NDTV:
An alert was sounded on Wednesday night across West Bengal, including the eastern metropolis in the wake of terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

Checking at entry points in the metropolis have been intensified and additional forces posted in vulnerable areas as a precautionary measure, city Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborty told a news agency.

He said extra police personnel have been deployed in front of railway stations, big hotels, government offices and vital installations.

"We are keeping watch on the situation in Mumbai and have kept our forces alert here," he said.

Meanwhile, security has also been strengthened at the Sealdah, Howrah and Kolkata stations and Railway police asked to be vigilant in both Eastern and Southeastern Railways.

Times Now saying a total of 4 dead terrorists have been removed from The Oberoi. Why aren't the Marcos at the Taj also??? That place is still in the hands of the police.

Army already outside the Oberoi. Getting ready for the assault to support Naval commandoes. There are reports of 5 blasts in Taj & 1 in Oberoi. Fire brigade is unable to get in and fight fire.

IBN just released a still pic of a terrorist asking for more info from public if any. Also news of about 15 terrorists each in Taj & Oberoi. Seems a very well planned op. Can't be some 2 bit local outfit.

Guys, do not post stuff you know about people still inside the hotels for god's sake. Do not follow the lead of the monkey DDM... Unbelievably poor and senseless reporting...

There could well be, probably is, scanning sites like ours to make the attack as effective as possible... even if it is on other media...

The Indian:
PM condemns Mumbai terror attacks
November 27th, 2008 - 3:35 am ICT by IANS -

Manmohan SinghNew Delhi, Nov 27 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday condemned the serial terrorist attacks in India’s financial capital Mumbai that left at least 17 people dead and over 50 injured.Manmohan Singh assured all cooperation and help to the Maharashtra state government.

Sources in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) told IANS that the army and National Security Guard (NSG) commandos have been dispatched to the city to bring the sense of security back to the metropolis.

“Five columns of the army, NSG as well as navy commandos were rushed to Mumbai immediately after the attacks,” the source said.

The PMO sources said air surveillance has been increased in all over India and vital installations have been put on high alert following the series of what appeared to be planned and synchronised attacks in the heart of Mumbai around midnight Wednesday.

The cabinet scheduled to meet here Thursday will take a review of the situation in Mumbai.

Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil said it was part of “a big conspiracy” against India.

He said 200 commandos were rushed to the city that was reeling under panic and has been a target of terror attacks in recent years.

Patil said five terrorists entered the five-star Taj Mahal Hotel and kept explosives in vehicles there.

He said two terrorists were gunned down and two others were arrested following the attacks.

Their identity, he said, was being there ascertained.

“We are taking all precaution. No judgements at this time,” the home minister said.

“I will reach there as soon as possible,” Patil said.

The Guardian:

Indian security forces turn to question of who carried out Mumbai attacks

With India in the grip of a wave of terrorist attacks that have claimed more than 200 lives already this year, it was only a question of when, rather than if, Mumbai would be hit.

Despite claims by India's security forces to have rounded up many of those involved in the wave of bombings that struck Delhi in September, there appeared to be little national confidence that the killings were at an end.

It was only on Sunday that the Indian prime minister, Manmohan Singh – announcing the formation of a task force to tackle terrorism - warned of the scale of the threat facing the country.

"I only wish to emphasise here that time is not on our side," he said. "We cannot afford a repetition of the kind of terrorist attacks that have recently taken place in Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Surat, Guwahati and some other urban centres."

Although tonight's killings involved gunmen rather than the bombs used in the earlier attacks, the degree of co-ordination involved points to the same hand at work.

The most obvious suspect will be a group calling itself the Indian Mujahideen, an offshoot of the banned SIMI (the Students Islamic Movement).

It claimed responsibility for the bombings in Delhi, Bangalore, Jaipur and Ahmedabad and following the Delhi bombings it issued an explicit threat that Mumbai would be next.

In an email – its favoured method of communication – it accused the ciy's anti-terrorism squad of harassing Muslims.

"You should know that your acts are not at all left unnoticed; rather we are closely keeping an eye on you and just waiting for the proper time to execute your bloodshed," the email warned. "You are already on our hit-list and this time very very seriously."

One name that will be at the forefront of the investigators' minds is that of Abdul Subhan Qureshi, also known as Tauqeer, a Mumbai-educated member of the Indian Mujahideen credited with masterminding several of the previous attacks.

Reports from India's intelligence agencies claim he has been able to use his expertise as a computer engineer to stay one step ahead of his pursuers and to coordinate attacks.

His name also cropped up in the investigation into a series of bombings in Assam, with intelligence agencies claiming to have intercepted several congratulatory emails.

He first came to the attention of the authorities after the 206 train bombings in Mumbai and was suspected of involvement in the Ahmedabad and Delhi attacks.

Figures from India's home ministry show that there have been 64 bomb attacks in the space of six months, killing more than 215 people and injuring 900.

Mumbai itself has been a regular target for terrorists since 1993, with six major attacks since then.

In July 2006 200 people were killed and more than 700 injured in bomb attacks on the city's Western Railway line. Seven bombs exploded within minutes of each other.

In August 2003 46 people died in two explosions and in March 2003 a series of bomb blasts killed 257 people and injured about 700. In that attack the terrorists also targeted hotels, along with the Bombay Stock Exchange, theatres, and a number of other sites.

In the aftermath of the other recent attacks, security sources suggested that both Pakistan and Bangladesh had played a part in assisting the bombers and it seems likely that investigators will again look at possible links with those countries to the latest attacks.

Following the Delhi bombs in September Muslims protested in the national capital, blaming SIMI and demanding that Pakistan abstain from involvement in terrorism in India.

India frequently blames Pakistan for involvement in terrorist activity on its territory, particularly in the contested region of Jammu and Kashmir.

However, the Indian authorities have also acknowledged that the country has its own home-grown terrorist problem.

Maoist Naxalite insurgents have grip on large swathes of the country – one estimate suggests they are active in 55 per cent of the landmass – and are fighting a long-running and bitter war which has claimed thousands of lives.

On Sunday the prime minister described the Naxalites as the "most serious internal security threat" facing India today.

He warned a conference of the country's most senior police officers that "the inability of intelligence agencies and the police to obtain pinpoint and actionable intelligence on time has enabled these outfits to carry out some high-profile attacks."

there were reports around 2-3 months ago of batches of hardcore terrorists landing in mumbai and surveying various landmarks in the city.
however there was no more follow-ups regarding that development.
surely this group is that gang that slipped in small batches into the city and were lodged in safe houses waiting for further orders.

WTF is CNN reporting?

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/1 ... index.html
(CNN) -- Several people have been killed in a series of coordinated attacks targeting Mumbai sites popular with tourists and business people, according to police and CNN's sister network in India.
Ongoing battles between police and gunmen were reported at two five-star hotels.

Gunmen armed with automatic weapons and grenades attacked targets including the hotels, a cafe, and a train station, police say.

Maharashtra state government spokesman Bhushan Gagri said 78 people killed and about 200 wounded, while police confirmed 26 deaths.

Among the dead is the head of the Maharashtra state's anti-terror squad, who apparently died in the violent aftermath of the attacks rather than being a target for the killers.

The attacks included five shootouts and two grenade attacks, said a police officer at Mumbai's police control room.

Mumbai police spokesman Satish Katsa said gunmen have taken over the Taj Mahal Hotel and Hotel Oberoi, and were holding hostages on multiple floors.

Earlier, A.N. Roy, the police chief of Maharashtra state, said his force was still involved with suspected militants at the two five-star hotels.

IBN reported ongoing gun battles at both hotels. At least two explosions were reported at the Taj.

One witness told local reporters gunmen had tried to find people with U.S. or British passports.

IBN, quoting police sources, reported hostages were taken at the two hotels.

The attacks began about 2230 local time (1700 GMT) and more than two hours later witnesses were reporting new explosions and gunfire.

The targets include businesses frequented by international visitors in the city which is India's financial center..................

Sudhir Dalvi, a sub-inspector attached to the Mumbai cell of the Anti-Terrorist Squad, told Sheela Bhatt for Rediff.com that his boss, ATS chief Hemant Karkare, and senior police officers Vijay Salaskar and Additional Commissioner of Police Ashok Kamte, were killed in an incident outside Mumbai's Cama Hospital.

"Our chief Karkare, my senior officer Salaskar and ACP Kamte died while engaging terrorists outside the Cama hospital," a sobbing Dalvi told Rediff.com. "All of a sudden, terrorists threw grenades at Karkare leading to chaos. We are unable to confirm whether they fell to terrorist fire or were killed by the grenades."

DEVELOPING: At least 40 people are reportedly being held hostage in Mumbai, India, by gunmen who targeted luxury hotels, a popular tourist attraction and a crowded train station in at least seven attacks that killed at least 78 in the nation's financial capital, police and witnesses said.

Eyewitnesses said the terrorists appeared to be targeting Americans and the British.

"We were asked if there were any British or Americans," two eyewitnesses told Sky News.

Recent Attacks on Americans or American Interests in India

At least 78 people were killed and 200 injured in the attacks, which began late Wednesday night, according to Johnny Joseph, the chief secretary of the state of Maharashtra, of which Mumbai is the capital.

There were reports of new attacks on one hotel, the Trident, and gunfire at another, the JW Marriott.

Police were battling the gunmen, Maharashtra Police Commissioner A.N Roy said.

"The terrorists have used automatic weapons and in some places grenades have been lobbed," Roy said.

The State Department condemned the attacks and said it couldn't confirm any U.S. casualties.

"Our sympathies go out to the families and friends of those killed and injured, and to the people of Mumbai," said Robert A. Wood, a deputy spokesman at the State Department. "We are monitoring the situation very closely and stand ready to support the Indian authorities as they deal with this horrific series of attacks. At this point, we are unaware of any American casualties."

Some of the gunmen are still holed up in buildings, a police official told Reuters, while NMTV is reporting two of the terrorists are dead.

Several European lawmakers were among those inside the hotel.

Sajjad Karim told Britain's Press Association news agency that he and several other lawmakers were barricaded inside the Taj Mahal Hotel.

"I was in the lobby of the hotel when gunmen came in and people started running," he told the Press Association by phone from the basement of the hotel.

"A gunman just stood there spraying bullets around, right next to me," he said. "I managed to turn away and I ran into the hotel kitchen."

Karim was part of a delegation of European lawmakers visiting Mumbai ahead of an upcoming EU-India summit.

Gunmen opened fire on two of the city's best-known luxury hotels, the Taj Mahal and the Oberoi. They also attacked the crowded Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station in southern Mumbai and Leopold's restaurant, a Mumbai landmark.

"People started running out," an eyewitness said. "The crowd came out of the station: I saw people limping and coming out. I said 'Run.' We ran and I said, finally I said, 'Run' and one person got hit by bullet and fell down and I got hit on the neck and went to the hospital and I just came from there "

It was not immediately clear what the motive was for the attacks.

"It was really scary," said Janice Sequeira, a tourist who had been at a restaurant in the Taj Mahal Hotel. "It was like the sound of loud crackers, not one but several, we just ran out of there."

At the Oberoi, police officer P.I. Patil said shots had been fired inside and the hotel had been cordoned off. He would not give any other details.

The Press Trust of India news agency quoted Mumbai General Railway Police Commissioner A.K. Sharma as saying that several men armed with rifles and grenades were still in the train station.

Leopold's restaurant was riddled with bullet holes and there were blood stains on the floor and shoes left by fleeing customers, according to an Associated Press reporter at the scene.

At least 25 people had been brought to the G.T. Hospital near the shootings, said hospital official Yogesh Pandey.

The Associated Press, Reuters and Sky News contributed to this report.

such a well coordinated action with heavy use of grenades does suggest military training.
