Need post flight analysis.Bhadrak (Orissa), Feb 7 : India Sunday tested its indigenous long-range nuclear- capable Agni-III missile, catapulting the country into a select group of nations that have intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM)-capability, defence sources said.
The 3,000-km range missile, which is capable of carrying warheads weighing up to 1.5 tonnes, was tested from the Inner Wheeler Island at Dhamra, a launch site in Bhadrak district, about 200 km from Orissa capital Bhubaneswar, at 10.46 a.m.
This is the fourth test of the missile. The first test, from the same defence base on July 9, 2006, was unsuccessful. The second stage of the rocket had failed to separate from themissile quickly enough and the missile had fallen short of its target.
The DRDO-developed missile was tested again on April 12, 2007, and May 9, 2008, respectively and both the tests were successful.
Agni-III, one of the Agni series missiles, is a two-stage solid propellant missile with a length of 17 mt, diameter 2 mt and launch weight of 50 tonnes.
While Agni-I is a 750-800 km short-range missile, Agni-II has a range of more than 1,500 km. Both have already been inducted into the armed forces.

If so, why this statement of getting catapulted into nations having IRBM capability as if we weren't in it already?
Surely, even the inducted A-II is a IRBM or has it been put in a cloud after recent user failures?

Wiki says that the final test is scheduled in Oct 2009 (which got postponed until now). I guess that may explain the statement a bit. Gurus can add more on this.

Induction is expected to be in 2012, further testing will be required.
may 1 or 2 more because once the system is tested then it will be handed over to BDL for commercial production. We need to plan for a road map as to how many missiles are required.
Order will have to given to BDL based on the clearance from the CCS. So more of a planning and technology transfer will mean we can induct it only in 2012.

once A-5 gets tested with the canister, the A-3 will as well and probably will be included during user testing/training of A-3

I think A3 will not see full induction into the Strategic forces. It might see limited induction in a LSP mode as an interim measure.. When A-5 is tested 4-5times successfully it will enter large scale induction.. and, i think, slowly A-1,2,3 will be pahsed out..
Even though A-1,2,3 are road/rail mobile - the key difference with A-5 is it is to be a canisterized missile.. which means a lot more flexibility in terms of mobility, maintainence, logistics & survivability.. and easier to deploy onboards SSBN's.
So the canisterised missiles (and their submarine versions) will take over.. A-5 being China-centric and the Shourya being Paki-centric..

Probably ASL could itself integrate the first few missiles as carefully as it did to the test articles and hand them to the forces to begin IOC. Beyond that, production has to shift to BDL or some such entity. This requires training new teams to produce this missile. Given this, repeated testing must occur after LSP to ensure production quality-about 5-6 trials after IOC. This is the mistake they made with A-II: not following up developmental trials with production trials (necessary for these complex systems). Hope that mistake does not happen with A-3. At least, with A-3, we have had tests in 2006,2007,2008,2010. In the A-2 case, that process was itself a little slower 1999, 2001 and 2004.
Rather than leaving things half done, A-3 must be put into production. If we wait for A-5, it is a wait for at least 4 more years for development tests to complete. Given the precarious situation we are in, time is critical. Of course, A-5 development should continue apace with A-3 and A-5 togethr becoming the mainstay of the land based strategic forces

indeed. we cannot wait for cansisterized A5 which is 7 yrs away from IOC surely (5 yrs test pgm, 2 user of user-trials and production start). for deterrence to be kept up we need a good mix of A2 and A3 in interim which can serve for 15 yrs until A5 units replace them

warhead of same weight instead. I am sure the OPV sent to target zone must have taken

The Navigation system used for guidance is first of its kind. Number of Radars and electro optical tracking systems along the coast of Odisha have monitored the path of the Missile and evaluated all the parameters in realtime.
The launch is part of the pre-induction trial. Indian Army (the user) has carried out the total launch operations guided by the DRDO scientists. Now the Missile system will be fully inducted into the armed forces.
Mission Director Sri Avinash Chander and Project Director Dr V.G. Sekaran have guided and controlled the complete Missile integration and launch activities. Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri and Director General, DRDO Dr V.K. Saraswat has over seen the total launch operations.

Intended to be a two-stage ballistic missile capable of nuclear weapons delivery, it is touted as India’s nuclear deterrent against China. The missile is likely to support a wide range of warhead configurations, with a 3,500 km range and a total payload weight of 2490 kg. The two-stage solid fuel missile is compact and small enough for easy mobility and flexible deployment on various surface/sub-surface platforms. The last development test of Agni III was conducted in August 2009 before being handed over to the army for user trails.
Infact ,I dont think the India rests far behind the west/russia in propellant technology.while comparing the similar specifications of western and russian missiles,the above link makes me trust it

probably they will wait until the first test flight of A-5 that is canister launched to make any changes to the A-3 before its production starts, further user trials will keep validating 'minor risks'
do gurus here know if A-3,5 is used to launch a mil sat to LEO, what could be the throw weight and does that change significantly based on the launch position?

smaller missiles can be used as ASAT weapons, it could very well be a enhanced sounding rocket or a brother of upcoming PDV
A-3 carries one warhead, A-5 will be MIRVed, while pragmatic China will think about even one warhead

I think Agni-IV will be Agni-SLBM based on Agni-III. I hope that is tested as soon as arihant is ready and inducted.
