Boycott Turkey Trends in India After Drone Attack Plot Uncovered
Turkey Betrays India? Just days after India helped Turkey during a devastating earthquake, Turkish drones are now being used by Pakistan to target Indian soil. 300–400 Turkish-made drones violated Indian airspace, hitting 36 targets—civilian and military. A Turkish warship docked in Karachi, and arms-laden aircraft landed right after the Pahalgam terror attack. As Erdogan openly backs Pakistan on Kashmir, #BoycottTurkey is now trending across India. Is Turkey fueling terror in South Asia to fulfill its pan-Islamist ambitions? And what will this mean for India-Turkey trade ties? Watch this explosive story that exposes Erdogan’s dangerous game against New Delhi

"Turkey's annual inflation rate was 38.1% in March 2025, and it was 37.9% in April 2025. "
The interest rate hovers at around 45%.
The lira has depreciated with respect to the US dollar over 500% in the last five years.

Not sure what the underlying issue is. Foreign debt is about 45% of GDP, current account deficit is about 3.5% of GDP. Government debt is 26% of GDP, private debt is 148% of GDP.

Ah, madrassa mathematics strikes Turkey too.
This from 2022.

Moreover, GDP calculations were significantly revised upward in both 2008 and 2016 and the new series are not considered reliable. Therefore, the ratio of the hard currency-denominated liabilities of the central government, central bank, and non-financial real sector to GDP figures may be underestimated. This means that when it comes to external borrowing, the Turkish economy is classified as only slightly better off than Sri Lanka and Lebanon, falling into the same group as Egypt and Pakistan.
Also:
In March 2018 some of Turkey’s main business conglomerates were no longer able to pay back their hard currency debts and chose to apply for restructuring. This triggered an avalanche and the depreciation of the TL became inevitable. The government realized that this shock was stronger than the prior ones and would not be easy to overcome, and therefore snap elections were called. Erdoğan’s credibility was strong enough to deny the approaching full-fledged currency crisis and assert himself as a savior. The June 2018 elections were a big victory for Erdoğan, his party, and its far-right ally, the Nationalist Action Party (Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi, MHP). Nonetheless, Turkey was diving deeper and deeper into economic crisis and the government was still underestimating its destructive potential.

NDTV is reporting that the GOI has directed Indigo Airlines to terminate its wet lease of 2 aircraft (flying Delhi-Istanbul and Mumbai-Istanbul) with Turkish Airlines. They have been given a 'final grace period' of two months, so that the pasengers with already booked tickets don't get inconvenienced.

Good Move!

IMHO the GOI should issue an official advisory for Indian citizens not to travel to Turkey or Azerbaizan citing the hostility of their Governments towards India.

INDIA TURKEY TENSIONS
From Mediterranean To Caucasus: Why Indian Navy Is Sending Warships Near Turkey; How These Countries Are Helping New Delhi
Following Turkey’s historical support to Pakistan, including arms supply and military training, India strengthens its naval presence and deepens ties with Turkey’s neighbours.
Tarique Anwar, Oct 06, 2025

Ankara/New Delhi: India is asserting itself decisively in the Eastern Mediterranean and South Caucasus, signalling a strategic counter to Turkey’s regional influence. The moves follow Operation Sindoor, when Ankara dispatched a warship to Karachi in support of Pakistan. Since then, Indian naval vessels have maintained a near-constant presence in waters close to Turkey, demonstrating an unprecedented maritime strategy.
India’s naval presence goes beyond patrolling. New Delhi is also forging alliances against Ankara. The Indian Navy has strengthened ties with Turkey’s neighbours (Greece, Cyprus, and Armenia) all of which have long-standing disputes with Ankara. Coordinated drills and joint exercises convey a clear strategic message: Turkey’s influence is being countered with precision planning.
Turkey’s Past Moves
Turkey has historically supported Pakistan militarily, including during the 1971 India-Pakistan war. Turkish troops have trained Pakistani forces, and Bayraktar TB-2 drones supplied by Ankara were deployed against India.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s repeated mentions of Kashmir at the United Nations further strained relations.
India’s strategic alignment with Turkey’s regional adversaries mirrors these actions, signalling a calibrated response.
Armenia: A Strategic Partner In The Caucasus
Located between Azerbaijan and Turkey, Armenia has relied on India for advanced military systems since 2022. New Delhi has supplied it Akash-1S air defense systems, Pinaka multiple launch rocket systems, artillery, anti-tank rockets and anti-drone technology.
This strengthens Armenia’s defense against Turkey-backed Azerbaijan and creates the potential for Indian and Turkish assets to face each other in any future conflict in the region.
Greece: Maritime Coordination And Strategic Depth
Greece has become a key partner in India’s Mediterranean strategy. The two nations share mutual concerns over Turkey’s maritime and airspace claims. Following public support for India after the Pahalgam attacks, Greece requested operational guidance on Rafale fighter jets and combat data sharing.
In August 2025, Indian frigate INS TAMAL participated in PASSEX exercises with the Greek Navy. The following month, INS Trikand conducted the first bilateral naval drill with the Hellenic Navy. Exercises included anti-submarine warfare, night boarding drills and coordinated gunnery operations.

Indian Navy Deploys Warships Near Turkey: Mediterranean To Caucasus Allies Back New Delhi
Monday, October 06, 2025 by Indian Defence News

India’s enhanced naval activity in the Eastern Mediterranean and South Caucasus marks a major strategic shift aimed at countering Turkey’s regional influence. The move is directly linked to tensions following Operation Sindoor, when Ankara sent a warship to Karachi in support of Pakistan.
Since then, Indian warships have maintained a consistent presence near Turkish waters, signalling a deliberate maritime posture that blends deterrence with alliance-building.
Turkey’s historical support for Pakistan provides the backdrop for these developments. Ankara has supplied arms, trained Pakistani troops, and provided Bayraktar TB-2 drones, which were used in hostile operations against India.
Turkish dictator Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's repeated public statements on Kashmir, including at the United Nations, further deepened the diplomatic rift. India’s pivot to strengthening ties with Turkey’s rivals represents a calculated response to these provocations.
In the Caucasus, Armenia has emerged as a frontline strategic partner for India. Since 2022, New Delhi has supplied Yerevan with Akash-1S air defence systems, Pinaka rocket artillery, anti-tank munitions, and advanced anti-drone technologies.
This partnership not only bolsters Armenia’s military against Turkey-backed Azerbaijan but also creates the possibility of Indian and Turkish military assets facing each other in any future regional flashpoint.
Greece stands out in India’s Mediterranean strategy, sharing common opposition to Turkey’s expansive maritime and airspace claims. In the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attacks, Greece expressed public solidarity with India and sought operational guidance on Rafale fighter jets, alongside combat data-sharing arrangements.
Indian naval units have deepened maritime interoperability with the Hellenic Navy, as seen with August 2025 PASSEX drills by INS Tamal and September’s bilateral exercise involving INS Trikand, focused on anti-submarine warfare, night boarding operations, and coordinated gunnery. Reports suggest India is considering supplying Greece with long-range land-attack cruise missiles (range 1,000–1,500 km), potentially shifting the strategic equation in the Aegean.

Indian Warships Flex Muscles In Turkey’s Backyard; India’s Alliance With Greece-Cyprus-Armenia ‘Rattles’ Ankara?
Sakshi Tiwari, October 4, 2025

Disgruntled by Turkey’s backing for Pakistan during ‘Operation Sindoor,’ India is further strengthening its military ties with three of Ankara’s major rivals: Greece, Cyprus, and Armenia.
When India launched ‘Operation Sindoor’ against Pakistan in May 2025 to avenge the Pahalgam terror attack, Turkey publicly chose Pakistan’s side, calling India’s actions “provocative.”
Additionally, it provided support to Pakistan in the military domain, as evidenced by the firing of 350 Turkish drones at Indian cities during the conflict.
During its retaliatory strikes on India, Islamabad reportedly deployed Turkish-origin Bayraktar TB2 and YIHA drones for conducting surveillance, marking targets, and executing kamikaze-style attacks on targets along the borders. The Asisguard Songar drones were used to attack targets inside India.
Turkey’s unprecedented diplomatic, military, and media propaganda support to Islamabad after the ghastly terror attacks in Kashmir outraged Indians.
India initially responded by blocking the X accounts of some Turkish media publications peddling ‘fake news’ and revoking the security clearance for Celebi Airport Services, as reported by the EurAsian Times at the time.
Furthermore, hundreds of top trade leaders from India announced a total boycott of all travel, business, and cultural interactions with Turkey, resulting in a significant decline in Indian tourists visiting Turkey.
In the past, Turkey has provided military aid to Pakistan, including during the 1971 Indo-Pak War, and hosted Pakistani military training.
More importantly, though, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly internationalized Kashmir at the UN General Assembly (UNGA), calling it a “threat to peace” in speeches since 2019. India views this as interference in its internal affairs and has condemned Ankara for towing that line.
