IMVHO all this demystifying of ATV , the real credit should go to Sandeep Unnithan , he is the real Mr ATV for aaam junta like us :)

Certainly there are lot of things that people in those position cannot revel , they are jurnos but have a responsibility towards the nation , so they say and revel things which does not hurt such strategic project. So guys he deserves the real credit

MMS is indeed standing before the baby, and the sail has a fwd slant, can't be sure of size as it's shot from an angle. Seems like a small Borei..... :D

Seems will have to wait more to see the shape its clear photos are not allowed. Maybe we will see in thr Rday floats.....

The submarine is 170 meters (580 feet) long, has a hull diameter of 13 meters (42 feet), a crew of 107 (55 officers), a maximum depth of 450 meters (about 1,500 feet) and a submerged speed of about 29 knots. It can carry up to 16 ballistic missiles.

Two other Borey-class nuclear submarines, the Alexander Nevsky and the Vladimir Monomakh, are currently under construction at the Sevmash shipyard and are expected to be completed in 2009 and 2011.

"The construction is going according to schedule," Kalistratov said.

Russia's Navy commander, Adm. Vladimir Vysotsky, said in July that the construction of new-generation nuclear-powered ballistic missile and attack submarines is a top priority for the Russian Navy's development.

ok our ATV is a smaller version of borey class with some what smaller dia and length so it for the time being will carry only medium range agni 3 type SLBM and not topol m type icbm - that is acceptable

note the sevmash conncetion please -shankarosky

which means it has OK650 type reactor with 190 MW power output .The reactor can propel Borey in excess of 29 knots which is almost 14000 tons so our Arihant will move close to 40 knots just like an akula 2 submerged with a tonnage of 8500-9000 tons

How did u get the 25 tons sirjee?? PI * (10 m ^2) *90 m * 1 ton/m3 = 28k tons... doesn't compute. I took 90 m length to compensate for the tapering tail side.

And how can we extrapolate from submerged to dry displacement?? Arun saar... any nifty calculations here plz..

most likely, it is a background wall with a pipe. The color is also seems to be different.

Code-named Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV), the submarine christened 'INS Arihant' (destroyer of enemy) was launched for sea trials at the Matsya naval dockyard in Vishakapatnam. As India has declared "no first use" of nuclear weapons, the country's weapons system must survive a first strike for retaliation. Therefore, Arihant's primary weapon is stealth as it can lurk in ocean depths of half a kilometre or more and fire its missiles from under the sea. The 6000-tonne submarine is powered by an 85 megawatt capacity nuclear reactor and can acquire surface speeds of 22 to 28 kmph (12-15 knots) and submerged speed upto 44 kmph (24 knots). It will be carrying a crew of 95 men and will be armed with torpedoes and missiles including 12 ballistic missiles. Four more nuclear-powered submarines of this class have already got government's nod and these would add to the Navy's underwater combat potential in the years to come.

So the rumors of it being based on the severodvinsk class were untrue! I'll still wait for some up close pics before calling its design based on the Borei. If someone remembers, there were reports of funds allocated for the Vik were directed to the design of the Borei class and its accompanying Bulava buddies.

Could there be something happening under the sheets here, that is the question...

The surface looks right for anechoic tiling, not a sub pen wall. Cabling should be there for power supply - nobody has the said that the reacor is running, it should be done after launch.

This is certainly not the case. The diameters of Borei and Akula are both 13.5 meters at their widest. ATV is 10m. And russians or any body else certainly wont transfer the tech of their most modern naval reactor for any money.

How sure you are of the diameter ? of arihant

why are we leasing akula 2 possibly 2 nos if not for better exposure to the navy?

akula 2 is quite similar to borey and that is the only factor that makes sense about extra money for gorky and other defense deals -the extra money going arihant way -this is the way any black project is funded anywhere in the world

if thet transfered su-30 tech and willing for mig 29 tech and mig 21 tech and most of brahmos tech and delhi class tech why not borey tech -that is why i call myself shankarosky

dot believe a word about the specifications in all ddm including ndtv -they know nothing about submarines

It is 8500-9000 tons submerged 6500 ton surfaced displacement modified Borey /akula period -no doubt

the coconut is being broken on the sail where the name plate have been welded on the sail -Austing just make a blank post to confirm if my guess is right

hmm, nice chance to meet Igor then :D

Ok, going by Sandeep's first article on ATV, which mentioned different length for K-15 missile and other things which are not correct, the "crude way" in which he "sees" might have been the reason for mentioning it as Akula - not crude Akula. :)

The submarine is 112-metre long.

The 6000-tonne submarine is powered by an 85 megawatt capacity nuclear reactor and can acquire surface speeds of 22 to 28 kmph (12-15 knots) and submerged speed upto 44 kmph (24 knots). Four more nuclear-powered submarines of this class have already got government's nod and these would add to the Navy's underwater combat potential in the years to come.
INS Arihant can also be armed with cruise missiles. The Defence Research and Developmen Organisation is already working on an equally secretive Sagarika project for a 700-km K-15 missile, capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
Moscow [ Images ] will again lease out two Akula-class nuclear submarines to New Delhi [ Images ] for 10 years. Plans to deliver the submarines this June were hit by a mishap during sea trials late last year. But hopes have soared for its delivery in 2010 after Russia took out the repaired vessel for sea trials again early this month.

We have to make heart of submarine tick, says project head

The head of India’s ambitious project to build a nuclear powered submarine, Vice Admiral (retd) D.S.P. Verma, Sunday said that the vessel is ready and now they have to make its heart, the nuclear reactor, tick.

INS Arihant, the country’s first indigenous nuclear powered submarine, was Sunday launched at the Ship Building Centre here, catapulting India into the league of five elite nations.

“The air, oil and water are the fluids running in a submarine and the nuclear reactor is the heart. We have fitted everything and now we have to get the fluids to flow and the heart tick,” Verma told IANS on the sidelines of the launching ceremony.

It will take two years of sea trials before the submarine is commissioned in the Indian Navy.

The top secret Advanced Technology Vessel project, which built the vessel, was conceived in 1984 and the steel for the submarine cut in 1998.

“This is the first time that such a project was conceived and undertaken in the country. … All the facilities and the infrastructure had to be set up from scratch,” said Verma.

The ATV project has been the result of the active collaboration of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, Department of Atomic Energy and other public and private sector undertakings. Private industrial players like Larsen and Tourbo and Tata Power helped in making the project a reality.

“The second submarine will have more indigenous components,” Verma told IANS.

According to sources, construction on the second submarine has already begun.

“The trials will have to be undertaken to establish the reliability. Design is only the dream of a person and implementing it is different,” Verma said, adding that “11 years to construct a submarine is not bad at all”.

The project had to face initial hurdles like technology denial and miniaturising the nuclear reactor to fit the 110-metre long and 11-metre wide submarine, which has a surface displacement of 6,000 tonnes.

The nuclear power will help the submarine to remain underwater for longer durations - a factor that will help increase the geographical reach and endurance of the Indian Navy.

The submarine will be manned by a crew of roughly 100 sailors trained in India.

The launch ceremony was performed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s wife Gursharan Kaur here.
