Geoff Morrell, the Pentagon press secretary, discounted the gap between the timelines cited by Gates and Ulman. He declined to comment on whether China had made enough progress since last July to change intelligence on the next fighter's debut. Richard Fisher, an expert on the Chinese military at the the private International Assessment and Strategy Center, said Gates' decision to end F-22 production is proving to be "potentially very wrong." "We will need more F-22s if we are going to adequately defend our interests," he said in an interview on Thursday at the hearing
To me, this just feels like a big ploy to drive hysteria to sanction or re-think F-22 purchases.. There was similar hysteria when our own Indo-Russian PAK-FA was announced..that din't work.. now use the Chinese excuse... That just doesn't seem to work in the Obama-Gates world..

Does look like a ploy to get more raptors. However, with the current momentum that the chinese have, making a 5th gen bird post 2020 is a very real possibility.

In that sense it may not be too far from the truth. An exaggeration? Maybe.

They make their borrow or steal (BS) policy work very well for them.

There is a huge gap between what the US intel agencies say and what happens, IMHO they should never be taken as a trustworthy source... All these predictions are usually deceptive
chinks may have a design in hand ,I think they are lagging in AtoA misiles and engines ...once they get these, they will fill the gaps
US intel is now creating reasons to have more f22s ,as fear of technology transfer from russia to china is there.
maybe this time they are giving right info, china will be in the league around 2020,,,while our MCA program is nowhere.

Bang on. US economy needs the production line running - for the jobs, the money more than the planes themselves.

Chinese are still lacking in plenty of areas though in terms of 5th gen technology. RCS reduction, AESA, EW apart from engines, missiles, etc. China and India are not very different in terms of capabilities in this area.

Well if US intel has any substance to it , then they will need more F-22 to maintain its air dominance if and when the Chinese 5G takes to air , but certainly they are working on it.

Not to mention PAK-FA has shows potential to be a good fighter to match up to US 5th Gen fighter and will be produced in numbers so all the more reason they would like to start the production line for F-22.

There are pressures from allies of US specially Japan , Israel to let them have some export version of F-22 , I certainly see at some point in the future US restarting its F-22 production line.

Indians training Malaysians.. and now Chinese training Indonesians..
The Indonesian and Chinese governments have agreed to increase cooperation in the training of Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) Sukhoi jet-fighter pilots, Antara news agency reported a Defence Ministry spokesman as saying Friday.

The training of the Indonesian Sukhoi jet fighters' pilots was one of the agenda items discussed between Gen Guo Boxing, deputy chairman of China's Central Commission of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), and Defence Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro here on Friday.

The Defence Ministry spokesman, Maj Gen I Wayan Medhio, said Indonesia had in several stages sent its Sukhoi pilots to train in China.

China to put up its own GPS by 2012
BEIJING: Challenging US monopoly on global positioning systems (GPS), China is set to establish its own satellite navigation system by 2012, covering the Asia-Pacific region. China will become the third country, after US and Russia (it's system is under restoration), to have its own 'sat nav', a Chinese scientist has announced.

Sun Jiadong, chief designer of the Beidou Navigation System, indicated China was ready to spend several billion dollars to put up a network of 30 new satellites in the sky.

The local government was looking for markets to sell navigational services in order to finance the project, he said.

better J15 pics here
http://china-defense.blogspot.com/2010/ ... otted.html

so looks like china is going to enter the carrier game directly with a clone/rebuild of the varyag design @ 56000t and a troop of license made Su33 with some local mods and avionics (unless they have a working and reliable engine to replace al31, there is no point outright cloning). Ru/Ukr will deny everything and allege cloning in the media, while privately accepting cash below the table.

we need to pull panties up and speed our ADS2 and SSN programs.

Checking China: 24 yrs later, ‘Op Falcon’ still awaits nod
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Indi ... 018308.cms
NEW DELHI: Here’s yet another example of the Indian defence establishment’s continuing ultra-defensive mindset over China: Almost quarter of a century after Army launched ‘Operation Falcon’ along the border in Arunachal Pradesh, the government is yet to promulgate it.

Promulgation of an operation accords it with official sanctity, as also leads to better financial and other benefits to soldiers involved in the event of casualties during its conduct. Even as India belatedly tries to counter the massive build-up of military infrastructure by China all along the 4,057-km Line of Actual Control (LAC), the Army has once again approached the defence ministry (MoD) to rectify this ‘‘embarrassing anomaly’’, sources said. MoD spokesperson Sitanshu Kar, despite repeated queries, stuck to the line that ‘‘the ministry has nothing at all to say’’ about Operation Falcon. Sources, however, said the file ‘‘was still shuttling’’ between the ministry and Army headquarters, with the former ‘‘raising queries after queries’’ to stonewall the promulgation.

A senior MoD official said, ‘‘Yes, there is reluctance to make Operation Falcon public and official by promulgating it. India and China, after all, are engaged in talks to amicably resolve the border issue.’’ China, however, continues to be aggressive about its claim over the Tawang tract in Arunchal Pradesh. Moreover, Chinese ‘‘transgressions’’ continue in all the three LAC sectors — western (Ladakh), middle (Uttarakhand, Himachal) and eastern (Sikkim, Arunachal) — to strengthen claims over disputed territories.

Operation Falcon was launched in late-1986 after the People’s Liberation Army began to make ‘‘deep intrusions’’ in the Sumdorong Chu Valley of Arunachal in June that year. Around that time, China also began to construct helipads and other permanent structures in the area to operationally sustain its troops. New Delhi did lodge formal protests with Beijing but to no avail, with the then Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping even threatening to teach India a lesson on the lines of the one taught in 1962.

Amid rising diplomatic tempers, the then Army chief General Krishnaswami Sundarji moved swiftly to air-lift an entire infantry brigade under Operation Falcon to Zimithang, a makeshift landing area close to Sumdorong Chu, to counter Chinese moves in the region. Troop reinforcements from both sides continued till about mid-1987 when diplomatic engagement finally led to cooling down of the stand-off, with even a pact to move back some border outposts of either side.

The forward deployment of troops, which began under Operation Falcon, however, still continues. It’s only in the last couple of years that India has stepped up efforts to strategically counter the Chinese build-up along the LAC.

Apart from beginning to base Sukhoi-30MKI fighters in North-East as well as upgrading airstrips and helipads, India is also raising two new specialised infantry mountain divisions (35,000 soldiers) and an artillery brigade for Arunachal Pradesh.

Russia downplays Chinese J-15 fighter capabilities
"The Chinese J-15 clone is unlikely to achieve the same performance characteristics of the Russian Su-33 carrier-based fighter, and I do not rule out the possibility that China could return to negotiations with Russia on the purchase of a substantial batch of Su-33s," said Col. (Ret.) Igor Korotchenko, a member of the Defense Ministry's Public Council.

The Su-33 is a carrier-based multi-role fighter, which can perform a variety of air superiority, fleet defense, air support and reconnaissance missions. The aircraft entered service with the Russian Navy in 1995 and are currently deployed on board the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier.
Korotchenko said China was unlikely to solve technical problems related to the design of the folding wings and to develop a reliable engine for the aircraft, although the first J-15 prototype reportedly made its maiden flight on August 31, 2009, powered by Chinese WS-10 turbofan engines.

China has got better in shiny PR stuff like every other communist and authoritarian state in last decade or so. Who doesn't like to show the good shiny stuff to the world. They even went as far to show their J-6 fighters in new paint during its retirement event.

You have got to admire the Chinese. Most people will dismiss this video as a PR stunt. But there is no doubt that if this was a video about Indian Military, each forum member would be gawking at the video at awe and writing epics in its praise. So, while it is true that it is a PR stunt, the point is that the importance of PR stunts cannot be emphasized enough. Perhaps most of the people who visit forums like BR would have the knowledge to differentiate b/n PR stunts and reality. But most people cannot. So, these stunts serve as huge Morale booster and also huge demoraliser depending upon who is watching.

Ask any of your non jingo Indian friend about his opinion regarding which Army has the best Infantry. The answer in 99.9% cases will be American Army. This is simply because an average person does not search net and books inquiring about Military history. He just sees shiny soldiers in Hollywood movies and newspapers and makes up his mind. China seems to understand this. India, on the other hand, has long way to go in this regard.

Dunno about the others but the video is pretty impressive.

The sheer numbers and types of eweapons systems on display in a single video makes it a good watch.

China builds oxygen-rich barracks for soldiers in Tibet mountains
The People's Liberation Army in China has come up with the first batch of ecological oxygen-enriched barracks for use by troops posted in the oxygen deficient mountain regions of Tibet across the Indian border. It means lesser dependence on oxygen cylinders and higher performance for soldiers, the PLA research team has reported.

This is one of the several recent innovations reported by Chinese defense establishment that include reduction in take-off time for ship-based helicopters, reorganizing the layout for multi-functional training ground in the slopes of Inner Mongolia and running digitalized medical services, according to the official media.

How thoughtful!
But I wonder what would happen to the performance of the same troops when they actually move out to operate? In a way, they would never really get acclimatized to the harsh environs.

I think the oxygen barracks would be more useful in case of casualties... helping soldiers recover faster...

In that case we already have them. There are couple High pressurised chambers in the Leh GH which simulate pressure and air content found at Sea Level.

But these are chambers... with stretchers in them and are only used for extreme situations.

These can either be to "acclimatise' new troops coming to an altitude from sea level, or to treat "mountain sickness".

By this it seems to be for normal day today living, not for sick cases. The article also mentions about oxygen cylinders being used by soldiers. This way the physical performance of soldiers would severely degrade once they are out in the open for prolonged periods without access to the artificial oxygen rich environs that they would become accustomed to, though performance during routine day to day activities on the post itself might be a notch higher (not really sure on this count though).

Or it might be just another PR stunt to showcase a growing china, aka the pretty girl with the beautiful voice in the Olympics

I think rather than PR Aspect ... this is signal from chinis to us ""that we have barracks and soldiers armed and well prepared with definite advantage in infrastructure and facilities. We shall always have upper hand as long as your lazy politicians and army heads are sleeping .. Don't you dare oppose us .. ""
