India test-fires extended version of Prithvi missile

The extended version of Prithvi, country's most sophisticated medium range surface-to-surface missile, was successfully test fired from the integrated test range (ITR) at Chandipur on Friday. The missile has a range of about 150 to 200 kms, defence sources said. The extended version has been developed for Indian Air Force (IAF) and was test fired from a mobile launcher at about 10.10 am from the ITR, about 13 km from here, the sources said. The 8.5-metre-high and one metre thick missile had a perfect lift-off, the sources said.
Prithvi test firing was part of the continuous effort to further fine tune the missile which has already been inducted into the Army, they said. Part of the country's Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, the missile has the latest on-board computer and an advanced inertial navigation system. It can use both solid and liquid propellant fuel. Prithvi has a launch weight of 4.6 tonnes including a one tonne pay load. This variant of the missile takes just 300 seconds to reach the target located at a distance of 150 km, the sources added.

India likely to conduct series of Agni III tests

NEW DELHI: India may test-fire a series of its most lethal surface-to-surface 3,000-km range ballistic missile Agni III anytime this year, the country's top defence scientist Dr V.K. Atre indicated. To ensure that the tests are conducted without any hitch, Dr Atre said that defence scientists are taking no chances for its launch. Dr Atre was quoted as saying that India has put in to operation, elaborate plans to ensure that the test firing is successful. The announcement of the tests of the completely solid fuel missile would be made only after it was launched, he said.
Any failure in the launch would be a great setback to the defence scientists, Atre said. The defence scientists were working overtime to ensure a flawless launch of the missile, he added. On the recent tests of the upgraded version of Prithvi II, Atre said that these missiles with an enhanced range of 250 km were test fired successfully using indigenous global positioning system (GPS) to give them greater accuracy. He rejected that there was any move to change the propellants of the Prithvi missile from liquid to solid, saying that such shorter range missiles were more accurate with liquid fuel.
