The above article paints an incomplete picture on car ownership , almost every national highway now has tolls, some for every 25 kms. A 400 kms round trip using NHs will cost you around Rs2500 in fuel + Rs 600 in tolls = Rs 3100 today. Add another Rs 6000 to Rs 8000 for insurance every year (also regulated by IRDAI) and you get the picture. Instead of going after 93% of the population who pay no income tax (and many who do blatantly lie on their filings anyways), the government finds it easier to just increase the tax on daily consumables.

In theory, direct tax is more equitable than indirect tax, because you pay tax proportionate to the income. However, in India, given that most people don't pay direct tax, it turns out that indirect tax is more equitable. Because everybody pays those taxes.

That's why I'm quite comfortable with fuel price increase and gratified that govt isn't reducing the tax on that, because otherwise, they'd be forced to make up money from direct tax and that burden is on the small %age of the population.

This is personal to salaried class because we don't have a way to bypass the taxes neither do things like MSP etc exist.

the money has to come from somewhere. these are troublesome times.

if not the fuel tax, which is democratically shared by all, you don't want them to squeeze and burden the same 2-3% honest taxpayers by targeting them

the govt is helping the poor with many welfare schemes and is pretty liberal about it.

the fuel price hike is ok.

I disagree. Regressive taxation is a heavier burden on the middle class and the poor than progressive taxation such as income tax. You pay income tax in proportion to your income, whereas regressive taxes like excise and cess takes the same amount from everyone from a person making Rs 20,000 per month and a person making Rs 20,000,00 per month. The government must go after the 93% who pay no income tax to fund its huge expenditure, and punish those who lie on their annual filing ( it is endemic btw, even among salaried class to falsify information in tax filing). It is insincere on the government's part to increase regressive taxation to make it "equitable" because it is not equal, a person driving a Range Rover wont feel the pinch from Rs 20 increase in the price of petrol, but a person driving a small maruti will.

Four states have now taken steps to decrease the state tax to reduce some burden. Unsurprisingly the elections bound WB and Assam are two of the states followed by Rajasthan , the govt of Meghalaya facing strikes from transporters cut the VAT by half.

They are posted every month in the economy thread.

The February figure of 35.5% is officially the point where tap water connections doubled from the original 16.8% at the start of JJM on August 15 2019. In a month or so, UP will graduate to the next color tier; they’re almost 10% now. That will leave WB as the only large population state with less than 10% coverage but hopefully the WB elections will result in a verdict that helps WB modernize. Rajasthan should move into the blue tier by summer too .

The rate of progress has been consistent and it’s quite possible that almost the whole country will be in the above 75% tier by GE 2024.

Unfortunately for democracy, numbers decide elected officials. Assuming for a moment that elected officials do what the majority want : democracy will force the 20% or whatever small number of income taxed people to bear the burden.for example arhatiyas agitating against pan/adhar registration because their "farming income" is under threat

Only two ways out of the situation:

we have to decrease poverty and increase the population that pays taxes (and hence reduce the burden on the few as it exists currently)

Reduce/check the wealth concentration by demonetization like exercises and increase the tax paying population

Govt working on law to regulate social media: Ram Madhav
PTI Last Updated: Feb 21, 2021, 01:55 PM IST

Senior BJP leader Ram Madhav said that social media has become so powerful that it can even topple governments, leading to anarchy and weakening democracy, and solutions to tackle this are needed to be found within the constitutional framework.

"Social media is so powerful that it can even topple governments and regulating them is difficult as they are borderless. These forces can promote anarchy, which will weaken democracy but solutions should be within the constitutional framework," he said at the event hosted by the Prabha Khaitan Foundation on Saturday evening.
The existing laws are not adequate for this, he said. "We require new rules and laws to tackle and manage. The government is already working in this direction. he added.

while JH CM Soren says Adivasis were not Hindus, he is not asked if they were Christians ever! Why missionaries are so active in JH and how have they occupied vast amount of lands running from jungles of Palamu to Ranchi! Go to the state and you have huge churches even in small towns and villages. Soren's party allegedly takes money from them, many adivasis have been converted to Xtians and they do not want to revert back under his leadership . Interference from BD, VHP for gharwapsi has resulted in violent clashes Palghar style. JH is next Kerala in making.

Neela ji, I wish it was that simple. BIF is not going to rest merely because YAN ji has his hands clean. If they can't find anything on him, they can always get their lot (RoP/RoL) to start a riot, pin it on YAN ji, run with that story for 10-12-15 years, till some court absolves YAN ji of any wrong doing  Of course, that won't stop YAN ji from moving on to the next rung in politics  These cases may help him just as false cases over Godhra helped NaMo. We Dharmics have our work cut out.

As on today NM is more popular then BJP. YAN need to reach that level to get the majority for BJP in any post NM election. As on today he is quite popular in the party base. With a win in the next assembly elections and continuing his good work he may become NM 2.0 for BJP.

NaMo will be just 73 when the next loksabha elections are called. That's not old at all in the world of politics especially in Indian politics where a 50 yr old is portrayed as "youth leader" or a 65 yr old can be the president of the youth wing of a party (MK Stalin). Unless NaMo himself feels he is over politics there is no reason why he should not contest again in 2023.

maybe his janeu thread was of great use to him among his new electorate.

Apparently Tikait saheb is worth close to 100 crores and owns everything from auto dealerships, fuel pumps and hundreds of acres of land. Atleast his father was grassroot leader who tried to help farmers in his own disruptive way but Rakesh Tikait is a pure opportunist with eyes set on SaPa or INC ticket for the next UP elections.

In other news the INC Pondicherry govt is on a verge of collapse after multiple MLAs have resigned. There is no clarity yet for the reason behind resignations.

After the reservation agitations (gujjar, patel, jaat, lingayat ) some of which are still continuing in BJP ruled states, anti-CAA violence and siege of Delhi and now the farmers agitation one thing is clear, BJP needs to devise a way to either work around these protests and yet show its supporters that the business of governance will continue or better still come up with ways to take the wind out of these agitations even before they begin. One way to do it is to orchestrate break away factions of INC in 5 of their strongest states - MH, HR, KAR, PJ and RJ.

I believe Modiji will run the 3rd term, despite what may come but quit by the time he turns 75, anoint the new leader through parliamentary party elections (hopefully Yogi).. because he knows if any other new face from BJP (Shah, Yogi, et al) will have a harder time winning 2023 by themselves and the risk of losing the country to BIF-controlled opposition parties is simply too large.

Also, the non-sensical paradigm of "smaller states are always better" was too naive and has backfired by paving the way for rapid Abrahamization of the broken states.. whether its NE broken into smaller states resulted in christian pockets, AP broken into two with Abrahamics winning big in both and now Muslim majority North Kerala is demanding separate statehood.

Apart from YAN I don’t see any reasonably suave politician on the horizon. NM will be difficult to replace as he had the charisma, knowledge and wisdom and learn ability combined. BIF will look for one lacuna and go for it... not sure who was the actual team guiding NM... if that remains good then the transition will be fine else we are in trouble... we tend to not invest in systems only personalities and that tends to hurt in the long term although I would expect the party to have thought about it

Speaking of fundamentalists anyone know about Retd Wg Cmdr Anuma Acharya ? How does someone who has donned the uniform and served in the armed forces turn so bitter towards his/her own nation and its security ? She routinely spews poison on twitter and does not even bother to hide her naxal credentials.

This gets a mere by line in the news...while the broker 'agitation' hogged the space

West Bengal farmers may soon get benefit of PM-Kisan scheme
West Bengal farmers’ wait to get benefits under the central ‘income support scheme’, PM-Kisan, may end soon as the state, after being politically cornered on the issue in the runup to assembly polls, has finally come on board by responding to the verification exercise for beneficiaries.

Under the scheme, each landholder farmer family gets Rs 6,000 per annum. The central government transfers money directly into their bank accounts in three equal instalments of Rs 2,000.

Though West Bengal resisted joining the scheme for two years, around 55% (38 lakh) of the total 69 lakh farmers in the state have registered themselves on the PM-Kisan portal voluntarily in what could be a clear message to the Mamata Banerjee government in the wake of BJP’s promise to get them their dues if the party comes to office. Almost one lakh farmers of West Bengal registered themselves every day on the PM-Kisan portal in the past two weeks. Sensing the mood of farmers, the state government finally initiated the process of verification and forwarded the list of beneficiaries to the agriculture ministry.

a situation similar to that prevailing during the congi aided rise of bhindranwale is sought to be created once again by the BIF, khalistanis, ISI and the congis with the commies strongly supporting.

lakha sidhana has addressed a farmer's rally in bathinda and even though he has a 1 lakh reward on his head and is wanted by the dilli polis for disturbances and violence during the republic day.

gangster-turned-activist lakha sidhanaa, who has been on the run since January 26, also gave a speech at the rally and said that the agitation called by the farmers will be intensified.
