Last few seconds DD switched to some close up shot and we could not see real time Hv, Vv and Alt data. Hope DD does a better job when we see the next landings on Mars and Venus.

Jai Hind.

Now to get to the serious Science stuff and stake our territorial rights on the moon.

Hoping in the same breath that we will also stake our territorial rights on the chanda to our west soon

Horizontal was quite low 0.002 m/s or something, vertical was a bit more I think, even then 3 m/s is around 7 mph not even a fender bender!

^^^ The velocity value kept changing up and down, and the camera was not pointed at the screen, so we dont know for the exact moment.

However, the important thing is that hover was achieved several 100 meters above the lunar surface, which means that the craft was under full control and behaving normally. So I am pretty sure the landing speed was within parameters per mission.

3 m/s is the upper limit of the design and becomes borderline. Mission parameters would have called for a much lower value as optimal landing velocity.

Congratulations!!!!
India broke the sixth country syndrome.
First country to land near South Pole of the moon.

President Kalam wrote he wanted to break the 'sixth' country syndrome. Every achievement has the blurb. "India is the sixth country to do this, blah, blah..."

Agree Ramana ji, India should also get out the "shoe string budget" mindset to forever bury the sixth country syndrome. Big achievements need and deserve big budgets.

What was the horizontal landing velocity of the lander?
I saw it sustaining at around 1m/s for the last part of the descent.

Awesome !

Waiting for the Next Sequential Steps in Progress, such as Pargyaan sliding down, roving, doing the tests and Vikram doing its own.

It would also be great if the two can survive the Lunar night and come back roaring after that.

The whole launch all the way to the landing has been extremely precise as shown by the PM being left with a lot of fuel and the copybook soft landing.

The last visuals from ISRO official @59.27 minute mark reads this - (all within tolerance limit) -

Height/Altitude left to be covered - 19 Meters, Vertical velocity = 1.584 m/s and horizontal velocity = .225 m/s

After that it simply landed.

mission parameter's upper limit on landing speed was 3 m/s meaning it would survive.
Optimal value for landing speed would be much lower....not published.

What was the horizontal landing velocity of the lander?
ISRO chief mentioned landing speed was far less than 2 m/s

Congrats to ISRO, BRF, SSSalvi, Amber G., and others I don't remember. And, most importantly, Dilbuji just for showing up in the nick of time :)

Now, is there a thread that has all the rona dhona from the usual suspects (liberals, p@kis, Bri$hits, western media etc)? Wish to enjoy that with a topping of schadenfreude 8)

2 m/s or lower was deemed very safe for CY3.

For CY2, this value was equal to or lesser than 1 m/s, as far as I can recall.

Very true Dilbu ji.

Visuals were often very different from the commentary. Also, the touch down data was missed out

Jai Hind! Bharat Mata ki Jai! Congratulations ISRO! Congratulations to the Nation!

I think the live video feed will be uploaded through the Deep Space network and will be made available soon. I don't recall if it was going to be a live video feed of the landing but there were time-lapsed pictures being beamed back where you could see the smooth landing zone just below the lander as it descended and went into hover mode.

The real work for the ISRO engineers is just beginning. They are checking parameters on the rover to see if it survived the landing well and powering up its systems and checking system parameters. Rover will be working for the 14 days and nights and preparations for that are probably underway. If PRagyaan goes through this entire timeframe without a hitch, then a ton of pictures and scientific data will come our way.

BIggest thing they are probably looking at pictures in front of the lander Vikram and whether it has clear space to roll out a ramp so PRagyaan can come out smoothly. (My speculation: if this is not possible and there is boulder in front of Vikram, the 'hop' of the lander that people were speculating about might come sooner, but this is pure speculation).
