Yes, complete fiction produced in the 'Prithviraj Raso' written centuries after the actual events. But off topic for this thread and you may pose further inquiries in the Distorted History thread.
Pranav wrote:There are some rabid sections of society that are beyond reach, and they tend to dominate the discourse. But the majority is much more approachable, imho. Otherwise they would not have defied the separatists to vote in large numbers.
The same majority did not protest at all when the marriage took place. So in this case the police is pandering to the narrow rabid sections by kidnapping the boy from Jammu and killing him off. The silent majority will be further intimidated by this gross violation of human rights.

That much one can agree with. No need to gratuitously provide fodder to the rabid types - but India will lose credibility if justice is not done.

Another ‘killing’, another disgrace for J&K cops
http://www.dailypioneer.com/208479/Anot ... -cops.html
After the Shopian rape-cum-murder and Amandeep killing case, there is another taint on khaki in Jammu & Kashmir. The State cops are being held responsible for alleged torture and killing of a Hindu youth in police custody in Srinagar.

A newly-wedded Valley woman, who married the Jammu youth, is alleging that her family and police joined hands to eliminate her husband in police custody. The woman is a Muslim.

Jammu-based businessman Rajneesh Sharma was found hanging inside the lock-up bathroom of the Munshi Bagh police station on October 5, 2009. Sharma had been picked up by the Kashmir police on September 30 from the Jammu residence of his elder brother, Pawan Sharma, who is an employee of the State Road Transport Corporation.

An eerie silence prevailed in the Valley over the alleged custodial death, but Jammu has been seething in anger for the past four days. Sharma’s family members cried foul when they saw signs of brutal assault on his body. Suspicions grew stronger over the police role when Sharma’s family members discovered that the Munshi Bagh police station had recorded the name of Pawan Sharma, Rajneesh’s elder brother, as the person who was found dead inside the lock-up on October 5, 2009.

Demanding a fresh post-mortem examination, the family refused to cremate the body till the guilty were punished. Sharma had married Amina Yousaf, the daughter of Mohd Yousaf, after she converted to Hinduism on August 21, 2009. Her family members had opposed the marriage and the decision to change her religion.
An FIR was lodged by Amina’s parents alleging abduction of their minor daughter by the Jammu-based family. Before performing the last rites of Sharma on Saturday, Amina — who has since rechristened herself as Aanchal — alleged that her brothers had kidnapped her husband from Jammu on September 30 with the help of Kashmir police. Though aware that they were taking Rajneesh Sharma with them, they mentioned the name of Pawan Sharma in police records to mislead the probe.

“My father, who works with the Vigilance department, knows how to armtwist the law…. He must have bribed the policemen to kill my husband,” Aanchal alleged. “My parents killed my husband. My brothers were also involved in the crime as they were all opposed to my relationship. Within a month of my marriage, I became a widow because of my own family. They brutally tortured my husband and killed him in cold blood,” a wailing Aanchal murmured before the cremation.
Post-mortem confirms severe torture marks

http://www.dailyexcelsior.com/web1/09oct12/news.htm#3
"The post-mortem report has confirmed multiple marks of torture and injuries all over the body of youth. There were many other injuries on the body which are of multiple dissection that indicates torture", the report said in its preliminary opinion.

"The torture was severe. There were so brute marks of torture that they could have sniffed the life out of the youth. However, we can’t conclude that the youth was killed purely due to torture or there were some other reasons. Only a detailed questioning of SHO and other police personnel of the police station can establish the facts", a doctor, who was part of the Board of Doctors, said commenting on the report.

Pro-azadi town now turns to Indian govt

12 Oct 2009, 1146 hrs IST

For the first time on Monday (October 12), the people of Kupwara made an emotional appeal to the Indian government wanting jobs and better prospects. Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district remained shut down on Monday with protestors blocking roads at various points. Vehicular traffic was also blocked. This time though, the protests are not for 'Azadi', but for better governance.
Legislators, intellectuals, traders, lawyers and transporters of the district joined in the protests for better governance. One of the key demands of protestors is the reservation of jobs for locals in Kupwara district.

Protestors called a bandh in the frontier district following the selection of “outsiders” mostly from particular Jammu districts against the openings in district cadres of Kupwara.

People of the border district, including legislators, are up in arms against the inter-district recruitment policy describing it as sheer discrimination against the unemployed youth. “How can the unemployed youth of Kalaroos, Karnah, Mawar and Lolab compete with the youth of Jammu who regularly enjoy sufficient coaching at the tuition centers and study in prestigious institutions of India. We wouldn’t allow them to snatch our right. How can they apply for district cadre post here,” a postgraduate student from Handwara said.

What is surprising is that the Kupwara district on the border of India and Pakistan has been fiercely pro-Azadi. In the last 20 years they have observed 2000 bandhs. On an average 100 days of protests and strikes demanding Azadi, boycotting polls etc.

I feel vindicated. We had a discussion on this issue few moons ago! Not to rub salt to the injury... but we must protect the special history of our kupwara brothers.

Kashmiri demonstrators urge Pakistan to leave Kashmir

Kashmiri nationalist parties who demand unification and independence of Jammu and Kashmir held a picketing outside Pakistani High Commission in London.

Despite the wet weather a large number of Kashmiris gathered outside the High Commission and shouted pro Kashmir slogans; and demanded that Pakistan must not annex Gilgit Baltistan as it will lead to serious problems for Pakistan.

People of Jammu and Kashmir hitherto have been keen in speaking against Indian role in Jammu and Kashmir and having demonstrations against India, but it looks tide has turned.

People of Jammu and Kashmir have seen true intentions of Pakistan and feel no hesitation in standing outside High Commission of Pakistan and shout 'Pakistani forces out of Kashmir'. 'Pakistan ka jo yaar hai - ghadaar hai ghadaar hai, Ilaaq ka jo yaar hai Ghadaar hai, meaning who so ever is friend of Pakistan is a traitor....who so ever is for accession is a traitor.

Demonstrators also shouted against India and demanded that India should also leave Kashmir; and that Jammu and Kashmir should become an independent country. It was a big demonstration if we compare it with demonstrations of Kashmiri and Pakistani held in London over the past years; and people travelled from various towns to express their anger and disapproval of what Pakistan was doing in Gilgit and Baltistan and 'Pakistani Occupied Kashmir'.

It was interesting to note that some pro Pakistan Kashmiris were also present to show their support for this picketing, and for the first time they spoke out against Pakistani policies with regard to Kashmir. They said they were deeply disappointed with policies of Pakistan; and wanted to show their anger and frustration.

Demonstrators shouted Zardari jee ye Kashmiriyoun ke saath Ghadaari hai, meaning what you are doing is treason to Kashmiris. They also said Geelani jee hamain ye ghulami qabool nei.... Bacha bacha kat maray ga Kashmir sooba nei baney ga, meaning Prime Minister Gilani we reject this slavery - reference to a new package on Gilgit and Baltistan. They said every Kashmiri child will die but Kashmir won't become a province of Pakistan.

Demonstrators got really angry when Pakistani High Commission even refused to accept a petition from respected Kashmiri leaders representing various political parties. 'This is like rubbing salt in our wounds', said Dr Shabir Choudhry, Spokesman of Kashmir National Party.

He said, 'We used our democratic right and like civilised people did not use foul language against Pakistan or threw stones or tomatoes at the High Commission. We were here to express our disappointment and anger; and least we expected was that someone from the High Commission come out and receive our petition and pass it on to President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani that they also know what our concerns were'.

Abbas Butt, Chair of KNP said, 'The attitude of the Pakistani officials was very annoying and this was a slap on our faces. It was a common decency that they should come out and meet the Kashmiri leaders. It is their arrogance and wrong policies which is turning Kashmiris against them. Today even pro Pakistan Kashmirirs have come out to protest against their policies in this cold weather'. He said, 'Pakistani officials treat Kashmiris as slaves of medieval times who do not deserve basic humane rights, but they are wrong we will fight back and get our rights'.

JKNLF President Mahmood Kashmiri expressed his deep anger on attitude of Pakistani High Commission officials. He said, 'They should have enough decency to come out and meet us. They have shown that they are worse than Indian officials. At least Indian officials respectfully take petition from us when we hold demonstrations outside the Indian High Commission'. He said, 'Our struggle is against wrong policies of Pakistan and not against the State of Pakistan, but you can see after refusing to accept petition some Kashmiris have shouted slogans against Pakistan. This is no way to win minds and hearts of people', he added.

When the delegation that went to hand - in the petition came back and explained what had happened, some Kashmiris in frustration and anger shouted anti Pakistan slogans. Leaders acted quickly and requested them not say anything against state of Pakistan, however still some shouted, 'Kashmiriyoun ka barra qatil Pakistan and chhotta qatil Hindustan'- meaning, 'Pakistan is a big murderer of Kashmiris and India is a small murder'. Also they said, 'Kashmiriyoun ki Azad ke do shaitan eik India doosra Pakistan'- meaning 'Two Satans are against Kashmir's independence one is India the other is Pakistan'.

Tahir Bostan, President of JKPNP also expressed his anger against the attitude and arrogance of the Pakistani officials. He said, 'This attitude is insulting. This shows what respect Pakistani officials have for Kashmiri leaders'. He said, 'Our struggle against wrong policies of Pakistan will continue, and we will start a campaign against Pakistan, and will hold a series of demonstrations outside different Pakistani missions'.

The Jammu Kashmir National Liberation Front, Jammu and Kashmir National Awami Party, Kashmir Freedom Movement, Jammu Kashmir Plebiscite Front, Kashmir Liberation Organisation, Association of British Kashmiris, Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (Y),Jammu Kashmir Peoples National Party and the Kashmir National Party were among the parties that were present at the demonstration. Kashmir Sikhs feel neglected by Governments
A very genuine grievance.
Sikhs living in the Kashmir valley are being ignored by both the Central and State governments, even as they live in fear-psychosis and with no attention being paid to their problems, alleged leaders of the All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee here.

They demanded adequate representation in the government at all levels. “The Sikhs of Kashmir Valley live under fear-psychosis mainly due to the ignorance and indifference on part of the government in power. This fear-psychosis has resulted in gradual decrease in the population of Sikhs in the valley, as our grown-up children have developed propensity towards moving out in search of jobs, higher education and security,” Committee coordinator Jagmohan Singh Raina told a news conference here.

Though they are not at fault, it is a matter of great concern for the entire community. Regrettably, successive Central and State governments have turned a blind eye to it and have apparently forgotten the Sikhs of the valley, he added.

Wasn't this guy made the OIC envoy on kashmir last month?
Nothing will come of this move, except lots of traveling by the envoy and his team to hunt a few bustards in pakistan, and hunt other two legged birds in Monaco, and all around the western world in order to "interact and discuss" the issue.

Appoint a saudi prince to do some hard lobbying for some foreign cause. Indeed a masterstroke. :rotfl:

Farmers push wives to front of poppy war

Yusuf Jameel

Srinagar

Oct. 16: Illegal hemp and poppy straw farmers in the Kashmir Valley have pushed their womenfolk to the front to face the police and other agencies when they appear in the countryside to flatten their standing crops in an intensified campaign by the local police’s Crime Branch and the excise department.

Hemp and poppy are cultivated on thousands of acres mainly in the Valley’s southern Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian districts. In the past one week hundreds of Kashmiri women have clashed with the police to resist what is officially described as a major anti-drug drive. Officials claim such crops were destroyed across approximately 45,000 acres in the past three weeks as part of a multi-pronged strategy to stop drug cultivation and trafficking.

"Initially the male farmers came in our way. But when we stood firm they encouraged their womenfolk to face us," said Nazir Ahmed Laharwala, a member of one of the teams. Though hemp and poppy straw are cultivated in many parts of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and some Northeast states, farmers in the Kashmir Valley have taken advantage of years of insurgency. Officials say Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian and Pulwama districts are the main sources of narcotics production in J&K.

Excise and taxation field officer (South Kashmir) Ghulam Ahmad Bhat admitted that people of the area, particularly those of Dupatyar, considered the hub of bhang cultivation in north India, resisted his team and that it was only after two police companies had joined his team that it was able to destroy the crops.

Police and excise department officials say illegal farming of these crops around Shopian town grew during the 47-day agitation against the Shopian double rape and murder incident. As the police and other agencies chose to avoid the area due to the mounting public anger, unscrupulous elements took advantage and increased the illegal farming of hemp and poppy straw.

Kashmir is a Muslim-majority region and, paradoxically, many of those involved in the cultivation of cannabis or any other narcotic crop prohibited under Section 8 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985 say the Quran is silent on the issue. This despite the fact that Muslim clerics have already declared it "haraam", or unlawful.

A state excise department spokesperson, meanwhile, said here the drive against bhang or opium farming will continue and appealed to the general public for support in the eradication of the "evil".

Officials said thousands of kgs of charas (hashish) are smuggled out of the Valley to the Indian plains, particularly Maharashtra and Goa, every year. "But the vigorous campaign underway is likely to halt illegal narcotic transactions," said a senior excise department official. He added, "We’ve successfully completed the first phase of the campaign, during which standing cannabis crop that would have yielded more than 100,000 kgs of narcotic drugs was destroyed."

Could have been a false positive. If the tv channels are correct, this explosive detector device is something new that has been bought recently. Seems man portable unlike the bulky scanner type devices in the airport.

Kashmir solution: Chidambaram blissfully ignorant

Hari Om

17 October 2009

Home Minister P Chidambaram has disappointed the whole nation. He has dumbfounded everyone who believes in national unity and integrity and Indian sovereignty; who abhors and hates communalism, terrorism, separatism and politics National Conference, People’s Democratic Party and Pakistani-style.

The case in point is the outrageous and highly controversial speech he made on the second day of the All India Editors’ Conference in Srinagar on October 14. He said: “Voice of separatism in Kashmir is a reality…There is a political problem in Kashmir and it has to be solved…Centre would start a dialogue…but it will be a quiet dialogue and quiet diplomacy, away from the media glare, till a political solution to the problem is arrived at…The dialogue cannot take place in the glare of the media…The dialogue will be held quietly – one-on-one, two people to two people…Once the broader contours (of a solution to the Kashmir issue) are arrived at, it will be made public…The solution (to Kashmir problem) must recognize the unique history and geography of Jammu & Kashmir. Solutions to other problems in India cannot be replicated here. We may find a unique solution, there is nothing wrong…But it must be acceptable to the vast majority of the people of Kashmir .”

What exactly does he mean by “quiet dialogue” and “quiet diplomacy”? What does a “unique solution” mean? What does he mean by what he called “the unique history and geography of Jammu and Kashmir ”? Why is he hiding things from the nation? Why is he not explaining the contours of the so-called solution to the so-called Kashmir problem?

Is Chidambaram representing the Indian nation and the Indian State or is he representing those in Kashmir, the United States, China, Pakistan, Libya and so on who are working overtime to ensure the segregation of Jammu & Kashmir from India on the ground that it is a Muslim-majority state; that Kashmiri Muslims (read Kashmiri-speaking and Kashmiri Sunnis) are a race apart and cannot live in a democratic and liberal India?

Has Chidambaram forgotten Jawaharlal Nehru who got Sheikh Abdullah dismissed and arrested on 9 May 1953 on the charge that he was hatching, in collaboration with the United States , a conspiracy to de-link Kashmir from India and establish a “Switzerland- type of Independent Kashmir”? Does he know Indira Gandhi dismissed Farooq Abdullah in 1984 saying the National Conference leader had become a “threat to national security”? Has he forgotten Rajiv Gandhi dismissed GM Shah, son-in-law of Sheikh Abdullah, in 1986, for identical reasons? Has the Home Minister also forgotten that the Congress to which he now belongs snapped all ties with the National Conference in 1977 and again in 1984 and 1990 for almost similar reasons?

The answer is: Yes, he and others in South and North Block have forgotten everything and are now indulging in unsettling activities to please and appease Islamic terrorists and religious bigots.

What does all this signify? Well, many things. It signifies the willingness of the Congress-led UPA Government to grant major concessions to the politics of terrorism, blackmail, communalism and separatism being practiced by all Kashmir-based leaders. It signifies the decision of the Congress-led UPA to barter paramount national interests and compromise the age-old Indian position on Kashmir to pander to communalists and extremists and their source of inspiration - Pakistan . It signifies the willingness of the Union Government to give absolute and unbridled powers to the Kashmir leadership that helps it enslave, further exploit, humiliate and disgrace the people of the state in general, and the people of Jammu and Ladakh in particular, and weakens the northern frontiers with a view to extending their tentacles to other parts of India with utmost ease.

All this also signifies the baneful influence of a handful Kashmiri leaders and of Wajahat Habibullah, Chief Information Commissioner, on the Home Minister, nay on the Congress-led UPA Government. It further signifies the chicken-heartedness of the Union Government, as also its bungling instinct. It signifies that the Congress-led UPA is incompetent to promote paramount national interests and defend the very institution of the Indian State . It signifies that the Union Government has willingly walked into the American trap and refashioned its foreign policy taking into consideration the views of Pakistan , Kashmiri leadership, terrorists and so-called human rights activists masquerading as peace-mongers. It signifies the humiliating defeat of those in Delhi managing affairs relating to internal and external security.

It can be construed that the Congress-led UPA has raised its hands before a handful of Kashmiri separatists and communalists and that it is treading a dangerous and suicidal path.

The Home Minister said the Kashmir problem is a “political problem.” He is totally wrong. It is a pure communal problem – created by the sectarian, anti-secular, anti-democratic and pro-Pakistan Kashmiri Muslim leadership. Can the Home Minister say that the people of Jammu and Ladakh and displaced Kashmiri Hindus are part of the ongoing separatist movement in Kashmir ? He cannot.

Can he say that the people of Jammu and Ladakh and displaced Kashmiri Hindus want a dispensation outside the Indian constitutional framework; that they want withdrawal of the Army and paramilitary forces and anti-terror laws from the state? He can’t. Can he say that the people of Jammu and Ladakh and displaced Kashmiri Hindus want withdrawal of Central laws and institutions from the state? He can’t.

The Home Minister says the solution to the so-called Kashmir problem has to be such as “recognizes the history and geography of Jammu & Kashmir.” Does he know anything about the state’s geography and history? It can be said without any hesitation that he is blissfully ignorant about both.

The history of Kashmir is that it has always been ruled by outsiders. The only exceptions were Avantivarman (ancient times) and Sheikh Abdullah and his son, son-in-law and grandson; Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad, Shams-ud-Din, GM Sadiq, Mir Qasim, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Ghulam Nabi Azad (after 1947). The history of Kashmir is that Jammu ruled over it during ancient times, medieval times and modern times. The history of Kashmir is that its leadership has all along indulged in intrigues with a view to enabling outsiders to rule over the Valley and it continues to do the same even today.

Today each Kashmiri Muslim leader looks towards Pakistan ; each one wants the aims of Pakistan to be fulfilled; each one hails Islamabad without any reservation. The history of Jammu and Kashmir is that both these regions have never shared each other’s perception; both regions have all along treaded different paths - Kashmiri Muslim leadership has been treading the separatist path and the Jammu leadership the path to Delhi; the Kashmiri Muslim leadership has been pouring venom on India and everything Indian and the Jammu leadership hailing New Delhi and everything Indian.

The history of Jammu & Kashmir is that while Kashmiri leaders contemptuously dismiss the people of Jammu as “aliens” and “outsiders” and condemn the Treaty of Amritsar under which the State of Jammu & Kashmir came into being in 1846, the people of Jammu dismiss the Kashmiri leadership as a “bunch of exploiters” and “communal” and “separatist”. The history of Kashmir is that those who have been ruling the state and exploiting political power since October 1947 to enrich themselves and the Valley at the cost of Jammu and Ladakh and the Indian tax-payers are involved in separatist activities.

The history of the separatist movement is that the unpopular separatist leaders have all along been defeated by Kashmiri Muslims. The latest example is the humiliating defeat of People’s Conference chairman Sajjad Lone, son of the slain Abdul Gani Lone, in the 2009 general elections. He could not lead even in one Assembly constituency – even in his own home constituency and a constituency which returned his father to the Assembly several times!

The geography of Jammu & Kashmir is that mighty Pir Panjal constitutes a very high wall between these two regions and that it was the people of Jammu and their ruler who founded the State of Jammu & Kashmir in March 1846, using their political and diplomatic skills and after making supreme sacrifices. It was the people of Jammu and their ruler Gulab Singh who founded the Jammu & Kashmir State at a time when the princely states were crumbling one by one like houses of cards before the canny British imperialists.

This is the history and geography of Jammu & Kashmir; this is the history of relations between the people of Jammu and the Kashmiri leadership; this is the history of the role Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi played to isolate Kashmiri separatists and check the fissiparous tendencies in Kashmir; this is the history of the role Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi played to integrate the state into India. They introduced hundreds and hundreds of Central laws in the state; they brought the state under the ambit of several Central institutions, including the office of the Election Commission of India, Supreme Court of India and the Comptroller and Auditor-General; they abolished the offices of Wazir-e-Azam (Prime Minister) and Sadar-e-Riyasat in 1965 and brought the state at par with other states of the Union by replacing these nomenclatures with Chief Minister and Governor; they abolished the obnoxious permit system in order to enable the people of the state and all other Indians to visit any part unhindered as Indian nationals.

To say all this is not to suggest that the Congress did not commit blunders. It made several blunders. It incorporated Article 306-A (370) in the Indian Constitution to fulfill the communal and separatist urges of Sheikh Abdullah, and it signed an unsettling accord with Sheikh Abdullah in 1975, enabling the latter to seek withdrawal of any Central law he considered harmful for the identity of Kashmir and Kashmiri Muslims.

Home Minister Chidambaram must not go by those in Kashmir who distort and murder history to promote their vested interests. He should not allow himself to be guided by those who feed wrong information and misinterpret things to mislead and hoodwink New Delhi . He should not use terms such as “quiet dialogue”, “quiet diplomacy” and “back channels”. These are all disturbing formulations. He should do things in a transparent manner and take the nation into confidence. His approach needs to be holistic, secular and nation-centric.

His approach should be to isolate, marginalize and reduce to nullity all those in Kashmir who preach communalism, use terror as a weapon to force down the nation’s throat their pernicious ideology, and who do not believe in the concept of the other, or whose ideology rigorously excludes others professing different faiths. He should dismiss out-of-hand such formulations as “Kashmir, Kashmiris and Kashmiriyat” and, instead, recognize that a small section of Kashmiri Sunnis is involved in subversive and communal activities and that an overwhelming majority of the people in Jammu & Kashmir is for peace, tranquility, development and socio-economic and political regeneration.

Chidambaram must remember that any concession to the state would mean a major concession to terrorism and extremism; a step short of independence. He must stop saying that “solutions to other problems in India cannot be replicated here” (Kashmir) for the simple reason that the state is part and parcel of Indian civilization, and is an integral part of liberal India .

But more than that, the Home Minister should study the state’s demographic landscape before speaking on the state and on the nature of the Kashmir crisis. He should read the autobiography of former President R Venkataraman and go by his suggestion on Jammu & Kashmir, which he gave the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, that Jammu should be given statehood, Ladakh should be given what it wants, and deal with Kashmir separately.

In fact, this is the only option available. Not to exercise this option and to continue to cling to the line the Home Minister and the Prime minister are pursuing would only create more problems rather than resolving existing ones. Follow Venkataraman and resolve the issues facing the state, subject to the condition that nothing is done that dilutes Indian sovereignty in Kashmir ; weakens the northern frontiers; and gives any kind of respectability to the cult of the gun; that recognizes and rewards communalism.

New anti-terror security system raised alert on J&K cricketers
http://www.indianexpress.com/news/new-a ... s/530473/3

At the heart of the controversy surrounding the arrest and subsequent release of an under-22 Jammu and Kashmir team cricketer, Parvez Rasool, and the police interrogation of his room mate, Mehrajuddin, over the suspicion of the presence of explosives in a kit bag in their room at the Karnataka State Cricket Association’s Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, is a brand new, privately outsourced, anti-terrorism system put in place by the KSCA at the stadium.

The new mechanised system triggered off a panic wave that resulted in the Bangalore police arresting Rasool. But preliminary chemical analysis of the kit bag and the KSCA Club House room of the two cricketers by forensic experts have revealed no trace of the military explosive material C4 or any other explosive substances.

“We did vaporisation tests and other rapid chemical analysis tests of the kit bag but it showed nothing for explosives. We tested the handheld detectors used by the private agency on the suspected bag but it is not consistently showing signals for the presence of explosive traces in the bag,” sources in the forensic department said.

On Saturday morning, the new sophisticated remote explosive detector and handheld explosives detectors deployed at the stadium had reportedly indicated the presence of traces of C4, an explosive mixture containing RDX, in Rasool’s kit bag.

The new anti-terrorism security services at the Chinnaswamy Stadium has been contracted to a Hyderabad-based private firm, Brio Macro Security Pvt Ltd, who are channel partners of the US-based Homeland Security Strategies Inc.
Among the devices deployed by the security agency are programmed remote explosive detectors that claim to pick up traces of explosive substances from distances upto a few kilometres, and handheld detectors that zero in on the explosive material.

Police and forensics experts in Bangalore have now sought scientific validation checks on the explosives detection system. “The KSCA security officials said they had not tested the equipment on actual explosive materials. We are asking for these tests to check if there are some errors,” a senior police official said.

Bangalore police commissioner Shankar Bidari said the kit bag has now been sent for detailed forensic analysis. “When the police entered the room, the instruments pointed towards a bag but no explosives were found in it. Even then, as a measure of precaution, we took the person possessing the bag into custody. His antecedents are being verified from the Jammu and Kashmir police,” Bidari had stated on Saturday following the arrest of Rasool.

Postage stamp on Maharaja Gulab Singh released
Image
Sachin Pilot along with Dr Karan Singh (former Union Minister) released a postage stamp of Maharaja Gulab Singh in presence of prominent persons of Jammu city.

Mr Pilot recalled the great contributions of Maharaja Gulab Singh and said that he extended the boundaries of this great state up to Tibet, China and Afghanistan. He extended his gratitude to Dr Karan Singh to provide him this opportunity and said that this great ruler is a source of inspiration for many in the world. His great commanders like Gen Zorawar Singh have earned the laurels world over for the achievements.
Good to see a union minister recognizing the historic independence of Tibet, and that too while attending a function in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir. This news item should be played up in forums, blogs, Twitter and social networking sites to rile the Hans.

Top rebel killed in Kashmir: Indian army

SRINAGAR, India — Indian soldiers shot dead three suspected Muslim militants including a wanted commander on Wednesday during a clash in revolt-hit Indian Kashmir, the army said.

"One of the slain militants was a senior commander of Hizbul Mujahedeen," the spokesman said, referring to the region's most powerful group fighting to merge Indian Kashmir with Pakistan.

He identified the slain commander as Maqsood Bhat, who had headed a list of "most wanted" militants in the area.

The day that changed Kashmir's fate 62 years ago
London-based Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Choudhry describes Oct 22, 1947, as a "black day". He says Jammu and Kashmir would never have been a subject of dispute had Pakistan not launched "unprovoked tribal aggression against the people of the state" more than six decades ago.
Choudhry, who belongs to the Kashmir National Party (KNP), says Pakistan unleashed "extremist war in (the) name of jehad in 1947 to advance (its) political agenda" in the state that was yet to decide on whether to accede to India or Pakistan after the blood-stained partition of the subcontinent.
"If there was no tribal invasion, then there might have been no Kashmir dispute," Choudhry said in an e-mail interview. "Oct 22 is a black day in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. The attack of the tribesmen forced the ruler of the state to seek help from India and subsequently accede to India."

Kashmir was one of the 565 autonomous states of British India that had a choice to accede either to secular India or Muslim-dominated Pakistan after the end of colonial rule. The accession, however, was the prerogative of the ruler, not of the population. Most of these princely states acceded peacefully, except for Junagadh (Gujarat), Hyderabad, Tripura and Jammu and Kashmir.
Muslim-majority Jammu and Kashmir, then ruled by a Hindu maharaja, proved to be and still is the biggest bone of contention between India and Pakistan - the two countries that rule the state in parts but claim it in full.
Maharaja Hari Singh, the last Dogra ruler of the state, who was dreaming of Kashmir as an independent nation, had signed a standstill agreement with India and Pakistan to buy more time to decide on the political affiliation of his state. As history has it, the agreement was violated by Pakistan that tried to force the issue, encouraging first a local uprising and then an invasion by tribesmen backed by its army.
On Oct 22, 1947, thousands of Pakistani tribesman from the North West Frontier of Province (NWFP), known as Lashkars, invaded the state, letting loose a rein of terror.
Nearly 1/3rd of the territory now known as Azad Jammu and Kashmir, or Pakistan-administered Kashmir, fell to the raiders before the maharaja pleaded to India for help.

Indian troops, airlifted into the Kashmir Valley on Oct 27, succeeded in blocking the tribal army's advance beyond Baramulla, a frontier district in the north of the valley.
BBC's Andrew Whitehead, who has chronicled the tribal raids in his "A Mission in Kashmir" (2007), gives an account of one of the survivors of the invasion. Sister Emilia, a nurse in a Christian missionary hospital, spoke about the time "when the faith and vocation of the missionaries had been put to their greatest test", Whitehead writes in his book.

"There were rumours that they (tribesmen) were coming - we were thinking they won't do nothing to us. The Monday after the feast of Christ the King they reach here. Then they started to shoot. They came inside. We were working still. Our dispensary was working still. The hospital had patients. They were on the veranda of the hospital, going from one ward to another," Emilia is quoted as saying in the book.

"Sister Emilia and other nuns were lined up in the mission grounds, sure they would be shot. They were saved by a man who turned out to be a Pakistan army officer in civilian clothes who had been given the task of instilling a semblance of military coordination among the invaders," Whitehead writes.

The tribal army, although indisciplined, was a formidable fighting force. But at Baramulla, as the Pathans dispersed in search of loot, it lost its momentum. Many Kashmiri Muslims initially viewed the tribesmen "as liberators", but their "appetite for loot" cost them that support.
The tribesmen managed to advance to the outskirts of Srinagar before the maharaja came off the fence and signed up to India. It was a profound political and military setback for Pakistan's ambitions in Kashmir.

Kashmir remains one of the world's most enduring geopolitical faultlines, complicated by the rise of Islamic radicalism and the three wars India and Pakistan fought over the land.

Towards Kashmir Talks - Edit in The Hindu
Mr. Chidambaram made the case for quiet, behind-the-scenes talks: a constructive dialogue, as he put it, rather than a photo opportunity. That dialogue, highly-placed government sources have told The Hindu, is already under way: separatist leaders, including All Parties Hurriyat Conference chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front leader, Yasin Malik, have met with high-level functionaries in the Union Home Ministry.
Two challenges now lie ahead. First, J&K’s fractious secessionist groups must agree on a road map for progress. Secondly, Islamabad’s support for the dialogue process must be secured. Pakistan would do well to appoint an envoy to continue the secret dialogue held by Satinder Lambah and Tariq Aziz, which yielded a set of agreed principles for a resolution of the Kashmir conflict in 2006.{So, India is engaging in Track-II talks even as TSP is systematically conserving its terrorist leaders and their infrastructure and engaging in brazen attacks as shown by the Kabul blast and the fear expressed by MMS & PC. All the while, Indian leaders take Indian citizens for a ride by saying that no talks are possible unless TSP convicts 26/11 terrorists. :evil: }

sridhar saar,
So, India is engaging in Track-II talks even as TSP is systematically conserving its terrorist leaders and their infrastructure and engaging in brazen attacks as shown by the Kabul blast and the fear expressed by MMS & PC. All the while, Indian leaders take Indian citizens for a ride by saying that no talks are possible unless TSP convicts 26/11 terrorists.
Not sure if this can be interpreted thus. All the article shows is that till 2006 track II talks happened. Are they happening now, hard to say. I hope not.

A study in contrast.
Kashmir was the only necessary war Pakistan fought
Kashmir 1947-48 was the only necessary war we fought. It gave us the parts of Kashmir now in our possession. The 1965 war was a delusional general's supreme folly. The 1971 war was a strategic black hole created by our political failures. Kargil should never have happened.
{though he doesn't explain why it was necessary}
Kashmiri groups condemn Pakistan's 1947 invasion
As Pakistan teeters on the precipice of instability, Kashmiri groups, particularly in the UK, appear to be doing their own review of history and strategy. For the first time in 62 years, 13 Kashmiri political groups in the UK, under the umbrella of the Kashmiri National Party, passed a resolution against Pakistan's tribal invasion into India in October 1947. Kashmiri representatives said the tribal invasion was designed to force the maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir to join Pakistan.

Indian soldier injured in firing across LoC
Sat, 24 Oct 2009 at 16:35 IST

Jammu: An Indian Army soldier was injured in firing from across the Line of Control (LoC) which divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan, military officials said Saturday.
The incident took place at Kranti post in Poonch sector, about 200 km northwest of Jammu.

Official sources said that in violation of ceasefire a sudden burst of fire from across the LoC left a soldier of 28 Grenadiers injured.

Indian troops retaliated and the exchange of fire lasted for half an hour.

The Indian Army believes that these incidents of firing from Pakistani side of the LoC are meant to facilitate infiltration of militants into Kashmir.

Thank god we retaliated this time around instead of "lodging a strong protest/calling a flag meeting"

Three militants killed in J&K encounter
26 Oct 2009, 1351 hrs IST, AGENCIES
Three Hizbul Mujahideen militants, including two self-styled commanders, were killed in a gunbattle which broke out between the ultras and security forces in Shopian district of south Kashmir on Monday (October 26).

Police assisted by security forces cordoned off Naspora-Keller, 70 kms from the area, this morning to flush out the militants, a police spokesman said.

Finding themselves trapped, the militants opened fire at the security force personnel, who retaliated, he said, adding in the ensuing gunbattle the trio were killed. Identity of the slain militants was being ascertained.

Earlier, tailing pro-Pakistani separtist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani helped Jammu and Kashmir Police in nabbing the most dreaded Hizbul Mujahideen militant Abdul Aziz Dar alias General Moosa from Srinagar city on Saturday.

Dar, popularly known as Gen Moosa among the separatists, had been on the run since last year after he was found actively involved in anti-national agitations and later allegedly indulged in liaising between Geelani and Hizbul Mujahideen, sources said.

Arrested twice in 1990's when he was the divisional commander of banned Hizbul Mujahideen, Dar was released by the courts after which he was coordinating with Geelani and carrying out his orders, they said.

The sequence of events leading to Moosa's arrest began this afternoon when Geelani was shadowed by policemen in plain clothes, the sources said.

They said suspicion arose when Geelani decided to travel to Court Road in the city at an "unusual" time. The separatist leader was followed by policemen who spotted a man emerging out of a shop.

One of the policemen identified him as Moosa who immediately bundled him into a van and arrested him, leaving Geelani dazed over the developments.

A senior police official said in a lighter vein that it was with the help of Geelani that the police could nab the militant.
Geela-nahi would have had a sound sleep after that incident for sure.

Why exactly was this guy released after arrest twice though, I hope we don't let him off this time

All these people have a fascination for historic events and prophets/people associated with them. Moosa is a reference to Prophet Moses. Maj. Akbar Khan, in 1947, called himself Gen. Tareq.

Thank god we didn't loose any brave soldiers this time around...seems to be change in tactics after unnecessarily loosing a major last time around and hue and cry associated with it...

Why was the scum arrested? Shouldn't he have been shot in front of Geelani "sahib" to show who is boss?

Wouldn't it be nice if the word was spread that Geelani led the policemen to this Moosa dude? Otherwise why did he go during an "unusual" time, and surely he would be aware that plainclothes police follow him.
