Indian tests of Israeli missile system may lead to orders

Recent Indian Navy tests of an Israeli-made anti-missile system are expected to result in follow-on orders for the supersonic, vertical launch ship defense missile. In interviews here, Indian and Israeli officials said an enhanced version of the Israeli Barak naval air defense system successfully intercepted two Russian-made missile targets in early September tests by the Indian Navy off the coast of Goa, in southwestern India.
"It was a splendid two-for-two performance. They launched two [Baraks] against two incoming missiles, and they destroyed them head-on," a recently retired Indian General still associated with military modernization efforts, said. An Israeli defense official here confirmed the tests, as did representatives of Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) Ltd., and Rafael Armament Development Authority, partners in development and production of the Barak system. Leading executives of the two firms were accompanying Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon here Sept. 9-11 on the first state visit to India of an Israeli premier since the two nations established diplomatic ties in 1992.
"It was a significant test, since the missile was evaluated under particularly rigorous conditions," an Israeli industry official said. Defense officials from both countries said New Delhi has agreed to purchase at least eight new systems. The package follows an initial $270 million package concluded in 2001. The Israeli Barak system is designed to intercept sea-skimming missiles, cruise missiles, or air-launched missiles in daylight, at night and under any weather conditions. It has an intercept range from a minimum of 500 meters to beyond 10 kilometers.

Indian Maritime Force Spending Plan Includes New Boats, Aircraft

The Maritime Force, India's coast guard, on Sept. 16 presented the government with its plan for spending its $1.7 billion 2002-2007 budget, a service source said. "Nearly 50% of the $1.7 billion allocated to the coast guard by the Indian Planning Commission will be spent on acquiring new ships, weapons, and equipment," a senior Indian Maritime Force official said. Currently, the Maritime Force has more than 50 vessels, including offshore patrol, advanced offshore patrol and interceptor boats; and more than 40 aircraft and helicopters, including the homegrown Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH).
The official said the coast guard plans to induct around 10 maritime surveillance aircraft, helicopters and speed boats into service under the new five-year budget. The Maritime Force already has ordered 65 ALHs to replace its fleet of Chetak helicopters. The Maritime Force's ALH will have the capability to hover over water for long periods. It also will be equipped with a powerful radar that can spot small smuggler's boats as well as large foreign fishing vessels, stronger engines to perform consistently in high humidity. The Coast Guard also aims to acquire 30 new offshore patrol vessels and fast patrol vessels under the new budget.

New ships to tilt balance towards India

Mumbai: The induction of new stealth frigates of 'Talwar' and 'Shivalik' class, besides the acquisition of ex-Soviet aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov will further tilt the balance of maritime power towards India, a senior Navy officer said here today. "These ships will enhance the blue-water capabilities of the three-dimensional Indian Navy", said Vice-Admiral Arun Prakash, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command (WNC).
Talking to reporters on board INS Trishul, on its arrival in Indian waters, he said that the third of these class of Russian-built frigates armed with Club-class missiles and the 'Shtil' air defence system, INS Tabar, was expected to arrive by this year end or early next year. Admiral Prakash, who will take over as Vice-Chief of Naval Staff next month, said the three ships of Talwar class had enhanced the capabilities of the Western fleet manifold.
