The spectacular resignation of Thierry Breton from the European Commission suggests that the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen is not quite as useless as her numerous critics suggest. Breton’s departure was overdue. Credit to von der Leyen for wielding the long knife.

Breton’s arrogance was exceeded only by his uselessness. After Mario Draghi’s taxonomy of European decline last week, the role of Breton as commissioner in charge of the single market was a nonsense. Draghi said Europe is on a path to self-destruction, becoming nothing more than an open-air museum, sustained by tourism.

‘For the first time since the Cold War, we must genuinely fear for our self-preservation, and the reason for a unified response has never been so compelling’, explained Draghi.

The numbers speak for themselves. In 2008, the Eurozone and the US had comparable gross domestic products (GDP) of $14.2 trillion (£10.7 trillion) and $14.8 trillion (£11.2 trillion) in current prices. In 2023, the eurozone’s GDP had edged up to just over $15 trillion (£11.8 trillion), while America’s stood at $27.4 trillion (£20.4 trillion). America has innovated, the EU has regulated. And while China and America plough ahead, Europe is sclerotic.

Breton has personally done more than anyone to inhibit technological progress in the European Union. He is responsible for the EU Artificial Intelligence Act which has made it impossible to build an AI startup in Europe. He is responsible for the Digital Services Act which has been used to stifle free speech in Europe.

Breton has been roundly praised by the usual soup servers for his magnificent contribution to Europe on behalf of France and was even mentioned as a candidate for a big ministerial job in the centrist technocratic government being put together by Michel Barnier. I suspect this is unlikely.

Breton has been replaced by Stéphane Séjourné, former foreign minister, former boyfriend of former prime minister Gabriel Attal. What he will bring to the job we don’t yet know.

The composition of the new European Commission, following the June elections, is underway. In July, it seemed certain that Breton would be re-nominated and that France was seeking to increase its influence through him—if possible by getting him a post as vice resident. But according to the commissioner, von der Leyen, who was recently re-elected for another five-year term, “asked France to withdraw his name” for personal reasons that the commission president did not bother to explain to the main person concerned.

Breton’s non-renewal was apparently requested by von der Leyen in return for France actually obtaining this famous ‘super portfolio,’ but no information has been released on this subject, and neither the French presidency nor von der Leyen’s office could be contacted for comment.

This is the latest episode in what Breton describes as “dubious governance,” and which he has been keen to denounce for several months.


The episode speaks volumes about the state of France and the European Union: when an autocrat gets rid of a political commissar—in the Soviet sense of the term—in favour of a servile servant of power, democracy can wait.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s governing Social Democrats barely squeaked by in its stronghold of Brandenburg this weekend, highlighting the increasing influence of the national populist Alternative for Germany on the right and the upstart populist Sahra Wagenknecht Union (BSW) on the left.

The closely watched state election on September 22 saw Scholz’s SPD win 30.9% to edge past AfD at 29.2%. As in the September 1 state elections in Saxony and Thuringia, BSW finished in double digits, in this case in third place with 13.5%, more than the Christian Democrats (CDU) at 12.1%.

These four parties — SPD, AfD, BSW, CDU — alone won seats in the legislature. Two of these four parties oppose German military aid for Ukraine. The SPD, BSW and AfD outperformed their results in the last elections (2019), while the CDU fell short, and Greens and the Left (Die Linke) suffered major collapse compared to the previous elections.

The state of Brandenburg, surrounding but not including the capital Berlin, has a much higher profile nationally than Saxony and Thuringia, where elections on September 8 showed striking gains by AfD and BSW, which are both opposed to German military support for Ukraine. In the lead up to the Brandenburg election, the German press has speculated that Scholz might have been forced out by SPD leadership if the party failed to win the Brandenburg election.

This could be interpreted as a gesture to help Woidke defend SPD’s leadership in Brandenburg against the two antiwar parties, AfD and BSW. The BSW has made opposition to further military support for Ukraine and opposition to proposed US missile deployments in Germany a condition for their participation in governing coalitions.

A large group of Israeli fans attending the Europa League matches in Amsterdam faced violent attacks from thousands of Palestinians and Muslims in the city.

Many Israelis suffered injuries from beatings, stabbings, and being run over.

The local police seem unable to manage the chaos, and there hasn't been any response or guidance from Israeli officials for the thousands of Israelis present.
