Agni missile to be inducted after one more test
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday, July 24, 2002 (New Delhi):

India will carry out one more test of the 700 km short range Agni missile prior to its production and induction into the armed forces, Defence Minister George Fernandes told the Rajya Sabha today. The development work of the shorter-range Agni-I missile has been completed.

On whether the government proposed to conduct more missile tests in view of the series of tests by Pakistan recently, Fernandes said: "Design, development and test flights of missile systems is a continuous process based on strategic requirements of the Indian armed forces and security requirements of the nation."

The shorter range Agni-1 missile was successfully test-fired in January this year and the government has already announced that the 2,500 km medium range Agni missile had entered serial production, with two army missile units set up to be equipped with these strategic missile.

The development work on Ground to Air Trishul and Akash missiles as well as the fourth generation Nag anti-tank missile would be completed by December 2003 and December 2004.

These missiles would then be ready for user trials, serial production and induction. The Indo-Russian joint venture BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was likely to enter production phase by the end of 2003 and would be inducted by 2004.

Seven developmental missile flight trials had been carried out since January this year which included two test flights of Naval version of the Trishul missile in its sea skimming role, one of Brahmos, one test of ground to air Akash and two tests of anti-tank Nag missile.

One Laboratory of the DRDO was dedicated to conducting flight tests of missiles and in addition large number of scientists and personnel from other laboratories, who had developed the missile support system, were also involved in the project.

The DRDO scientists were also working on the advanced light Combat aircraft, which could be accommodated in a smaller carrier.

The project definition phase as well as pre-project phase for developing a naval variant of the Light Combat Aircraft had been completed and its full-scale engineering development proposal was under consideration of the government.

The proposal included design, development, building and ground testing of two aircraft and a structural specimen and carrying out flight-testing for approximately 400 hours towards operational clearance. (PTI)

India's field guns upgrade snag
The Indian Army is facing "quality problems" over the two-year-old contract with Soltam of Israel to upgrade 180 M-46 130mm field guns to 155mm/39-cal and 155mm/45-cal configurations.
(Jane's Defence Weekly 22 March 2000).

52-caliber G5 for India revealed
Denel has released photographs of the G5-2000, an upgraded version of LIW's widely sold G5 155mm towed howitzer, which it is offering to the Indian Army. The baseline G5 has a 45-caliber tube with a 23-liter chamber volume. In its place LIW has installed the same 'standardization-oriented' JBMOU (Joint Ballistics Memorandum of Understanding-compliant
52-caliber/23-liter ordnance that it initially developed for the T6 Kingfisher self-propelled (SP) howitzer proposed to India and for the JBMOU version of the G6-52 wheeled SP howitzer (see IDR 11/2001, pp63-70).
This has a higher pressure limit (PIMP 444Mpa) than normal JBMOU ordnance systems, allowing it to fire both compliant and heavier non-compliant (ERFB-type) projectiles using standard NATO six-zone bi-modular charge systems (BMCS), such as Somchem's M91/92. Equally it can utilize Somchem's five-zone M64 BMCS, optimized for the ERFB.
