When Central Govt's own tail is on fire, asking for help from otherwise painted as devil Modi (the Hindu extreamist & criminal) is fine. So much for secularism and its innate strength.

Easy to preach escapist philosophy, but the knuckles come off when their butt gets kicked.

Centre takes Modi's help over SIMI ban
NDTV Correspondent
Wednesday, August 20, 2008, (New Delhi)
The Centre has taken the Gujarat government's help to justify the ban on SIMI, saying that the outfit is responsible for the Ahmedabad serial blasts.

After the High Court tribunal lifted the ban on the outfit on August 5, the central government got a stay on it from the Supreme Court.

In a fresh affidavit filed on Wednesday in the apex court, the Centre said that the recent Ahmedabad serial blasts involved SIMI and the organisation has extended support to terrorist outfits in Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The affidavit also says that SIMI has nexus with international terrorist outfits.

It also says that around 1900 SIMI men are in jail involving 80 cases across the country.

The Centre has said that SIMI's activities are against the integrity and the secular fabric of the country.

If anyone believes that the intentions and activities of these so-called "Christian" cults are harmless to the country's security, then he or she is living in a fool's paradise. There has been a deliberate and concerted effort by the Bush establishment, brought into power by the right-wing evngelical "Christian" neo-con movement in the US,to pro-actively destabilise and seduce democratic liberal nations like India itno the US camp by every means possible. That India is the most tolerant country in the world when it comes to religious freedom, unlike the US (remember how Rajneesh was treated and hounded out of the US),makes it very easy to penetrate using the cover of missionary work. These latter day "missionaries" are not the same as those of the Victorian era of the Raj,who toiled for decades in establishing hospitals, schools, sanitoriums ,etc. in areas of the country where no such facilities existed before. They worked among the lepers too and tried to uplift the lowest levels of society.

The current crop of evangelicals, are more in tune with US "televangelists",who rake in money from the faithful in the millions, fly around the world in private jets like Benny Hinn, with their bodyguards in tow and whose are in reality storm troopers for the CIA and other agencies of the US establishment. Most regrettably, many Christian leaders today in the country have become politicians, are hideously corrupt and use their status and influence with the rulers of the day (votebank concious) to avoid investigations into their illegal activities. Most of the evangelical groups obtain funding from abroad, especially the US and this makes it extremely easy for the CIA to garner much "humint" in India. This is why it is so easy for the likes of shady characters lihe Heywood, etc. to vanish just before they are exposed as being linked to terrorist outfits and foreign intel. agencies.

A complete thorough investigation by the GOI/Intel agencies is needed into all so-called Christian evangelical groups and even the mainstream churches to discover and expose the nefarious anti-Indian activities of some of them who abuse both religion and nationality for foreign largesse.

Cong, BSP and SP ‘cheerleaders of terrorism’: BJP
“The charge of the BJP that the UPA and its allies are soft on terror now witnesses a conclusive evidence with the visit of Ram Naresh Yadav (Congress), Akbar Ahmad Dumpy (BSP) and Abu Azmi (SP) to the Azamgarh village of Mufti Abu Bashir, the SIMI terrorist responsible for blasts in Ahmedabad,” BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy told reporters.

BJP was also critical of Syed Ahmad Bukhari, Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid, for visiting the parents of Bashir.

“The Congress, BSP and SP have become cheerleaders of these terrorist organisations, groups and individuals who are mercilessly targeting and killing innocents across the nation,” Rudy said.

Mike misses the big party
Saturday August 23 2008 02:22 IST
Aditya Sinha

We assume our nation is in the hands of the wise, the balanced, the judicious, the magnanimous, and the visionary. Instead,we find ourselves at the mercy of luminaries like the National Security Advisor, M K “Mike” Narayanan. No wonder that there are parts of our nation intent on tearing themselves apart.

Though Mike has so far escaped the opprobrium that commentators have heaped on Shivraj Patil (one called him Minister for Rome Affairs, so easy a target is he), this column cannot help but commiserate with Mike. Because of a bunch of damn protestors in Srinagar and in Jammu, he has had to miss out on the jamboree in Vienna, where India’s top minds were trying to convince the 45-member nuclear suppliers’ cartel to allow India to do nuclear commerce.

For Mike, the nuclear deal has been one long party. He got to travel the world, rub shoulders with the Americans, and soak in the limelight in Washington DC, Vienna, Singapore, and other world capitals — all the while trying to make the case for allowing India to inhabit an existential twilight zone where it would become the not-fullybut- only-sort-of-declared-yet-still-non-proliferating nuclear state.

As he has been dealing with an issue involving the ultimate currency of human power, you can’t blame Mike for feeling a bit like Major “King” Kong, the air commander who straddles a nuclear warhead as it is launched at the climax of Stanley Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove or:How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. You can just picture Mike, a big missile between his legs, humming to himself: They like me in London/ They love me in Berlin/They hugged me in Moscow/And also in Beijing. It’s a heady thing.

It’s not surprising then that Mike does not have time for Kashmir, for Maoists, for Islamist terrorists, or even for the former Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf. (Come to think of it, even Mike’s boss doesn’t seem to have time for anything besides the nuclear deal. Come to think of it, who IS his boss — benefactor Sonia Gandhi or Prime Minister Manmohan Singh? Things are so murky, no wonder Mike prefers to hang out in Vienna rather than in the Valley.) The irony is that Mike, the only person to twice serve as the Intelligence Bureau’s chief, doesn’t even have time for India’s intelligence community.

No wonder, then, that one of our spies tried to kill herself. Nisha Bhatia of the Research and Analysis Wing had complained about a senior officer offering her money for sex (he was probably trying to exploit the fact she is a divorcée with children). At one point, Mike ordered an inquiry into her charges. After all, the accused had a history of complaints against him; he was thrown out of the RAW and sent back to his state cadre. Yet Mike is a busy man, with little time for the grinding wheels of justice; Nisha lost confidence in the panel and was “erratic” in her evidence, and she took the extreme step. The RAW’s response was to sack her. It has been a near-tragedy that Mike has no time for.

Things have been no better at the strategic intelligence agency itself, where the current chief, Ashok Chaturvedi, is a universally proclaimed dimwit. A couple of years ago, he was superseded by some good officers because he was seen as a potential liability. When Mike became NSA, he wanted to clean up the spy agency. He brought in a new chief, P K Hormese Tharakan, over the heads of long-serving, competent officers, one of whom took early retirement. Tharakan served out his term, the RAW remained as useless as ever, and then Mike played his master-stroke: he elevated Chaturvedi to the top job. This inexplicable move would not be so bad if, for the past four months, word had not spread that one of the IB’s best officers,Kashmir-specialist N Sandhu, was going to be the new RAW chief; not only has it not come to pass, but it has left the RAW, the IB, and even Sandhu, completely irritated.

One could argue that these are merely administrative matters, and that the real issue is Kashmir. It has been over four years since the UPA took power, and what has Mike done vis-à-vis Kashmir? For comparison, just look at the bad news, anti-Muslim BJP: as prime minister, A B Vajpayee made several gestures towards a political settlement, including a famous handshake offer in Srinagar to Pakistan; even his deputy L K Advani had two back-slappingly cordial meetings with the moderate wing of the separatist All Parties Hurriyat Conference.

In addition, the Americans had leaned heavily on Musharraf to seal a deal with India on Kashmir. Musharraf was the first Pakistani head of government to openly state that borders could not be redrawn; Musharraf repeatedly called for “out-of-the-box” solutions; Musharraf privately leaned on the Hurriyat to seal a deal with India; and even Omar Abdullah, chief of the eternally mainstream National Conference, had a one-onone meeting with Musharraf during a March 2006 visit to Islamabad, and returned to India convinced that we should do business with “the General.”

The irony is that after Musharraf resigned on Monday, the ever-taciturn Narayanan told a Singapore newspaper: “Whether he is impeached or not is not important from the Indian point of view... that leaves a big vacuum, and we are deeply concerned about this... It greatly worries us…” Perhaps the protests in J&K woke Mike up to the fact that he had just missed a great window of opportunity (open long and wide from 2004 to 2008). The time was obviously spent wringing his hands over the nuclear deal; in the bargain, he neglected to hammer out a Kashmir policy. And now, things have spun so out of control that even Omar speaks of debating azadi instead of discussing autonomy.

Admittedly a Kashmir policy does not get formulated overnight, and though it took the NDA two years to have their own policy, each government’s approach does not vary too much from the others. (The NDA bettered even the USA, which always appears to begin working on the Palestinian problem in the final year of each Presidency.) Mike has not even attempted a Kashmir policy; after all, who has time for all those autonomy reports, expert committees, valuable suggestions and friendly advice? The people can’t be fooled forever, however, and if anger has exploded in both Srinagar and in Jammu over a barren 40 hectares, it’s because the people know they’ve been neglected by rulers who aren’t in the least bothered.

Mike has to thus stay home and pay the price for his neglect. As the nuclear deal nears being clinched, Mike’s buddies like Shivshankar Menon and Anil Kakodkar jetset to the cool climes of Vienna and Washington, while Mike has to douse the fires in Jammu and Srinagar. And poor fellow, he has no clue as to where to begin. This column has a suggestion. Mike, go and seek out the wise, the balanced, the judicious, the magnanimous, and the visionary; and let them run the show

D-Gang under ISI protection, says '93 blasts accused
Ninety three blasts accused Karimullah Khan tells CBI that Dawood Ibrahim, his brother Anees and the prime accused in the '93 blasts case, Tiger Memon are in Pakistan and are being protected by the ISI.

Karimullah Sheikh, who was once an absconder for the deadly 1993 serial bombings is in CBI's custody.

Former personal assistant to Dawood's younger brother Anees Ibrahim, Karimullah confirmed what the Mumbai police has been claiming all along that Dawood not only resides in Karachi, but also enjoys the protection of the ISI

“Some intelligence agency is providing for his security, said Karimullah,” says Additional Commissioner of Police, Deven Bharati.

He told the investigators, that Dawood and his brothers have heavily invested in Pakistan’s real estate businesses and share market, besides providing refuge to a number of 1993 blast absconders in Karachi.

He also revealed to the Mumbai crime sleuths that, Dawood and his brothers stay together in near by bungalows in Karachi's plush Clifton area, while the second rung of the D-gang has set up base in the adjoining Defence colony.

While Dawood rarely leaves his residence, his brother Anees handles the fake currency, and drug cartels apart from real estates and share market investments. A number of Pakistani diplomats and ISI officers regularly meet Dawood.

Tiger Memon is also in Karachi and has grown to become an established builder in Pakistan and Dubai.

Karimullah also claims that he returned to India as he was being sidelined in the gang and was not paid his dues.

While his confession will help Mumbai Police's case against Dawood, these revelations are sure to affect the D company to some degree.

Terrorist reveals Pak's India plot
That Pakistan trains terrorists and sends them across the border to Jammu and Kashmir is not news to India and the Indian intelligence agencies.

Now a militant owing allegiance to the Harkat-ul-Mujaihdeen has not just confessed to this but has also spoken about the Kashmir focus of Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI.

The confession of Mohammed Hashim alias Tarbish who reportedly infilitrated into India from Balochistan in Pakistan is available on tape to CNN IBN.

Hashim was arrested by the Indian army while attempting to cross over into Kashmir last month. During his five hour long interrogation, the militant revealed explosive designs of Pakistan.

Question: Do you get trained to infiltrate only into Kashmir or other palces in India as well?

Answer: We must go to Kashmir is what we are told by them. The focus is Kashmir. Even if we say we want to go to to Afghanistan, they say go to Kashmir, we need more people there.

On Pakistan's intelligence ISI

Answer: The agency helps the tanzeemm a lit but not in front of everyone.

On trainees in terror camps

Answer: There are Arabs, Bangaladeshis, Pathans and Punjabis. People who speak all languages.

On the routes being taken to infiltrate

Answer: They are coming from Tutniyal side. Different routes are operated upon so if one gets caught others can carry out the mission

At the end of the interrogation, Hashim also shows how to assemble a bomb. His confession makes Pakistan's sinister designs in Kashmir obvious.

Terror e-mail threatens new round of attacks
'Indian Mujahideen', which has been identified as the jehadi group behind a spate of terror attacks, on Saturday rushed to the defence of the accused in the Ahmedabad blasts case, while warning of fresh, scaled-up attacks.

Besides vowing to retaliate against their usual targets — police and intelligence officials — the mail, citing Quranic verses and spewing venom against 'non-believers', widened the arc of their attack to include The Times of India. This was the second time that the Mujahideen has included the daily among its targets.

In a significant escalation, the warning was also directed against members of the 'conscious' public.

The warning of 'deadliest' attacks, that came to TV channels, has photographs of cars claimed to have been used in the attacks on two hospitals in Ahmedabad on July 26 when terrorists set off a series of explosions killing over 60 and injuring many more.

Captioned 'Mood for Destruction' and beginning "Run from us if you can!", the latest hate mail drops hints that the next targets would be in Gujarat and Maharashtra — reinforcing the belief that the gang has a big network in the two states.

The 'Indian Mujahideen' on Saturday sent a hate mail to TV channels with photographs of cars claimed to have been used in the attacks on two hospitals in Ahmedabad. If the use of photographs of cars used in the Ahmedabad attack attested to the veracity of the email from Indian Mujahideen which has so far warned of 5 terror attacks before they actually happened, the contents of the letter were being seen by cops as crafted to create support for the Mujahideen, scare among others, and, most crucially, an alibi for those accused in connection with the Ahmedabad blasts in particular and SIMI, in general.

'Not a single mujahid arrested'

"The Indian Mujahideen on its full authority declares that by the Grace of Allah not even a single mujahid from our ranks who played even a minute role in the blasts, have been arrested to date. We are completely safe". The IM seeks to rubbish the breakthrough achieved by Gujarat cops with help from Mumbai police and IB as bogus, just meant to calm the nerves of the populace, and cover the 'miserable failure' of cops. Written in angry tone, the email is, however, littered with giveaways. First, they mention only 3 of the 10 — Mufti Abul Bashar, Sajid Mansuri and Zahid Shaikh in that order — of the 10 odd accused in the Ahmedabad blasts case, thus possibly delineating the pecking order among the alleged conspirators.

This ties in with the assessment of Gujarat police and intelligence agencies that Bashar, the Deobandi preacher from Azamgarh, masterminded the July 26 attack. In fact, the email goes to considerable length to argue that the' mastermind' is not just still at large, but has already mastermined one more 'line of attack'.

In any case, coming from an outfit which has repeatedly carried out its warnings of terror attack, the certificate of innocence for the accused and the SIMI iss not going to amuse the cops and the investigators.

Its vigorous defence of SIMI takes on significance also because of the finding of Gujarat police and intelligence agencies that IM is just the re-badged version of the extremist faction of the banned fundamentalist outfit.

The objective to blur the alleged role of Bashar and others is also brought out by the grateful reference to Ken Haywood, the US national whose computer IM used to send the email warning of the Ahmedbad blasts. "Our heartfelt gratitude to Mr Ken Haywood and his associate for their complete cooperation and guidance to make our attack a huge success", the email emphasized.

Intelligence sources suspect that crediting a non-believer, that too a US citizen who was allegedly engaged in prosleytizing, could be meant to distract the attention from the real authors of the July 26 email sent from Haywood's Navi Mumbai apartment.

It is significant that while Heywood, anxious to avoid a narco test, suddenly left the country after dodging the look out notice for him, Mumbai police had given him a clean chit.

Evalegical- Maoist alliance kills 5 VHP Activists in Kandhamal Orissa.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Indi ... 397590.cms
BHUBANESWAR: At least five persons, including four prominent VHP leaders, were on Saturday night shot dead by unidentified gunmen, suspected to be Maoists, at an ashram for girls when Janmashtami celebrations were on in Orissa's communally-sensitive Kandhmal district. ( Watch )

About 30 armed men struck at the ashram in Jalespata under Tumudibandh block, 127 km from Kandhamal's district headquarter town of Phulbani at around 2115 hours and sprayed bullets, leaving VHP leader Laxmanananda Saraswati and four others dead, a senior police officer said.

The dead in the attack in the district also included VHP's Laxmananda Saraswati, Arupananda, Chinmayananda and Mata Bhaktimayee and an unidentified person, he said.

Tension broke out at some places in the tribal-dominated Kandhmal after the attack on the ashram and roads leading to Tumudibandh were sealed, police said adding steps were taken to prevent any communal flare-up in the district which witnessed violence during the Christmas in December last year.

Additional security forces, including CRPF, were deployed in the area.

"Besides tightening security in Kandhmal, we have sought additional para-military forces from the Centre. The Centre was also requested to extend the stay of seven CRPF companies in the district," Home Secretary T K Mishra said.

Another Botch-up:
Link
AHMEDABAD: Lack of co-ordination between the Surat and Ahmedabad police may have allowed a key suspect in the Surat bombing plan to escape. Tanvir Pathan, 30, a close associate of Sajid Mansuri, the prime strategist in the serial blasts in Ahmedabad, slipped away just when a police team from Ahmedabad was closing in on him.

The Ahmedabad crime branch had specific information about Tanvir, a native of Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh now settled in Surat, having played a vital role in the planting of 29 bombs which were found in Surat just after the Ahmedabad blasts on July 26. Yet, quite surprisingly, it did not share this information with the Surat police. Instead, it sent a team headed by two inspectors to his house in River View Society at Palia Ground in Surat.

But since they did not know what he looked like, he escaped as soon as he spotted the police vehicle in the neighbourhood of his house, trying to make inquiries about where he stayed.

Tanvir’s arrest could have been a big breakthrough in the investigation into the Surat case as Tanvir, who used to repair air-conditioners for a living, is learnt to have used four more people for planting the bombs, which were found strewn around Varachha and adjoining areas. While the plan for serial blasts in Surat bore resemblance to Ahmedabad, faulty integrated circuits prevented them from blowing up the diamond city.

Surat police sources say it would have been better if the Ahmedabad police had taken it into confidence. "We would have made discreet inquiries about Tanvir's location and then swooped down on him," said a senior Surat police officer.

After the fiasco, Surat city police picked up Tanvir's parents, brother and sister-in-law hoping that he would return under pressure. His family was kept under detention for three days, after which they were allowed to go home. When the police went again to their house to pick them up, neighbours told them that a ‘Tavera' vehicle had come soon after they were released by the police and took them away.

Orissa shuts down schools, colleges as protests spread
Sunday August 24 2008 18:54 IST

IANS

http://newindpress.com/NewsItems.asp?ID ... ar&Topic=0&
BHUBANESWAR: Orissa has ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in the state for a day Monday in view of the shutdown call of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to protest the killing of one of its leaders and four others.

“To avoid any untoward incident, the government has ordered the closure of all educational institutions in the state for a day Monday,” an official at Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's office told IANS.

The state government Sunday ordered a judicial probe into the killing of VHP leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four other people, as thousands of protesters blocked roads and stopped trains at several places in the state.

“The state government has ordered a judicial probe into the killings,” said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik after reviewing the situation at a high-level meeting at the state secretariat here.

Saraswati was leading a campaign against cow slaughter and religious conversion allegedly by Christian missionaries. He was shot dead at his Jalespata ashram, some 340 km from here.

"More than 30 men opened fire at the octogenarian leader, killing him and four others," said District Collector Kishan Kumar by phone.

The ashram is located in the communally-sensitive Kandhamal district.

"The attackers overpowered the 10 security personnel and opened fire from their automatic weapons," Kumar said. "We have found a letter from the spot which indicates it may be a Maoist attack."

The attack took place around 7.30 p.m. Saturday.

“The weapons they used, the bullets and a letter recovered from the spot indicate that they may be Maoists rebels,” said Gopal Chandra Nanda, state director general of police. “The attackers have used sophisticated rifles and AK-47,” he said.

The authorities have prohibited the gathering of four or more people in the entire district and security has been beefed up in the area.

The state government has asked the police and district administration heads to remain alert.

"There have been sporadic incidents of road and train blockades in the state," said Inspector General of Police Pradeep Kapoor. A high alert has been sounded across the state, he added.

"Thousands of policemen and paramilitary force troopers have been deployed in the district to avoid any untoward incidents," he said.

Kandhamal district, with a population of around 600,000 including 150,000 Christians, is considered one of the most communally sensitive regions in the state. The region has witnessed numerous clashes between Hindus and Christians in the past.

Saraswati, a member of the central advisory committee of the VHP, served tribes, mainly Kandhs, in the region.

His main ashram is located at Chakapad in the same district. The place where he was killed houses a residential school for girls and another ashram.

Apart from Chief Minister Patnaik, Puri Sankaracharya Nischilananda Saraswati, Bharatiya Janata Party national vice-president Jual Oram, and Bajrang Dal leader Subash Chauhan are among those who have condemned the killings.

Hindu groups Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parisad here announced they would observe a statewide shutdown Monday to protest the killings.

"The state will observe bandh Monday to protest the brutal murders," said Subash Chauhan, all India convenor of Bajrang Dal.

The state government Sunday has sent a high level police team and additional police forces to the district to monitor the situation.

The dead would be cremated in the district Monday.

Five killed in Jammu gunbattle, four hostages rescued
JAMMU, AUGUST 27 (PTI)

Security forces rescued three children and a woman, who were held hostage during a gunbattle in which three civilians, an army officer and a guerrilla were killed Wednesday in this winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

The militants, holed up in a house in Chinore on the outskirts of this city, took six civilians hostage Wednesday morning. The police said they were trying to rescue the two remaining hostages before launching an assault on the guerrillas.

The police said three terrorists had crossed into Jammu and Kashmir from the Kanachak sector of the border with Pakistan Tuesday morning. They were intercepted at the police check post of Chinore Wednesday morning, about 20 km north from the centre of Jammu.

The militants, dressed in police uniforms and carrying AK-47 assault rifles, shot dead a junior commissioned officer and then hijacked a three-wheeler. They then fired indiscriminately killing Shabeet Hussain, a milk man, and motorcyclist Naseeb Singh before killing the three-wheeler driver, Vijay Kumar, said the police.

The guerrillas then entered a house in Chinore. Police and army personnel cordoned off the area and were engaged in a gunbattle with the militants.

Once the remaining hostages were rescued, there would be a "final onslaught", said an army officer, which in military terms means blowing up the building with rocket launchers or explosives.

"This (civilian hostages) is what is holding us up from launching final onslaught. We are ready for that," the army officer on the spot told IANS.

Massive manhunt

Army personnel have taken positions on roof tops of adjoining houses in densely populated Chinore, located on a hillock.

Grenade explosions and gun shots were heard in the area as the one-storey building where the militants were hiding was perforated with bullet marks.

"A high alert has been sounded in Jammu due to the terrorist infiltration from across the border," said Inspector General of Police (Jammu Zone) K Rajendra.

The Border Security Force (BSF), along with police and army personnel, had launched a massive manhunt for the militants, who had entered the Indian territory at Kanachak, about 20 km north of here, after cutting the barbed wire fence Tuesday.

"This is a serious situation. The intruders sneaked into the Indian side under the cover of fire, which was most probably provided by the Pakistani Rangers," a BSF official said.

Rally cancelled

This is the second major gun battle in Jammu region in less than three and a half months.

Six people were killed in Samba town, 40 km south west of Jammu May 11. According to defence sources, militants had infiltrated May 8 from across the international border in Samba sector before they surfaced May 11 morning and killed civilians and soldiers. Three militants were killed in that battle.

Meanwhile, the group spearheading the agitation in Jammu for the re-transfer of land to Amarnath shrine board on Wednesday postponed its public rally in the wake of the situation prevailing due to the killing of three people by militants.

"The rally has been cancelled based on the request of the authorities in view of infiltration of militants and their attacks on outskirts of the city in which some people were killed," Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti leader Naresh Padha said in Jammu.

The samiti had planned to hold a public rally at Parade Grounds in Jammu on Wednesday.

at present juncture they are a bigger threat to india than bakpak because they
smile and live among us, eating away like termites from within and moving to the
next piece of wood.
Awesomely articulated.

They've also successfully managed to hijack Nepal.

I wouldn't be too surprised if Nepal down the line becomes a prime unkilian base of ops.

The red corridor from nepal to the peninsular coast has been operational for a long time now.

Gujrat put an end to EJ nonsense in the ST dominated Dangs distt by aggressive police action against EJ agencies and fronts, stubbornly ignoring 'NGO' scorn and world criticism, backed by a huge popular madate and legislative supermajority. Modi's US visa gets pulled but small loss, I surmise.

A similar vein of action in Jharkhand got nipped too early in the bud. In orissa it never really took off. But with the Maoists drawing blood, things may have finally started to change. Whether for the better or the worse, remains to be seen.

While at it does anyone think that the EJs feel that they are losing the initiative and hence resorted to the killing of the swamiji by the Naxals?

EJs have been trying to subvert Oriya populace and religious belief for a very long time now. I have had both first- and second-hand exposure to their machinations. There was definitely an anger towards the Swamiji in the EJ circle for the good work he had been doing and the respect and command he enjoyed in the area. Some of the retired govt officials (converts, who still hide their religion to benefit from the SC quota) are hand in glove with the maoists and are suspected to be the masterminds, they were amply helped by the incompetent local law & order officials.

There is a huge latent unrest in Orissa and a Jammu-type uprising or response can not be ruled out. The Eastern corridor (AP to WB and beyond to NE) certainly needs one to push back and recover lost ground for Hindus. JMTs of course.

I visited Orissa as a kid with family in mid 1980s in Bhubneshwar and Paradeep
There has been a setback to EJs activites in the last 4 years since reconversion has started being effective.
The old model of money and business plan of paying money to cell planters is not successful. So there is anger at rollback.
Illiterate are no more illiterate. I talked to a driver and he explained to me the entire process. He said the novelty of Christianity is going down now.

Kandhamal in Orissa is burning, after the murder of Swami Lakshmananda Saraswati, and elderly campaigner against forced evangelistic conversions.

In this light people may recall that Kandhamal had some riots some months ago. At that time here is an SMS that was mistakenly sent to me:

Eastern Orthodox xtianity is on sound footing
In russia it is supported by russian nationalism

In India, the syrian xtians have a deep rooted self sufficient tradition

It is the western churches that are in crisis
The catholic church is dying, no white man or woman wants to be a priest
They have to import mexican priest

All said and done, western xtianity is white xtianity
In 30 years, whites will be a minority in US
In 30 years, muslim civil wars will begin in Europe

All this means is that Western churches in India, that are primarily run on western funding are in danger of being cut off from funds

Add to it, the growth in the Indian economy relative to the west, has halved the effect of missionary dollars over the last 15 years and will halve again in another 15 years

Then consider the VHP ekal vidyalaya scheme, ekal.org
very active in India and has covered 27000 villages, for $350 per year
This provides the basic services that previously missionaries used to do

So the Indian window is closing rapidly

The security is threatened by the "outsiders".
Each year the Indian government's Ministry of Home Affairs issues the report "Receipt of Foreign Contributions by Voluntary Associations." With just 58% of the 32,000 registered associations reporting for 2005-2006, the total contributions were $2billion. None of the top fifteen donor agencies are Christian, six are secular and none is Hindu.

The amounts reported by these nine organizations and their countries of origin are: Gospel Fellowship Trust, India (USA), $60 million; Gospel for Asia (USA), $36 million; Fundacion Vicent Ferrer (Alicante, Spain), $27 million; Christian Aid (UK), $21 million; Miseror Mozartstrasse (Germany), $20 million; Fundacion Vicente Ferrer (Madrid, Spain), $20 million; Manos Unidas (Spain) $13 million; Missio Germany (Germany), $13 million. That totals $226 million in aid from Christian organizations.
One example of how the Chrisitian use their funds comes from their funds comes from the The Gospel for Asia mission statement for India: "Plant another 300 Baptist Churches, start 10 Chrisitian schools and establish 3 Bible colleges within the next 10 years." They claim to have already planted 156 Grace Baptist churches and converted 20,000 people.

Actually in the overall scheme of things it is not too much
For example, just as Mittal took on the challenge of funding the olympics Indian team,
if one of the hyper-religious Ambani women, or other billionaires take on the challenge of
funding hindu charities, this can be solved

For example the grass root VHP, ekal vidyalaya which aims to provide services to neutralise the missionaries, it costs $350 per year to immunise 1 village against EJs
The goal is 100,000 villages, which works out to $35 million a year
Peanuts for the newly rich in india

There is a patel guy in new jersey who funds 365 ekals , 1 per day = $130k per year

Hindus who dont donate to hindu charities have no right to bitch and moan

Heck, for the NRIs in the US, who contribute to United way, there is a form called donor option write-in, wherein the money can be diverted to a hindu charity

While condemning the violence in Orrisa on all sides,I personally feel that a call for a "bandh" of Catholic schools is counter-productive.Rather than close for the day in protest, they should work an extra day on Saturday-"we work harder for the nation", as a novel form of highlighting the plight of innocents affected in Orissa! Every day lost in school or at work is a loss to the country. The SC has rebuffed Keralaites about "bandhs".Why shouldn't schools be similarly warned? After all, won't we develop the same such cretinous behaviour in young children, who later on in life will resort to similar action?

While investigations are on,a serious impartial investigation is essential to see if foreign meddling/funding of some religious groups were part of the problem. The CIA has for ages used so-called missionaries as agents and even women as "Mata Haris" to destabilise/entrap locals. The curent govt. is singularly weak on security issues and the enemies of India and actions of so-called friends are playing havoc with the nation's security.Above all,our politicos should also not play the communal card durign crises like this which will only prove counter-productive and affect them when they are in power.

Here's a fine tale of the N.Korean equiv. of Mata Hari.

Model defector Won Jeong Hwa faces trial over spying for North Korea
Won Jeong Hwa fled North Korea after theft conviction
Richard Lloyd Parry, Asia Editor

She arrived as a refugee, one of tens of thousands to flee the world’s most oppressive regime and, for seven years, Won Jeong Hwa was a model defector. She toured South Korean military bases to lecture on the evils of the homeland that she had escaped, the totalitarian Communist state of North Korea.

Ms Won had a secret however. According to a confession made to South Korean police, she was a spy who seduced the military officers she met, and plotted assassinations with poisoned needles. Now she faces execution for treason in a case reminiscent of the most tense days of the Cold War.

Prosecutors in the city of Suwon described how Ms Won allegedly slipped through security checks carried out on all would-be defectors, raising questions about how many more spies might have entered South Korea.

“We merely suspected that there might be spies mixed in with North Korean defectors during the reconciliatory mood of the past ten years, and had no evidence,” Kim Kyeong Su, the senior prosecutor, said. “The suspicions have turned into reality.”

The true story of a passionate Korean 'spy'
North Korea warn of nuclear strike on neighbour
South Koreans kicked out by the North

According to Mr Kim, Ms Won, 35, was a convicted thief who feared execution in North Korea after being caught stealing several tonnes of zinc. She fled to China, a common place of transit for North Koreans seeking to escape oppression, personal trouble and economic hardship at home — but she eventually returned to the North to become a spy in 1998.

Her first assignment was to identify and send back home — to certain imprisonment or death – fellow countrymen in China who were trying to defect to the South. She arrived in South Korea in 2001 and, after the lengthy debriefing to which Seoul submits all defectors, she was given the job of delivering anticommunist lectures at military bases.

She used these occasions to befriend and seduce military officers in an attempt to extract classified information from them.

According to the prosecution only one complied — Captain Hwang, 26, who has also been arrested. She is alleged to have passed back to the North information about the location of military installations, lists of North Korean defectors and personal data about South Korean military officers.

“She used sex as a tool for her spy activity,” a statement by the Suwon prosecutors’ office said.

Ms Won travelled regularly to China to liaise with her spymasters, who provided her with equipment worth $60,000 (£32,000), including poisoned needles with which to assassinate intelligence agents from South Korea — although this plan was never put into effect.

Ms Won was arrested finally in July along with her foster father, a 63-year-old named only as Mr Kim, who was suspected of abetting her espionage.

According to Yonhap, the South Korean news agency, the inquiry is likely to expand to examine other North Korean defectors. No trial date has been set for Ms Won who, if convicted, faces a sentence ranging from seven years in prison to execution.

Some good news finally on combating the Naxals.
Anti-Naxal force of CRPF gets Govt clearance

New Delhi, Aug 27: The Government tonight cleared a proposal of an exclusive anti-Naxal force of 10 battalions (10,000 personnel) at a cost of Rs 1389.47 crore to fight the growing menace of the ultra-Left forces.

After debating on the proposal for nearly eight months, the Union Home Ministry finally moved the Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for raising the Combat battalion for Resolute Action (COBRA) which will be similar to 'Greyhounds' of Andhra Pradesh Police.

The Left-extremism, termed by the Prime Minister as a "virus", has engulfed nearly 13 states.

Under the proposal, Rs 898.12 crore will be spent on land and infrastructure while an expenditure of Rs 491.35 crore will be made on manpower training over a period of three years.

The CRPF, which is designated as the central force for countering anti-insurgency, has started work for the creation of such a force after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had asked for the same in December and also submitted a proposal to the Union Home Ministry a few months ago.

Under the proposal, until the training of 10 battalions, the CRPF would deploy an equal number of personnel to begin operations from the day it was sanctioned, the sources said.

K Durga Prasad, a 1981 batch IPS officer from Andhra Pradesh, was posted by the CRPF to take charge of the new SAF force for his knowledge and expertise in handling the anti-left wing operations.

The SAF is likely to be headquartered in the national capital with battalion headquarter in every naxal-affected state.

Jaipur blasts: Muslim groups sceptical over arrests

Mohammed Iqbal

JAIPUR: Muslim groups in Rajasthan on Wednesday expressed scepticism over the claim of the State police of having cracked the May 13 Jaipur serial blasts case. They said the investigation followed a “predetermined pattern” and failed to win the people’s confidence.

The Rajasthan Muslim Forum — an apex body of Muslim groups — said the arrestsof prime suspect Shahbaz Hussain from Lucknow and seven alleged conspirators from Kota were based on the confessions made by those held in neighbouring Gujarat. The arrests would fail to stand judicial scrutiny during the trial, it said.

Muslim Forum convener Qari Moinuddin said Director-General of Police K.S. Bains admitted that the police were yet to build a prima facie evidence against the accused. “In this scenario, it is preposterous for the State police to make tall claims of having unearthed the roots of the conspiracy. The case against all the suspects is very week.”

Mr. Moinuddin said there was resentment in Lucknow against Shahbaz’s arrest — as evident by a demonstration held in the city on Wednesday — and the Special Investigation Team had no solid material, except the arrest warrant, to justify his detention.

Similarly, the case against the seven accused belonging to Kota — who were already in the SIT’s detention for several days — was slapped merely on the basis of their acquaintance with Sajid Mansuri who, the Gujarat police say, masterminded the Ahmedabad and Jaipur blasts. “Merely knowing a person does not make anyone a criminal. None of them had any role in carrying out the blasts,” said Mr. Moinuddin.

The accused include an elderly physician, Ishaq Qureshi, and his son, Taufeeq, who is a Unani medicine student in Jaipur. The Muslim Forum felt that targeting professionals like them was a ploy of the police to give credence to its speculation of educated Muslims joining the terror net.

Jamat-e-Islami Hind State president and the Forum’s member Mohammed Salim alleged the police had cooked up the cases to contain the growing resentment against indiscriminate arrests and illegal detention of Muslim youths. “On the pretext of investigation, Muslims were harassed and their constitutional rights were violated by their prolonged detention and torture in custody.”

Mr. Salim said that while the medical students released after detention were finding it difficult to continue their studies, electronics engineer Rashid Hussain and government physician Amanullah Jamali had lost their jobs.

Civil rights groups will stage a demonstration opposite the Collectorate here on Thursday in protest against the harassment of innocent people during investigations. Mr. Salim said the Muslim youths were summoned to police stations, detained beyond 24 hours and their families were not informed about their whereabouts.

“The powerful blast in Kanpur on Sunday, in which two Bajrang Dal activists were killed while making bombs, is a clear testimony to the fact that communal forces are involved in the acts of terror in the country. It is strange that the police are not yet ready to look beyond the prism of SIMI [Students Islamic Movement of India],” said Mr. Salim.

Abdul Latif of the All-India Milli Council said that while empirical pieces of evidence had emerged showing clearly the role of the Bajrang Dal and other Hindutva outfits in the incidents at Malegaon, Nanded, Thane and Kanpur, the State DGP had made a “ridiculous claim” of SIMI organising training camps in the Kota region.

The Muslim Forum also denounced a decision of the Rajasthan High Court Bar Association not to represent any accused in the blasts case in the court and described it as a breach of professional ethics of lawyers.

Naxals go hi-tech with Thuraya
NEW DELHI: After Ulfa and the militants in Kashmir, now naxalites are using Thuraya satellite phones.

The matter came to light after the research and analysis wing (Raw), India’s external intelligence agency, intercepted communication between naxals in different parts of the country.

Terrorists in Kashmir and the Northeast using Thuraya phones for strategic communication is a known fact, but naxals taking to the technology is new.

Raw also found that the location of these satellite phones changes constantly within a particular area of operation as the facility is mostly used by top naxal commanders who keep changing their hideouts for fear of being caught.

Thuraya is a UAE-based firm that provides satellite telephony in most parts of the world. Indian intelligence agencies have traditionally found it very tough to intercept satellite phones, making them the choice of militants in Kashmir. In recent times, however, the agencies, including Raw, have acquired the technology to track them.

Whatever success the agencies have had against Thuraya has been after 2007, when Raw acquired the system to intercept the phones and immediately found out that over 100 such phones were active in India, mostly in Kashmir and other border areas. Then, the second major concentration of satellite phones was in the border areas of the Northeast, where they were being extensively used by Ulfa.

Refusing to divulge the exact number of satellite phones in the possession of naxals, a senior government official privy to the interceptions said, “The presence of satellite phones shows that naxals are increasing becoming technologically equipped.”

Naxalites active in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Orissa, Maharashtra and Karnataka getting access to satellite telephony has set alarm bells ringing among intelligence agencies.

The relief is the phones being used in India are old models and the agencies are working overtime to trace their origins.

Raw has also found that satellite phones are being increasingly used around the line of control in Kashmir and also in northeastern states.
Threat to Hindus in Valley: RAW

New Delhi, August 27 The Centre is deeply worried about the security of the Hindu community in the Valley after intelligence reports of militant outfits planning to target them to create communal unrest.

Based on these reports, National Security Advisor M K Narayanan met members of the Hindu Welfare Society during his recent visit to Srinagar and asked the state to intensify security in areas inhabited by the Hindus. The matter was also discussed in a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security, which met on Wednesday to take stock of the situation in the state.

The concern grew after a detailed report from the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) was submitted to the PMO recently. The report, based largely on communication intercepts, stated that Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar, one of the terrorists released after the IC-814 hijack and now heading an outfit called Al Umar Mujahideen, has issued instructions to target Hindus in the Valley, government buildings and public property.

Similarly, the agency has shared specific inputs about the Hizbul Mujahideen leadership issuing instructions to target Hindus in Kishtwar. The RAW has conveyed that the Sikh community too may be under threat from Hizbul cadres. It has also received information that Lashkar-e-Toiba has strengthened its presence outside the Valley in Rajouri and has apparently carried out reconnaissance operations to attack local Hindu religious sites. While law-enforcement authorities are corroborating this information on the ground, the Centre has made it clear that there should be no let-up in increasing security for minority groups.

While the Centre has decided to come down hard on extremist elements in the Valley, there is also a view here that the government must act with equal resolve when it comes to Hindu extremist elements in Jammu so that there is little chance of a communal fallout in the state.

Orissa Report

This blog is coming to you from Visakhapatnam, India where I am spending the night after completing a fabulous conference in Semiliguda, Orissa. Tomorrow I will travel to New Delhi and be there for a few days before returning home. P.G. Vargis, the founder of Indian Evangelical Team (IET), asked me not to say anything publicly about the location of the meetings in Orissa until they were completed. Having just completed the conference, I am free to talk about them now.

The Orissa Peace Festival in Semiliguda, India was a huge success, surpassing everyone's expectations. The state of Orissa has been the site of violent persecution of Christians and Semiliguda has seen several Christian workers and missionaries killed in recent months and years, including the much publicized martyrdom of the Australian missionary and his two sons. Yesterday I had breakfast with a group of pastors who were beaten last month for preaching the gospel in Orissa.

Choosing Orissa for the site of a major Christian leadership conference was a daring step of faith, but P.G. and I felt it was time for a breakthrough in Orissa, and as the site of several martyrdoms, Semiliguda was a spiritually significant location to hold the conference. Initially we had planned to accommodate a thousand pastors and leaders for this five day conference, but when several thousand more expressed a desire to attend, the plans were altered to make the conference grounds a kind tent city with the attendees sleeping, eating and living at the site. In the end we accommodated around 3,500 on the grounds and put 500 in nearby hotels.

Although this was a leadership conference and not a meeting open to the public, some of the people from the town of Semiliguda came to the conference grounds on the edge of town at night out of curiosity. On Friday night the police told us there were 7,000 people present and Saturday night we had more than 8,000 people!

Beginning the first day the police set up their own tent on the grounds and stationed 70 policemen at the site. None of the IET leaders regarded this as a good thing. The police in Orissa are usually active participants in the persecution of Christians. But P.G. had an idea from the Lord and invited the police chief to a special ceremony where he was honored with a garland. At the ceremony the police chief said, "People think I am anti-Christian, but I'm not. I was educated in a Christian school." He then gave his officers a strict order to allow the meetings to go on without harassment.

Nevertheless, things remained tense and P.G. and the senior IET leaders kept a wary eye on the crowd and the police. I was never allowed to sit on the platform and was never introduced as a preacher. P.G. would say that he and his wife, Lilly, and his daughter, Grace, were the preachers. They would get up, speak for five minutes, and then P.G. would say he had a friend he wanted to introduce and bring a "greeting." P.G. would introduce me as a friend bringing a greeting, and then as he handed me the microphone, he would whisper, "Preach for an hour and a half." We did this twice a day and every evening. So three times a day I would bring a 90 minute "greeting." I was told the police were wondering, "Who is this greeting man?"

Because several thousand local people were coming at night, the evening meetings took on the tone of an evangelistic event. The last three nights I preached strong evangelistic messages, and then would turn it over to P.G. who would lead the crowd in a sinner's prayer.

Even the name of the conference -- Orissa Peace Festival -- was a deliberate euphemism so as not to evoke hostility. One morning I woke up at 5:00 and the Lord gave me an evangelistic message I called, "Ten Things the Bible Says about Peace." I believe it was very effective. In the daytime sessions I primarily taught on faith.

Today as we made the five hour drive from Semiliguda to Visakhapatnam, P.G. told me he thought these were the most powerful meetings he's ever been in. I can't tell you how happy that made me!

Thank you for praying for me and the conference and a special thank you to the Joseph Company for underwriting this awesome event. Only heaven will reveal all that has been accomplished this week.

I'm tired, but happy.

As I was checking into the hotel here in Visakhapatnam, the bellman said to me (and I quote), "Sir, you need to rest now. You look wery tired."

I think I'll go for a walk on the beach, and then get something to eat.

I'll tell you more later.

Thank you, Jesus, for a great victory in Orissa!

thanks folks.. something concrete we can do...
Agree with the highlighted piece. I was struck by how much money is given by ordinary people. It looks like ~5% of Americans make it a habit of giving 10% of their income to this sort of activity.

Has this ever happened before -- Vatican and Italian govt. both issuing statements like this. In fact Italy is calling Indian ambassador to lodge protest/complaint ?

Clamp down on religious violence, Italy to India
A day after the Vatican condemned the violence against Christians in Orissa, Italy on Thursday said it has decided to summon the Indian ambassador in Rome to stress the need for "decisive action" to prevent and crack down on religious violence in India.

The message to be delivered to India's envoy is "the strong expectation of the government for decisive, preventative and repressive action on the part of Indian authorities" against acts of "unacceptable violence," said a statement issued following a cabinet meeting.

On Wednesday, Pope Benedict XVI "firmly condemned" the violence in Orissa and called upon religious and civil authorities "to work together to restore peaceful co-existence and harmony between the different religious communities."

"While firmly condemning the attacks on human lives, whose sacred character must be respected by all, I extend my spiritual comfort and solidarity to the monks and nuns who have been put through such a difficult test," he had said.

I have a quick take on the violence in Orissa ,the views of a friend who has studied the same.Tribals, conversions, religious groups, violence ,etc.Perhaps this will clarify the situ and shed some light onto the problem.

The current reason for the Vatican's concern is that Catholics have been systematically and specifically targeted by one section of extremists,in a calculated manner. This group wants to eliminate the good work being done amongst the tribals by "Catholic" missionaries. These are, let us call them "orthodox" missionaries, whose aim is the upliftment and emancipation of illiterates and the poor, mostly tribals. The "orthodox" (Catholics)are not of the "evangelical" (American neo-Protestant)type.To give you an idea of how the Evangelical types function,or at least some of them (this is a first person account),one individual in another part of the country was offered upto "8 lakhs" if his family of four converted! This type has a different "mission",funding from Uncle Sam.A goodly part of the funding from the US is allegedly kept by the "pastor/farmer" ,who looks for a good "harvest" of souls to be converted. The more he converts, the more money he gets and everyone stays happy. The convert-who's got money in his pocket, the "pastor/farmer",who is being rewarded on earth for his pains by his master and the "master",the foreign provider of funds, whose grand scheme and operation is being executed according to plan.

Now,you may ask what has this all got to do with the tribals in Orissa and tribal conversions? well, the tribals are sitting on "tribal land" and formerly, when they needed money they asked for small amounts, pledging their valuable land as security. With literacy comes understanding of one's rights ,the true value of their land and naturally they now know how much their land is worth and are fighting for their rights! The extremist goons, who are stormtroopers for a motley gang of land grabbers are trying to prevent this emncipation of the illiterate and underprivileged. We are seeing at Singur the extent to what this can lead to.Sheer greed and the desire to grab tribal land is taking place all over the country, being committed by all shades and colours of the Indian spectrum .In some places and cases, religion and Marx has got mixed up with it,educating or supporting tribal rights, leading to conflict.
