Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
Re: Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
An entirely new set of stars has risen during these games, which is a very good thing. With the Olympics 2 years away, which isn't a very long time, I do hope our athletes continue to train hard.
Whatever happened to the shooting contingent?

Re: Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
I guess they might be tired , also the fact that level of compettition in shooting is much higher in Asian games compared to CWG.
Re: Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
in general comparison of capabilities and challenges
CWG = SDRE
Asian Games = TFTA
CWG = SDRE
Asian Games = TFTA
Re: Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
Expecting elite athletes to peak in successive large events just a month apart was always going to be tough. And yes, the CWG is a lower standard than AG, except in some sports like swimming and cycling.
Re: Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
AFG has won 9 gold and is in fourth position. WTF!!!

Re: Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
which tally are you looking at ? afg has 2 medals so far.
my expectations for this AG was 10+ golds, since we got 10 last time around. if we don't get that it's a overall failure IMO. we have also failed to convert many of the silvers. more importantly, high time we introduced games like kabaddi in asian games, there are enough nonsense events in every competition suited to the hosts.
what suraj says is very true btw, athletes take a long period of training to peak and it is a carefully planned process. once at the peak they would wind down and take another complete training cycle to peak. this competition falls right in the winding down phase for most athletes.

Re: Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
After a week of Games, just 2 golds is pathetic. In Asian Games 2006, India had 10 golds, 17 silvers and 24 bronzes. Its unlikely we will reach those figures. I don't think we can blame it entirely on CWG fatigue.
I understand that the level of competition is very high, but come on, Indian weightlifters and shooters have always produced something. Or many the expectations were just too high this time?
Whats happening with boxing?

Re: Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
Here is a list of gold medalist from last asian games.
Pankaj Advani (Cue Sports :: Men English Billiard Singles)
Humpy Koneru (Chess :: Women's Rapid)
Jaspal Rana (Shooting :: Men's 25 m Centre Fire Pistol, Men's 25 m Standard Pistol)
Leander Paes & Mahesh Bhupathi (Tennis :: Men's Doubles)
Leander Paes & Sania Mirza (Tennis :: Mixed Doubles)
Athletics :: Women's 4x400 m Relay
GEETHA Sati
KAUR Manjeet
KULATHUMMURIYIL Chitra
PARAMANIK Pinki
Kabaddi :: Men
Shooting :: Men's 25 m Centre Fire Pistol Team
JUNG Samresh
KUMAR Vijay
RANA Jaspal
Chess :: Mixed Team's Classical
KONERU Humpy
KRISHNAN Sasikiran
PENTYALA Harikrish
The 3 gold medals in shooting were totally unexpected. Jaspal Rana came out of semi retirement and won two individual and 1 team gold. Just like this time all the heros of commonwealth games flopped completely. Though the performance this time is much worse.
Leander paes won 2 golds and if he and Bhupati had played, India would have at least repeated its performance. Though there is still pretty good chance that we may land a few medals in tennis. Mens singles, womens singles , mens doubles and mixed double medals are still within reach.
Koneru humpy won 2 golds. This time we missed out on at least 2 certain golds as she did not participate.
Two gold medals in cricket were gifted away by not sending teams.
There is still pretty good chance that we will get close to our tally of gold from last Asian games or maybe surpass it, who knows.
2 almost certain golds in kabaddi - Mens\Womens
As far as I know other than 1 Indian boxer(chote lal) all Indian boxers are still in fray and 4 of them are already in Semis. So there are 9 potential medals up for picking.
1 almost certain gold from Mary Kom in boxing. Preeti Beniwal is also pretty good.
If we get lucky we might pick up some medals in wrestling (men + woman)
Pretty good chance in 4X400 womens relay .
Mens hockey
Aditya Mehta in snooker
Ranjan Sodhi in double trap and team
Tennis- men's single, women's single, men's doubles, mixed doubles
Odd stray medal in Athletics especially in throws

Re: Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
Imagine Michael Phelps playing Basketball or Hockey. How many medals he could have won in 08?
We need to get into sports where there are medals available in heaps. 18 hockey players working hard over a single piece of medal.
Instead imagine 18 players working hard in gymnastics or any water sport. A few of them hitting the victory mark would boost our medal tally by so much.
See the way Archers,shooters and boxers are getting medals for us in various categories of the same sport.
God knows how many freakin medals China wins in such sports where a single person is capable of winning 4-5 medals. In comparison a Hockey/Football player can hope to win just win medal howsoever gifted he/she might be.

the rowers had to train in Hyd in a brown water lake using 8 yr old boats. their new boats got stuck in delhi customs.
they lived a in hot tin roofed dorm with no attached bathrooms. they pooled own money to buy a fridge and a washing machine.
they were saying china has 14 world class facilities with clean water just for rowing training.

Re: Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
That brings the question why were the two events held so close to each other? Some of my friends have been lamenting the amount of matches Indian cricket team are playing so close to the World Cup.Suraj wrote:Expecting elite athletes to peak in successive large events just a month apart was always going to be tough. Re: Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
a good number of countries like HK, thailand, kazakhs, iran, taiwan, north korea have managed 5-10 golds each so far. so looks like they have niche areas of great strength. we are currently sulking in 14th place due to lack of golds. none of them are CWG members. kazakhs have extra resource of soviet era russian immigrants and even forcibly resettled chechens and german speakers perhaps from WW2 era - I saw one participant with surname of germanova or something.
I read a article on yazd the ancient iranian city. they showed some kinda old model akharas for wrestlers ... with photos of the khomeinei and ahmednijad on the wall..looks like weightlifting, wrestling, boxing and martial arts are core areas of iranian sports - no doubt encouraged by the martial govt. even their women have won golds in wushu type sport.
except in athletics, cycling and the swimming pool, I believe asian standards are now at par or better than olympic games stds.

sudha singh has won gold in 3000m women steeplechase.

why did our women cricket team not participate. Paks just beat BD for the gold.
Re: Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
Soon after Preeja Sreedharan and Kavita Raut won the gold and silver in the women's 10,000 metres.
The triple gold surprise was given by Sudha Singh when she won in the 3000 metres in a photo finish game.
India's Sudha Singh raced to the gold in the women's 3000 metre steeplechase at the Asian Games in Guangzhou on Sunday.
In a neck-and-neck finish, Sudha beat China's Yuan Jin for the gold with a personal best timing of 9:55.67 sec.
Yuan, who challenged Sudha in the final few metres, had to setlle for a silver, clocking 9:55.71. Japan's Minori Hayakari settled for the bronze clocking 10:01.25 secs.
Preeja clocked a personal best timing of 31:50.47 seconds to win the first gold medal for India the on the opening day of the athletics competition. The gold was also the day's second for India and the fourth overall.
Kavita also registered her personal best timing of 31:51.44 seconds while Shitay Habtegebrel finished third in 31:53.27 seconds.

Somdev assured silver in mens' doubles by making it into finals. And assured bronze in mens' singles by making it to semis. He is 2nd seed and top seed Lu from Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) pulled out with injury so chances are good for gold in singles.
Re: Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
the chinese girl was behind sudha singh by only around a foot at the finish line per a TV excerpt. quite predictably no channel is showing any reruns of these hard fought truimphs but NDTV has time for barkha dutt's circus on reality tv morality. thats like pot calling kettle black...

Re: Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
Great day for India.
Fine show by Ronjan Sodhi, saw last few minutes live on TV. He was 2nd behind a Chinese shooter but the Chinese simply disintegrated in the last few rounds whereas Ronjan shot great.
Excellent performance by the women archery team also, they were leading against South Koreans in the semi final but lost nerves in last few rounds and ultimately it was a tie which was later won by the Koreans still excellent performance considering the Koreans are the best in the world.
From TOI - link
Sania too, played well. Her opponent's service was simply too strong.
Saw few boxing bouts, all I saw were won by Indian boxers. Hopefully we will get some golds in Boxing, should expect some golds in wrestling and some more in Athletics if things go well. One should be ours in Kabaddi, chances look good in Tennis, Chess and Hockey too. And lets not forget Deepika and Dola in Archery, and Rahul also.

Great run by the long distance runners also. Esp the 3000 race was simply great, the Chinese runner caught up with Sudha with few meters left but then Sudha made a last second dash and won the race.Indian women archers settled for a bronze in the team event after missing out on an opportunity to stun world number one South Korea in the semifinals shoot-off.
After qualifying for the semifinals with an easy 214-202 victory over North Korea, the Indian trio of Dola Banerjee, Deepika Kumari and Rimil Buriuly were leading by two points at 167-165 after 18 of the 24 arrows against South Korea.
But, the Indians failed to get over their nerves in the final six arrows (two each by the three archers) and the score was tied at 221 each in the end.
In the shoot-off, one of the South Korean trio hit the bull's eye while the other two scored 9 and 10. India could only come up with 9, 8, 9 to lose the tie.
In the bronze medal play-off against Chinese Taipei, India were trailing from the beginning and they were four points behind after 18 of the 24 arrows.
India scored 56 from the last six arrows as against 51 by their opponents to win the close contest 218-217.
Sania too, played well. Her opponent's service was simply too strong.

Re: Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
Gold medals in Athletics, victory in Hockey and quite a few Silver and Bronze. Overall a good day for India . If we could surpass our previous medals tally without Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupati, Sushil Kumar, Humpy etc, then it would really be a good achievement.

GUANGZHOU: Despite suffering heavy defeats in all three league matches, the Indian men's rugby team on Monday qualified for the quarterfinals of the Asian Games as only nine teams are in the fray.
India, who were thrashed 43-5 by Korea in the opening pool B match on Sunday, were drubbed 61-0 by China and 42-12 by sub-continental rivals Sri Lanka to finish at the bottom of the group.
Yet, they qualified for the quarterfinals and will play the winners of pool B at the University Town stadium on Tuesday.
The women performed no better, and were steamrolled by Japan 31-0 for their second straight preliminary league defeat after being thumped 50-0 by Kazakhstan.
Against both China and Sri Lanka, India looked clueless. Captain Lu Zhuan scored four tries and converted all of them to finish with 28 points for China and helped his team notch up the biggest margin of victory in the tournament. The winners led 35-0 at the halfway stage of the mismatch.
Re: Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
Why crying? Dunno why we even sent a rugby team?
Re: Asian Games 2010 (Nov 12 )
why not? a few years ago japan was on the receiving end of similar drubbings, yet now they are a regular competitor in the rugby world cup (final tournament) - and are gradually working their way up. Italy was a similar contender, but are now regularly giving england and france a tough time in the six-nations rugby cup (used to be 5 nations until they were included)
it will take time, but i think eventually India can be a strong rugby playing nation
