From Offstumped's Yossarian:
In the past ten days 2 new Jihadi Videos have appeared on YouTube with a direct threat to India. The first one appeared last week of February and carries high definition Al-Qaeda images and closes with latest pictures of Indian Mujahideen accused being taken to a court in Mumbai the same week. The second one is a 6 part series that overlays Jaish-e-Mohammad's founder Masood Azhar's speeches with video from Gujarat Riots 2002. It is concerning that both these videos were tagged with the keyword BJP.

This six part series is a jehad video. Whenever such indoct rination videos appear wrt Gujarat/ India, it is followed by some attacks, atleast in recent times. Such videos should be removed immediately and the usual channels of tracking activated if not already done.

Ved Marwah's interview.
http://www.business-standard.com/india/ ... 13/343836/
The amendment to the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act is going to be India’s basic anti-terrorism law. Do you feel this is enough?
This law is better than not having anything at all. But the problem with this law is that it does not make the confession of the accused an admissible evidence in a court of law. In POTA, a confession before an officer of the rank of SP (Superintendent of Police) or above was useful in getting the terrorist punished. Now, if you cannot trust an officer of the level of SP, there is something terribly wrong with our system. Another flaw in the new Act is that the bail provisions make prosecution’s case difficult.

Through these two laws, it is clear that the Centre is still not ready to be held accountable for terrorist incidents. Through these laws, Mr Chidambaram wants to wield authority and power but is not ready to take responsibility and be held accountable.

UPA VIEW | Only the UPA can control terror
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Edit ... 272679.cms

17 Mar 2009, 0000 hrs IST, Abhishek Singhvi

The BJP's hypocrisy is reflected on several fronts be it the Ram Setu, the nuclear deal or VAT but nowhere is it as gross as in the case of the
terror debate.
Some of the worst incidents took place under their stewardship. The NDA's interactions with Pakistan were marked by zig-zags and threatening postures without extracting any concession.
The bus yatra was followed by Kargil and the failed Agra talks were followed by the Parliament attack. Apart from grandstanding on POTA, no concrete actions were taken nor any results achieved.
The recruitment of senior IPS personnel fell to one-third the previous level during the NDA rule with L K Advani as home minister.
The UPA is still grappling with the large number of unfilled senior IPS posts while both the IB and CBI have over 50 per cent vacancies at senior levels. The NDA was grossly negligent in providing protection to Indians.

By contrast, the Congress extracted an unprecedented admission from Pakistan about fomenting terrorism on its soil. Two seminal acts of Parliament creating a federal anti-terror agency and amending substantive law have been passed in record time.
Advani talked about the former from 2001 but could not even introduce a Bill. The UPA's philosophy in dealing with terror is not to indulge in jingoism or slogans. It is to take concrete steps dealing with police reforms, logistical support, an unprecedented dose of concerted, coercive diplomacy, investment in equipment and human resources, all within a humane and inclusive approach to governance which does not divide society or communities to reap cheap political benefits.

The parliamentary debate on both the recent Acts, initiated in the Upper House by the writer, shows how the new law is significantly different from POTA with a finer balance between state power and human rights. In the ultimate analysis, India's size and diversity show that only the UPA approach can reduce this scourge. It seeks to give ownership of democracy to all sections of society irrespective of origin, race, religion or ethnicity. The BJP approach, on the contrary, may well lead to the creation of Frankensteinian monsters impossible to control.

The writer is national spokesperson of the Congress.

The witness accounts with Kerala police in the case against some two dozen youths who harboured or helped Lashkar terrorists have turned the spotlight on the ruling LDF's newfound ally - Abdul Nasser Madhani.

The statement given by a key witness, Mani alias Yousuf before deputy superintendent of police V K Akbar reveals enough on the connections of terror mastermind Sainudheen alias Abdul Sathar with Madhani and his family. It may be recalled that Sainudheen, a native of Kondotty in Malappuram district was nabbed by Kerala police from Hyderabad in January.

An expert in electronics, Sainudheen was wanted by police in Gujarat, Delhi, Maharashtra and Karnataka for his alleged role in blasts in these states. The special probe team believes that he recruited youths for LeT. Abdul Raheem, one of the four suspected LeT militants from Kerala who was killed in Kashmir last October, was his son-in-law. Abdul Jabber, who escaped during the encounter at Kupwara, was his brother-in-law.
Yousuf said that he came in contact with Madhani in the Coimbatore jail when he was in jail for robbery. “I belonged to a Hindu family in Thoothukkudi. Madhani performed kaleema on me and converted me to Islam,’’ he stated. Thus, Mani became Yousuf and later when released, he was offered a job at the purdah shop run by Madhani’s wife Sufiya in Kochi.

Later, Yousuf attended terror camps at Neerchal in Kannur and in Hyderabad. Others who attended the camp included Fayiz, Abdul Rahim, Fayaz and Mohammed Yasin who were all killed in an encounter in Kashmir. Yousuf claimed that he and his wife had visited Madhani’s house during training.

The BJP has alleged that the LDF government had intervened to halt further investigations in this direction.
And hobnobbing with such $@%^# is very secular in India!!!!

...........He(Varun) is talking about the area and the region which was proposed as the prospective “Muslim Pradesh” by SP leaders some years ago.

Moreover, I believe the same region has seen a massive surge in communal violence since last 2 years which has resulted in migration and demographic shift.

Co-incidentally that region also happens to be one of the seed points for the paki dream of Mughalistan.

Am i seeing a trend here or am i having something really good!

Yes, SP 'leader' Azam Khan had asked the districts around it to be converted into Muslim Pradesh and the Mughalistan map covers this sensitive region.

Tension grips as RSS man gun down in riot hit Kandhamal

Excerpt.
Bhubaneswar (Orissa): Tension on Thursday once again gripped Orissa’s riot hit Southern districts of Kandhamal after some unidentified gun men shot dead one RSS leader of the district, Police sources said.

The victim was identified as P Panigrahi of Bandapipili village, was in the hit list of the alleged Maoists. The rebels shot him dead at Rudigaon area, situated some 150 kilometers away from Phulabani district headquarters.

The killer however blocked the road between Kotagada and Rudiguma by felling trees, which took more time for the police to reach the spot after clearing the road, sources added.

Panigrahi, a known RSS activist, preferred to stay at a different place instead of his house as he feared danger to his life, police sources said.

The youth was the second RSS Swayam Sevak after 33-year-old Dhanu Pradhan to be killed in the ongoing ethno-communal riot in riot ravaged Kandhamal.

Pradhan was killed on 5 November, 2008, while Swami Laxamananda Saraswati was gunned down on 23 August, 2008. With killing of Panigrahi, the death toll in the Kandhamal violence had touched 44.

Meanwhile, the brutal murder of RSS worker might further aggravate the situation with BJP announcing to make Swamiji’s murder case as major poll issue.

The incident has sent a shock wave among RSS workers in the riot hit district. Now that the saffron BJP was out of the government, the angry Sangh Parivar could unite this time to take revenge of Hindu killings, police suspect.

Senior RSS and VHP leaders here have alleged that the killers were not Maoists but paid goons of Church. “This was an act of Church to demoralize tribal Hindus in Kandhamal,” Hindu Jagaran Samukhya State chief Ashok Sahu added.

After the killing of Swami Laxamananda Saraswati, it appears that the Naveen Patnaik government has adopted a 'go slow' policy wrt to the converted Maoists.
He was the first who wanted to revert illegelly built ''prayer houses'' of the converted Panos, even though land righst are only with native Kandhs. Due to the poor and pathetic attempts of Naveen, the Maoists are making bolder moves such as killing down RSS functionaries. And their comrades-in-arms , the Church Bishops who have played a part in converting them are suddenly backing Naveen and giving him certificate of character . Only last year, the bishops were asking for his head after the ''Nun Rape Case'', which till date is stuck as neither the niun nor the ''Father Thomas'' wish to assist the police.

The assembly elections in Odisha, along side LS Elections, this year are of enormous importance to many a player in the background. Funnily enough Naveen is discussing "seat sharing" with the left parties which have 2 seats in the 147 member Odisha assembl y. Hopefully, like Chattisgarh, the people will elect a government that does not explicitly panders to the converting and killing terrorists.

Also, if the attempt of the Chinese Party of India (Maoists) , succed in creating a red corridor from Bengal to Kerala, then the threat perception to India and Indian civilisation would be very high. The efforts of the Left front from TN to Odisha give a pointer to their desperst situation. For them it appears, it is NOW or never.

Kolkata police arrest Pakistani terrorist
19 Mar 2009, 2038 hrs IST, PTI

KOLKATA: A Pakistani terrorist was arrested from the Eastern Railway headquarters in the city by the Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata police on Thursday

"Shahbaz Ismail, 27, is a member of the terrorist outfit Al-Badar. He confessed that this was his first assignment in India," Joint Commissioner of Police (STF) Rajiv Kumar said.

The terrorist was arrested at 3 pm from the ER headquarters at Fairlie Place, adjacent to the West Bengal secretariat and RBI office in the city.

"Ismail had recently come to Dhaka from Karachi and from there he crossed the Rajshahi border and reached Malda. From Malda he took a train to Sealdah. He confessed during interrogation that he had intention to reach Jammu and Kashmir on a special mission," he said.

"A cell phone and a SIM card of Bangladesh has been recovered from him. He didn't have a passport and so it is certain that he infiltrated into the country with an evil purpose," Kumar said.

Asked about the terrorist's intention to go to Jammu and Kashmir, Kumar said "He has not said anything so far but the interrogation is yet not over. We are still interrogating him," Kumar said.

Ismail had joined Pakistan Rangers in 2004 and had joined Al-Badar in 2008 after quitting it, he said.

Son of Gulam Farooq, he is a resident of Tousa police station of Dera Gazi Khan province in Pakistan, he added

Naveen's success is a classic of realpolitik
When the mantle of his father Biju Patnaik fell on him in 1997, Naveen was the proverbial outsider. A social butterfly, he floated in the glamorous company of the likes of Jackie Kennedy, Nancy Reagan and Mick Jagger under party lights across the globe.

You heard this here first -- BJD/BJP were doing a 2/3-1/3 share of Orrissa votes. Now BJD-CPM are doing the same.

BJD/BJP direct confrontation on seats?
BJP being free to take a strong line towards anti-hindu riots and killings etc?
BJD not getting any flak from psuedo's on the same during election?

Chandan Mitra met Naveen Patnaik -- and they know each other from their social Delhi days and the parties decide to suddenly break up.

Reaction from Chandan Mitra on Naveen Patnaik?
Reaction of BJD/Patnaik on BJP?

Strange wouldn't folks say :!: :?:

Stranglehold of terrorism network
First Published : 19 Mar 2009 02:18:00 AM ISTLast Updated : 19 Mar 2009 12:50:51 PM ISTTHIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even as the Home Department and the CPM are frantically trying to shove allegations about Abdul Nassar Madhani’s terror links under the carpet, more evidence cementing the allegations have come out.

The Special Investigation Team is in possession of clinching evidence to link Ummer Farooq and Sabir, accused in the Kalamassery bus burning case, with LeT ultras. A couple of witnesses deposed before the SIT that Ummer and Sabir had been workers of the PDP and associates of Sufiya Madhani.

Another stunning revelation is that Sabir, a native of Perumbavur, was the link through which Sarfaraz Nawaz, nabbed by the Central Intelligence agencies from Muscat, had been transferring funds for terrorist activities in Kerala. Last October, Sarfaraz Nawaz transferred Rs 50,000 to Sabir through Subair, a friend of Sabir and a native of Chengola in Ernakulam.

Subair told DySP P.K. Ranjan during interrogation that Sarfaraz Nawaz called him thrice to ensure that the money was received and handed over to Sabir. “The amount was transferred through Western Union Money Transfer. I received it from Perumbavur post office,” he said.

Subair, who is doing plywood business in Perumbavur, said that he had a long acquaintance with Sabir. He testified that Sabir had been a PDP worker and was involved in the Kalamassery bus burning case. “Thadiyantavide Nazir alias Haji used to come to Perumbavur to visit Sabir,” said Subair.

Wonder where all the Times NOWs and NDTVs have gone when such nightmarish stuff is tumbling out in Kerala? Not a word about all these shockers anywhere....

Where are the "Big fights", "we the people", "newshour debate" on this scary issue of sections of well off IMs in far away Kerala committing open treason? I guess these issues are very minor compared to "Chaplain statues" and "pink chaddis"!!! :x :-?

Local News channels (like Asianet News etc.) had reported about the new findings. It was about how some of the Jehadis and their buddies were in close contact with Abdul Nassar Mahdani. But then again the Home minister himself is now on the record stating that all the allegations are based on past incidents (when Mahdani had terrorist leanings, or when he was in Coimbatore prison) and nothing new. We could expect this rant because CPI(M) is now planning big time alliance with NDF/PDP etc.

What is required now is Karnataka Police asking for the case diary and take Mahdani to custody. Kerala Police how ever smart they are would not be able to with stand the political pressure put up on them. BTW, one of the officers leading this special team is a Muslim himself. So that should suppress the cry of "minority harrasment" yada..yada..yada..

World agencies gearing up to thwart upgraded Islamist terror
Using novel, upgraded tactics, Al Qaeda and fellow Islamist terror groups are outperforming anti-terror agencies in their attacks on targeted countries. International counter-terror agencies are worried enough to start retooling their counter-measures after viewing terrorist performances in Mumbai on Nov. 2008, killing 172 people, Lahore on March 3, causing 8 fatalities, and the Jordan Valley, shooting dead 2 Israeli policemen.

The Israeli spy satellite acquired by India in an extra-fast transaction is capable of day-and-night viewing and all-weather imaging, which enables Indian forces to keep track of terrorist movements through the low-cloud cover prevailing in the monsoon season. India is the first country in the world to acquire a surveillance satellite tailored specifically to counter terror.
So, we have actually acquired the satellite and it was not DDM?

RISAT
Radar Imaging Satellite (RISAT) is a microwave remote sensing mission with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) operating in C-band and having a 6 x 2 meter planar active array antenna based on trans-receiver module architecture. SAR is an all weather-imaging sensor capable of taking images in cloudy and snow covered regions and also both during day and night. RISAT weighs 1,750 kg.

Image
Design verification model of Synthetic Aperture Radar for RISAT undergoing near-field test

During the year, preliminary design review for the ground segment has been completed and flight model activities taken up. The satellite is planned to be launched on board PSLV during 2008-09. Some of the new technological elements in RISAT are: 160 x 4 Mbps data handling system, 0.3 Nm (50 Nms) reaction wheels, antenna deployment mechanism, 70 V power bus, thermal control of SAR antenna and phased array antenna (with Dual Polarisation).

I think this is the Indian RISAT being constructed indigenously and to be launched next year.

We are launching a Israeli RISAT currently and DDM was trumpeting that we were acquiring the RISAT we were launching. However, the article posted above seems to imply the same. :-?

Finally the long drama came to an end in which the UPA govt once again showed its stupidity and inability to handle anything, especially related to security. I dare say, forget to host the Olympics forever with this attitude.

I was already surprised, and am sure many of you were too, that govt was not able to provide security to IPL saying elections and all. WTF? Does all Indian security go to sleep in elections? How are we supposed to protect our borders in elections than when we cant even protect IPL? How are we planning to protect Commonwealths? And how will we ever get a hosting of Olympics with this attitude? The govt should have said in one go that they will provide security elections or not. This would have been a fitting reply to the terrorists. What we have done is surrendering to them. Its a shame to country of a billion people.

OK fair point about planning ... but let me put it this way ... when IPL was making a decision about the dates for IPL 2009, were they not aware that there was a very high chance that the dates they chose would end up smack in the middle of the General elections.

It doesn`t require a genius to know that it is constitutionally mandated that the 15th Lok Sabha has to be convened before June 2nd 2009. Working backwards from that date, it would be pretty obvious to anybody with half a brain that the general elections would happen in the April-May time frame. Elections can`t be held in Feb-Mar as that is the time when board exams for 10th & 12th standard students are underway ... Does it not show piss-poor planning on the behalf of IPL ?

Look .. I am am basically a BJP supporter and therefore no fan of the current govt. but even I feel that in this case the govt. has done the correct thing ... IPL should take a back seat to general elections ... as simple as that...

No they were not aware of this. Up until October it seemed LS elections would be held in February.

Link
Last month, the Congress strategy managers had virtually finalised a February election. Now, as the global economy heads towards recession, and the Manmohan Singh government is becoming apprehensive about its repercussions on India, the Congress party wants to push them back as much as possible.

The article that you linked to mentions that in October, Congress was planning on holding the election in February. It is not same as up until (as you say).. In fact, it does not say that in April 2008 (which is when IPL announced the dates as per your previous link) the tentative dates for the election were Feb 2009.

So, in my opinion, it still shows that IPL did not plan things well ...

Here's LK Advani saying in March 2008 that elections are possible in January or February.

IMO since IPL announced their dates first the Election Commission should have taken their dates into account if the government was not sure of providing security to both the IPL and the elections at the same time.

Sorry .. that still doesn't cut it ... LK Advani was not in the govt (though I hope he wins this time) .. so he could have said anything and it still would amount to nothing ... If the IPL folks based their decision on his statements, then they are bigger fools than I had earlier imagined ..

IPL is a private franchise and Election Commission is in no way obligated to take their dates into account before announcing the election dates ....
As for providing security for both is concerned ... I think the Mumbai attacks were the game changer here .. I think we would not be having this conversation if the Mumbai attacks had not happened ... if anything ... I would like the govt. to err on the side of caution ... and between IPL and Elections, I would pick the elections any day ...
