THE AN-32 transport aircraft that developed problems in its landing gear on Wednesday night had another narrow escape as after landing on the tarmac, it collided with a blue bull (neelgai) on the runway.
Information collected by Hindustan Times reveals the exact sequence of events, which led to the crash landing scare. The AN-32 belonged to Camels Squadron of the Indian Air Force based in Chandigarh and was operating on a routine training flight.
Speaking to HT, on condition of anonymity, an Air Force officer said the aircraft took off under normal conditions, but when it completed its sortie and lowered its landing gear, the pilot observed that the nose landing gear’s warning light had not been activated. Since it was a night sortie, it was difficult to ascertain even from the ground if the gear was actually not down or there was something wrong with the warning panel.
The pilot immediately informed the Air Traffic Control of the development upon which emergency services were put on stand-by and extra fire tenders were requisitioned from the Chandigarh Fire Service.
In the meantime, the ATC guided the pilot of the aircraft through a series of procedures in order to activate the landing gear. One of these remedies worked and the pilot noted that the control panel showed that the gear had indeed been lowered. The aircraft finally prepared to land, taking all precautions as it was still not known whether the landing gear was correctly in place or not. However, the worst was not yet over. The aircraft had barely landed when it collided with a blue bull on the runway, causing damages to the same landing gear.
Apparently, though the Air Force Station is now clear from heavy foliage, which earlier attracted animals, there are still some blue bulls who manage to get inside the perimeter by breaking through the fence. However, this problem will be solved once the perimeter wall, which is currently under construction, comes up around the base.

Make 200-seater jet aircraft, Kalam tells scientists
Hyderabad, Dec. 15 (PTI): President A P J Abdul Kalam, today asked the aeronautical scientists to work towards a mission of making a 200-seater passenger jet aircraft to propel India into a leadership position in the world.
"Take it as a mission and make it a reality," Kalam said in his address through a video-conference at the two-day seminar on 'Aerospace technology challenges in the millennium'.
Speaking passionately about future plans in aerospace technologies, the President said the most important challenge lay in the area of hypersonic transport system.
"When hypersonic passenger aircraft becomes a reality, it will make global distances appear miniscule and will have a striking impact on the way we transact our trade," he said and called for synergising various high-performance sectors including the aerospace sector.
Kalam also spoke about the possibility of developing a long-range aerial unmanned vehicle with a large payload which can be used for myriad applications including civilian and disaster management purposes.
He also urged the aeronautical community to participate in the ambitious project of inter-linking of rivers by contributing in the area of aerial imaging.

India, Lanka reach defence deal
Lt. Gen. Balagalle revealed that an agreement had been signed with the Indian Air Force to lease out their aircraft. These aircraft are to be used to transport troops from Ratmalana to the Palaly airbase in the Jaffna peninsula.
He said that a lack of transport planes at present caused a heavy delay in the movement of troops to Jaffna and its immediate environs. Lt. Gen. Balagalle also revealed that another agreement had been signed with the Indian authorities to conduct urgently needed repairs to the runway at the Palaly airbase.
This was to facilitate the easy use of aircraft to be leased from the Indian Air Force. Lt. Gen. Balagalle's visit to India where close defence co-operation arrangements have been worked out comes at a time when the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) had moved in to forge closer ties with India.
