A small dent on Gori Echendee

THE Ruias-controlled Essar Steel on Monday acquired the UKbased steel processor Servosteel for an undisclosed amount, making it their first buyout in the country where the billionaire brothers listed their energy firm three months ago.

The acquisition cost for Servosteel, which has an annual processing capacity of 5,00,000 tonne, could be around $100 million (Rs 450 crore), according to steel analysts. Servosteel is based in Dudley in the West Midlands.

“Essar group seems to be very keen on consolidating its position in the UK,” said Ajay Parmar, head, institutional equities, Emkay Global Financial Services. “The demand is very low in that part of the world, however that’s for time being.” The group’s energy-arm, Essar Energy, raised $1.9 billion by selling shares in the London market in April.

According to people familiar with the steel processing industry, while demand has slowed in Europe, acquisition of such mills in the region would be viable if the plants were relocated to strong demand areas including India. Essar Group officials didn’t comment on the issue.

A steel processing unit typically processes base grade steel products such as hot-rolled and cold-rolled coils, galvanized products, into custom made products for users that could be from the auto and consumer goods sectors.

Consolidation in the European steel processing sector has been picking up mainly as mills in the region are available for buyouts. Early this month, Antwerp-based steel trader Steelforce acquired a controlling stake in Czech processor Expono for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition of Servosteel will benefit Essar Steel, which has a capacity of 8.6 million tonne. It has seven service centres in India, Indonesia and Canada with aggregate capacity of over three million tonne.

Muruganji, just one more stat, stock of UK investments in US alone, exceeds that of all Asian economies put together. As a matter of fact they are and continue to remain the single largest overseas investers/owners in the US. Total stock of US based investments alone exceeds 450+ Billion Dollars. Total overseas investments may exceed some 1,500 Billion Dollars. They may be down but UK is far from out.

What is the relationship between the value of an acquistion and the daily turnover of some stock exchange ? They have nothing to do with each other other than that they both involve money being exchanged.

Marwaris remain the single largest national invester/owners in Bharat. Their total stock of Desi investments and business is of mammoth size but Rajasthan - the marwari home country remains backward and one of the BIMARU states of Bharat.

Irony is = the wealthiest man of UKstan is a Marwari.

BTW, After the big dent on Gori Echendee after acquisition JLR by big Tata this servosteel is a small dent caused by a comparatively small company.

I am glad because US needs to freeze and liquidate some of these assets to pay for the damage caused to Louisiana by stupid British Petroleum. As a matter of fact Bobby Jindal should stop beating around the bush and join Obama and other democrats who want to make Brits pay for their shenanigans.

BP's operations in the US are largely the old Amoco business and are staffed by Americans. The decisions (in deep water) were primarily made by Americans and the hole plugging and clean up is largely being done by Americans. The company itself is very global and is merely headquartered in London with a significant second management node in Chicago. An attack on BP by the good senators and Ombaba is very politically convenient, however the harder you hit BP the harder you will hit American jobs, pension funds and... wait for it... American votes! Have you noticed how Texan senators have started toning down the rhetoric recently? Thats because all of the other big oil companies are in exactly the same literal deep water. its largely a matter of luck that it was BP who blew a gasket first instead of EXXON or Shell or... whoever

not trying to let BP off the hook, but the nature of globalisation needs to be better understood. In fact, the "British" in BP was dropped around 7-8 years ago as a conscious choice by the organisation... chosing the very silly "Beyond Petroleum" now just dropped in favour of "BP"

meanwhile in the Nigerian delta, oil companies (including American ones) have been looking the other way for decades as an oil spill several times larger than the gulf of mexico has been leaking out into the swamp lands and blighting the lives of hundreds of thousands... no one seems to give a damn about them?

elsewhere, chinese companies are outbidding Indian ones to invest in securing petroleum supplies from S. America to Africa... just wait till all that slimy goo hits the environmentalist fan!

^^^ Murugan-ji, who or what is propagating this myth?
can i offer you my personal preferences for your categories?
1. US
2. US
3. No clear leader, its all preferential, one could easily argue for Spain, China and India as well as France
4. France, India
5. US
there was a time when the UK was doing well in some of these fields, i dont think any uk natives would claim leadership in any category above anymore, indeed they have always looked up to the French in all matters civilisational, largely as a function of being ruled and conditioned by a French king since 1066 till the house of hanover took over

in 3) substitute france with italy.
4) has to be india - birthplace of 4 major religions and countless philsophers. greece would be 2nd perhaps.
2) is probably china. from 2000+ yrs ago they had royal historians and psyops gurus tasked to meticulously record each and everything, embellish things, gather artefacts etc. italy (catholic church) have also been at it for a long time now and has the advantage of a stable centralized top down org for 2000 yrs.

however, if you wind back the clock by 300 years, france would dominate most categories, 200 years the UK would be strong in most, 100 years to now is the US

so, its also a function of time and the ascendancy or otherwise of a given civilisation

I was trying to count it overall - over a period of 4000 yrs.

UK would score most heavily in modern scientific invention category - rest of it like food, drink, philosophy, religion, art are all secondary to the UKs money making mercantile nature.

Isnt technology and science "development" strongly correlated with "war"? Preparation for war, and planning war on others appears to be the primary driver of European sciences.

not sure that its cause and effect, but there are certainly connections. the desire to wage war might not spur innovation, but the need to survive one certainly does. and indeed post war when lessons are being learnt, perhaps leads to more insight. i think that the military-engineering-complex phenomenon might be a post WW1 development, seen to its zenith by the cold war. that said, napoleon did a lot to bring organised and well funded science to bear on the conduct of warfare, amongst the military specific inventions sponsored by him is tinned food.

economic growth creates the surplus resources which are devoted to more thinking, rather than surviving

the british had a good phase from the 1830's to the 1930's when they did a lot of good engineering development, then rapidly overtaken by the germans and americans

war is far more connected to economic growth/decline than any other factor

Afshan Azad (Padma Patil)

There are about 400 million copies of Harry Potter books that have been sold. The Harry Potter movies have grossed about 5.5 billion USD at the box office.

Harry Potter has perhaps the most fans in the world, probably right after Jesus and Mohammed.

If the discussion about Islam and the treatment of women flares up in the group, then some truths about the treatment of women in Islam would percolate further down into groups, who probably did not bother till today about such topics.

Some discussion going on here!

Flies love honey :P
Cameron bets future on India's meteoric rise
The current bout of Indiaphilia is a direct result of the perceived chilliness that hovered over the Labour government's relationship with India. This was largely due to David Miliband, the former Foreign Secretary, causing a diplomatic storm in 2009 when he was seen to intervene in the long-running dispute over Kashmir. The Kashmiri question is widely seen as a domestic issue in India, and his comments were deeply unwelcome. One Indian businessman said last week that Miliband's comments were the equivalent of an Indian minister telling the UK government to pull out of Northern Ireland.
But new beginnings are mainly being forged due to India's enviable economic growth. The Indian economy grew by 7.4pc over 2009, whereas the UK's contracted by 4.9pc. While the UK famously has "no money left", India is seen as the land of plenty.
India today is viewed as neither the romantic colonial playground of Kipling nor the "wounded civilisation" of V.S. Naipaul – it is a beast of an economy that every Western country is clamouring to grab a slice of.

Front page is reserved for those stupid stories/myths that Britain is funding ISRO/slums etc.
The average gora won't look in the Finance section and so the myth will contunue :(

Haresh my personal experience says that even if a gora read such a news he/she still tries to bring poverty in normal discussions. Most of them are still in denial mode and dont appreciate the changes happening in india. For them any discussion on india starts with poverty and ends with caste system. Not to forget, oh we give Indians lot of jobs attitude.

Anyway it doesnt matter whatever average gora thinks about india I dont give a hoot. As India progress many "Flies" will get attracted to us. And we should have "How to treat the flies" handbook ready for our babus.

jagga,

You are right, however they need to realise that is where the money is.
With regards to poverty etc, I have developed a reply and will post it on any future UK Net newspaper sites when the need arises. the reply is basically this.

A/ Britain ruled India for 250-300 years, if poverty was of such concern to Britain why did they not eradicate it in those 300 years?

B/ Poverty reduction is a long term programme, India has been independent since 1947.
C/ If poverty is such a serious "Moral" concern for the British people then Britain is welcome to boycott trade with India, other nations in europe will gain the contracts.

The most effective technique to argue, I have discovered, is to say the blunt truth. In this case, I would suggest to aggree that India has casteism, but express surprise that the British hated the Indian caste system, but had no problem stealing the gold of the casteists. Conversations will suddenly come to a screeching halt.

Right you are about the caste and poverty.

Recently had a visiting gori blonde bombshell of a quality manager who "apologized" to me in advance if she inadvertently hurt my caste (sic).

Man, she went on and on about the poverty until I was constrained to point out that it was her bloody ancestors who had stolen it all.

We got on quite well after that, as a matter of fact. :)

Gorons need to be educated by relating to the caste system to their own foibles. Feel free to relate it to the Christian classes of piety:protestants, catholics, Mormons, Orthodox etc. Racism is something they should be able to understand as well.

Just confirms the stereotype of the Goron:consumes vast quatities of animal parts but gags on plain, white yoghurt. :rotfl:

The dhimmification of UKstan continues unabated...

Swimmers plunged into dark after council covers swimming pool windows 'to protect Muslim women's modesty'
A council has sparked anger after officials blacked out windows on a glass-panelled swimming pool to protect the modesty of Muslim women.

Darlaston Leisure Centre in the West Midlands' town of Walsall, was hailed for its 'ultra-modern' design when it opened ten years ago.

But now council staff have covered 250 windows with dark-tinted film following complaints from Muslim swimmers.

But other users say the move has plunged the pool into almost permanent darkness and branded it 'political correctness gone stark-raving mad'.
'If it was done for a minority of people, then why was there no vote on it?'

Retired building surveyor John Ewart, 63, from Walsall, added: 'I cannot believe this council has agreed to something so loony.

'The whole thing smacks of political correctness gone stark raving mad.

'A lot of the people who swim are elderly or retired and they now have to swim in the gloom.'
'Several customers complained it made the pool dark and dingy but we didn't have a choice.'

The council initially refused to replace the windows with frosted glass because it was too expensive.

Today, the council defended the decision, saying they had 'listened to the concerns of users'.

Councillor Anthony Harris said: 'I'm pleased that we've been able to make these modifications because not only does it show we're listening to the views and concerns of our users but also because it enhances the privacy of swimmers.'

A spokeswoman for Walsall Council said the complaints had predominantly come from the Muslim community but that non-Muslim women had also objected.

She said: 'We received a request from the Muslim Community to protect the modesty of swimmers.

'There were also requests made by some non-Muslim users as well.Equal equal onlee
