAF, towards our plans to go for MK2, AMCA & TEDBF.. and the love towards Rafale..

If we were to look at the Arjun then we will have to wait for some junior officer from 42 Armd Regt or the 43 rd Armd regt to be come the Chief to push the case for the Arjun. I am not sure that this will happen considering the doctrinal blackhole the Arjun seems to be in!!!

It would be a mistake to think it was apathy by HAL and/or IAF.
What made the two donkeys move was carrot and whip by NSA, Shri Parrikar, Smt. NS, Shri. RNS and CDS driven by Shri Modi. End result was the Chandigarh import club and its remote control in MoD got fkcued.

The lobby, though defanged, is still alive. Just like the rest of the C-system. Dormant but biding their time

Where Modi & Co need to show ruthlessness is to put the entire bunch of these people behind bars and completely dismantle the lobby. Otherwise, all it takes is a political change in 2024 to scuttle all the hard work.

This Lobby strength from Internal and International Assets, it is not soo easy. It will take atleast 2028 till this Lobby is forced out.

Good Lord .. he did make plenty of people on BRF do back flips and tear our hair out before we began to systematically challenge his arguments.

Reminds of the old saying

Victory has a thousand fathers
Defeat is an orphan

(for the Tejas programme the above needs to be written in reverse order)

Uttam is a state-of-the-art AESA radar that can track multiple targets and take hi-resolution pictures to aid in reconnaissance. Seshagiri P, project director, Uttam, said it’s being tested on two LCAs — LSP2 and LSP3 — and one executive jet. Together they’ve completed around 230 hours of flying, including 30 on LCAs.

“On the LCAs, testing is for air-to-air mode at present. The range of the radar should be almost commensurate to launch a BVR (beyond visual range) weapon; it’s specified to be so. But we’re getting a range that’s better than that. We are a couple of sorties away from starting a joint evaluation. After this, it will be ready for user evaluation,” Seshagiri told TOI.

On the executive jet, Uttam’s tested three basic modes — air-to-air, air-to-sea and air-to-ground. “...The same needs to be ported on LCA and checked for performance. There’s a fourth mode called navigation terrain avoidance, weather mode (rain bearing clouds),” Seshagiri added.
