I also understand situation is different for moon, but my point was..
Moon also has "oblateness" (though less than earth) and day period (whether it is 24 ours of 27 days) is really not relevant as you sun's motion is almost the same (as for earth) (1 deg/day) - or you need precession period of 1 year, and I see no reason why one can't achieve that if I am allowed to choose my own inclination of the orbit and some similar things..

Of course, most likely, perturbations due to nearby earth would contribute more to precession ..

Of course, I don't know why one would even want a sun-syn. orbit on moon (day on the moon is very long already etc...) but.. too many references to sun-syn here made me curious...

5000 years ago, the early Indians had written in one of the prinicpal “trysts”, the Rig Veda that “O Moon! We should be able to know you through our intellect. You enlighten us through the right path.” Today, Chandrayaan has set out on this right path.

MUMBAI: The Indian tricolour marked its presence on the moon on Friday night after having flown 3,86,000km from the earth. The timing of this
proud moment had been specially designed to coincide with Children's Day.

The United States, the former Soviet Union and the European Space Agency comprising 17 countries already have their flags on the moon.

The Indian tricolour is painted on all sides of the 29-kg Moon Impact Probe which is attached to the main orbiting spacecraft, Chandrayaan-1, which was launched on October 22.

The inclusion of the MIP as part of the Chandrayaan mission came at the suggestion of former President A P J Abdul Kalam, a former rocket scientist, during the International Lunar Exploration Working Group conference held at Udaipur in November 2004.

The Indian tricolour had been hoisted on Mount Everest and Antarctica. And now it is on the moon.

The flight of the MIP on Friday is a forerunner to the second Indian moon mission, Chandrayaan-2, which will carry a Russian rover and a lander slated for lift-off between 2010 and 2012.

At least now I hope the events up to the landing (crashing?) of the MIP will be made clear. Main uestions in my mind:

Was the MIP completely destroyed upon reaching the Lunar surface?

Did any rocket fire anytime before touchdown to slow down the descent?

Did it continue transmitting after touching the Lunar surface?

All available information has been maddeningly unclear about these things. There's some hints that it would not break up like the following in China's National Magazine Frontline:

When the MIP crashes, the video camera will take pictures of the dust that is kicked up and radio them to the mother-spacecraft, which will relay it to the Indian Space Science Data Centre at Byalalu near Bangalore. The MIP’s images will help decide where Chandrayaan-2’s lander-cum-rover can soft-land on the moon.

ISRO Chairman G. Madhavan Nair said: “The mass spectrometer is basically a particle analyser. The dust coming out on impact will be picked up by it, and if you get a sweep, you will again get a mineral composition on that. But the whole event is very short-lived. You have to keep your fingers crossed till you get the data.”

Please read my post, and many (including some scientists) make mistake here, but the figure has NO "corkscrew" or even "waves" as you pointed out. The orbit at every point is convex. (This is true, of course for earth/moon system , and not any general orbiting body)

Did not mention anything about waves, just the corkscrew orbit.

However, be that as it may, locally, the Moons orbit does seem to corkscrew around the Earths orbit of the Sun. How that orbit looks from the the sun is immaterial. It is a complex orbit locally, and twice year it is occluded during lunar eclipses.

Hence there are 2 observations

a. The orbit is a complex orbit - ie it is not a simple planar orbit - this is what I thought we were discussing.

b. That makes a sun-sync. orbit difficult if not impossible.

This may be ddm reporting but it is possible that MIP has survived and that was the intent, otherwise why fire rockets to slow it down just before a crash?

What I hope to see:

* video from seperation to touchdown (20-30 minutes)
* signals after touchdown
* video and/or photos after touchdown if the camera & transmitter survived

Even a 2-second firing of the retro rockets would translate to a huge braking effect on the moon's surface, probably greater than a 12-second firing on Earth.

Problem with Indian newsreports that are not direct quotes of the authority on the subject (particularly scientific subjects) is that they do not take the trouble to check their facts and probably do not even understand them. It is tragic

. ISRO has not mentioned retro rockets anywhere. There are thrusters for despinning the MIP but everything else is as clear as mud. So I'd take this IBN report with a huge dose of salt.

Indian probe lands on moon

BANGALORE, India (AFP) — An Indian probe landed on the moon on Friday, the Indian Space Research Organisation announced, in a milestone for the country's 45-year-old space programme.

The probe touched down on the moon at 8:34pm (1504 GMT), 25 minutes after it was ejected from an unmanned spacecraft orbitting the moon, a spokesman said.

The probe carrying three instruments and with the Indian flag painted on its outer panes settled in a crater in the moon's south pole, spokesman S. Satish said.

"During its descent from Chandrayaan-1 an onboard video camera transmitted lunar pictures to the ISRO command centre," Satish said in the southern Indian city of Bangalore where the national space agency is headquartered.

Scientists monitoring the probe cheered as ISRO chairman Madhavan Nair announced the success of the country's first lunar mission, which began on October 22 when a rocket transported Chandrayaan-1 into space.

India started its space programme in 1963, developing its own satellites and launch vehicles to reduce dependence on overseas agencies.

ISRO has made us proud. India is the 3rd nation to land a probe on moon!

Why is it a 3rd nation? Of course first are FSU and the United States. ESA is a space agency and not a nation, neither the European Union can currently be called a "nation" - it is a loose confederate of political entities. Japan's Hiten was crash landed on Moon to salvage a failed operation, it did *not* land a probe on moon with a precise stated objective at a chosen location.

And since we have arrived, no need of being namby-pamby about our achievements. We stated we will land MIP on Moon and we did it.

My only wish, they should have taken a snapshot of Chandrayaan on a buffalo cart moving forwards for rocket mating. In fact, my wish is all future antariksh yaatris should have a symbolic buffalo cart ride!

Hats off to ISRO on this great achievement and congratulations all around.
While watching NDTV saw a news scroll mention that the MIP from the CY-1 is the first moon probe to land on a lunar pole. How significant is this? Does it require any higher degree of navigation or precision? I understand it was done to check for any ice/water at the moon's pole.

Congratulations to all Bharatvanshis!!! It has been long journey from buying from Ford Aerospace to landing at Moon on our own . My friend tell me ISRO guys were working without calculators that time .
And guys , lets not forget we are soul, always pure and eternal and believe in reincarnation , not necessary on this Earth or planetry system.We shall exist even after the Creation die.
