IAF plans permanent commission for women
(The Hindu, 23 Nov 2002)
Mumbai, Nov 22. (PTI): The Indian Air Force (IAF) is considering giving women permanent commission and also inducting them in all non-officers cadre. "Some women officers were taken for 10 years commission and now is the time for evaluating, reviewing and recommending them for permanent absorption in the IAF," Air Vice Marshall P S Ahluwalia said here today while addressing the 'International Conference on Women in Aviation'.
The Air Vice Marshal said women in IAF have acquainted themselves well and added: "We have had no problem as far as women are concerned in all spheres." He said because of constraints they have not been posted at the border. Women constituted nearly four per cent of the officers in the air force, he added.
Former chief designer and director of Aeronautical Development Agency Kota Harinarayan said women in Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd played a major role in the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme. Women constituted nearly 25 per cent of the work force for the LCA programme and he emphasised their role they had played in the development of the aircraft. The two day conference was organised by the Aeronautical Society of Indian Women Pilot Association and is being attended by women pilots from the domestic and private airlines as well as those from the defence services.

Increasing interest in flying among Andhra NCC cadets
Deccan Chronicle, 28 Nov 2002
The sky is their limit!
Man has always dreamt of flying, ever since history was first recorded. An aviator’s first flying experience, irrespective of whether it was a success or not, will remain as an unforgettable experience in his memory. FLY HIGH: Members of the National Cadet Corps at Gannavaram Airport, aiming to make a career in the Indian Air force
The unquestionable thrill that one gets by a gliding or a flying experience is something that many adventure lovers seek but few are able to realise the dream. However, the dream did become reality for hundreds of school and college boys and girls at Gannavaram airport in the city. In recent times, the response for flying and gliding camps has increased tremendously given the convenient location at Gannavaram airport. Students who join National Cadet Corps of Vijayawada, Machilipatnam, Tenali and Guntur are being trained at the airport with the help of Microlite aircrafts and gliders.
"It’s not merely training but also the valuable inputs if one wants to make a career with the Indian Air Force. This time more than 700 students will actually experience the thrill of being up there in the skies." says Wing Commander V V S Subba Rao. What is particularly heartening is the number of girl cadets who have been participating in the camps with unbridled enthusiasm."It is a thrilling experience floating up there with the air around you, it is difficult to put the joy into words." exclaims Dheeraj, a student of Andhra Loyola College who enjoys gliding and flying. Dheeraj has been selected as a gliding pilot in a recent camp.
"My passion for flying drove me to join the Air Wing of the NCC. Flying at a height of 1500 feet gives me a kick and joining the Air Force I thought was the obvious step," says Bhavani Shankar who has participated in many national level camps. Flying instructors and technicians vote for Gannavaram airfield as the best for gliding and flying. "Two seated Microlite will have an engine that can take it to 1500 feet and a instructor pilot will be accompanying the student during the flights," explains Subba Rao.
For the last few years, thousands of youngsters have been trained in 8 (A) Air Squadron NCC based at Vijayawada. The camps also provide the cadets of various backgrounds to come together, eat and stay together to promote the universal feeling of brotherhood. Students from Andhra Loyola College, SAS College, SKPVH School, NSM Public School, VPS Public School, Kakatiya EM School, St Thomas of Nuzivid and many other renowned schools and colleges have experienced the joy of flying and gliding at Gannavaram air field.
