DECEMBER 9, 2009 Pakistan Leader Faces Court Test, Militant Attacks
By ZAHID HUSSAIN, Wall Street Journal, Dec 9, 2009

ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari holds $1.5 billion in assets across the world, Pakistan's main anticorruption body alleged in a report delivered Tuesday to the country's Supreme Court.

The court is considering the constitutionality of an amnesty protecting the embattled leader and thousands of other officials from corruption charges. The National Accountability Bureau, a politically independent government investigative body, gave the court a list of allegations involving Mr. Zardari, following a request by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry.

Mr. Zardari's spokesman denied the allegations and said the asset list was inaccurate and fabricated to victimize Mr. Zardari.

"Reports of $1.5 billion of national and foreign assets allegedly belonging to President Zardari are no more than a regurgitation of decade-old unproven politically motivated allegations," said Farhatullah Babar, the chief spokesman for the president.

Family members in Lahore, Pakistan, on Tuesday mourn victims of Monday's attacks. President Zardari said the government remains undeterred.
The court will also consider whether a presidential immunity provided by the constitution applies to cases of alleged corruption that took place before Mr. Zardari took office last year.

The hearings could open the way for challenges to the legality of Mr. Zardari's presidency, constitutional law experts said. That would add further tension in Pakistan at a time when the U.S. ally has been hit by a series of militant attacks across country.

On Tuesday, suspected Islamist militants launched a gun, rocket and suicide attack on an intelligence office in the central Pakistan city of Multan, killing 12 people. The raid came a day after twin bombings at a market in the eastern city of Lahore killed 49.

Tuesday's attack ripped the facades off several buildings in a part of the town largely reserved for government and security agencies. Also damaged was a building housing an office of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency.

The National Accountability Bureau alleged that Mr. Zardari accumulated wealth "beyond his means." The bureau said Mr. Zardari owned properties and bank accounts in the U.S., U.K., Spain and several other countries.

This wealth was largely accumulated while his wife, Benazir Bhutto, was serving as prime minister in the 1990s, investigators said. They alleged the money had come from kickbacks and commissions on government deals.

Mr. Zardari spent a total of 11 years in jail in Pakistan while facing trial for corruption and murder charges. He was released on bail in 2004 and allowed to leave the country.

Six cases against him remained open, relating to alleged corruption. Those charges were dropped under an amnesty enforced in October 2007.

The amnesty, which was brokered by the U.S. and U.K., was introduced through a decree by former President Pervez Musharraf under a deal that paved the way for Ms. Bhutto to return home from self-imposed exile.
Ms. Bhutto was assassinated two months later, leaving Mr. Zardari to lead her party to victory in general elections in February 2008 and then become president after Gen. Musharraf resigned in August 2008.

A 17-member bench of the Supreme Court on Monday began hearing appeals by two political opponents of Mr. Zardari against the amnesty, which expired on Nov. 28 when an effort to renew it failed in Parliament.

The anticorruption body's report said Mr. Zardari had bought properties in the U.S., Britain, Spain, France and other countries through offshore companies he owned and through frontmen, according to Retired Lt. Gen. Shahid Aziz, a former chief of the National Accountability Bureau who resigned in July 2007 to protest the termination of investigations into Mr. Zardari's activities.
In the largest single payment, investigators said they had discovered a company dealing in gold in the Middle East deposited at least $10 million into an account controlled by Mr. Zardari after the Bhutto government gave the dealer a monopoly on gold imports. The money was then deposited into several bank accounts of companies owned by Mr. Zardari, investigators said. Charges in the case were dropped with the amnesty in 2007, and the gold dealer denied wrongdoing.

Americans Detained in Pakistan
Associated Press
ISLAMABAD -- Pakistani police said they arrested five U.S. citizens Wednesday in a raid in the east of the country, but declined to give a reason for the detentions.

The men were picked up at a house in Sarghoda in Punjab province, police officer Tahir Gujjar said. He said three of the men are of Pakistani descent, one is of Egyptian descent and the other is of Yemeni heritage.

U.S. Embassy spokesman Rick Snelsire said officials there were aware of the reported arrests, but could not confirm them. A report on the Web site of the Pakistani newspaper The News said one only one of the men was American.

Quoting a senior police officer, the report said it "was quite a possibility that they (the five men) were engaged in acts of terrorism."

There have to be a few david headley types on the loose in the US and in ouirope and also in India. In addition to several sympathizers and "sleeper cells" - essentially paki students who've gone there for higher studies.
In UQ, there must be several fanatic young men of Pakistani / POK descent who would form the base where future bad guys would arise from.

5 Americans detained in Pakistan raid
SLAMABAD – Pakistani police on Wednesday arrested five American men believed to have gone missing from the Washington, D.C. area last month, officials from both countries said. U.S. officials say one of the missing students left what investigators call a farewell video saying Muslims must be defended.
The men were picked up in a raid on a house in Sarghoda in the eastern province of Punjab, police officer Tahir Gujjar said, adding that three of the men are of Pakistani descent, one is of Egyptian descent and the other is of Yemeni heritage.
... The FBI has been searching for the men since their families reported them missing and expressed fears they may have gone to Pakistan, according to the two U.S. officials.

Packees trying to do a North Korea here. Beg-Borrow-Steal they're doing everything.

Except that one bambu from massa and they'll all run for their lives.

The Paki breed is alright with massive GUBO as long as it is done in semi-private. I guess massa's men on the ground will have to lay low for a few days before they can be back to doing what they are doing.

I posted a Track II summary by Lt Gen. Ashok Mehta in the Af-pak thread. The relevant portion to above action is the Baloch TII guy was sorely miffed at the handling by TSP of Baloch affairs and economic exploitation. So what Gilani is doing is returning money and restoring H&D.

I think this is part of the regional plan that US has in mind. It includes Kashmir.

Having said that, IMHO, all this wil be for naught if the PA/ISI combo remain in tact. Even for the US.

Pakistan CANNOT have an exportable religious plan hiding some place.

Imran offers to mediate between govt and Taliban

Thursday, December 10, 2009
By Mumtaz Alvi

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, who lost one of his close relatives — Major General Omar Bilal in the Masjid attack in Rawalpindi, on Wednesday offered to conditionally mediate between the government and the Taliban leadership on restoration of peace.

In his first news conference in Islamabad after recovering from last month’s surgery, Imran said that now that the US and Afghan President Hamid Karzai had asked for talks with Taliban, it was time for Pakistan to stop relying solely on the military solution.

The PTI chairman explained he was making the mediation offer as the present security situation was unacceptable, and if allowed to continue, it would ruin Pakistan. “Our internal security, our economy, our federation, even our survival is under threat due to our involvement in someone else’s war. Therefore, it is time for us to wake up and resolve to save Pakistan,” he emphasised.

In case the government gave him the mandate, he was willing to travel to the tribal areas and elsewhere to negotiate peace under the ambit of 1973 Constitution. “My mediation offer has only a condition that the government will not undermine my peace efforts under US pressure,” Imran said.

Imran pointed out that once a peace agreement was reached between the two sides, it could be presented before the parliament for its ratification. He said the objective of dialogue would be to isolate the terrorists from the tribal people’s majority.

The PTI chairman proposed the summoning of an all parties conference on the information that the US was planning more drone attacks inside Pakistan. Imran explained there were five types of militants operating under the garb of Taliban including foreign militants, foreign-backed militants and criminal elements involved in abduction and robberies. He warned this number was increasing due to the massive unemployment and poverty in the NWFP and Fata.

Missing links in Pakistan’s 26/11 probe stoke suspicions
Emerging evidence that Pakistani-American jihadist David Headley and his Lahore-based handler Sajid Mir helped organise last year’s carnage in Mumbai has cast serious doubt on the integrity of Islamabad’s investigation of the attack. { :lol: :roll: }

In February this year, Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency held three key Lashkar operatives, who it said were the key architects of the Mumbai strike.

Lashkar military commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, his deputy Mazhar Iqbal, long known in India by the alias Abu al-Qama, and Abdul Wajid, who the FIA says used the code-name Zarar Shah, are now facing trial on charges of “planning, preparation, [and] execution of [the] Mumbai terrorist attacks.”

But despite holding the three key Lashkar commanders in its custody, the FIA cast no light on the Headley-Mir reconnaissance operation.

The failure, Indian investigators allege, is part of a pattern of less-than-transparent conduct.

For example, the FIA has failed to conduct forensic tests which would establish whether Wajid is, in fact, among the men who guided the assault through calls through a voice-over-Internet phone service. Nor has it responded to requests for photographs of Wajid, which would allow Indian investigators to corroborate the Lashkar commander’s identity by interviewing jailed jihadists who have met him.

FIA detectives also appear to have left gaps in the evidence linking low-level operatives with top commanders.

In a dossier submitted to India this summer, the FIA said Lashkar office-bearers transferred funds “for terrorist activities and operations in Mumbai.” But the dossier is silent on who they were.

None of those involved in training the Lashkar assault team has been identified. Key among them is Muzammil Bhat, who allegedly supervised the assault team’s training and remained in constant communication with them through the attack.

Pakistan claims Bhat — also known by the names Yusuf and Mohammad Muzammil — evaded a December 2008 raid on a Lashkar camp in Pakistan-administered Kashmir (see graphic).

Earlier this month, though, Canadian journalists Adnan Khan and Michael Petrou reported that they had sighted the Lashkar commander after successfully infiltrating a new Lashkar base at Dulai.

Finally, Pakistan’s investigators have also succeeded in identifying just two members of the assault team itself: Amir’s partner Imran Babar and Vehari district resident Mohammad Altaf.

Escalate and expand ---- Asif Ezdi
That is the bottom line of the new Afghanistan strategy. The rest is mostly either salesmanship to make it palatable to an increasingly skeptical home constituency or a combination of sticks and carrots to win the cooperation of Pakistan. The threat of sticks is immediate, while the carrots – the offer of a long-term bilateral “partnership” and the possibility of a more active role in promoting a resolution of Kashmir – are for the future. US involvement in Kashmir, moreover, would be unhelpful to the cause of azadi, because Washington favours a settlement which legitimises the Indian occupation of Kashmir in return for some cosmetic concessions.
Pakistan should now make it clear that it would take the offer of strategic partnership seriously only if it includes access to civilian nuclear cooperation on the same terms as those given to India. This should have been spelled out in the reply sent by Zardari to Obama’s letter. The issue should now be taken up by the prime minister in a letter to Obama and brought to the forefront of the bilateral agenda with Washington.

But we should stop requesting US involvement in a resolution of Kashmir, because any such intervention at the present time would be for a settlement on the lines of the deal that Musharraf was negotiating with Manmohan Singh and which would have legalised India’s occupation of the state.

Evidence against India not enough : Qureshi :((
“The possibility that there are elements who want to destabilise the country cannot be ruled out. But information received by us in this regard, is insufficient. We need more information and material to plausibly argue our case,” Qureshi told reporters. Earlier, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said evidence of India’s involvement in destabilising Pakistan had been handed over to the Foreign Office.
“Pakistan has concrete evidence of India’s involvement in fomenting unrest in Pakistan and the evidence has been provided to the Foreign Office to take it up with New Delhi,” Malik told reporters at the Parliament House. staff report/app

Native Orientalists at the Daily Times ---- M. Shalid Alam
A few days back, I received a ‘Dear friends’ email from Mr. Najam Sethi, ex editor-in-chief of Daily Times, Pakistan, announcing that he, together with several of his colleagues, had resigned from their positions in the newspaper.

In his email, Mr. Sethi thanked his ‘friends’ for their “support and encouragement…in making Daily Times a ‘new voice for a new Pakistan.’” Wistfully, he added, “I hope it will be able to live up to your expectations and mine in time to come.”

I am not sure why Mr. Sethi had chosen me for this dubious honor. Certainly, I did not deserve it. I could not count myself among his ‘friends’ who had given “support and encouragement” to the mission that DT had chosen for itself in Pakistan’s media and politics.
Did'nt know Jihadi Sethi also left DT, I thought it was only Toilet Joker. :-?

The lighter side of being a paki: Bhai or chacha? You decide.

Chacha Shahbaz Sharif!
LAHORE: Balochistan Chief Minister Aslam Khan Raisani on Wednesday mentioned his Punjab counterpart Shahbaz Sharif with great affection in his speech, referring to him as his chacha (uncle). He said Shahbaz called him his brother and he also considered the Punjab chief minister his brother as well. “But being a close friend of my father, Shahbaz is also my uncle, therefore, I can call him uncle (chacha) Shahbaz Sharif,” the Balochistan chief minister said. staff report
All in the family. So if his chacha is also his bhai , that would make his father....?

Shiv saar, this one may be for your piskology books. I have observed that the MSM English media in India always writes as if it is some kind of a third party - but more specifically as if the journo (or what passes for the purveyor of printed material on toilet paper) is a citizen of America/England or both. He/she writes from a western viewpoint as if India is some third world country that he/she has been, unfortunately, asked to cover. Some sort of boot camp from where they will be rescued sooner or later. Misaal ke taur par (for example)

http://www.ndtv.com/news/world/indias_c ... _draft.php
Amid raging controversy over leaked draft by the Danish government, emerging economies like India, China, Brazil and South Africa came up with a counter draft which ostensibly takes into consideration the interests of the developing countries.
Would an Indian characterize India's response with an 'ostensibly'?

The same ndtv idiots have given the headley story in the 'world' section - as if headley is messing around with some third-world country that ndtv barely remembers the name of.

In the praveen swamy story quoted by you, there is this nugget:
The failure, Indian investigators allege, is part of a pattern of less-than-transparent conduct.
Now, would an Indian write like this? Obviously a western, allegedly unbiased journo may be expected to write like this.

All these english-media jokers are brown sahibs.

That may be so. But the veneer of neutrality/objectivity/respectability can be a 2-edged sword. Its OK perhaps to seem neutral now and then as long as the limits of neutrality are well recognised.

Of course, egregious media entities like chindu and undee-tv are another story altogether.

Hitlers funny reaction about Pakistan army losing kargil war against Indian armed forces. All scripts are taken from original news and incidents.

The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil conflict was an armed conflict between India and Pakistan that took place between May and July 1999 in the Kargil district of Kashmir and elsewhere along the Line of Control. The cause of the war was the infiltration of Pakistani soldiers and Kashmiri militants into positions on the Indian side of the Line of Control (LOC) which serves as the de facto border between the two states. During the initial stages of the war, Pakistan blamed the fighting entirely on independent Kashmiri insurgents, but documents left behind by casualties and later statements by Pakistan's Prime Minister and Chief of Army Staff showed involvement of Pakistani paramilitary forces led by General Ashraf Rashid. The Indian Army, later on supported by the Indian Air Force, recaptured a majority of the positions on the Indian side of the LoC infiltrated by the Pakistani troops and millitants. With international diplomatic support, the Pakistani forces were forced to withdraw from Indian positions along the LOC.

The war is one of the most recent examples of high altitude warfare in mountainous terrain, which posed significant logistical problems for the combating sides. This was only the second direct ground war between any two countries after they had developed nuclear weapons, after the Sino-Soviet border conflict of 1969; it is also the most recent. (India and Pakistan both test-detonated fission devices in May 1998, though the first Indian nuclear test was conducted in 1974.) The conflict led to heightened tension between the two nations and increased defence spending by India

How to Mend Fences With Pakistan

By Asif Ali Zardari

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/10/opini ... rdari.html
Public mistrust of the United States also stems from regional issues, specifically policies concerning India. I know it is the conventional wisdom in Washington that my nation is obsessed with India. But even to those of us who are striving toward accommodation and peace, the long history and the unresolved situation in Kashmir give Pakistanis reason to be concerned about our neighbor to the east. Just as the Israeli-Palestinian dispute cannot be resolved without accommodating the Palestinian people, there cannot be permanent regional peace in South Asia without addressing Kashmir.

The recent upset in Pakistan over the Kerry-Lugar legislation, which President Obama signed into law and which requires the secretary of state to report to Congress on military and civil progress in Pakistan, shows how sensitive many here are to what they see as unfair treatment by the United States. It would be helpful if the United States, at some point, would scrutinize India in a similar fashion and acknowledge that it has from time to time played a destabilizing role in the region.

^^^^^ A substantial portion of the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan’s prescription to mend fences is for the US to gang up with the Islamic Republic to nobble India  .

Besides the excerpt posted by you, here is another in which India figures:
Although we certainly appreciate America’s $7.5 billion pledge over the next five years for nonmilitary projects in Pakistan, this long-term commitment must be complemented by short-term policies that demonstrate American neutrality and willingness to help India and Pakistan overcome their mutual distrust. It could start by stepping up its efforts to mediate the Kashmir dispute. .............................

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan’s paranoia on full display:
Pakistan attacks: Officials feed suspicion that India, US are to blame

Pakistan officials are blaming 'foreign elements' – India and the US – for a recent spate of deadly attacks on civilians in a bid to shift responsibility, security analysts say.

By Issam Ahmed | Correspondent of The Christian Science Monitor

Lahore, Pakistan - A fresh wave of terror attacks that has killed more than 100 people across Pakistan in the past few days is fueling conspiracy theories that the United States and India are behind the violence, and officials are stoking the popular perception. ......................

Analysts say government officials are blaming recent attacks on a "foreign hand" (usually a euphemism for regional rival India) in an effort to shift attention from their inability to provide adequate security.

Monday's attacks on the eastern city of Lahore and the northwestern city of Peshawar were blamed on "foreign elements" by Punjab Province's law minister, Rana Sanaullah, and the North West Frontier Province's senior minister, Bashir Ahmed Bilour, respectively. ................................

According to security analyst Hassan Askari-Rizvi, the idea that India may be behind the terror attacks is "a very widely shared perception, but there's hardly any evidence to substantiate that. They [the militants] have attacked civilians in the past. I think the government consciously creates that confusion."

"It is easy to communicate [this idea to] people who are already somehow convinced because of religious arguments that everyone is against Pakistan because we're the only Muslim nuclear power," says Mr. Askari-Rizvi. "This is a faith-based argument, not an argument based on reason."

That view is shared by Badar Alam, a senior editor at Herald magazine, a leading Pakistani monthly.

"Both the intelligentsia and the government are behind the latest trend [of blaming India] because it absolves them of responsibility of doing anything to stop it," he says. ........................
