NoKo-SoKo War crisis

Post by Philip »

The latest warring between NoKo and SoKo has tanked the Indian stockmarket, which fell by 500 points and a crisis which could bring the world to the brink of yet another conflict, this time between a nuclear NoKo and will bring the two Pacific giants,China and the US eyeball-to-eyeball once again .

North Korea rains artillery, South retaliates
http://news.in.msn.com/international/ar ... id=4608007
Four soldiers were hurt when North Korea launches as many as 200 missiles at the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong. The South immediately returned fire, raising the spectre of war once again between the warring neighbours. Meanwhile, the Korean tension has hit Indian markets, with the Sensex tanking 500 points.

Seoul: Four South Korean soldiers were wounded Tuesday when North Korea fired artillery at a South Korean island near the two countries' border in the Yellow Sea, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported, citing military officials.

The North fired dozens of rounds, some of which landed on Yeonpyeong island, Yonhap quoted Colonel Lee Bung Woo, spokesman for South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, as saying.

The South returned fire, targeting an artillery position on the North's coast, the Defence Ministry in Seoul said.

Homes were damaged on Yeonpyeong, South Korea's YTN television said.

About 1,000 South Korean soldiers are stationed on the island, which lies 12 km from North Korea's coast. It has been a source of tension between the two neighbours because of its location and rich fishing grounds, and naval clashes have occurred nearby.

Relations between Seoul and Pyongyang have deteriorated this year after a South Korean warship sunk in March in the Yellow Sea also near the inter-Korean border. Forty-six sailors were killed. Seoul blamed Pyongyang for their deaths, but the North has denied involvement.

South Korean President Lee Myung Bak called an emergency meeting of ministers with security-related portfolios to discuss how to respond to the fire while a Unification Ministry official told Yonhap that the South was considering evacuating its citizens out of North Korea.

Few foreigners visit isolated, Stalinist North Korea, but South Koreans work there at an industrial park operated by both Koreas at the border town of Kaesong and at the Mount Kumgang resort.

Meanwhile, Indian shares fell more than 2 percent in afternoon trade on Tuesday, in what traders called a knee-jerk reaction to North Korea firing dozens of artillery shells at a South Korean island.

"It's a knee-jerk reaction to the tense situation in Korea," said KK Mital, head of portfolio management services at Globe Capital in New Delhi. "If the situation escalates, then we will see a sharp impact on the markets in the region."

At 1:13 pm, the benchmark 30-share Bombay Stock Exchange was trading down 590.56 points at 19392.51, with all of its components declining. Nifty was down 136.40 points to 5873.60.

All of the sectoral indices were in the negative. Realty, metal and auto stocks were among the major losers, while some IT stocks were trading weak as well.

The only gainer on the Sensex was Hindustan Unilever. Among losers were Hindalco Industries , SBI, Sterlite Industries and Tata Power.

Seoul shares fell as news crossed the wire during the final few minutes of trade that North Korea had fired dozens of artillery shells at a South Korean island.

Even before that, the index had turned lower as investors sought to reduce risk in their portfolios amid growing European debt worries.

The Korea Composite Stock Price Index ( KOSPI) ended down 0.79 percent at 1,928.94 points.

"This is not good. The aggression was on a residential area, occupied by civilians," said Han Beom-ho, a market analyst at Shinhan Investment Corp.

North Korea on Tuesday fired dozens of artillery shells at a South Korean island, setting buildings on fire and prompting return fire by the South, Seoul's military and media reports said.

"The market will start off badly tomorrow for sure...South Korea's geopolitical risks are again heightened," Han added.

While the shelling dampened overall market sentiment, some defence shares rose, with military equipment producer Victek jumping 4.7 percent.

The market moved sideways during most of the trade as investors were reluctant to make bets at the index's current level, and before examining US post-Thanksgiving retail sales on Friday, according to Kim Seong-bong, a market analyst at Samsung Securities.

Hyundai Motor shares fell 3 percent on concern that deepening labour disputes could lead to production disruptions at South Korea's largest automaker.

Meanwhile, Shares of Kia Motors ended down 1.6 percent.

other than a strong demarche and dossier nothing will happen. Soko did nothing when their ship was sunk bu Noko torpedo. did they atleast wipe out some part of the Noko navy?

with Seoul around 60km border and well within SRBM range Soko has no stomach for a fight.

What about the 28k odd US soldiers and a CBG in the waters? Will it be of no significance at all?
If presence of US forces and an aircraft carrier cannot deter the dear leader what will? :?:

Lets be sympathetic to Soko - they are in more precarious situation than we are

however once the gloves are off Soko is capable of vicious retaliation.

best way to solve this crisis for eternity is to ship pakistan next to NoKo with one of those earthquake tectonic plate tricks CT's speak of.

seriously though, the korean people have suffered enough for china and its rabid dog, high time the slippery il and his cronies are taken out.

yeah but how - they have a large stockpile of arty/srbm/mlrs and a secure rear border with PRC + a few nukes and the willingness to take Soko down if dear leader is going down. PRC is using them as a cat's paw to control japan and soko and keep unkil off balance fighting the fires that kim jong sets off in the forest. same strategy as using Pak to keep CAR/Rus/India/Af off balance.

having a land border with PRC seems to be a prerequisite to carry on with mischief. Myanmar and Nepal are other 'projects' where they have no succeeded yet.

Singha is right, Surya. Forget shiny toys and fine looking soldiers. SoKo too will be prevented by Khan to do anything. Too many little goritos' christmas stockings will be shorn off LCD based toys and that is a strict no-no in Washington during this season of giving.

SoKo are just not the right skin color to stomp on China's vicious pet badgers and their kids are not really entitled to a safe life. Something we all are sadly, too familiar with, since like, 200 years. Hana Brand Spiralbound Dossiers it is.

Envoys are already helping collate that dossier while the latest Kim model, Nano-Kim is allowed to enrich in peace with Chinese blessings. Too familiar.... sigh.

There's another possibility that folks should consider. And that is China instigated NoKo to up the tempreature to warn Khan not to push too much with QE2. One thing Khan and its munnas like Japan and S Ko cannot afford is another hotspot after Iraq and AfPak. China knows that pretty well. See how sweet and reasonable it's trying to be with call for the six party talks which is China's biggest leverage. Khan is in a nice pretty mess. Popcorns anyone?

This is precisely PRC instigated escalation, it craves as much attention as NoKo itself.

1) Robert Gates staement

2) coupled with changes in NoKo, the NoKo leadership might have thought that there is mis underestimate in SoKo and Uncle that this is the weakest point, so might try something.
Hence NoKo swift response.

This is exactly like KAL 007 flight that was shot down by SU in the 80s.

Good points Shiva. I would add QE2 which has got the Panda sh#t scared as Khan could go on with QE 3,4,5 etc. Each one will drive a nasty nail in Panda's Merchantalist business model.

At the same time one thing Khan cannot afford is another hotspot where troops are required. Of all this dovetails with need of the new Dear Leader in NoKo showing how togh he is.

all of us here like Soko and would like to see nothing better than Noko get a good thrashing (loss of H&D for panda also) .

I still think if Soko decides to enforce a naval trade blockade and take out Noko AF and Navy, the losses will be minimal esp with Unkil MLRS and WLRs and UAVs working together to pound the crap out of Noko artillery sites.

or id one prestigious Noko sector and wipe the slate clean in that using combined arms with a promise to continue doing the same until Noko backs down and behaves.

I guess it is the 'curse' of democracy that countries like South Korea and India are unable to answer or rather continue to bear the brunt of reckless, neighbouring authoritarian regimes.

Lot of parallels can be seen from our own 26/11 episode or Kargil and this.

I am so sure that if SOKO were to thrust one torpedo up the musharaf of NOKO, nothing will happen and it may rather lead to a domino effect of weakening the leadership in the eyes of people and hence some kind of overthrow of regime. It may at least trigger a change in leadership.

Guess SOKO has gone too far the Khan-protection-route to take any independant decision. I shiver to think if a similar parallel might happen to us in future.

On a side note - what will happen if Pakis were to torpedo one of our boats?? Shelling they keep doing but fortunately/un fortunately our major cities are too far off to make a newspaper headline.

*Speculation Alert*

Something's not right. Guess, even with all those recent war games, Soko And unkil were not ready for a full fledged war? They must have expected Noko to cower down with all the msucle flexing and were caught off guard with this.

Or is it, that SoKo has already extracted its pound of flesh immediately after the shelling and must have caused havoc on NoKo's side? News about NoKo's news may also be deliberatly muted in the media to shape international opinion against it.

Or was it some rogue general who thought he could pull of a "red october"?

The Yoengpyeong spat or "Ping-Pong War".

In the spat,a truth has emerged, that NoKo have no fear of the South whom they have tickled and teased for decades, especially after going nuclear. They well know that with their Chinese godfather that in the event of a major spat if the South retaliate, there will be some quick frefighting by the PRC and the US.At this stage in global affairs,a major war in Asia would be disastrous for the global economies. The Irish bankruptcy with fears of it rapidly spreading to the Iberian peninsula engulfing Spain and Portugal ,could see another global meltdown. The hidden hand of the PRC in this spat cannot be ruled out as what NoKo seem to want is more moolah from SoKo and the US,a tactic of blackmail exactly as Pak is doing. When you compare these two rogue states and their chief sponosr,China, the picture rapidly emerges.Pak is blackmailing the US over fighting in Af-Pak and NoKO is doing the same by threatening to set alight SoKo.The geriatrics in Zhongnanhai must be in splits!

The pressure upon the SoKo govt. to teach the North a lesson must be almost impossible to resist as the SoKos have to prove their manhood .This is the second outrage according to them after the mysterious sinking of a SoKo corvette which they and the West ascribe to a NoKo torpedo, however contested by both China and Russia, who sayy that it could've been a loose mine.If the conflict escalates, there will be a lot of global stock available on the cheap including India!

South Korea warns of 'enormous retaliation'
Two Koreas on brink of war as pressure mounts for response

By David McNeill and Donald Kirk in Seoul

Xcpts:
The divided Korean peninsula appeared to be teetering on the brink of all-out war yesterday after the North fired dozens of shells across the border during military drills by the South. Two South Korean soldiers were killed and 16 other people were reportedly injured.

The artillery bombardment – one of the heaviest since the Korean War ended without a peace treaty in 1953 – left parts of Yeonpyeong island in the Yellow Sea, north-west of the capital Seoul, in smoking ruins.

President Lee Myung-bak put the South's military on its highest alert and called the shelling a "completely unforgivable" attack on civilians. Last night he appeared to be formulating a response that could include military strikes. "I think enormous retaliation is going to be necessary to make North Korea incapable of provoking us again," he told Yonhap news agency. Mr Lee insisted that an attack on a village of farmers and fishermen, accustomed to living in peace with the certainty that South Korean forces patrolling the waters around them would ensure their survival, could not go unanswered.

The attacks called for "a response beyond the rule of engagement", he said. As political pressure mounted for a return strike, he added: "Our military should show this through action rather than an administrative response."

In Seoul, fearful members of the public crowded around television sets showing black plumes of smoke rising from the island's village. The overriding question, as expressed by office worker Lee Yong-suk, was whether the flare-up would spread into a much wider confrontation in which North Korean gunners could intimidate the huge populace around Seoul and the nearby west coast port of Incheon.

"People are shocked," she said. "People are dying. It's a kind of war."

South Korea's defence ministry claimed that dozens of homes were hit in the hour-long attack, apparently targeted at a military base, and that the South Korean military fired back about 80 shells before the two sides returned to an uneasy stand-off. Local television said many of the island's 1,300 people have fled. "The administration and military must deal with North Korea's brutality using whatever means necessary," said An Young Hwan, a spokesperson for the ruling Grand National Party.

Pyongyang claimed the South fired first and threatened a "merciless" response. In a statement aired on the state-run KCNA news agency, the North's military said the South had "recklessly provoked" yesterday's exchange by firing "dozens of shells" inside its territorial waters during military exercises, "despite repeated warnings".

It added: "The revolutionary armed forces of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea standing guard over the inviolable territorial waters of the country took such decisive military step as reacting to the military provocation of the puppet group with a prompt powerful physical strike."

South Korean officials said the skirmish began when Pyongyang warned its neighbour to stop its military drills in the area. When Seoul refused and began firing artillery into disputed waters, albeit away from the North Korean shore, the North retaliated.

Both sides of one of the world's most heavily militarised borders are technically still at war with thousands of troops on hair-trigger alert. Sporadic shelling and exchanges of fire have occurred over the years – troops last fired on each other on 29 October. But yesterday's attack is considered especially serious because it was aimed at a populated area.

South Koreans appeared far more indignant over the attack yesterday than they were in March after the sinking of the Cheonan, split in two by a torpedo fired by a North Korean midget submarine, killing 46 sailors. South Koreans tended to view that episode as an isolated incident involving only military forces, not civilians.

The attack this time was seen as much more serious for one basic reason. "It was the first time they attacked us on land since the Korean War," said Lee Jong-min, professor at Yonsei University and ambassador on security affairs at the foreign ministry.

Nobody appeared to believe that the attack could have been at the orders of a regional commander acting on his own. "Kim Jong-il has to have ordered it," said Robert Collins, retired intelligence analyst for US command here.

Yesterday's attack marked an escalation. "I'm very concerned because this was a direct attack," said Shin Wha-lee, professor of International relations at Korea University in Seoul.

Pyongyang showed off a new uranium enrichment facility last weekend in a move denounced as "provocative" by Stephen Bosworth, the US special representative for North Korea policy.

But yesterday's deadly spat, which follows a month of hopeful signs in the always-volatile relationship, has Pyongyang watchers baffled. Some believe it may be a demonstration of power amid the looming succession of leader Kim Jong-il's son, Jong-un, catapulted from obscurity to senior military and political ranks at an extraordinary Workers' Party conference in September. The fear is that events inside the nuclear-armed North may be out of control as the balance of forces around Kim Snr shifts.

Russia and Japan condemned the shelling, but China, Pyongyang's old ally, held back, urging both sides to "do more to contribute to peace".

Mr Bosworth, who is visiting Beijing, said: "Restraint should be exercised on both sides." In the UK, Foreign Secretary William Hague strongly condemned the attack, which he said was "unprovoked". South Korean sources said that the US, which has 28,000 troops in the country, was keeping a "close watch" on developments, and had stepped up its force-wide alert.

Dear Surya, there's nothing wrong with that word at all. It's commonly used to denote the ability to "rise to the occassion" (pun intended!) and confront a challenge as a man,"mano-a-mano",when repeatedly attacked.Don't confuse it with "virility",which means something else!

So the shorting decision proved right in Hindsight ..

However, that has to be attributed to the Gents at CBI and LIC Housing Finance, which made the day worse for Realty and Banking stocks !
LIC housing took a hit of about 25 % in RED at its lowest !!!

Thanks to the NoKo-SoKo uncertainty, most of the day was horrible for trading as the markets were as FLAT as Flat can get .. Which was the same with The Chinese markets too.. Surprisingly, SoKo showed smart recovery from its days low opening .. !

Maybe it was because of Shree Obama pressing NoKo to stop its provocative actions over a telephone call with the South Korean President ! :P

cannot post due to copyright, but today's FT has a good analysis on dispute.
Clearly calls it as a Dragon-Unkil showdown. Highlights that PLAN has become more sophisticated over past few years in terms of equipment and operations and has definitely been flexing its muscles. HIghlights Beijing's lining up behind Pyongyang.
It seems that a major PLAN exercise is underway close to where the SoKo-USN exercise is about to be staged. Whilst no one expects this one to boil over, this is a very clear sizing up exercise
possibly to test Unkil's resolve to defend Pacific interests - one wonders how far Beijing is willing to push this time around?

WSJ

South Korea is constrained from a military response by the proximity of its largest city, Seoul, to the inter-Korean border, just north of which North Korea has lined up howitzers, rocket launchers and missiles for attack. But officials have several options to consider for penalties, including some that it considered after determining that North Korea was responsible for sinking a South Korean ship earlier this year.

The most damaging penalty on the table is the shutdown of an industrial park just inside North Korea where South Korean companies employ about 40,000 North Korean factory workers, generating needed revenue for the cash-strapped North. As well, South Korea may begin to blast propaganda messages from giant loudspeakers set up on its side of the border. Though such messages can't be heard very far into North Korean territory, they can be heard by the North's troops who are stationed along the border and North Korea threatened to shoot at the speakers earlier this year.

South Korean officials on Wednesday revealed more details about the attack. They said North Korea fired 170 artillery rounds in a barrage that lasted more than an hour. About 90 hit the island, damaging 21 buildings, including 19 that were destroyed by fire.

South Korea began firing back about 13 minutes after the barrage started, the military said. It fired 80 rounds but there were no reports of damage by North Korea.

In addition to the civilians found Wednesday, the barrage killed two South Korean marines and injured 15 troops—five seriously—and three civilians.

looking at the map, Soko seems to hold major islands way up west along Noko west - somewhat like the aegean sea where Greece pretty much holds all islands off the Turkish coast. must be due to US ambhibious power during korean war incheon landings also taking these islands over.

Noko sure must be p****ed with Soko having these strategic islands.

Is Seoul really that vulnerable??

Its a little more than 20 miles from border.

Noko arty cannot be right on the border so assume they are a few miles behind

The mostly Soviet\Chinese arty will probably max out at Seoul's outer ring

Yeah they will have rockets etc - but with the Firefinders - counter fire should take them out

More stupid is the positioning of Incheon airport. It should have been to the east of Seoul.

Seoul will take some hits but not sure if it will be a fireball as some analysts claim???

My Soko veteran (was a para) neighbour says it will be good for the Gen X\Y\Z Soko kids to toughen up with a little barrage :)

Noko arty capable of hitting Seoul is about 500

so of course the geniuses calc 4 or 8 rounds per minute and come up with the scary numbers,

As if Noko will be firing with the same number of guns after 30 minutes

Also there are rugged mountains around Seoul - will be interesting how they factor.

All this is tamasha. Junior il is taking over from papa il. This is just muscle flexing (like the 13 step dictator cycle).

You have to keep in mind that in modern times, it has never been the case that the same despot's family held on to power for three generations.

so of course the geniuses calc 4 or 8 rounds per minute and come up with the scary numbers,

As if Noko will be firing with the same number of guns after 30 minutes

Also there are rugged mountains around Seoul - will be interesting how they factor.

IF Noko just does arty barrages from their side, yes, they will soon be degraded with counter-battery PGM. However, they will probably push in a few miles, thereby bringing a lot more guns able to target Seoul. Also, the NoKo forces are not in a desert area like Iraqis were - their heavy artillery is deeply entrenched amongst steep mountains, with heavy concrete protection. So with the heavily protected heavy artillery from beyond the border, and the lighter guns pushed a few miles across the border, Seoul is in for a major barrage.

The US forces in SoKo are among the most heavily armed formations among the entire US military - less infantry, and lots more artillery/recon/UAV/MBT forces. Along with the large SoKo forces, the final outcome is not in doubt. What is in doubt is how much damage will SoKo suffer - can they put the NoKo guns offline quickly enough?

As long as everything is under the hood Man or Woman we are all fine.
Meanwhile There is much to lose for SoKo than NoKo hence the aggresive attitude, pluss consider the fact that if there is any opposition to Junior ill this crisis comes in handy. Hope SG takes a lesson and goes to war with TSP to install R G as PM or self as PM. No?
