IAF going ahead with LCH plans
(Business Standard, 06 Feb 2003)

The Indian Air Force is going ahead with its plans to procure the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) and the HJT-36 — the intermediate jet trainer. IAF has already given Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) the clearance for the design and development of the LCH. The first LCH, which is currently undergoing various tests, will be ready within the next two years. It will formally inducted into the IAF's fleet within the next five years, Chief of Air Staff S. Krishnaswamy said.

"We are already evaluating Dhruv — the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) for induction into our fleet. The LCH, which is a dedicated combat variant of ALH, is specially designed for combat situations with air-to-air missiles. It will escort the other combat helicopters," Krishnaswamy said. The air chief added that India is currently focusing on lightweight helicopters unlike America and Russia, which manufacture heavier versions of the same. "As it is much lighter than other helicopters, manoeuvering in any terrain is easier. The front end of the helicopter is clearly optimised for a typical combat situation and the cockpit is equipped with multifunctional displays designed for night attack. It clearly offers an element of surprise to the enemy," Krishnaswamy added.

Sources close to the HAL said that initially about 60 units of LCH would be manufactured for the IAF and would be delivered in various phases. On the delay in displaying the HJT-36 at the air show, Krishnaswamy said that they could not run the risk of using a prototype for display. He added that the time frame for the induction of the first jet trainer has been reduced to 16 months from the 20 months. "Our first order for these jet trainers will be for the Surya Kirans. Initially, we will be procuring 16 aircraft with the first unit bearing the Indian flag," Krishnaswamy said.
