Re: Military Vehicles: News & Discussion
Yes, Safari Storme was previously chosen as General Service 900 class vehicle 5-6 years back. I believe the government rules allow replacement of vehicle when engine life reaches 1.5 or 1.75 Lac KM, which i believe Safari Storme would be approaching soon.
Re: Military Vehicles: News & Discussion
Tata Safari Storme weighs nearly 2 tons, and none of the the commercial "true SUV" (body-on-frame with RWD/4x4) do weigh less than 1500 kg. Would be interesting to what the vendors would offer.
Re: Military Vehicles: News & Discussion
Srin ji it's the load carrying capacity, not the weight of the vehicle itself. Even an i20 won't fit in that range.srin wrote:Tata Safari Storme weighs nearly 2 tons, and none of the the commercial "true SUV" (body-on-frame with RWD/4x4) do weigh less than 1500 kg. ^^^ Ahh .. that explains it !
Re: Military Vehicles: News & Discussion
If the Storme has performed well why go through this RFP again. Just place a repeated order. Or has there been a tech revolution in this vehicle category. Earlier in days of keep and Jonga engines were replaced no?Thakur_B wrote:Yes, Safari Storme was previously chosen as General Service 900 class vehicle 5-6 years back. Re: Military Vehicles: News & Discussion
Earlier Army had just one vehicle, Jonga or Gypsy. IA has split the requirement across many categories such as General Service vehicle, light bullet proof vehicle, light specialist vehicle, light strike vehicle and so on.
If it is a General Service vehicle then it is better to go with whatever is commercially available, because it is almost a civilian vehicle except for the Matt green paint. All these SUVs are getting better every 5 years. The days of producing thousands of Jongas or Gypsies under licence is over.

I presume. Changing a General Service vehicle lock stock does have a cost I presume?

Indian Army to acquire 800 combat vehicles for border surveillance
To bolster Reconnaissance (Recce) & Surveillance tasks, the Indian Army has initiated the process of procuring approximately 800 Light Armoured Multipurpose Vehicle (LAMV) for its mechanised infantry and armoured corps under the Buy (India-IDDM) category.
As per the Request For Information (RFI), the procurement will be done from the Indian vendors. Further, the multipurpose vehicles will be delivered within a period of 36 months from date of Award of Contract.
https://www.mod.gov.in/sites/default/files/rfi.pdf
“The LAMV will be employed by reconnaissance (Recce) and surveillance platoons of Mechanised Infantry and Recce Troops of Armoured Corps for recce and surveillance tasks. Hence, the proposed LAMV must possess adequate mobility and provide protection for troops on board,” the RFI stated.
It should be able to carry the battle loads to include weapons, ammunition, surveillance and communication equipment required to carry out mandated operational tasks, it stated.
It is noteworthy that the RFI is being issued with a view to finalise Services Qualitative Requirements (SQRs), decide procurement category and identify probable Indian vendors who are capable to undertake the said project and deliver the said LAMVs within a period of 36 months.
Decipher LAMV’s significance
It is pertinent to note that, Light Armoured Multipurpose Vehicle (LAMV) will be deployed for on road and cross country movement in the plain and desert terrain along the Western borders.
These advanced multipurpose vehicles will also be employed in the high altitude regions, up to 5,000 metres altitude, mountainous terrain including snow bound areas as occurring along Northern borders, including eastern Ladakh and North Sikkim.
On the operational requirements, the Indian Army stated that it intends to carry out silent recce and continuous surveillance of intended area of operations with protected mobility in the battle field and provide early warning and intelligence of hostile elements.
The usage will also include carriage of weapons, ammunition, surveillance and communication equipment along with recce.
On the design front, the LAMV will be modular in design, thereby offering the scope for future upgrades through simple modifications and to facilitate subsequent development, the RFI mentioned.

Tata group successfully delivers Made-in-India ‘Combat Vehicle’ to Indian Army
To bolster operational capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces, Tata group’s Aerospace and Defence Arm, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) has successfully delivered the indigenously developed Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicle-Medium (QRFV) to the Indian Army.
As per TASL, the Made-in-India combat vehicle will enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Army in future conflicts and war-like scenarios.
https://twitter.com/tataadvanced/status ... lid%3D7759
Sharing the achievement, the firm took to Twitter and said, “ TASL has successfully delivered the QRFV to the Indian Army.”
Recently, the Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt said that the Central government has taken major initiatives in the past few years and brought in reforms to encourage indigenous design, development and manufacture of defence equipment in the country, thereby expanding the production of indigenous defence equipment.
In a written reply to Rajya Sabha, the MoS said that the initiatives taken by the Centre for to encourage the production of indigenous defence equipment have resulted in cutting the the expenditure on defence procurement from foreign sources from 46 percent of the overall expenditure to 36 percent in the last four years — 2018-19 to 2021-22.
It is important to note that in April this year, Former Chief of Army Staff General MM Naravane had inducted the first set of QRFV along with Infantry Protected Mobility Vehicle (IPMV), Ultra Long Range Observation System developed by TASL and Monocoque Hull Multi-Role Mine-Protected Armoured Vehicle developed by Bharat Forge.
Indian Army’s indigenously developed specialist combat vehicles
In the first-ever development in the Indian defence ecosystem, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) became India’s first private sector company to produce and deliver wheeled armoured combat-ready vehicles for the Indian armed forces in April this year.
At a function organised at the Bombay Engineer Group (BEG), Former Indian Army Chief General MM Naravane inducted the first lot of indigenously developed Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicle Medium (QRFV), Infantry Protected Mobility Vehicle (IPMV), Ultra Long Range Observation System developed by Tata Advanced System Limited (TASL) and Monocoque Hull Multi Role Mine Protected Armoured Vehicle developed by Bharat Forge.
Infantry Protected Mobility Vehicle (IPMV) has been developed by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) along with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). In addition to supply, TASL will provide 24×7 support to maintain the vehicles at the deployment locations.
Designed and manufactured at TASL’s Pune facility, the military mobility vehicle has been built on the strategic 8×8 Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) along with the Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (VRDE), a unit of DRDO.
Notably, the vehicle has undergone stringent field trials in deserts as well as high altitude areas by the Indian Army. Further, IPMV is equipped with Made-in-India Remote Controlled Weapon Station with thermal sights and external add-on Laboratory of DRDO.
It is noteworthy that, Tata Advanced Systems’ flagship product, WhAP 8×8 (Wheeled Armoured Platform) is India’s first Amphibious Infantry Combat Vehicle (Wheeled), designed for optimised survivability, all-terrain performance, and increased lethality.
IPMV is packaged with state-of-the-art critical technologies like Integrated power pack with Automatic transmission, Floatation and propulsion. Further, modularity and scalability help the combat vehicle to be easily customised to cater to various missions and operating conditions through rigorous testing in extreme climatic conditions and terrains.

Once desi (pvt) companies start making enough defence $$, they will also start spending on lobbying for desi maal. I hope to see this happening as soon as possible. Once that happens there will be a closed loop feedback and the desi juggernaut will become unstoppable. But for that to happen, private companies have to get the defence $$.
This mahindra order is one such thing - Tata C295 deal and many others are adding up.

I wonder why we are going with desert tan colour for new vehicles. A mix of tan, olive green and brown would work across various terrains.

I hope we can use those GSH 30 6 canons from retired Mig27s and mount them on vehicles, the Chinese and Pakis will love being downrange to these.
Re: Military Vehicles: News & Discussion
Why this fascination with rotory canon or guns.
The vehicle is too small for such systems and associated ammo loads.
The vehicle is extremely interesting for me. As it gives the following options to the Indian army. As the concept picture shows a pedestal mount for light missiles.
1) Think of a quad pack launcher for Konkurs/ Amogha/ MPATGM and can be employed using the pedestal mount with vehicle under cover.
2) Or the GIAT / Nextor 20 mm gun on the remote mount.
3) extended bed version, capable of handling the DRDO short ranged missile in the Avenger configuration.
I don't know if, the vehicle can be further be developed into a 6*6 like some Supcat design's. But it offers intriguing possibilities.

But there are relatively smaller, lighter miniguns (5.56 mm calibre) and some private companies in the US have mounted them on civilian modified vehicles for many years now.
The Dillon Tactical vehicle based on a modified GM suburban SUV was one example. Videos are available on YouTube.
Useful for convoy protection, forward base defense and now against small drones
