A $1 billion deal to replace the Russian-made Shilka air defense system has drawn no bidders, though Russia has offered licensed production of the Shilka system as a separate arrangement.
Strange! Russia is advertising Pantsir system as the successor of Tanguska/Shilka. Why haven't they offered pantsir? Why license produce Shilka when you already have Tanguska?

^^^ Vikhr is a laser beam riding missile. It will require supporting systems on LCH which will not be needed once Nag comes online. Hence, waste of expenditure.

Only missile in the same class of Nag, fired by a helicopter and available for induction in near future is Spike.

Honeywell offers flight safety systems to Indian Air Force
Bangalore, Feb 10 (IANS) US aerospace products major Honeywell will equip the six C-130J Super Hercules aircraft the Indian Air Force (IAF) is acquiring with the military version of its traffic collision alerting system and other key safety devices worth $10 million, the company said Tuesday.

“Honeywell expects to deliver key aircraft systems that will enhance flight safety -including our aircraft collision avoidance system,” Honeywell vice president Vicki Panhuise said a day ahead of the opening of the seventh edition of the Aero India international air show here.
Honeywell has also raised the pitch to re-engine the IAF’s Jaguar strike aircraft with its F125IN turbofan that it says will considerably enhance the jet’s performance.

“The F125IN is an outstanding propulsion system. It will transform the Jaguars by improving mission performance, enhancing pilot safety, reducing pilot workload and reducing maintenance costs,” Panhuise pointed out.


This is the secondtime I am reading about re-engine programme for Jaguras..

Kazan helicopter plant have never made Mi-26.
Manufacturer of Mi-26 is Rostvertol PLC.

did we face any problems with honeywell during 1998 sanctions? or did HAL managed to completely indigenize the engine.

sergo, its known that Mi-26 has more capability to lift loads but then its a hangar queen and thats forcing India to look for other helicopters.

What are the significant advantages of it over Mi-26.
And how does it compare w.r.t the chinnook?

IAF is frustrated with maintainence problems of some russian aircraft, lack of spares etc. recent news of 70% of Russian Mig-29s have problems is not susprising anyone.

But can you tell me why Mi-26 is not in production? its a gr8 aircraft and still could many customers provided maintainence issues are resolved. why don't they simply produce modernized Mi-26 like Mi-17, IL-76 instead of going in for new design, Mi-46.

Bad news and good news in Ajai Shukla's blog about LCH.
extra weight and delays in manufacturing the tooling on which the LCH will be fabricated --- have pushed back the first flight by up to a year.

The private sector company that has designed the LCH’s fuselage, Plexion Technologies, is working overtime to cut down the extra 250 kg. Meanwhile HAL is trying to convince the air force to accept the first prototype with some extra weight, so that flight tests can begin

The air-to-air missile, which will be bought from abroad, has not been selected. The LCH was to be fitted with the DRDO’s Nag anti-tank missile, but the services want a missile that can hit tanks at 7 kilometers

Primary goal Ми-46 to fill niche between 5 tons Мi-8MTV(Mi-171,Mi-172,Ka-32) and 20 tons Ми-26, after Mi-6 finished operations.
Mi-46 load capacity 10..12 tons.

Maximum take-off mass 30 tons.
Cruise speed - 270 km/h.
Static ceiling - 2300 m
Dynamic ceiling - 5000 m.
Practical range - 400 kms.
Range with full charging - 750 km.
Mi-46 can transport up to 60 passengers or 10-12 tons.

The project detains absence of the engine with power 7500 - 8000 h.p.

Antonov Design Bureau to present new multipurpose An-74.

Antonov Design Bureau will present a program for the new An-74 multipurpose patrol aircraft at AeroIndia-2009 Airshow, which will take place in Bengaluru on Feb. 11-15.

During the exhibition, Ukraine and India are to discuss both the existing and new sectors of cooperation in aerospace industry, Interfax-Ukraine learned at Antonov Design Bureau's press service.

The modernized An-74 multipurpose aircraft is currently taking part at an international tender on aircraft supply to India's coast guard.

Ukraine is participating in the tender in cooperation with Sweden, Germany and India. The European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS), Israel, Canada and Russia are taking part in the tender as well.

Apart from this, the Antonov Design Bureau and the French company Thales jointly presented a modernized version of An-74 plane at a tender to supply patrol planes to the Indian navy.

According to the source, the results of both tenders may be announced in the middle of 2009.
The overall volume of An-74 supplies to Indian defense structures may exceed 20 aircraft.

This is what I read about Mig-29. Don't know its veracity, but is an interesting read.

Combat Helicopter prototype will fly in 2009: HAL design chief.

The prototype of India's Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) is presently being built and will fly by the end of the year, said HAL Rotor Wing Research & Development Centre (RWRDC) Design Chief Dr Prasad Sampath. He was speaking on 'Development of Helicopters in India – An Overview' today, at the Aero India 2009 International Seminar on 'Aerospace – Perspectives and Trends in Technologies', being held in Bengaluru from 9 to 12 February.

He said that the cockpit and fuselage design for LCH was complete, and the mock up trials were over last year. All dynamic systems of the LCH are identical to HAL's Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and only the fuselage and the landing gear have been designed afresh for the fighting version of the chopper.

After considerable design analysis, the weight class of the LCH has been maintained the same as the ALH, and therefore there should be little difficulty in the prototype successfully flying, he said.

The HAL RWRDC has also developed a helicopter simulator called the Hats-Off Simulator, which can be fitted with all the different cockpit mockups of the different choppers that HAL makes, he said.

The LCH was supposed to fly in Dec-08,but got postponed and now the date has been fixed in Dec-09.Quite a delay.

Indian Aerospace Industry
The Indian Aerospace Industry is witnessing an unprecedented growth. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which is fully owned by the Government of India, is the premier aerospace company in the country. 1. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (Hal)
HAL, a Defence PSU, is a major player in the global aviation arena. It has built up comprehensive skills in design, manufacture and overhaul of fighters, trainers, helicopters, transport aircraft, engines, avionics and system equipment. Its product track record consists of 12 types of aircraft from in-house R&D and 14 types by licence production inclusive of 8 types of aero engines and over 1000 items of aircraft system equipment (avionics, mechanical, electrical).

2. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)
Government of India established the Department of Space in 1972 to promote development and application of space science and technology in the country for the socio-economic benefits. Indian Space Research organization (ISRO) is the primary agency under the Department of Space for executing space programmes. During the early seventies, India undertook demonstration of space applications for communication, television broadcasting and remote sensing building experimental satellites namely, APPLE, Bhaskara – and experimental satellite launch vehicles, SLV-3 and ASLV.

Today, India has an impressive array of achievements with the largest constellation of domestic communication satellites called Indian National Satellite System (INSAT) in the Asia pacific region with about 210 transponders in orbit. And, India has plans to augment the capacity with the launching of INSAT satellites and increase it to about 500 in 4-5 years to meet its growing needs.

India also has the largest constellation of earth observation satellites called Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellites with better than one meter resolution. IRS data is being used for a variety of applications such as crop yield estimation, drinking water missions, waste land development, forest cover mapping and a host of other applications benefiting the common man. Using INSATs, besides TV Broadcasting, telecommunications and meteorological applications societal applications such as tele-education, telemedicine applications have been operationalised. Village Resource Centers (VRCs) combining the services of IRS and INSAT satellites for providing an array of services have been established. India, today is considered as a leader in the application of space technology. INSAT and IRS satellites are also providing invaluable services in disaster management.

To put the IRS and INSAT satellites into orbit, India has developed two work horse launch vehicles namely the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). PSLV weighing about 300 tons at lift off has the capability to put 1500 kg satellite in polar sun-synchronous orbit. PSLV with eleven consecutively successful launches has demonstrated its high reliability. PSLV has launched eight satellites for various customers from abroad. GSLV with four successful flights is capable of launching 2200 kg satellites into geo-stationary Transfer Orbit. India has also created world class facilities at its space port in Sriharikota near Chennai with launch pads besides a host of test facilities for testing satellites and launch vehicle systems.

3. Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO)
DRDO is a network of 52 Defence Laboratories in India which are deeply engaged in developing critical defence technologies covering various disciplines like aeronautics, armaments, electronics, combat vehicles, engineering system, instrumentation, missiles, advanced computing and simulation, special materials, naval systems, life sciences, information systems and agriculture.

Presently over 5000 scientists and about 25000 other scientific technical and supporting personnel back the organization. Several major projects for the development of missiles, armaments, light combat aircrafts, radars, electronic warfare systems etc are on hand and significant achievements have already been made in several such technologies.

4. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL)
BEL was established in 1954 to meet the specialized electronic needs of the country’s defence services, is a multi-product, multi-technology, multi-unit company. It serves the needs of domestic and foreign customers with the products/services manufactured in its nine state-of-the-art ISO 9001/2 and ISO 14000 certified manufacturing plants in India.

BEL manufactures a wide repertoire of products in the field of Radars, Naval systems, Defence Communication, Telecommunication and Broadcasting, Electronic Warfare, Opto Electronics, Tank Electronics and Electronic Components. With the expertise developed over the years, the company also provides turnkey systems solutions and Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) on “Build to Print” and “Build to Spec” basis. BRAHMOS has attained 100% success rates in all flight trials proving the adequacy of the missile system to a maximum range of 290 km with high accuracy and lethality establishing the reliability of the system in all weather conditions. Indian Navy & army have started the induction of the weapon system. The system will also be exported to a few friendly countries.

Thats what happens if you shoot your mouth off with unrealistic schedules just to bag the order. To be fair to HAL though, if they mention the correct schedules, the IAF will say too late and will go for foreign brochures.

Weird situation for HAL!!! :-?

I some time wonder is this delay calculated ?? I mean while planning does HAL actauully plans for possible reasons for delay ?? If yes then why do the re -appear time and then for almost every project . Do we ever learn ?? .. Typical example of poor project management

similarly Is this daye for Dec 09 has been published with an calcluated effort or it has just appeared as another date to be delayed in future

IAF Set To Grow in Size, Capability: Air Chief

BANGALORE - The Indian Air Force is to boost its conventional combat edge, said Air Chief Marshal Fali Major.

Addressing a news conference at Aero India 2009 on Feb. 12, Major said the fleet strength of the IAF will increase from the current level of 34 squadrons (18 aircraft to one squadron) to 39.5 squadrons by 2017-20.

Major also announced that the IAF will have a dedicated satellite capability by 2010.

The possession of a dedicated satellite capacity will give a boost to the Aerospace Command concept of the IAF, and speed up the introduction C4ISR capabilities.

The IAF chief said there will be a structural shift in terms of quality of platforms, saying the current 23 types of platforms are too cumbersome to maintain and the IAF needs to reduce the number of combat aircraft and helicopters types in the fleet.

The IAF is already on a global hunt for the purchase of 126 Medium Range Multiple Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) and has international competitions underway since last year for the purchase of replacements of its existing Cheetah and Chetak helicopters.

Admitting that there are gaps in its low-level radar defenses, Major said efforts are underway to rectify the problem.

The IAF is close to signing a contract for the procurement of 20 Low Level Transportable Radars (LLTRs) worth $ 100 million from Thales of France.

Under the deal, the LLTR will be made by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

Major also said the IAF will procure more unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Currently the IAF has Israeli supplied Searcher I, Searcher-II, Heron UAVs.

Sources in the IAF said a UAV procurement of attack UAVs was possible in the near future.

That is why there needs to be a reliable govt - one to provide proper direction without hurting anyone as far as possible?

HAL to deliver 260-270 ALHs for Rs16,000 crore.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has orders to deliver 260 to 270 Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH, christened Dhruv), worth Rs16,000 crore, company Chairman Ashok Baweja said here on Thursday. He told the media at the Aero India 2009 Air Show, underway from 11 to 15 February at the Yelahanka Air Force Station here, that the Bangalore-headquartered defence PSU has an overall order book position in excess of Rs50,000 crore.

The Union Cabinet has just approved HAL's Light Utility Helicopter project. This helicopter would be of three tonne class,he said. HAL has also bagged an order to deliver three Chetak helicopters to Surinam.

HAL would take up development of Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mark II – which will be a new aircraft – once it delivers 40 units of the LCA Mark I, including eight limited series production, 20 fighters and 12 trainers.

Major said there would be situations in the future when similar equipment and weapons would be with four different adversaries in a conflict. "What actually matters is the exploitation of the platform, your home-grown tactics and how you tweak that system to suit your requirements," he said.

On networking of platforms and weapon system, the IAF chief said the work on the Air Force Net and Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) was progressing well and the expected AFNET to be completed by June this year.

"All the 165 nodes of the AFNET would be linked by June. Three quarters of the work has been finished already. By June, we will complete this particular phase," he said.

On the Operational Data Link (ODL) for linking all fighter aircraft sensors, Major said the link would be in place by December 2010 or beginning of 2011.

Maxim Pyadushkin writes: Besides its Zhuk-AE AESA radar, Russia’s Phazotron-NIIR company is showing another new product at Aero India 2009 – the Zhuk M1E radar, with a mechanical slot array. As deputy director Yuri Guskov explained to Ares, the radar displayed in Bangalore is a production item and will be installed on one of India’s carrier-based MiG-29Ks.

Guskov said that Phazotron is already working on the next modification of its slot array radars, the Zhuk M2E. This version will have a faster processor, allowing it to classify targets by type (for instance, fighters, bombers and helicopters) and to break-out formation targets flying at 20-30 meters apart. The radar can also be programmed to identify aircraft by type – in the case of a new type, it can record its reflected signal and later use it for identification.

The Zhuk M2E should start flight testing this year. The modernized radar will equip 62 Indian Air Force MiG-29s that MiG is modifying to the MiG-29UPG configuration under contract to the IAF. MiG design bureau chief designer Vladimir Barkovsky said here that the first six aircraft have already been shipped to Russia. The Indian Air Force is expected to receive its first MiG-29UPG in 2010.
Guess this is a regular job for a radar to distinguish threat type. Or is it not?

Regular.... well, the technology has existed for a while, now the Russians have caught up on the intelligent bits of signal processing and analysis. Will be a good thing to have in the Fulcrum, which on a tech level is pretty old and puts a lot of things in the pilot's hands. Some automation will go a long way.

But this reference is made for the Zhuk M2E which is going to be a planned upgrade to the Zhuk M1E which we are getting in the Mig29K. So this means we are not going to have this capability on the new K's. IIRC Bars has this capability.

Isnt it will be a pain in the butt when coming to logistics and maintenance?
having only 40 of a peculiar type while the rest 180 of diff type?

while delays are extremely frustrating for jingos and HAL should do utmost to prevent them, a look up on the timelines and delays(if any) of similar projects worldwide might tell a story.

not really. these would be iterative versions of same a/c, expect most subsystems and LRUs to be identical.

anyway, this is how most air forces with domestic industries operate. just check how many variations exist for aircrafts like mig-21. :wink:

actually this again looks more like an aggressive offer being made by the supplier, rather than the IAF taking it forward (similar to the MiG-27 re-engineing by Salyut)..they've even put up a huge billboard near Yelahanka that shows a Jaguar in a tricolour scheme, calling the engine F-125IN.

^^Kartik, check out any news related to India on Defensenews, you will see a add by Honelywel on Jaguar re-engine (make the Jaguar Roar or some such thing). The first time I read about it was almost 3-6 months back. I don't think it is supplier driven agenda.
