The situation in Maharashtra is likely to worsen due to the Maratha agitation. This is an IED that has been laid cleverly by pawarful people and will require deft handling by Fadnavis and Shinde. The agitation is led by Jarange who by his own machinations and assurances has left himself with no space to compromise with, so for him it’s all or nothing. The government on the other hand is in a bind: it cannot increase the reservation quota beyond 50% as it will be struck down by SC and if it gives the quota out of existing 50%, the other OBCs will turn on BJP.

Pawarful has encouraged this repeatedly without doing anything about it himself when he was in office. This has the potential to turn into a serious law and order situation… not to mention the impact on 2024 elections.

Local BJP politicians (corporator levels) have been sending out whatsapp campaigns for mass enrollment for Kunbi certificates for the Marathas which will give them reservation eligibility under the OBC quota. Either ways I dont think its going to end up well for the BJP, as pawarful senior has carefully setup landmines. I think they will pay electoral price for this.

Putting ordinary people on pedestal of Gods has become a weakness of Hindus. Well, the Panchyat elections in MH show the NDA (including NCP-Ajit and SS-Shinde) doing 3x as well as the MVA. They've swept all but 1 seats in Baramati as well.
If they're doing this well in rural MH, they will sweep urban MH as well next year.

And don't forget - any Maratha campaigns are going to lead to counter-mobilisation by OBCs and other castes.. who are staunch NDA supporters anyway.

The way I see it - DF and team are OK to sacrifice a few seats in Marathwada due to this agitation, and will go hammer and tongs in the rest of the state. 40+ in the LS is not impossible, looking at today's results.

I think all parties fought separately. The electorate sizes were small - around 400-500 voters per Panchayat, so they just tallied up post the voting.
The reservation game is straight out of the Congress playbook, Kakashri is an old hand at this. Jarange-Patil used to be a member of the Congress, left it back in '04-'05 after the James Laine controversy.

I honestly think the Yuti should continue doing what they are doing right now - pointing out that Kaka had 2.5 years as part of the MVA to structure a reservation scheme that would pass muster with the SC, but didn't do it - in fact, he told Marathas that they should forget about reservation entirely.

I am unaware of the intricacies of the cut-offs, but I am sure that there will be counter-polarisation among the OBCs - see what Bhujbal is saying.
