Air Force cadets get 'toughend up'
(Times of India, 07 December 2002)

HYDERABAD: Several trainees of the Air Force Academy, Dindigal were injured and had to be treated at a hospital after being "punished" by seniors. A fresh batch of trainees had joined various courses in July this year. With the punishments meted out to them by seniors becoming severe, some of the freshers had to be admitted to the Military Hospital, Trimulgherry, for treatment.

"I cannot confirm or deny this. It is classified information," Lt Col Dr V K Sinha of the hospital, who reportedly treated the victims, said when contacted. Senior officers of the academy confirmed some trainees had to be given medical treatment but insisted their injuries were not due to ragging. Some of the freshers also had to be sent back home for nearly a month for recuperation.

The punishments the seniors gave ranged from not allowing the freshers to sleep or go to the toilet, walking on their knees and making them run for several kilometres. In some cases, some trainees had to use crutches for walking after being punished. Victims included both male and female trainees and all were treated at the Military Hospital, Trimulgherry. "It was gruesome," said a person who saw the trainees' injuries. However, senior officers of the academy insisted there was no ragging.

"What has happened in the Academy is normal," said academy commandant Air Vice-Marshal V K Verma. He said there was no ragging in the academy but there were instances of "seniors teaching the juniors informally". Another official, Sq Ldr D D Mishra, an instructor in the academy, explained that seniors dealing with juniors who were not "disciplined" was "official". He said among the senior cadets a few "appointment holders" were empowered to punish the cadets. The appointment holders from among the seniors were the Academy Cadet Captain, Academy Cadet Adjutant and the Squadron Cadet Captain.

"Unless one learns to obey orders, one cannot learn," he said. Sq Ldr Mishra said the freshers could be punished by making them run for a kilometre or forced to do the 'putty parade'. In the 'putty parade', a cadet will have to change seven or eight dresses in a stipulated time.

No room for losers in Army
[The Hindu, 10 December 2002]

Dehra Dun, Dec 10: Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw today called upon the Gentlemen Cadets passing out of the Indian Military Academy as officers to remember that "there is no room for losers in India's Army."

"If you lose, do not come back...the country will not accept you," said the Field Marshal who was the chief guest and reviewing officer at this morning's passing out parade. "Since I joined the army, there have come about drastic changes in arms, ammunition, transport and communication systems but one thing which has remained the same is the duty, the task which has to be done by you. You are required, as we were, to ensure the security of the country against any aggression," said the Field Marshal while addressing the passing out cadets at the hallowed Chetwode Square in the academy's north campus.

The Field Marshal, who was commissioned into the army in 1934, exhorted the cadets to fight and fight to win. "You will not be rich but will be respected wherever you go. You will have what riches cannot get you," said the 89 year-old Manekshaw, the oldest living Field Marshal in the world. Earlier, Chief of Army Staff, General S. Padmanabhan, IMA Commandant Lt. Gen Tajinder Singh Shergill and IMA Deputy Commandant Lt. Gen Ashok Kapoor took the salute at the parade, which commenced at 8:55 a.m. and concluded at 10:35 a.m. amid extremely cold and cloudy weather.

Army units to be given citations for service in Gujarat

http://www.deepikaglobal.com/ENG3_sub.asp?ccode=ENG3&newscode=19989

Mumbai, Dec 13 (UNI) Seven units of the Indian Army will be awarded for their exemplary service in providing relief to the victims of the devastating earthquake in Gujarat last year. The citations will be awarded by Lieutenant General G S Sihota, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Command at the Vijay Diwas Investiture Ceremony next Monday. Major General T K Kaul, General Officer Commanding, Maharashtra and Gujarat Area told a news conference here that the seven units to be recognised for their services are 90 Medium Regiment, 325 Light Air Defence Regiment (Composite), 12 Engineer Regiment, 13 Engineer Regiment, 6 Maratha Light Infantry, 9 Mahar and Military and Military Hospital Bhuj. "These units of Southern Command are being given unit citations for their relentless work during Operation Sahayata launched in Bhuj for rehabilitation work after the earthquake last year," Maj Gen Kaul said.

Indian Army sources said that its units were among the first to reach the quake-devastated areas of the Kutch district. Besides this, some other awards including one Yudh Seva Medal, 39 Sena Medals, three Bar to Sena Medal and 16 Vishist Seva Medals will also be given at the function which will be attended by the top brass of the three services. Gallantry awards of this nature are generally presented by the President at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. However, due to large number of awardees this year, Mumbai will host this ceremony. Army sources said that this year, the Investiture ceremony which was originally scheduled on January 15, had to be postponed due to deployment of troops on borders.
