Any words from Pawar or the Thackarey folks?

To me it looks like D Company got jehadized. Regular LeT bunnies dont have this much muscle. And that means the ISI's parting shot now that its polticial wings have been trimmed.

Sorry to see the ATS leaders die leading the troops. A very heavy price is being paid.

Silly question maybe but possibly pertinent.

How do we know these gunmen are of the jihadist orientation? Has any police source revealed anything?

Karkare was wearing bullet-proof vests and helmet. So were some of the others involved in the efforts. CNBC India reported 3 bullets were fired at him.

They should put all of UP on alert especially Ayodhya. Its related to the masjid. the old gang that engineered the Mumbai blasts is back with same Modus Operandi. Boats with explosives means the RATS/ISI are involved like last time.

vsudhir, Dont know. Maybe you have a different religious angle?

Cops in BP vests being shot? Were they using coated bullets?

Karkare was the first ATS man on the scene. He took 2 bullets in the chest and 1 in the head.

5th floor of old Taj building on fire. Fire engines cannot approach because of live bomb in the vicinity.

ACP Kamte is said to have been a very good and promising officer. Comes from a distinguished family of cops. Father was the first IGP after Independence. He was 43. Also a classmate of Rajdeep Sardesai, had won bodybuilding championships in college.

The following were targeted:
1) Police officers
2) Affluent people
3) Ordinary citizens

I am following CNBC India. So far it has been just reporting without any major editorial or opinions.

Ramana: The report did not say anything about the type of bullets.

I had decided that I would stop posting on the forum after a run-in with a moderator. But these are extraordinary times and I am hence reversing that decision, at least for the moment.

This is by far the worst terrorist incident in India. This is now war and it requires all of us to come together, irrespective of our views and our political inclinations. This is not a time for political discussions or petty barbs but of putting all the resources of the country behind tackling this emergency situation. We need a coordinated nationwide operation now to root out terror cells, and if Pakistan is involved, this is a call for war.

I just saw Shivraj Patil on television. As insipid as ever. And unwilling to share information - he said that some babu in the Home Ministry would "compile" the information, type it in and give the media a written report by the morning. Pathetic. Somebody needs to take charge at the center. Rumors are flying around and there needs to be a centralized source of information that people can depend on. People across India are tuned in and worried about the situation - the least that they deserve is a flow of credible information. This is the time for leadership. Unfortunately, there is none. It is good to see the Leader of the Opposition reaching out to the PM - this must be reciprocated and the leadership of the primary opposition party, the BJP, must be fully kept on board on immediate operations as well as the aftermath of this incident.

CNN IBN is desperately trying to link Malegaon with this incident - perticularly Karkare, but then again sounding very confused. Sad, sad, sad. it's an attack on India - the sooner these guys realize this, the quicker we can do something about it.

BTW, Google updates are quite worthless. They have 339 stories all of which are like CNN headlines- mostly repeated posts with hardly any new stuff.

Welcome back Sridhar. GJ also has returned. So time for all well meaning people to get back.

Just a collection of my thoughts on this.

Several high level police officers are dead. Most of them were heading critical tasks. Will be hard to replace them on the fly. Seems there was some planning to get their presence and then they were targeted. Also elections in some of the other parts of the country, so security focus was on them - thus easier to get away with such an attacks.

The fact that the elite have been targetted means that action and follow-up this time will b qualitatively different from that in similar cases previously.

Sridhar,

Good to see you back. I agree that despite a difference in political views, all Indians have no choice but to come together. Crisis does bring out the best in us ordinary people. In every crisis, there is opportunity. This is the time to close ranks, unify, strengthen and do what needs to be done.

Economic Times reports some unknown outfit called Deccan Mujahdeen claims repsonsibility.

Must be for the end of Bijapur etc.

All this is hogwash. Its TSP's ISI.

Perhaps to change those that are supposed to lead the effort to get hold of THIS problem and future ones too?

I have a pretty good idea of what is happening in this country. India needs to mount such an effort without fretting about feelings.

IMHO of course.

he army was tonight asked to be on alert to help the civil administration control the situation arising out of the terror attacks in Mumbai, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said. "We have told the army to be on alert. Whenever we require them, we will call them", he told a private television news channel.
