My all time favourite
Aye watan aye watan, humko teree kasam,
Teree rahon mein jaan tak loota jayenge.
Phool kya cheez hai, kadmon mein tere
Bheinth apne saron kee charra jayenge.
Aye watan aye watan.
I think this one is also from the old Bhagat Singh starring Manoj kumar.

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika has concieved many patriotic songs that are legendary in Assam. Most of you might not be able to understand his songs coz they are either in Assamese or Bengali; suffice to say that his lyrics coupled with his ethereal baritone gives goosebumps to anyone who understands them. As soon as I find good translations of them in english and hindi I will post them.

Ganga is actually a translation of a very old song by Dr Bhupen Hazarika. In the original version the river was Burha Luit (Old Brahmaputra) and it remains one of the anthems of Assam. Later he rewrote the song by addressing the Ganges, first to Bengali and then to Hindi (pure hindi, not the pop hindi that we hear in bollywood songs).
The song is an expression of anger and dissatisfaction at the ills plaguing our society. Its message is to urge us not to add to these troubles but instead, work for a better tomorrow. He goes on to say that we have to work NOW.
Though he composed and performed all renditions of the original song, the version on the commercial album "The Complete Bhupen Hazarika" is performed by various other artists. The above album is hardly representative of his work. The complete Bhupen Hazarika can only be understood in his full albums and his truly genuine road shows.

Isn't this a poem composed by an independence era poet by the name of Bismil?
BTW - the movie Ananda Math with its rendition of Vande Mataram, has a very `Alexander Nevesky'ish feel to it. It is without doubt one of the best renditions of the piece I have heard.

Yep.. that is Ramprasad Bismil.

You know what guys, I just realized there isn't really a well documented easily accessible database of Indian patriotic poetry and songs. It would be really cool to create a database that puts following
1) Poetry,
2) Poet,
3) Song,
4) Singer/s,
5) Music Composer,
6) Movie, and
7) Historical context
into one place.

There is movie called Goa something..I do not recall the full name or the song...it is picturised on I S Johar and someone else. Listening to it does not make one feel that it is strictly a patriotic song but, the context/background leaves one under no doubt that it is a patriotic song. It is about liberation of Goa, IIRC...song goes like this..

Re: Indian Patriotic Songs
In connection with the patriotism angle, don't forget the enormous positive contribution of Hindi cinema ('Bollywood', if you prefer) to the goodwill shown towards India in various foreign countries. Names like Raj Kapoor were well known and widely revered in Russia, Uzbekstan, Tajikstan, Afghanistan etc. (actually in Pakistan too, but those liars will deny it).
Sandeep Bajwa, Jumrao etc, do you guys know of a website/database that I can search to find the links between old Bollywood songs (I'm talking from the Forties, Fifties, Sixties) and the films in which they appeared? For example, "Monsoon Wedding" includes an old song ("Gori, gori, Banki chori, kabhi meri galli aaya karo") originally from an old Hindi movie. What was the movie?

Not to forget the song in which Dilip Kumar stars...
<I>"Sar kataa sakte hain lekin sar jhukaa sakte nahin"</I>
The 'rapid-fire' version of Vande Mataram is my all time fav...AFAIK this was already the way how kids used to sing it in school before they slowly converted to the new tune.

Title song from Prem Pujari by S.D. Burman:
Prem ke pujari hum hain
ras ke bhikhari hum hain
prem ke pujari, prem ke pujari
Kahaan ye himaalaa aisa, kahaan aisaa paani
yehi woh zameen jiski duniyaa diwani...
Aditya,
Apni Azadi ko hum hargiz mitaa sakte nahin

Re: Indian Patriotic Songs
Following is not typically a patriotic song but does find emotions like these quite common in India..though the song is very much for social harmony in India but the msg does go beyond that too.. It is from the movie Dhool Ka Phool, stg. Rajinder Kumar but this song was picturised on Manmohan Kishan and an infant...sung by Mohd Rafi..
Tu hindu banega na muslmaan banega
insaan kee aulad hai insaan banega
Tu hindu banega na muslmaan banega
insaan kee aulad hai insaan banega
Re: Indian Patriotic Songs
In Marathi, there are number of poems by Veer Savarkar that were put to tune by several major artists. These poems constitute the uncontroversial part of Sarvarkar's contribution to the freedom struggle.
Two of the most prominent poems are:
Sagara Pran-a Talamal-la
and Jayostu-te..
I seem to recall renditions of these by Hridyanath Mangeshkar but I could be off on that.

Re: Indian Patriotic Songs
These are the songs I used to sing in the School Choir in 8th Standard in freezing Cold of Delhi in December(wearing shorts and knee length wollen socks) :
(a)
Morcha Bhikar Na Jaye
Gir Na Jaye Kaal Santri
Ise Sambhalana...
Mashaal Thhamana...
Krishn ke Swadesh, Kashmir Kesari..
Ek Aur Shatru Aaj Sima Par Aa Gaya
Madhuban Me Aag Lagi aur Dhooan Chaa Gaya
Ise Sambhalana...
Mashaal Thhamana...
(b)
Woh Din hai kitna door
Jab Apne Apne
Sab ke Sapne
Honge Pooray
Yeh Desh mera Jaage
Jag main Sabse Aage
Pawan Tirath jaise sabhi ko lage
Who Din hai Kitna Door...
(c)
Jalte Chirag
Gul na hoon
Bhujte Diye Jaloo tum
Prem ki Jyoti Kam na Ho
Gao yeh Geet Gayo tum

Top of my head Mohan Raju garu>>
("Gori, gori, Banki chori") originally from an old Hindi movie.
Is extremely unique song IIRC sung by Mannadey to the music score by Shankar Jaikishen, IT is unique because it is a hindustani(style) clasical song to the beat of western (guitar lead) music.
Very unique experimentation in those days (60s and 70s)

I stand corrected, the Music is bu Chitragupt no Shankar Jaikishen.
The movie is
Adhi Raat Ki Baad. (13the row in that page)
Only Manna Dey can do that kind of thing.

Re: Indian Patriotic Songs
Don't know if it has already been posted. One of the most poignant patriotic songs is from Bimal Roy's Bandini, sung by Manna Dey, music S.D. Burman, lyrics (probably) Shailendra. As best as I can recall, the song is sung by a freedom fighter as he is being led to "Fansi," as the poor, heart-broken mother is crying outside the prison walls. This is how the brave son solaces his mother. Bet you, there was not one dry eye in the theatre as the song was being played...and the same would be true today.
Mat Ro Mata, Lal Tere Bahot Hain Tere,
Mat Ro...
Janam Bhumi Ke Kam Aaya Hoon Main,
Bade Bhag Hain Mere.
Phir Janmoonga Us Din Jab Azad Bahegi Ganga,
Ganga Maiyan...
Taron Mein Tu Dekhegi,
Hasta Ek Naya Tiranga
Hoh, Mat Ro Mata, Lal Tere Bahot Hain Tere
Mat Roh.

Btw that song has been posted by Vasu, if I am not mistaken, on the first page of this thread itself...Not the full lyrics.
Added few minutes later...
Sorry, it is not by Vasu but by SBA...checked it just now..
If it was already 6/7/8 page thread it might have been understandable to some extent. But, when it is only 2 page thread and one is not willing to go thru, what is one to say? And that too, when the thread is kind of about patriotism. I don't think, it is too much for anyone to go thru 2 pages of posts which deal with patriotism. Unless it is one of those , "Me too" .......Don't know if it has already been posted
