Iran making it easier for India to toe US line

'Friend' Iran calls India a Zionist regime
TOI
Iran is a close friend of India, but that has not prevented its supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, from asking the world's Muslims to support the "struggle" in Kashmir against "Zionist regimes".

In his Haj message to pilgrims earlier this week, Khamenei said, "Today the major duties of the elite of the Islamic Ummah is to provide help to the Palestinian nation and the besieged people of Gaza, to sympathize and provide assistance to the nations of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and Kashmir, to engage in struggle and resistance against the aggressions of the United States and the Zionist regime, to safeguard the solidarity of Muslims and stop tainted hands and mercenary voices that try to damage this unity, to spread awakening and the sense of responsibility and commitment among Muslim youth throughout Islamic communities."

In the 1990s, India had registered its gratitude to Iran for helping it out diplomatically on Kashmir on human rights. But despite it all, Iran continues to play the Kashmir card in the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), as do other Islamic countries even as they privately tell the Indian foreign office that they did not mean it.

Perhaps the title of the thread needs to be changed to UPA-US relations.
As long as Sonia Gandhi, a practising Christian is at the helm, literally ruling over 1.2 bil people all these garbage dime a dozen reports will be published by the West and will find religious freedom in only Congress rule states. Look how specifically they mentioned Christians and Muslim persecutions in Gujarat etc, but never mentioned the anti-Sikh riots of 1984 because of the Congress party's involvement. Ironically, in their very own free country you have to be converted to become a Bobby jindal or Nikki Haley.

India summons Iranian envoy over Kashmir remarks
Times of India
India on Friday summoned the Iranian charge d' affaires and conveyed its "deep disappointment" over comments on Kashmir emanating from Tehran. "We have conveyed to the Iranian authorities our deep disappointment and regret that they have chosen to disregard our sensitivities and chosen to question our territorial sovereignty," a government source said.

The government reaction came to the message of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to Haj pilgrims in which he has appealed to the Muslim elite worldwide to back the "struggle" in Jammu and Kashmir, equating the state with the "nations" of Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. External affairs ministry's Joint Secretary Y.K. Sinha summoned the Iranian charge d' affaires to his office Friday and conveyed the Indian government's sentiments, said sources. It was pointed out this was not the first time. Khamenei had made a similar statement in July this year.

How is this actually done?

Is there much thumping of the table and wild eyed spittle spraying, baying for the iranian blood??

Or is it a civilised chai biskoot session with a sealed envelope being handed over in a genteel fashion?

When they showed in BBC news Obama looks as if he is already a defeated president.
He has to do some radical changes for the people of US to win back their confidence even if it means reversing some of the decisions and taking poor and jobless into account at the cost of some economic burdens. Unless he makes such radical decisions soon he will not even be a strong contestent in the next election.

Obama mission...Jobless benefits blocked...Anti-U.N. violence

WASHINGTON -- President Obama's cautious response to the fiscal commission co-chairs' proposal was "quite frankly, a disappointment," according to Terry O'Neill, president of the National Organization for Women. The draft report would slash Social Security benefits for millions of Americans, hurting poor people and minorities in particular.

7,000 copies of Hindu text join Christian Bibles in area hotel rooms

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/lif ... 01378.html

Pull open a drawer in some Houston hotel rooms, and beside your room-service menu and Gideons Bible, you might find a copy of the Bhagavad Gita.

The sacred Hindu text is making its way into nightstands across the country through a campaign to spread the scripture and awareness about Lord Krishna, the deity believed to have spoken the philosophical teachings millennia ago.

A local Hare Krishna temple has placed about 7,000 copies of the Bhagavad Gita in more than 100 hotels and motels in the area.

The project has been successful because of the number of Indian hotel owners who are familiar with the text and happy to place copies in their rooms as a way to share the universal truths of their faith.

Indian-Americans make up about 5 percent of the population but own about 40 percent of hotels and motels in the country, according to the Asian American Hotel Owners Association.

The Best Western at Interstate 290 and FM 1960 was one of the first local properties to provide the Bhagavad Gita to visitors. According to owner Alex Patel, the project has worked well in his 57-room motel so far.

"People get to read a different kind of holy book, and they like it," Patel said. Guests ask him questions about the story from time to time, and he assures them they can take the text with them.

In diplomacy there is never chest thumping but bed hopping. After the event the Tables are turned. If that makes strange bedfellows its a scuccess (if the diplomats are of opposite gender, even if they are same that's fine(r) too).

Just like in good old arranged marriage if the groom picks sweet mithai after the girl is shown(paraded) it means he likes her, if the groom selects Daal Mott its a negitive...

Make no mistake, the Republicans are in thrall to the factions that do not want any colored immigrants in the USA. This is just one of their many efforts to deep six the 1965 immigration act. In this particular case, it will mean children born to people who are not "green card" holders or citizens will be out of luck.

The original comment was based on correcting the impression that this was somehow restricted to illegal immigrants.

To your response, yes that is how it is in many liberal democracies. But those countries also allow people to file for citizenship after they have been domiciled in the country for a certain period of time. The US law allowing this was repealed under another Republican initiative earlier, so this will lead to a permanent underclass.

I am all for it. I think you should be a citizen for your child to be a citizen. If you are a green card holder, then your child also gets a green card and after the 5 year residency requirement can apply for citizenship. Otherwise they take the child back to their country of origin and the children never is an American except for their passport. They live and grow in various other countries instead of the US and neither do they have sufficient American values from their parents. What is American in them?

It should be the same for Indian citizenship too.

Well, it does encourage the devolution of the USA into a Saudi Arabia, so it will hasten the decline of empire and ultimately reduce the $ aid funneled to Pakistan.

There is a vast and growing underclass in USA today in the children who grew up without having papers.

Have to agree here. The children should get the citizenship when the parents get it too. And it should be the same for India too, whether illegal or legal immigrants.

I agree mostly, except that I believe in a democracy there has to be some provision for long time domiciles to get integrated and earn citizenship. Unfortunately, in the Indian case, brain dead BJP pushed through PIO and OCI, that completely subverts Indian citizenship, by helping foreigners make an end run around citizenship law.

In this respect though, BJP implemented the idea better than Republicans, since they did not touch the ability to file for citizenship after being domiciled for 12 years.

In the run up to the 2008 Indo-US Nuclear Deal, some US Democrats, including (then) Senator Obama, argued against the Indo-US Civilian Nuclear Agreement. Obama supported an amendment proposed by Senator Jeff Bingamen (D-New Mexico) which would only allow US nuclear exports to India if New Delhi stopped producing fissile materials. Senator Richard Lugar (R-Indiana) called the Bingamen amendment a “killer” precondition as India was certain not to accept it since neither Pakistan nor China had halted fissile material production. When the bill in its entirety came before the Senate, Obama voted for it, but he supported two different revisions (that entered the final deal) which brought the bill more in line with the norms of the Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) regime. Obama expressed his reservations: “I have concerns with potential non-proliferation consequences of this agreement…I remain concerned about the issue of nuclear testing. A decision by the Indian government to conduct such a test could trigger an arms race in South Asia that would be extremely dangerous and destabilizing.”
Tauscher was a harsh critic of the Deal in 2008. In an op-ed in The New York Times, Tauscher said that the (then proposed) Deal would “shred” “the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty …and India’s yearly nuclear weapons production capability would likely increase from 7 bombs to 40 or 50.” However, right before the Spring 2010 NPT Review Conference, Tauscher, speaking as a spokesperson for the Obama Administration, made an about face: "We don't believe we weakened the NPT in our peaceful civilian nuclear deal with India,” she said at a press conference. With the appointments of both Einhorn and Tauscher, the Obama Administration made gestures that it would place increased emphasis on aggressive non-proliferation. However, with Einhorn’s demurral and Tauscher’s reversal in opinion, these gestures became more evidence of the Administration’s continued commitment to the Deal.

This is an interesting post. Maybe I get bi$ch-slapped for saying this, but what the heck, life's too short.

I have lately seen, especially on the West Asia thread a propensity for eulogizing "progressive" islamic regimes. Dubai is extolled, even the Saudis....

At the end of the day, a moslem is a moslem first and will see everything through the prism of his/her religion onlee. Sooner or later, the moslem will discover, if he in UAE or Bahrain or Oman or Doha, that the hindu is a "contemptible" infidel. However, some "desis" rejoice over short-lived gains and wax euphoric over real or imagined equalitis with the arabs. The same happened with the eye-ranians a few months ago.

I certainly do not begrudge India its strategic space. If India and Indians believe that its best interests lie with the islamic world, then so be it. But IMO it does not. Some may fall victim to this taqqiya, but i hope that enough indians see through this. A moslem or any adherent of islam, at the end of the day, can and will ALWAYS fall prey to izzlamic extortions. Its built-in.

May be this "Persian" or "Iraniian" bile is a wake up call. Dont matter how much you try to appease the moslems. When all is said and done, you will still be a contemptible hindu (perhaps at par or slightly below the contemtible jew). There may be tactical reasons to play nice with the "progressive arabs" but no strategic reasons. Just my jaundiced "zionist" opinion FWIW.

Shalom.

Krishna hails Obama visit
"India-US understanding and cooperation on the shared challenge of terrorism emanating from our neighbourhood continues to grow,’’ he said in a statement to the parliament. The two governments have decided to further strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation and to begin a Homeland Security Dialogue, he added.

Kirshna said that the MEA welcomed President Obama’s affirmation of US support for India’s permanent membership of a reformed United Nations Security Council. He said, "This reflects the shared belief of our two sides that an efficient, effective, credible and legitimate United Nations is required to ensure a just and sustainable international order.’"
Obama visit was a 'milestone': Govt
"India-US relations have matured over the years. We conduct this relationship in a spirit of mutual respect and as equal partners," Krishna said. Talking in the context of Obama's visit, he said it was a "milestone in the process of strengthening the strategic partnership between the world's two largest democracies and in bringing two peoples closer."

He underlined that the India-US relationship stands on its own merits and is not directed against any other country. "It is a relationship that is based on shared values and growing opportunities for mutually-beneficial bilateral cooperation and a global partnership. It is an important factor for peace, stability and prosperity in the region and the world," Krishna said.

He welcomed the US decisions announced during Obama's visit to ease export controls on dual-use items, removal of Indian entities from the "so-called Entity List" of the US, realignment of India in US export control regulations as well as the intention of the US to support India's full membership in the multilateral export control regimes.

Resolution introduced in US Congress backs India's UNSC bid
Economic Times
Lauding India's commitment to global peace and development of the South Asian region, a resolution introduced in the US House of Representatives has appealed to the United Nations to take necessary steps to make New Delhi a permanent member of the Security Council. The resolution by Congressman Gus Bilirakis gives the sense of the House of Representatives that the UN should forthwith take the procedural actions necessary to amend Article 23 of the Charter of the United Nations to establish India as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

The resolution, which has been sent to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs for necessary action, noted that India is the largest democratic country in the world in which all political views are freely expressed and respected. India is the world's second most populous country, with over one billion citizens residing within its borders and is one of the largest contributors of troops to UN-mandated peacekeeping missions, it said. The resolution also said that India has demonstrated a strong commitment to global peace and promotion of the peaceful development of the South Asian region.

"... it is the sense of the House of Representatives that the United Nations should forthwith take the procedural actions necessary to amend Article 23 of the Charter of the United Nations to establish India as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council ," it said.
