Army unveils plan to equip infantryman for tomorrow's wars

Army unveils plan to equip infantryman for tomorrow's wars

New Delhi, Dec 21 (UNI) The Indian Army has presented an innovative plan for the modernisation of its infantry formations to take the lead in combined-arms conflict and called on the domestic industry to help in supplying the equipment needed.

The plan, termed 'F-INSAS' (Future Infantry Soldier as a System), is based on the prevailing trends which indicate 'infantry-centric' pattern of warfare will predominate in the present and even for the foreseeable future at all strategic, operational and tactical levels, the Director General Infantry Lt Gen K Nagaraj said here.

'F-INSAS' is designed to enhance the survivability, lethality and the mobility of a soldier,' he said, n a presentation on the concluding day of the Army-Industry Partnership Meet-2003 here yesterday.

''Modernisation of the infantry until now was confined to systems, weapon platforms and the like, and the ultimate user -- the infantryman -- was forgotten,'' he said, adding that he hoped that the Indian industry could rise to the challenge in equipping the infantryman in a composite manner.

A modular weapon system, an integrated helmet assembly, a portable computer-radio, protective clothing and other individual equipment form the components of the F-INSAS, Lt Gen Nagaraj said, stressing that a basic postulate of the plan is the soldier's interest.

''We do not intend to burden the soldier. We are looking at a maximum total weight of 20 to 25 kg for all this equipment,'' he pointed out.

Listing the other infantry modernisation programmes being undertaken globally like the US 'Land Warrior: the First Integrated Soldier Fighting System for Dismounted Infantrymen,' the German 'Future Infantryman System' (IdZ), the French 'Fassin a equipment et liasons integres' (FASIN) and the British 'Future Integrated Soldier Technology' (FIST), which differs from the previous in focussing on an infantry section in the dismounted close combat role than an individual soldier, he said all these sought to use 'cutting edge technologies' for the automated, electronic battlefield of the future.

Arjun tanks to roll out soon

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2003 06:20:46 AM ]

NEW DELHI: The country’s first six ‘‘Arjun’’ main battle tanks, a project launched 25 years ago, are finally set to roll out for induction into the Army, which has placed an order for 124 such tanks.

Fifty frontline T-90S tanks, imported from Russia in a ‘‘completely-knocked down’’ condition, will also be indigenously assembled by next year, Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) chairperson P K Mishra announced on Tuesday.

India has already received 120 T-90S tanks from Russia , according to the 1999 contract. Another 190 T-90S tanks are being imported in ‘‘completely-knocked down or semi-knocked down condition’’ for indigenous assembly at the Avadi Heavy Vehicle Factory. India hopes to commence indigenous production of these tanks by 2007.

Mishra also said the 155mm artillery gun systems, indigenously developed by ‘‘upgunning’’ the 130mm guns, had been widely acclaimed by experts.

I've been good, life caught up with after years of procrastination :D

Slightly off topic, but rather funny - shows what may happen in military one-upmanships
The British army wanted to show off their beach landing skills and prove that they can be as good as the Royal marines

Edit: There's also a video at the end.
