The Netherlands had one large electronics/electrical company - Philips. They were based in Eindhoven in the south of Netherlands (the Catholic part) and originally made light bulbs. They had many subsidiaries who wer floated off as separate companies when Philips had financial problems. ASML is one of these spinoffs and beat the Japenese giants Nikon and Canon (and the US competition) in the photolithgraphic process for creating sub micron chips.sanman wrote: @18:13 - they mention that virtually all semiconductor manufacturing equipment comes from US, Japan, Netherlands. China, India Kick Out Nearly All of Each Other’s Journalists as Rivalry Escalates
Rift that opened with deadly border clash deepens as neighbors deny reporter visas
Keith Zhai, May 30, 2023
SINGAPORE—India and China have ejected each other’s journalists in recent weeks, virtually wiping out mutual media access and deepening a rift between the world’s two most populous nations.
New Delhi denied visa renewals this month to the last two remaining Chinese state media journalists in the country, from state-run Xinhua News Agency and China Central Television, according to people familiar with the matter.
Indian media outlets had four remaining journalists based in China at the beginning of the year. At least two of them haven’t been granted visas to return to the country, a Chinese official said. A third was told this month that his accreditation had been revoked but he remains in the country, people familiar with the matter said.
The reciprocal moves are likely to add to acrimony between the two neighbors, whose relationship has deteriorated since a deadly brawl on the contested Sino-Indian border in June 2020. Since then, a once-warming relationship between the two members of the so-called Brics grouping of emerging powers has grown testy, spilling over into a wide-ranging bilateral dispute.
India has shifted toward more active participation in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, the U.S.-led grouping known as the Quad that also includes Australia and Japan, and which China regards as an attempt to encircle and contain it.
Ties between New Delhi and Beijing have soured in other ways. India has banned dozens of Chinese mobile apps, including TikTok, WeChat and other global hits with roots in China, effectively locking them out of the fast-growing Indian market.
In recent months, China has renamed certain features in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, which Beijing claims almost in its entirety and calls South Tibet.
China boycotted a Group of 20 working group meeting on tourism after India, as host, decided to hold the meeting this month in the territory of Kashmir. The region has been at the center of a dispute between India and Pakistan since partition in 1947, with both countries claiming it in full but only controlling parts of it. China’s territorial disputes with India include the abutting strategic area of Ladakh.
The journalist ejections add another dimension to the fraying ties between China and India, reducing exchanges and visibility between two nuclear-armed neighbors whose combined population accounts for more than one-third of the world’s total.

China has journalists. Okee dokee.

But, China has kicked out a number of journalists from various countries too. Its paranoia and the urge for 'immediate punishment' are phenomenal.g.sarkar wrote:https://archive.is/xGYq8

The Chinese allege the following (per their Foreign Ministry):"Chinese journalists in India have no difficulties in reporting. However, Indian journalists in China have been operating with difficulties – such as not being permitted to hire locals as correspondents or journalists. Foreign media in India can freely hire local journalists to work for their bureaus. Indian journalists in China also face restrictions while getting access and travelling locally within China," said Bagchi.
India hopes that Chinese authorities facilitate the continued presence of Indian journalists in working and reporting from China. The two sides remain in touch regarding this issue.
Now, why did that 2017 thing happen? It is because of this:"Chinese journalists have suffered unfair and discriminatory treatment in India for long. In 2017, India had reduced the validity of visas for our journalists to three months and sometimes just one month and since 2020 India hasn’t approved Chinese journalists applications for being stationed in India. At present there is just one Chinese journalist in India, down from 14 in the past. As a result China has taken counter measures," said China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning recently.
China says that it would like to maintain communication with India under the principles of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.
On July 23, 2016, India denied further extension of visas to three Chinese journalists (who were already on fortnightly extensions awaiting their replacements after expiry of their visas four months ago) based on reports from Karnataka intelligence agencies. The three Xinhua news-agency staffers impersonated other people and visited restricted facilities (in Bylakuppe) under assumed names. Apparently, the three had visited areas around Bengaluru and met Tibetan activists. They had also visited Nepal frequently even as the India-Nepal relationship deteriorated under a China-sponsored Nepalese Prime Minister, K.P. Sharma Oli of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) and anti-India sentiments were high there in an unrest over the new Constitution. An Indian Government source said, “The three journalists had overstayed their visa and subsequently they had received several visa extensions. So we asked them to return as it is no longer possible to give them visa extensions” The fact that the three journalists resorted to this tactics while they were under extended visas, and therefore no great fallout if caught, shows a sinister plan.
The context is also significant. By c. 2016/2017, the India-China relationship had seriously strained (which Modi tried to restore through the Xi'an meet in 2018 and later Mahabalipuram meet in 2019). This was because of China putting a technical hold in the UNSC over the Indian request to include JeM chief Masood Azhar under the sanctions list, its virulent stand against India being admitted into NSG because it would be against the ‘interests of China’ and it would ‘upset Pakistan’, China reacting adversely to a Tibetan conference in Dharmasala where Uyghur political leaders were given visa to attend, China commenting about the situation in Kashmir, intruding into eastern Uttarakhand in June 2016, and reports of joint patrol by the Chinese and Pakistani armies in POK which China for the first time referred to as ‘Pakistan border’.
Now, since China can never be wrong and always be right, it demands the following:
Everyone must work in concert with China because it is the Middle Kingdom ordained by Heaven to civilize the barbarians. It is always others who have to 'restore the situation and create conducive environment', not China"We hope that India will work in the same direction with China and respond to our legitimate concerns and create conditions for restoring normal exchange between media organizations of both countries,"

Was Vivek Raghuvanshi, who was arrested as Chinese spy, engaging in writings against Modi or the govt? It doesn't seem like someone engaged in spying would want to attract attention to themselves by writing against the PM or the govt.
Re: Challenge of China_ Political, Economic & Military Responses
A wonderful analysis of the PRC position of what India is to them and the threat perceptions of the regime.
There seems to be a lot of cognitive dissonance going around in PRC.

I didn't know the China angle for if that is true it makes sense that RaGa would be defending him as after all he signed the 'secret' Beijing Accord in 2008>

Re: Challenge of China_ Political, Economic & Military Responses
Suspect they are shrinkage cracks. Caused by miscalculation.
we need to remember that China has at best copied stuff, not designed it based on first principles. The chances for failure, fro such an asset (AC!!!) have to be extremely high.

This is a conversation with Lt.Gen S L Narasimhan.
It's another wonderful conversation with a subject matter expert on China.
Explains the way the PRC thinks about it self and it's relative lack of comprehensive understanding about Indian.
A fascinating insight from an Indian point of view.

This paper was discussed a year ago. I read the entire paper and extracted key numbers (which the author did not explicitly show) from the data:ramana wrote:ramana wrote:I am convinced China's economy is all Shanghai Statistics. Will work to prove it.

Specifically, according to the paper:
China's actual GDP grew by 3.3X over the 1992-2013 period, but has been grossly falsified to a much higher reported growth of 7X.
India's actual GDP grew by 3X in the same period and its reported GDP growth was just a little higher at 3.3X.

Thanks. Very good data on Shanghai statistics.

Economists are slowly realizing that for two decades, China growth was overstated, and its real economy is half what is stated.
Many Western banks are tied into loans to the inflated market and are afraid to call "the Emperor has no clothes" for they will get a shave and not just a haircut.

Forge a 'great wall of steel', Xi tells China's border troops

President Xi Jinping has called on China's border troops to forge a "great wall of steel" along the country's frontiers by enhancing their capabilities in border defence and control, the state media reported Friday.
Xi, 69, who heads the ruling Communist Party of China and the country's Central Military Commission, the high command of the People's Liberation Army, made a fact-finding trip on Wednesday to survey the work of border management and control and the development of frontier troops in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
The Chinese president asked troops to break new ground in border defence, state-run Xinhua news agency reported on Friday.

In 2021, he made a rare visit to Nyingchi, a strategically located border town close to Arunachal Pradesh, during his first visit to Tibet.
