Awesome! So they must be testing the drop launched Astra. Very important for the MKI fleet since it has 4 fuselage HP's which can't use the rail launcher we had earlier. Now I'm hoping we can see this CGI by Kuntal Biswas in real life someday:Kartik wrote:Astra Mk1 BVRAAM between the intakes of a Su-30MKI

That must be the ejector pylon.

Would be interesting to find out what launcher they used. The NGARM uses an existing trapeze launcher. The MKI carries the R-27 on those hardpoints (there's a beautiful picture on BR of a fully loaded MKI with 4 x R27 and 4x R77).

That appears to be an R-77 not Astra based on mid-body fins shaping

The incident that I know of in the IAF is the (fatal) belly landing of a MiG-29 by Air Commodore CD Chandrasekhar [ http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/IAF/Database/8426 ] on 21 Jan 1997. I still remember seeing the picture of that MiG-29 covered in tarpaulins, post the accident.

12 AAMs on an MKI. What is the max that the Rafale can carry?
Another point, can the MKI theoretically carry the Kinzhal hyper- AAM?

Re: Su-30MKI: News and Discussion - August 9, 2014
Ever since I saw this tweet, I had this doubt---> "We ordered 140 jets in the year 2000... After that we ordered 40 and 42 jets in two separate contracts in 2007 and 2012... Then why is this news item mentioning order of 140 jets and not the later orders...?"Rakesh wrote: https://twitter.com/HALHQBLR/status/137 ... 44576?s=20 ---> HAL’s Nashik Division completes production from Raw Material phase (Phase IV) of 140 Sukhoi 30 MKI aircraft contract.
-
A little googling and what I found was that the orders for 40 and 42 jets that were signed in 2007 and 2012 were for knocked down kits to be bought directly from Russia and assembled at Nashik...
My guess is (I may be wrong here), Nashik assembly line is used for assembling both indigenous license produced Su30s and Su30s assembled from kits from Russia...
I also found a 2006 article which says that IAF is asking HAL to increase the capacity at Nashik line from 8 jets per year to 12 per year...
-
I have a question for some gurus here--->
Is the Su30 production/Assembly at Nashik completed or is it still going on...??? Coz. at 8 jets delivered per year from 2004 to 2007 and 12 jets per year from 2007 to 2021, the total no. of jets produced is still around 200-210 only and not 222...
Is it a case that the order for locally manufactured 140 jets got over, but some jets from the 2012 order are still pending...???
Or is it a case that HAL increased the production rate beyond 12 jets per year, so the production completed now...???
I personally believe that few jets from 2012 order are still pending coz., if all the jets were delivered, IAF would have raised the 13th squadron already...
Re: Su-30MKI: News and Discussion - August 9, 2014
Lakshman,I think that all contracted MKIs have been completed. That was made official. The extra 12 MKIs ( plus 21 MIG-29s) to be xcuired from Ru. in the report last year was clearly specified for attritions. That's perhaps why the no. of sqds. has remained at 12(?).
Nasik is waiting for the SS upgrade of over 200 MKIs ,mentioned by the media , which will keep it busy for a decade. Perhaps movement on this will happen after Putin visits India.

Re: Su-30MKI: News and Discussion - August 9, 2014
Philip ji...
Found some old article from 2013 which said that 122 jets have been produced as on February 2013... Looks like HAL met the deadline with 100 more delivered by March 2021 (12 jets*8 years =96 jets)...
There was higher production rate between 2004 to 2013 as initial phases were mere assembly of CKD kits and not full production... That was probably the reason they finished it fast...
----
Anyways, IAF already has 262 Su30s... It was planned to have 13 and half squadrons of Su30s, with each squadron having 20 jets...
Putting aside the half squadron, IAF has 12 jets with which they can raise the 13th squadron... These 10-12 jets were probably delivered only this year, hence the delay... Hope we will see it raised soon...

Philip sir, is the Kinzhal an AAM? I thought it was a hypersonic ALBM..Philip wrote:..Another point, can the MKI theoretically carry the Kinzhal hyper- AAM?
Re: Su-30MKI: News and Discussion - August 9, 2014
Kh-47M2 Kinzhal ("dagger") is a Russian nuclear-capable air-launched ballistic missile (ALBM). It has a claimed range of more than 2,000 km. It might a bit too big for an AAMManish_P wrote:Philip sir, is the Kinzhal an AAM? Re: Su-30MKI: News and Discussion - August 9, 2014
Apparently nothing is too far fetched for Russia. If they can have a near perpetual powered nuclear torpedo roaming around the world's oceans then why not a ultra long range, persistent loitering 'hype'r AAM.. Now there's a thought eh

Apols, error ,I meant ASM. Our BMos ASM has around only 300+km at the moment. Until our desi hyper-ASM arrives, It would make a huge difference when used against the PRC since we do not have a dedicated bomber either tactical or strategic at the moment. Our BMos MKIs are fine for striking targets against Pak,but against targets deep into PRC territory, maritime space, another matter.

Chances of importing those when ruskies are knee deep in dependence on cheenis is nil. Time to move on with current relation status.

IAF chief flies Su-30MKI fighter jet to witness its 'capability enhancement'
What are these "Capability Enhancements" that are ready for the Chief to test now?Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria Thursday flew a Su-30MKI fighter jet in Bengaluru to witness its "capability enhancement", the Indian Air Force (IAF) said.
"CAS (Chief of Air Staff) visited Bengaluru and interacted with test crew of Aircraft & Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) & software engineers of Software Development Institute," it said on Twitter.
Bhadauria reviewed ongoing projects during his visit on Thursday and flew a Su-30MKI aircraft to "witness the capability enhancement on successful completion of one such project", the IAF stated.

Take Russian claims with grain of salt given how the weapon its based on Iskander proved to be utter garbage in Armenia, super duper missile that is immune to all western air defenses got shot down by Barak-8 or it failed and fell apart either way not good for Russians.RajaRudra wrote:Given a chance, you will try import even the kerchiefs from vodka land(just kidding )

What is enhanced version of Su 30MKI?
- Enhanced version because it can Brahmos or cause it has got Maws and SDR, or if jingo wishes are true it has got all the goodies like Maws, SDR , Uttam Aesa , Siva pod and dozen other things. But from what Rakesh has written probably has SDR and better FBW.

Re: Su-30MKI: News and Discussion - August 9, 2014
Yes, Sir the 8 F-16 story is certainly false, but we must double on Astra orders, which should augment production capacity, it will also help induct Astra-2 and later on SFDR in numbers, the bars radar is underutilized with the Short ranged RVV-AE. I am Sure PAF are developing more tactics using the range differential between Aim-120-C and the RVV-AE, we can't have Metoer equipped Rafale's covering every combat zone.
