School children wave India's national flag over a displayed Indian army tank during "Vijay Diwas" or victory day celebrations in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad July 26, 2008. The Indian army commemorates "Vijay Diwas" annually in memory of more than 500 fellow soldiers who were killed nine years ago during a war with Pakistan in the mountains of Kargil and Drass sectors, at the Line of Control, or a military ceasefire line, which divided Kashmir between the two south Asian nuclear rivals.
A member of the Indian Commandos (L) and a member of the US Army Special Forces undergo a joint training programme at the Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School of the Indian Army (CIJW) at Vairengte in Mizoram, in 2007. A contingent of US Special Forces, or Green Berets, will team up with Indian soldiers to train in jungle warfare, officials said on Saturday.

The mortal remains of Indian soldier Ajit Shivaji Gavkar is carried for the funeral in Mumbai on July 31, 2008. Gavkar 34, serving the 25 Rashtriya Rifle Regiment, posted at Rajouri in Jammu was killed on 28 July, 2008 in the recent exchange of fire along the Indo-Pak border. According to Indian Army spokesman "A group of Pakistani troops crossed into the Indian part of disputed Kashmir Monday and shot dead Gavkar, sparking a gun battle. The complaint of an incursion by Pakistani troops is the first to be made by India since 1999, when the nuclear-armed South Asian rivals fought a mini-war in the Kargil peaks along the Line of Control dividing Kashmir. Pakistan and India agreed to a ceasefire in November 2003 along the Line of Control, and the two sides launched a peace process in January 2004.

You talking about the Kids or the Media?OK, who will tell them that its a Pakistani Patton?
The kids probably have been told its a vanquished Pakistani tank and so perhaps the Indian flags on top is supposed to be symbolic of victory.
However, the media might need refresher lessons on Defense Journalism

This dude and this website has come up so many times on BR I have lost count. I don't know whether he is good or bad but I am quite sure the Army doesn't go to him for training. He may though give some training to police units.rkhanna wrote:Any Idea what this is all about.

Only other example I know is Former Punjab Police DIG Julius Robiero's (sorry for the spelling) bodyguard used to be a karate blackbelt and he after Robiero's retirement left Punjab police and then came back to train the punjab police commandos on contractual basis. last I know he had knocked up Jullundhur DM's daughter and was hiding This was way back in the 1990's.

Dubious Training
I have seen this site before offering training (or claiming to).
As another poster has said they may train police forces but I doubt they train the actual military.
On the link about reflex shooting/CQB, there is a line of men and a thin woman showing them how to use a rifle.
With all due respect to her I find it hard to believe that she has much combat experience. Theoretical CQB/shooting on the range and real life combat are totally different.
If Indian forces both regular and SF train with western forces why would they need to go to an outfit like this ??

That website is a sham
That couple has no - nada - zilch combat experience
And no - the SF would not touch them with a barge pole.

Admins, are we going to have exercise sections for Army Page in BR?
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
ajay, there is too little info about these type of exercises to warrant a stand alone thread.
a few pics will probably be all we get.

A thread on training in the armed forces, separately by Service could possibly serve the purpose.

Former Shiv Sena Chief Minister Manohar Joshi, Sena Mayor Shubha Raul and the customary Ward/District leaders of Sena were present.
AS Gavkar lived in Naigaon, a traditional Sena stronghold.
To answer your question, none of the Thackrey clam was present, but Sena was. Dunno about other political parties.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
BTW, as per the report, the Army told the family AS Gavkar died of brain tumour and not in a battle. Now what is true? In either case, the Army should have a better reporting mechanism to the family concerned. In this case, a police constable informed them of the news. Wonder why the Army cant or cannot do it, or at least get someone from the TA to do it? (This is a question out of ignorance, no criticism intended)
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
I would imagine the swiftest method would be a telegram...
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Telegrams have been phased out I think. DoP doesnt do telegrams anymore?
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
True, in this changing world there are some ways in which our ultra-conservative Armed Forces need to change. The system of informing families of soldiers killed in battle or as other casualties is one. What was till now the traditional method of sending the news by telegram is outdated.
I feel a system can be tried out where the nearest Armed Forces unit personally informs the bereaved family through a messenger of appropriate rank. The Govt has already issued instructions that the local administrative and police authorities are to be present at the funeral.

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Sorry folks but this is a bit of a rant. Not against the police who are doing a very difficult job but against all the bloody political parties and specially the govt which puts them into these difficult situations and then "hopes" they can control it with the pathetic gear they have. These guys are at the fore front of the counter insurgency campaign more so than the army. I don't remember whether it was baljeet or mandeep one of you had even mentioned having relatives who in their prime youth while serving with the police have lost an eye.
These guys have the worst riot control gear dating back decades. even tinpot countries like bolivia etc.. have better gear.
its time some ex-CRPF files a PIL forcing the govt to improve their gear.
This last picture shows the frustration of the CRPF as they ended up attacking an ambulance.
The appearance as a powerful cohesive force makes riot control effective. This only makes them look like chaprasis meant to be slapped around

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Are these policemen from the CRPF ? They appear to be the Jammu and Kashmir Police to me. A force which has improved tremendously and emerged as as an efficient, dedicated police service.
I second the point about proper riot gear. It doesn't cost much but will give policement great confidence while facing violent mobsn increase their efficiency in riot situations and of course protect them from injury.

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Pics No. 1, 3, 5 and 7 seem to contain CRPF personnel.
The rest look like JKP to me. Can tell (among other things) by the distinctive insignia on the upper sleeve.

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
IIRC the initial reports of the recent Kupwara Incursion claimed that the unit under attack was 22 Rajput and the Indian soldier killed was Sepoy Mahesh Singh. It may be a case of sloppy reporting compounded over time.Tanaji wrote:BTW, as per the report, the Army told the family AS Gavkar died of brain tumour and not in a battle. Now what is true? Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Seeing the ratio of the mob to the police in these pictures, and knowing the nature of this particular mob, I don't think more riot-gear would make much of a difference. In fact the police coming up in their regular clothes and un-masked faces is probably more effective in this case: It is one thing to hit a faceless and masked uniform, quite another thing to face up to your friendly local constable (and someone you KNOW who can easily make your - and your family's - life a living hell once the protests are over; one small report filed away and you can't take a p!ss at night without reporting to the local station for permission).ssmitra wrote:The appearance as a powerful cohesive force makes riot control effective. Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
These policemen are all from the Jammu and Kashmir Police. There are subtle differences in uniform and equipment between the two forces. And in J&K the CRPF has taken the place of the BSF as a CI force and not a riot control force.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Unfortunately that does little to prevent a rock hitting you in the eye. or anywhere on your body causing grievous harm. Riot control in our country is one of the worst.ParGha wrote:Seeing the ratio of the mob to the police in these pictures, and knowing the nature of this particular mob, I don't think more riot-gear would make much of a difference. Policing methods and operating procedures are archaic at best and left over from the British system with the sole aim of subjugating the population. What you say about "friendly local constable " is very true but its also true if he misbehaves with you or your family and you object.
.
Here are some images from Riot control police in different countries. We can always say the RAF is like this but in reality even their equipment is bad.
my point is we have become a nation with one of the strongest economies. May be we should start spending more on our jawans and also retrain and re-equip our police.
We something is not done soon then high pressure situation as we are observing in Jammu and Kashmir could well lead to situation like the Manipur Rifles incident in 2000.
I wanted to post this one below yesterday. It gives an idea of the projectiles thrown by the protesters
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Of course I would object (and much more), but more importantly and first off I wouldn't give him reason to do so. I wouldn't force people to shut-down their businesses and disrupt others' lives. I wouldn't gang up with a couple of hundred young men from my area and bottle up a dozen policemen. I wouldn't start pushing around peace-officers. I wouldn't start throwing stones at them. I wouldn't do any of these especially if my neighborhood has a reputation for occasionally hosting tangos. Heck, I wouldn't unbuckle my seat-belt without requesting due permission and reaching for the release slowly, deliberately and in clear view. I don't endanger his life or well-being, hence I would object if he did. The young men in those mobs have done all that... and more. You see why I wouldn't object to seeing them paid back in some small measure for their misdeeds?ssmitra wrote:

I think immediate and responsible presence is more important than gear. Nip things in the bud, if you will. Gucci-gear equipped police aren't necessarily more effective. But if you can spend on numbers AND gear, all the power to you.my point is we have become a nation with one of the strongest economies. May be we should start spending more on our jawans and also retrain and re-equip our police.
