Another question- the detection range of 31miles does not seem too hot...the old Jay Bird had a tracking range of close to 20 miles against fighter sized targets....

Perhaps, but you can't expect a small fighter like the mig21 suddenly turn into an Su30. It's probable not possible to fit an bigger radar into the aircraft.<BR>Just my thoughts.<p>[This message has been edited by Skanhai (edited 08-09-1999).]

Skanhai,<P>Maybe....could someone else also give gyan on this....<P>The other funda here is if the radar has a tracking range of just 30 miles...thats a big underutilisation of the R-77, which has a range of some 60+ miles. But anyway, this would still be a big increase in capability for the 21s.

rsingh,<P>15kms is at the outer edge of the range of the AIM-9P...but with the TSP F-16s, we may also need to worry about AIM-7Fs, with a range of some 45 kms...

Drones aren't that easy to lock onto mainly because of RCS. I want to remind people that the last time an IAF brought down something that size (a Pak UAV)the MiG-21s used gunfire. By the same token, when SWAC brought down a UAV earlier using a SA-3 they relied on the very very powerful P-16s to permit missile engagement.
