BAE pushes for EF, reiterates TOT promise..

BAE presses technology-transfer track record in Indian Typhoon campaign
Alan Garwood, business director of BAE - which along with Alenia Aeronautica and EADS is pitching the Typhoon for the MMRCA deal - says the consortium's preparedness to meet India's stipulations on technology transfer "absolutely distinguish" its bid. BAE Systems, he notes, has had a presence in India "for some 50-60 years" and, with partners, has built "around 1,000 aircraft" there, a track record he considers "unique among the competitors".

Garwood declares himself "very pleased" with the performance of the Typhoon in flying evaluations, while acknowledging that "it's what the Indian air force think that counts". Declining to speculate on the likely timescale for a decision by the air force, he notes: "They're playing this as an absolutely straight-bat competition."

True, the very best of the 4+ gen fighters. But the next decade belongs to fighters and UCAVs with advanced stealth., and american fighters that may well incorporate visible stealth .Only with appropriate sensors can these super variants deal with such technologies.Since we do not have an accurate assessment of Chinese stealth technologies, it is best to plan for such an eventuality.

The fact that you cant even post a logical rejoinder to the clear weaknesses of the Gripen NG shows that the truth may have got your undies in a bunch but there's precious little you can do about it.

Heck, its overall weaknesses apart, most of the other MRCA contenders either have demonstrated capabilities (eg AESA on the F-16, F-18, and now even the Rafale) or export sales for variants similar to what the IAF will procure (eg Typhoon bar the Captor-E, F-16, F-18). The Gripen has neither & the Indian AF has to rely on presentation skills to believe all will be well. Yeah, sure.

I agree. I watched the Blue Angels perform last September @ CNE (Toronto). They were awesome to watch. But do keep in mind, these guys are cream of the crop from US Air Force. Also these guys practice more than regular US Air Force Pilot (Watched a documentary on discovery regarding the qualification for Blue Angels and their routines once they are selected).

Also got to watch F22 Raptor perform as well. :D

Kit,but we are doing exactly that with the Indo-Russo stealth 5th-gen fighter which has started flight testing. The cost bhowever ofsuch exotic birds means that they cannot be acquired in very large numbers-why even the US is panting at the cost, and will have to operate along with lesser capable fighters

Slightly OT here but is there any plan to upgrade the A/C in our flight demo teams (both SKAT and Sagar Pawans for the Navy)?
perhaps a sqdn of gleaming new <insert your MRCA here> or even the Hawk?

maybe. it all depends how the Sitara performs once in production.

Speaking to a SKAT pilot, they will wait to see how the engine takes the extreme ranges thrust upon it during the performances. Since it is a new engine will have to wait and see

By the way if f-16 is out, SH isnt any better...

I remember watchin "Behind Enemy Lines" where both F/A-18 pilots fall prey to SAM fire by the Russian backed Serbs.
The funny part is, Owen Wilson was flying the SH for Aerial photography of mass graves.

Worth a watch...!!

I am not a big fan of SH myself but really? Behind enemy lines? That is your source of information regarding SH? MRMCA thread seems to have a habit of reaching new lows.

that story is based on the F16 pilot that was shot down and intermingled with the experiences of a SHAR pilot, both of whom had to hide behind the lines and were rescued by SF teams

The Saudis are buying/have bought the EF.

Two Saudi pilots were in Spain for training as part of this purchase. One of them died in this tragic accident.

I know. Its just that the airbase's name is amusing. I'm sorta torn between wanting to laugh and being solemn about the pilot's unfortunate death.

In the mid eighties IAF showed soem interest in Tornado as compared to the Jaguar. The Britisg of course refused to sell it saying "it is too advanced and sophisticated for India" and hence not suitable for India, SDRE !!!

Today the British are offering the Typhoon saying "it is too advanced and sophisticated for India" saying that IT IS THE MOST SUITABLE FOR INDIA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember the the famous episode when a high ranking ( i.e. super snobbish) British Railway official who scoffed and offered to eat every pound of steel that India (Tata Steel) could make as per the British specifications. Today Royal navy is using the Tata Steel (Corus) for their aircraft carriers !!!

India Rules Out Integration of BrahMos Missile on MMRCA
BY: PTI
The high-profile “medium multi-role combat aircraft” (MMRCA), 126 of which are being purchased by the IAF at a mind-boggling price tag of Rs 42,000 crore, has been ruled out for integration with the supersonic BrahMos missile. BrahMos Aerospace, the Indo-Russian joint venture, has successfully developed the low-altitude supersonic BrahMos cruise missile that is quicker than any other missile in the world.
Having a speed of 2.8 mach, BrahMos, with a range of 290 km, is four times faster than American Tomahawk cruise missile, widely used by the USA during its offensive against Iraq. BrahMos Aerospace is now working to develop a hypersonic missile having a speed of over 6 mach.

Addressing a press conference on the sidelines of the Space Expo here today, A Sivathanu Pillai, CEO and MD of BrahMos Aerospace, said the new hypersonic missile would be ready in another five years. The warhead of the hypersonic missile would be relatively smaller, he said and added that because of its speed, the hypersonic missile would hit the target with a devastating impact nevertheless.
Pillai said following the induction of the supersonic BrahMos in the Army and the Navy, they were now working to develop a supersonic missile for the IAF. He said the missile would be integrated with the Russian Sukhoi 30 aircraft. Pillai said $50 million, split between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and its Russian partner on a 50.5 and 49.5 per cent basis, had been allocated for developing the air force version of the missile to be used for air-to-ground attacks Modifications in the Sukhoi aircraft for integrating the missile would be carried out by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) at its facility at Nashik, Pillai said.

Blueprint for the changes would be drawn up by the Sukhoi design bureau in Russia, Pillai said. The flight-test of the air force variant of the missile would take place in 2012, he added. On the issue of integrating the missile with the MMRCA, which the IAF was in the process of acquiring, Pillai said medium aircraft were not being considered for firing the missile. “Sukhoi, being a big aircraft, is ideal for BrahMos,” he said.

Does any of the big aircraft in MMRCA i.e. Rafale , Typhoon , F-18 are known to carry any ordnance/payload of 2.5 T ?

If it does then perhaps there is merit in integrating Brahmos if any one of the types gets selected.

I second that. it shows the forum in very poor light to make such remarks when a person has lost his life in an aircraft crash. Saudi or not, the pilot deserves respect.

FE reports..

MMRCA contenders yet to be shortlisted
(Full article)
India is yet to shortlist contenders for supplying 126 fighter jets under the $11-billion medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) deal. ‘‘At the moment, the Offsets Technical Committee—headed by the special secretary of defence production and including members from the defence research and development organisation (DRDO), Indian Air Force (IAF) and the ministry of defence (MoD)—is evaluating technical offsets proposals and sending their observations to all the six contenders,” officials privy to the process told FE.

The MoD can decide on shortlisting the contenders only when the technical offsets evaluation committee report and the field trial report are complete,”
they said.

Based on the observations, vendors would submit fresh and revised offsets proposals, which will take a minimum of two months. After that, the contenders will be evaluated again and the recommendations will be sent for approval to the MoD, sources said, adding, “after it goes to the Cabinet Committee on Security for a final decision, government-to-government negotiations will be held in order to get additional benefits for the country.”

Lockheed Martin F-16IN, Boeing F/A-18, Dassault Rafale, EADS Eurofighter Typhoon, Saab Gripen and Russian MiG-35 are contending for the 126-aircraft programme. The Indian Air Force will invite different contenders to discuss flight evaluation reports once the field trials are complete. The contenders, along with their partners, have also been invited by the MoD to present their offsets proposals. So far, the IAF has had a meeting with Lockheed Martin and Dassault of Rafale.

According to sources, “Vendors complying with the rules, the defence procurement policy and technical offsets will ultimately be considered. Also, the lowest bidder and the designated L1 will be selected as the MMRCA.” For the first time, IAF will consider the 'life-cycle costs', rather than just the lowest bid.
All the 'shortlisting' rumors will have to take a back seat for a bit..

Please don't get into these one-liners. If you have anything to add to the knowledge of others, please feel free to do so. Such one-liner opinions without any factual discussion is pure wastage of B/W and electronic real-estate.

Well going by previous experience there is going to be a lot of "pure wastage of B/W and electronic real-estate by the time a decision is taken on the MMRCA. Remember news reports months ago which said that the LCA engine decision was just round the corner? Well the corner is not in site yet...
