paulm wrote: The ethnicity of the attackers thus varies from crime to crime. The police are telling the truth when they describe the attacks as largely motivated by opportunism, because Indian students work late at night, live in lower-cost neighbourhoods, and are regarded as soft targets.
That is a dangerous route to go in. Then the logical thing would be for Indian students to band together and put the fear of god in their would be tormentors by making an example of one or two. This would lead to strong retaliation logic. Lets have some moral clarity on this , instead of blaming the victim, "soft targets" , "non aggressive" and other kinds of cop outs.

If it comes to a stage where the Australian state is unable to fulfill it's primary duty of maintaining law and order, then only the law of the jungle will rule and you will have a full blown war . I dont think that Australia would want that on it's hands either.

I think India should cancel cricket visits by and to Australia until further notice as well. To maintan peace and security of course. Don't wait for the pompous 'Roos to cite "security concerns".

Australia appears to be aspiring to the status that South Africa "enjoyed" in the 1970s.

Stupid article, IMHO..

1. Caste is not equal to Racism. Caste is much more liberal, with high degree of social mobility and much more complicated than simple black-white discrimination.

2. Africans were not frowned upon because they were black.. Many Habeshi people were famous rulers in many parts of India, especially in Konkan and few rulers in Bengal as well. The Habeshis in Konkan were hated not because they were black but because they were fanatic muslim rulers who indulged in slave-trade and forcible conversions. But so was every Muslim ruler who was indulgent in such practises. Many of Habeshi rulers were loved by their subjects because of their just rule. Habeshi is geographical term referring to people from abyssinia or Habeshan or Eastern Africa.

3. The obsession for fair skin colour is Victorian in origin. And this is slowly decreasing..

The protests has been called off by students after meeting with deputy PM Julia Gillard and police. Students have been assured about meeting their demands I believe. Tension on HP streets was quite high since last two nights triggering spat between lebanese and Indian community. Such retaliatry attacks from any side would only increase chances of someone being seriously injured or perhaps killed. IMHO there is no need for further speculations. Indians are better off with targetting all Oz's rather then just focusing on middle eastern community.

STUDENTS ATTACK US COUPLE MISTAKING THEM FOR AUSTRALIANS

Mysore, June 10 (MRS)- A group of engineering students allegedly attacked a couple from the US mistaking them to be Australians. According to sources, the car of Annie Lunt and Lynn Browning hit a scooter injuring an old man.

Students of a nearby engineering college rushed to the spot and entered into a wordy duel with the couple, tearing the man's shirt in the melee. It was only when one of the students shouted "you dirty Aussies," that the couple realised the reason for the attack.

The couple showed the students their passport saying that they were Americans. Only then they were allowed to go.

Annie and Lynn took the old man, who was injured, to a near-by hospital and got him treated at their own cost. They are in India on a six-month tourist visa.

This is stupid and shooting oneself in the foot. How does cancelling an Indian tourism marketing event help India or hurt the Aussies? Wit holding clearance for new Indian students on safety and discrimination grounds will be a good start.

That is not necessary. We can play matches with them since its a good rivalry and we make money from it. Just prevent Indian TV channels from carrying live coverage of bi-lateral series that do not involve India, such as the Ashes. Much as they keep saying that the test match audiences in Aus/Eng stadiums are good compared to India, it is Indian TV audience that pays their bills.

Not only the ashes but domestic cricket between third rate local teams in Aus and UKstan is beamed live on Star Cricket. Which other country carries live Ban vs Zim test matches?

Without Indian TV international cricket would be broke.

^ I know... check the streets of Bangalaru you would find more soccer wannabes roaming in chelsea or Manu jersey's ; these folks would play soccer on PS-3 or X-BOX and idolize Beckham as the greatest mid fielder to have played the game.

Spanish league is on any day more entertaining than EPL , with long range shoots and pretty neat dribbling skills on display ,EPL is more of a rugby match these days no space for creative play and referees being more lenient on foul play ensures a dull goal less match .

Well, if the police had done their jobs in the first place Indian students wouldn't feel like they have to escort each other home from railway stations late at night. Nor would 1000 Indian students have gathered on Sunday at Town Hall and this week in Harris Park to protest about the lax policing.

And a pathetic comic writer at that. He had a silly irritating cartoon strip "Dubyaman" which was published in Times of India. Pathetic jokes, for which people won't even laugh even if offered money to do so. A very minor reason for me to move away from Times Of India.

22-year-old Indian student attacked in Australia
MELBOURNE: In yet another racial attack on Indians in Australia, a 22-year-old student was allegedly assaulted by a teenager in Adelaide after making "rude" comments about his turban.

Police said the student suffered a broken nose in the assault in Adelaide's busy market area of Rundle Mall yesterday and that they have arrested a 17-year-old youth in this connection.
Now tell me this is not racial attack.

^^ this incident I would rate it as horrible and massive degeneration of human values from the society. I would say even in India which is branded as racist on basis of caste have the society which is atleast 1000 years advanced in human values. In India, if a local guy or guys are beating up a foreigner people would gather around and question and if the foreigner says that he/she is harrassed by this local fella, people with actually bash the local guy and save the foreigner. Man this is heights of racial intolerance. Aussies are doomed. If it happens to Indians it will happen to anyone this includes Chinese. If they are pro-active they will already be acting by now.

A 17 year teenager beating a 22 year Indian guy ? And it looks like the attacker was single.Going by the 'turban', i would assume the Indian is a Sikh. Why did not the 22 year Indian did not retaliate and beat the hell out of that 17 year bogan. Irrespective of the pathetic S.M.Krishna's 'you went to study there, not to fight' pathetic comments, the Indians need to realise that the attacks on them will stop only when they stand up and start retaliating.I am telling this from personal expereince.

Indians are known to be weak and pansy. Ask any non Indian Muslim guy about what the Islamics really think about Indians. They all have stories about how they conquered some part of India, and while they pretend to be apologetic now, the glee is evident. It's time to kick some ass, I say. Indian men at least in big cities need to go to gyms during teenage years and become big and strong. Indians are known to be intelligent around the world, we need to develop other facets too.

what I don't get is that, unlike the US, you don't have much worry about the miscreants having guns, so that should even out the playin'g field. but apparently, our youths' timidity remains a metaphor of how we deal with Pakistan etc.

Exactly. Both the White racists and the Islamists respect strength, especially Physical strength.Indians may be hardworking, intelligent and gets top ranks in foreign universities, but if they cant develop physical strength , then all these acheivements will not last long. The Primary reason why India lost its position as the world's largest economy in the 1st century AD to a developing country by the end 19th century is because it neglected the physical aspect of power. There is a short story in Telugu which goes something like this - A Brahmin and a fisherman were traveling together in a boat. The Brahmin boasts to the fisherman that he knows Vedas, has knowledge, he can quote any texts etc. Suddenly there is a rain and the boat rocks. The fisherman asks the Brahmin whether he can swim to which the Brahmin replies no.The fisherman then says, all his knowledge is waste since he does not even know how to physically protect himself in times of crises and he is about to die.Saying this, the fisherman jumps into the river and swims ashore and protect himself while the Brahmin not knowing how to swim drowns in the river inspite of all his knowledge.

Indians desperately needs to concentrate on their physique and stamina. In the place where i live, i hardly see any Indian in a Gym or doing running or jogging in the park.Even if they do, they do it one, two weeks and then again its back to normal. No wonder even a 17 year old gora can beat a 22 year old Indian without expecting any retaliation.

Physical strength, eh? Mental strength, IMO counts for more. Like I heard on a redneck forum a while ago:
G_d created all man, but Sam Colt made them equal.
It makes sense to retaliate within limits. And appear ridiculously irrational at times. IMVVHO.

Problemo is the agents in India who have instilled fear in these kids that if you get involved in a fight or altercation you will have a bad record and you will either be deported or your application to Permanent Residency will be rejected. It is a requirement that you get a AFP(Federal police) clearance before applying for a job on a working visa or for your application to residency, these ill informed students don't know that self defence does not show up a conviction or time served.

Physical strength, eh? Mental strength, IMO counts for more. Like I heard on a redneck forum a while ago:
You need both. And it starts with mental strength and attitude. It is quite common to see a subservient attitude amongst Indian students who go to study abroad as if the host country is doing a favour in allowing them to study whereas the reality is that they are being allowed to study either becoz they bring in a lot of money for the host country or they have skills/ability which will prove useful to the host country after they graduate. In a nut-shell, they need to lose the attitude that charity is being done for them and if any bongo-jingo-redneck idiot tries to assault them, they are well within their rights to kick their butt. Ofcourse caution is necessary here too since if one has a gun, best thing in most cases is to give whatever they want to rob. But if it is just fists and boots type stuff, atleast try your best to retaliate instead of cowering under the blows and acting Gandhian

If you are not a hot head type who can make up for fighting skills and experience with rage and adrenalin to take on an attacker it is a tough ask for a normal person to fight back while trying to take cover. This is usually the case not just for Indians but even for the supposedly macho ethnics you can think of.

The problem here I think is the body language some Indians convey which comes across as cowering. Add to that all these cultural memes of Indians being little non violent vegetarians overawed by the whiteness of the whites and too eager to please. There is nothing in the cultural domain for westerners to see that shows Indians as anything else. There are no well known exploits in war, martial arts, sports and not even organized crime that Indians can boast about as a badge of their machoness. Bollywood has further made this worse with its sissy boy image of heroes breaking into a song expressing how full of girlie emotions they are prancing around the girl like retarded children.

It will change as evident from the number of Indians who came out in the spontaneous protests in ozland. To their credit they maintained the rage even the president of Indian student organization who I was expecting under pressure from popular media, cops and pollies would turn into an Indian politician like the foreign minister.

Having said that Indians should know that these suburban aussie kids are weak as p!ss. They can be easily made into sign posts for the rest to exercise caution when it comes to Indians.

The suburb that simmers
As the week's protest divided on ethnic lines, as carloads of Lebanese men from Merrylands and Dundas arrived, the issue took on a racial dimension - a particularly nuanced one that does not pit a single culture against another, but in which a thin band of young men in each culture is present, a group of supposed victims pitted against what seemed to be their attackers.

On Tuesday, when news trickled through of another violent robbery - an Indian cleaner, beaten unconscious by Middle Eastern men near Warwick Farm station - the belief seemed to be confirmed. "It is racially motivated," said Jay Singh, a friend of the cleaner.

Each night the rally gathered in front of a Lebanese market that has operated in Harris Park for 30 years, but the business was not attacked. On Wednesday police directed the Lebanese coffee house across the street to close early, though the older Lebanese men drinking there were ignored by the crowd.

On Tuesday night a carload of young Middle Eastern men tore up Marion Street, chased by a hundred young Indians. "F---ing Lebs," the group's apparent leader yelled. "You want to kill me, kill me. You are f---ing racist."

Later, a text message told the crowd there was a car of Lebanese men on neighbouring Weston Street. Twenty protesters broke away from the police cordon and ran up the street into a wall of white tracksuits. Two were beaten with poles, one was hit by a car. "Maybe tonight someone will be killed," an Indian hospitality student said. "What will police do?"

As individuals Indian students may cower but as a mob the potential of Indians to unleash chaos is unimaginable. Just look at the kind of student protests we have in India. OZ land might learn that the hard way one of these days. :|

Indians should learn to treat their lower castes better
The MOFO who wrote that is an NRI.

GOI should have a program of tracking down such Indian-origin people and blacklisting them, they and their families should be banned from ever getting OCI or even visiting India.
