Camels to have their own Squadron Museum
[Hindustan Times, 11 November 2004]

By Man Aman Singh Chhina

Chandigarh-based No.48 Squadron of the Indian Air Force has hit upon a novel idea to commemorate its 45th Raising Day on November 15th. Thanks to the efforts of the Squadron's Commanding Officer Group Captain Rajeev Sachdeva, the 'Camels', as the Squadron is popularly known, will join the select units having a Squadron Museum exclusively dedicated to themselves. Group Captain Sachdeva and his team have been making tireless efforts for the past one year or so in getting together the Squadron history and memorabilia so that the museum could be finally opened this year. Air Officer Commanding 12 Wing Air Commodore S.S. Tilloo will do the honours while first Commanding Officer of the Squadron Group Captain Jaspal Singh will be the guest of honour.

Also present on the occasion will be around 25 former Squadron flyers, along with their spouses, who are now settled in and around Chandigarh after retirement. Group Captain Jaspal raised the Squadron in Srinagar on 15 November 1959. However, it was in February 1960 that the Camels received their first aircraft, the erstwhile warhorse of transport fleet – Packet. Group Captain Sachdeva said the history of the Squadron and mementoes were scattered around and the end result was achieved by taking help from various quarters, including Air Headquarters. "We have also managed to collect photographs of at least 70% former Commanding Officers of the Squadron and these will adorn the museum walls," he said.

One of the events on the day of the inauguration, which would bring back memories for the veteran flyers of the Squadron, will be a pre-flight breakfast on the Squadron premises, says Group Captain Sachdeva. All Air Force pilots have this meal before they undertake the first sortie of the day and, invariably, it is quite rich in its contents. No.48 Squadron is nowadays equipped with AN-32 transport aircraft and is one of the frontline transport squadrons providing supplies and ferrying troops to the Army units deployed in Ladakh. In winters, when the road link with Ladakh is snapped due to heavy snowfall, the transport squadron based in Chandigarh plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the chain of supply is not broken.
