The Borei class submarines have pump jet propulsion according to wikipedia
The Borei is claimed to represent the state of the art in submarine design, incorporating characteristics that make it superior to any submarine currently in service, such as the ability to cruise silently and be less detectable to sonar. Advances include a compact and integrated hydrodynamically efficient hull for reduced broadband noise and the first ever use of pump-jet propulsion on a Russian nuclear submarine.[2] Costing some $890 million USD,[3] Borei is approximately 170 metres (560 ft) long, 13 metres (43 ft) in diameter, and has a maximum submerged speed of at least 46 kilometres per hour (25 kn; 29 mph). Smaller than the Typhoon-class, the Borei was initially slated to carry the same number of missiles (20) but has been forced to sacrifice 4 missiles due to the increase in mass of the 45-ton Bulava SLBM (a modified version of the Topol-M ICBM) over the originally proposed R-39UTTH "Bark".

http://www.timesnow.tv/INS-Arihant-form ... 323142.cms

India on Sunday (July 26) reached a milestone when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur launched the country's first indigenous nuclear-powered submarine 'INS Arihant' for sea trials. Kaur broke a coconut and performed a puja after which she unveiled a plaque naming the 112-metre-long submarine. "I name it INS Arihant. All the best to the submarine," she said.

Do we trust this? Then the sub is definitely 6000 tonnes.

Austin, something in the lines of this?

BTW your current location puzzles me. NIS in Russian stands for naval research and survey ship, Chakra was never classified as that. It was designed UTS for some time - study and training station.

The ATV ?
Image

The body might be 104m. The total length including the propeller / pump jet might take it to 112m.

First Sandeep Unnithan comes up with an Akula like design. Although he mentions that this is based on an entirely new design. So naturally everyone assumes this is either the akula or the severodvinsk design.
Now it turns out we are talking of a Borei like sub.

Initially it was 104m 6000 tons 80 MW reactor,
Now it is 112m 5500tons.

Off to Visakhapatnam...

I'm travelling to Visakhapatnam today to cover the launch ceremony of India's first nuclear-powered submarine, INS Arihant. A full report later in the day. I did a half-hour special show on the submarine on Saturday evening, with studio guests Vice Admiral Raman Puri and Brahma Chellaney. This will be up on the Headlines Today website tomorrow. Meanwhile, the videos of some of the stories we ran on the channel are here, including an on-cam chat with India Today Associate Editor, Sandeep Unnithan.

It's funny how I -- and, no doubt, every other Indian defence journalist -- have spent much of my (short) career writing semi-speculative reports about the shadowy ATV. And now all of us watch as it creeps out, not just from its dry-dock, but from a blanket of studied and meticulous secrecy. A few years ago, a day such as today promises to be, was not near imaginable. And it's happened progressively. First the tacit official admissions that the programme exists. Then the soundbytes about how it's a technology demonstrator. Then the unbridled use of the word ATV. And now this. I don't know what I'll get to see in Vizag later today, but I can tell you it's still somewhat unbelievable. I can only imagine what it must be like for folks who've written about it for the better part of 20 years!

Here's wishing everyone a safe Vijay Diwas. Do take a moment out, if you can, for those who died for this country. Nabha Sparsham Deeptam. Shano Varun. Jai Hind.

Keep checking Shiv Aroors Live fist, If we get anything it will be from here. Livefist http://livefist.blogspot.com/. I better go and take my blood pressure pill.

Hmmm seems so saar jee :-? , may be because they all are having half baked reports for now (access issue ?), I am trying to search on our good old days DD1 but seems they are just talking on it, no categorical info :|

Using simple physics and approximating that the sub is a cylinder with length of 112 m and radius of atleast 5m and the fact that a submarine should stay submerged we get a displacement of 3.14*112*25 tons which is 8792 tons.(density of water =1ton per cubic metre) :D
The lower bound for sub's displacement is 8000 tons (provided it is 112m long)

Sandeep and other jurnos just did their job to best of the ability and the info they got from their source , blame the GOI for keeping the lid tight on it.

SNaik , its in a way modeled around Borei and does have hump like the Borei has , certainly not the Delta type turtle back hump.Certainly those Rubin model have their influence , with props.

It should be INS Chakra . thats my little baby now :)

FWIW the pennant mystery

S-71 Old Chakra ( Charlie 1 )
S-72 - New INS Chakra ( Akula 2 )
S-73 - INS Arihant

The new INS Chakra will be commisioned before INS Arihant.

Dont know, Austin saying it has hump. Borei without hump looks like Akula..in a crude way...so may be...
