INS Arihant: News & Discussion
Re: INS Arihant: News & Discussion
Hope & pray it was a K4. Was there a NOTAM/NAVAREA?
Re: INS Arihant: News & Discussion
There was a report of a NOTAM for an experimental missile scheduled a couple of weeks ago.ArjunPandit wrote:was it K4 or K5?

People asked if it had happened.
Most likely the experimental missile part is on the regular missile flown.
So I would think it's a K4.

Looks like K4, not K15.

The actual footage/images of the Arihant launch will not come out so quickly.

^ Waiting for it. So, they had a mix of K-15s & K-4s in their tubes when they left Vizag.

Can it not fly Ballistic?
Or both Ballistic and hypersonic glide (on re entry)?

India's submarine fleet to get booster dose early next year
On the SSBN (nuclear-propelled submarines armed with nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles) front, the 6,000-tonne INS Arighat is also slated to be commissioned within the next few months.
When she joins INS Arihant, she will add some teeth to India's strategic deterrence posture by strengthening the country's weakest leg of the nuclear triad. Under the Rs 90,000 crore advanced technology vessel (ATV) project, two more 7,000-tonne SSBNs (currently called S-4 and S-4*) are under construction, with one of them being "launched into water" last year.
As of now, India however has just one operational SSBN in INS Arihant, armed only with short-range 750-km B-O5 or K-15 missiles.

^ I am disappointed that the Arihant diving/helmsman station is looking all TFTA as in a western submarine and not at all SDRE with very long dark narrow corridors.
---
I do not think people on twitter understand the importance & implication of that single photo above (of the helmsman station).
This is the first photo of an helmsman station of any boomer (SSBN) in Asia and outside of the select few countries (US/UK/Fr/Russia).
And that helmsman station really looks TFTA.

Google Earth shows two boats at Vizag. Presumably one of them - the partially covered and likely longer - is Aridhaman while either of Arihant and Arighat are out on patrol.

weapons and buildIndia's second nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) will be commissioned in the next few months, Janes understands.
The vessel, which will be in service as INS Arighat once commissioned by end 2024, is going to be formally inducted almost seven years after it was launched.
According to Janes data, Arighat was launched in Visakhapatnam in November 2017. It has a length of 111.6 m, beam of 11 m, draught of 9.5 m, and a displacement of 6,000 tonnes.
Arighat is one of three SSBNs that have been launched by India. First-of-class INS Arihant was launched in July 2009 and commissioned in August 2016, while a third yet-to-be-named vessel was launched in November 2021.
Four large vertical launch system (VLS) tubes in the submarine carry these Sagarika SLBMs. Sagarika is a hybrid propulsion, two‐stage, solid‐propellant missile. The first stage lifts the missile to an altitude of about 4 km. The missile has a range of more than 700 km.
Arighat is built with Russian steel equivalent to US HY-80 grade. The submarine is divided into seven compartments, with main divisions for the propulsion and combat management systems, platform management centre, and the torpedo room.
Arighat also features a double hull, encompassing ballast tanks, two standby auxiliary engines, and a retractable thruster for emergency power and mobility.

Arighat is the first-of-class INS Arihant which was launched in July 2009. It was commissioned in August 2016. The third one was launched in November 2021 but has not been named yet.
Built at Visakhapatnam-based Ship Building Centre (SBC), the Arighat has a length of 111.6 m, beam of 11 m, draught of 9.5 m, and a displacement of 6,000 tonnes. The submarine will have a top speed of 24 kt, and a surfaced speed of 10 kt.
Like INS Arihant, the Arighat is also having four launch tubes in its hump and can carry up to four nuclear-capable K-4 Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles (SLBMs) with a range of 3,500 kilometers. It can also be equipped with 12 K-15 SLBMs, which can be carried up to 750Kms.

Re: INS Arihant: News & Discussion
In big step towards nuke triad, India set to commission 2nd nuclear-sub today - Rajat Pandit - ToI
India will commission its second nuclear-powered submarine with nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles as INS Arighat on Thursday, in a major step towards further strengthening its strategic deterrence capabilities.
The commissioning of the almost 112-metre-long submarine, armed with K-15 missiles that have a strike range of 750-km, will take place at the secretive ship-building centre in Visakhapatnam in the presence of defence minister Rajnath Singh and top national security and military officials.
TOI was the first to report on Aug 11 that INS Arighat's commissioning was now imminent after the 6,000-tonne boat became "fully ready" following protracted extensive trials and technological upgrades.
"While INS Arighat is of the same size, length and displacement as INS Arihant, she can carry more K-15 missiles. The new boat is much more capable, efficient and stealthy," a source said.
The real punch in India's deterrence capabilities will come when the third SSBN (naval parlance for nuclear-propelled submarines with nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles), a slightly larger 7,000-tonne vessel, is commissioned next year. To be called INS Aridhaman, she will carry K-4 missiles that can hit targets 3,500-km away.
A fourth SSBN is also being constructed under the classified Rs 90,000 crore advanced technology vessel (ATV) project to bolster the country's weak sea-based leg of the nuclear triad.
