Pakistan Army Cobra crashes
Two military men killed in Tirah copter crash
Updated at: 1425 PST, Wednesday, February 10, 2010
PESHAWAR: Pakistani army officials said one of their helicopter gunships has crashed near the Afghan border and two people are dead.

Pakistani army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas says the Cobra helicopter went down Wednesday in the Teera Valley in Pakistan's Khyber tribal area.

Another army official said the helicopter's pilot and gunner lost their lives in the incident. He said the crash appeared to have been caused by either bad weather or a mechanical failure.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

Pak Looking Upto US to Match India's Military Might: Haqqani
Pakistan is looking up to the US to help it match India's plans to spend USD 100 billion on weapons systems in the coming years to modernise its military, the country's Ambassador to the US Hussain Haqqani told a group of journalists at the Governor's House at Lahore late last night.

He said Pakistan has also started negotiating with the US for an agreement on nuclear technology on the lines of the deal Washington had signed with India and others.

"India is our main concern as it is buying weapons worth USD 100 billion from five countries and to balance this, we will have to depend on the US. India has 5,500 tanks and there is a question against whom they will be used," Haqqani

"We cannot be assured by statements from the other side of the border that India will not wage a war against us," the diplomat said.

Pakistan will get another batch of 16 F-16 fighter aircrafts in June, Haqqani said.

On nuclear technology, he said: "The US is not sceptical about our nuclear programme. The talks between Pakistan and the US for cooperation on the atomic programmes are underway.

"And we want the US to have an agreement with us like the one it had with India on civil nuclear technology."

The recent scope of Pakistani acquisitions is pretty impressive and shocking at the same time considering that they are close to bankruptcy and heavily in debt. It is a testament to their fanaticism and their dogged determination. India should launch a full diplomatic and lobbying offensive to curb American military aid to Pakistan. Surprisingly, India isn't doing too much on this front while China issues "warnings" on a regular basis to all and sundry against the Dalai Lama and backs up those warning with economic punishment. Right now, they gets weapons for charity, much like Israel usually does when it is fighting the Arabs. This situation should be made unacceptable with deft lobbying and a PR campaign with the American populace, especially the liberal academics from Georgetown and DC who lurk the think tanks and write opinion pieces.

^^ WRONG Analogy!!!
Israel DOES NOT send Terrorists across borders to cause mayhem! It is the Victim, who RETALIATES with a BANG!!!
Pakistan SENDS terrorists ACROSS the border and is NOT the victim... (you might well counter this with the recent NWP terrorists and the Taliban in the FATA regions, but that is because of Paki's own Vested intersts)...
Getting Free weapons and BUYING weapons is a big dfference. Israle Purchases weapons from the US, unlike Pakis who usually get's it free, with Billions more in Aid to fight the Taliban!!!

Pakis and wet dreams!!!!

I like that. I am not too sure why Pakis even negotiate with the US. All they have to do is change the last name of 10,000 guys a year to Mesud. Done. Every 10K change gets them a F-22.

So the Pakistan's ultimate fighter is a distant dream.
It will take another 6-7 years to sign the deal as the j-10B is not going to enter service anytime soon. Article also tells China's not so friendly nature towards Pak as the decision is pending due to financial reason. Why aren't the Chinis gifting the aircraft like Americans or atleast providing a line of credit?

Pakistan inducts multi-role jets developed jointly with China
PAF chief Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman was the chief guest at the event.

“We are a peaceful nation with no aggressive designs and want to maintain peace with honour in our region." {Why did he miss the 'dignity' word ?}

Officials said JF-17 Thunder had the ability to “undertake the entire spectrum of offensive and defensive missions”. The jets would form the PAF's backbone, they said.

The JF-17, which has a maximum speed of Mach 1.6 and is designed to carry short and long-range air-to-air missiles, will replace the PAF's ageing A-5, F-7P and Mirage jets.

The PAF currently has about 10 JF-17 jets that were built in China.

Another 40 jets will be built at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex under an agreement signed with China last year.

And that will be the total production run of this aircraft. Because after this money will be due to the chinese for the next batch. And everyone knows that the Pakistanis don't have the money.

French JF-17 Deal Could Anger India

Feb 19, 2010

By Michael A. Taverna
Paris

Politics could yet derail French industry aspirations to upgrade Pakistan’s JF-17 fighter aircraft, even as the two sides near conclusion of a deal for the program.

While the project is supported by the administration of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, reactions in New Delhi and Washington will also influence its fate . The U.S. is concerned about technology leakage to China, and India is already a lucrative market for French industry. Enthusiasm for the JF-17 upgrade could be tempered if there were signals that this might jeopardize business in India.

The Pakistan air force wants to develop a “Westernized” version of its Chinese-made JF-17, fitted with European avionics, fire-control radar and weapons systems. The upgraded aircraft is intended not only for domestic service, but also for export.

A team led by ATE—a Paris-based company specializing in integrating systems and weapons onto military aircraft airframes of different origin—is tipped to develop and market the upgraded version of the JF-17 Thunder. The aircraft was developed by China in cooperation with Pakistan.

Other partners, according to sources close to the deal, include Thales, Sagem and missile-manufacturer MBDA. Among the losing bidders, they say, are Astrac, a Thales-Sagem joint venture also specialized in retrofits, and Finmeccanica. The winning team would not comment on the selection, which has not been officially announced.

Industry executives say the project has strong backing from the French government, which has adopted a more focused and muscular arms trade policy under the Sarkozy administration ....................

From a letter in Daily Times
Sir: Currently, there are seven mega military garrisons, 52 paramilitary cantonments and four naval bases, including Jinnah naval base, in Ormara. Also, there are missile-testing ranges and two nuclear development and testing sites in the province.

The militarisation of Balochistan continues unabated. The federal government has been using regular troops and paramilitary forces for ‘strengthening the federation’. The region has been highly militarised, as the military establishment is diverting social and economic capital on more and more military and naval development.

The most worrying thing about the construction of another naval base in Balochistan is the grave impact it will have on the environment and politics of Balochistan. The new naval base is under construction in an area known as Kalmat. Khor Kalmat is a lagoon.

The Pakistani government has decided to build a naval base in the region of Gwadar known as Kalmat Chundi Hore. It has been decided that 30,000 acres of land in the said region have been included in the map of the naval base. . . .

A Perry for Pakistan: USS McInerney
On Feb 19/10, the US DSCA announced Pakistan’s official request to buy the Oliver Hazard Perry Class frigate USS McInerney [FFG 8], plus refurbishment, onboard spares, spare and repairs parts, support equipment, publications and technical data, and U.S. Government and contractor support.
Oliver Hazard Perry Class frigates still serve with the US Navy, but American ships have had their bow-mounted Mk.13 launch systems for SM-1 Standard air defense and RGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles removed. Those changes leave just torpedoes and a 76mm naval gun for offense, and the 20mm Phalanx CIWS as the ships’ main defensive weapon. Barring further contracts, the dollar amounts and lack of contractor assistance strongly suggest that McInerney is being transferred to Pakistan “as is.”
Below text quoted from globalsecurity.org:
Frigates fulfill a Protection of Shipping (POS) mission as Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) combatants for amphibious expeditionary forces, underway replenishment groups and merchant convoys. The addition of NTDS, LAMPS helicopters, and the Tactical Towed Array System (TACTAS) has given these ships a combat capability far beyond the class program expectations of the mid-1970's, and has made the ships an integral and valued asset in virtually any war-at-sea scenario and particularly well suited for operation in the littoral.

The ship is being purchased without some of its more formidable weapon systems probably means that the PN will have to source ASW systems from elsewhere if this is going to be a potent platform. Maybe the Pakis think they can upgrade these frigates like the Aussies, except with Chinese assistance.

They will try to standardize on the Z9 and C-802's (or maybe Harpoon's 124 km range) and the FM-90 SAM's. Unkil won't give any SM-2's or RAM's.

From wikipedia
...The weapons and systems on the PN FFG-7 have not yet been disclosed, but they could include the Mk 41 Vertical Launch System for the Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) as well as Mk 32 torpedo tubes for Mk 46 Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) torpedoes...
Looks like some pakdef idiot assumed the McInerney would include the same systems found on Australia's Adelaide class. Unfortunately, since the USS McInerney is transferred "as is" it may not have any of those things when its inducted .

On a side note, if the PN upgraded the McInerney to the Adelaide's standards I think it cost them at least as much as the Australians paid, or $360 million per ship. Its unclear to me why PN still wants this deal since the frigate is more expensive and less capable than the supposedly equivalent the Chinese F22P (based on paper specs). Maybe Chinese technology is unreliable, maybe there is some technology on this ship that Chinese haven't been able to replicate, or maybe the Pakis have even more obsession with Amrikan maal than previously thought...who knows?

42 Terror Camps Still Active in Pak: Antony Concerned
India today said 42 terror camps are "still active" in Pakistan and that lack of a serious attempt or effort by that country to dismantle them is the "main cause of concern for us."

Defence Minister A K Antony also said India did not expect a "miracle" from the resumption of Indo-Pak talks which concluded recently at the Foreign Secretary-level here noting it was just a beginning
................

"We took a considered decision on holding FS-level talks with Pakistan. We were not expecting miracles from the talks. It was just a beginning," Antony told reporters here when asked if the talks had failed as Pakistan did not agree on checking terror activities against India from its soil.

The Defence Minister also made light of the recent threat by Jamaat-ud-Dawa(JuD) Chief Hafiz Saaed against India.

"I would like to assure the nation that it is safe. Every inch of our land will be protected. We are not worried about any threat from any quarter. Our armed forces are prepared 24/7 around the year to tackle any threat from any quarter but at the same time we are not war-mongers," he said.

US to share laser-guiding bomb kits with Pakistan
WASHINGTON — The U.S. will deliver this month to Pakistan 1,000 sophisticated laser-guided bomb kits that would enable the government there to strike insurgent targets with more precision.

.....

Lt. Col. Jeffry Glenn, an Air Force spokesman, said Tuesday the U.S. had delivered 1,000 MK-82 bombs to Pakistan last month. This month's shipment of kits would enable Pakistan to use sophisticated laser technology to guide the bombs to specific targets.

Glenn said the U.S. also plans to provide Pakistan 18 new F-16 fighter jets by June.
