These are the delusions that Pakistanis suffer from
They somehow think, even those who are otherwise normal, that Pakistan was much better off economically during the 50s and 60s.
This reminds me of a joke that used to make the rounds during the times of the last ‘benevolent’ dictator of Pakistan, Field Marshal Ayub Khan. A well-fed Pakistani dog was crossing the border into India when he ran into an undernourished dog coming from India. The Pakistani dog asked the Indian dog, why are you going to Pakistan and he replied, to eat. The Indian dog then asked the Pakistani dog, why are you going to India, and he replied, to bark.

Hmm,
Is the gobernment of Sind displaying some form of independence here by imposing those statutes to try and prevent mayhem during Muharram? In the rest of Pakistan, muharram is well known for the Shia-Sunni conflagurations, with the Shias being killed by the wide variety of government backed and armed-to-the-teeth sunni radical groups.

If the MQM wallahs in Sind keep showing this kind of autonomy, they will be natural choices of leading the government of Sindudesh when it gets formed.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan | Mon Dec 6, 2010 4:05pm IST

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - Two suspected suicide bombers killed at least 40 people in an attack at the office compound of a senior government official in an area along Pakistan's Afghan border on Monday, officials said.

"It appears to be a suicide attack. I don't know the exact number of casualties because efforts are being made to remove debris," Amjad Ali Khan, the top government official in the regiog, who appeared to be the target of the attack, told Reuters by telephone.

"There were two bombers. They were on foot. The first blew himself up inside the office of one of my deputies while the second one set off explosives when guards caught him."

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday issued stay orders preventing any amendment in the blasphemy law until further judicial proceedings, DawnNews reported.

Suicide bombers kill 50 people in Pakistan
One of the reasons the attacks were so deadly was because the bombers had filled their suicide jackets with bullets, said Amjad Ali Khan, the top political official in Mohmand, who was at the compound in Ghalanai town when it was attacked.

"These bullets killed everyone who was hit," said Khan.

Rahul M ji,

Thank you for your offer. I've been thinking of setting up a google group and inviting those there who have received a copy of the ebook. I'm thinking on these lines due to reasons of discretion. But I haven't really made up my mind one way or the other as yet. I'll come back on your offer after some time to think over it.

Or a blog perhaps?

Is it possible to have a thread / section on BRF visible only to people with verified credentials?

Some ideas that can't always be aired on an open forum might be aired there.

Not bad, but I think instead of these cheecky edges and snicks going past 3rd man and fine leg towards Peshawar for boundaries, I am looking forward to a straight drive towards Rawilipindi or cover drive towards Lahore, or better still a super straight drive towards I'bad.

Drone-acharya strikes 5 in Miranshah, TSP.

From Dawn (posting in full) : US drone attack kills five militants in Pakistan: officials
“A US drone fired four missiles on a house and a vehicle,” a senior Pakistani security official told AFP. “At least five militants were killed.”A local intelligence and security official confirmed the strike and casualties. – File Photo

MIRANSHAH: Missiles fired from a US drone on a vehicle and a house killed five militants in Pakistan’s lawless northwestern tribal belt near the Afghan border on Monday, security officials said.

The missile strike took place in Khysore village, 35 kilometres (20 miles) east of Miranshah, the main town of troubled North Waziristan tribal district.

“A US drone fired four missiles on a house and a vehicle,” a senior Pakistani security official told AFP. “At least five militants were killed.”A local intelligence and security official confirmed the strike and casualties.

“First the US drone fired two missiles on a militant vehicle and two of the occupants were killed, while three others escaped and hid in a shop adjacent to a house.

“The drone fired two more missiles on the shop and three of them were killed and three others were wounded,” the official said.

A covert US drone campaign in Pakistan has been stepped up over the last few months with strikes in the tribal belt, which Washington considers the most dangerous place on earth, taking place with increasing frequency.

More than 250 people have been killed in 49 strikes since September 3, heightening tensions with Islamabad over reported US criticism of Pakistan’s failure so far to launch a ground offensive in North Waziristan.

The United States does not as a rule confirm drone attacks, but its military and the Central Intelligence Agency operating in Afghanistan are the only forces that deploy the aircraft in the region.

Officials in Washington say drone strikes are highly effective in the war against Al-Qaeda and its Islamist allies, killing a number of high-value targets, including the Pakistani Taliban’s founding father Baitullah Mehsud.

The leadership of the Haqqani network, which is linked to the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, is also based in North Waziristan.

It has been accused of plotting some of the deadliest attacks on US troops in Afghanistan, including a suicide bombing that killed seven CIA operatives at a US base in Khost last December.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry said recently it would reject any overtures seeking to spread the drone campaign beyond the tribal areas, amid US press reports that Washington wanted to expand the zones inside Pakistan where the pilotless aircraft are allowed to operate.

The Pakistani Taliban have claimed responsibility for a number of arson and gun attacks on NATO supply convoys destined for Afghanistan, saying they are in revenge for the drone war.

Washington has attempted to soothe anti-Americanism, which is rife throughout Pakistan, with increased civilian aid to help the country overcome devastating summer floods. – AFP

Pakistan: sum of all America’s fears
In every Pakistani town I visited things have deteriorated from my previous visit seven years before. Security is a thousand times worse. The capital, Islamabad, is locked down Baghdad-style, with blast walls, barbed wire, check points and hotels converted to fortresses with armed guards.

The once-efficient civil service has deteriorated in every province. The level of English, though widely taught, has become less and less evident. Good people emigrate. The country sinks into debt, and infrastructure everywhere is deteriorating.
The sum of all American fears is that Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal will fall into the hands of Islamic extremists, to which the WikiLeaks material attests. And there can be no doubt that the Islamic threat to the state is growing.
Meanwhile the cold war with India continues apace. Pakistanis believe India is helping Baluchistan separatists in that province on the Afghan border. “That’s their way of getting back at us for what we do in Kashmir,” said an amazingly frank military officer. Money flows to developing more nuclear weapons, and most of the army is facing east towards India.
A commentator named Fasi Zaka, in the Karachi Tribune, recently wrote: “Pakistan, you are a failed state. Not because of Zadari. Not because of America. But because you are a failed people.” I don’t agree with that, but it shows a lack of confidence growing in this country.

Pakistan is not a failed state, but it is increasingly in danger of becoming one. And the stakes for America make Afghanistan seem like a side show

Article below supports the point that RajeshA ji is trying to make

Zardari in Sri Lanka: Counter-balancing India
Lanka has entered the post-insurgency reconstruction period and is in need of assistance for economic re-construction. Pakistan, whose economy is in a bad shape, is not in a position to help Sri Lanka either financially or through other means. One of the purposes of Zardari’s visit was to explore the possibility of Pakistan being associated with some of the reconstruction projects of China in Sri Lanka----one of the examples of such association being China buying from Pakistan its requirement of cement for its projects in Sri Lanka. Qureshi told Pakistani pressmen that China-Sri Lanka relations were gaining strength and this would be good for the benefit of the three countries. The idea of Pakistan and China co-operating in jointly assisting South Asian countries has also been taken up by Islamabad in respect of Afghanistan. Islamabad sees it as a way of counter-balancing Indian influence in Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.
It was announced at the end of the visit that the National Bank of Pakistan will be opening a branch in Colombo and that the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will be re-starting its flights to Colombo from March next. The Sri Lankan Airways presently has three flights a week to Karachi. These decisions could have security implications for India. The transit of terrorists trained in Pakistan to South India via Colombo will be further facilitated and Colombo could become an additional centre ----after Kathmandu--- for the dissemination of Indian currency notes counterfeited by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

So Pakistan does not have ANTHING positive to offer Sri Lanka, but will try and fit like a 'paploo' where China does all the hard work.
Talk of being over optimistic!!!
The only problem with this grand plan is that when the chinese have done all the hard work, they will fit their own 'paploos' into the scheme of things.

The only thing that the Pakistanis will try and do is IT exports. And we already know that the LTTE and the LET (Notice the similarity in the letters also) were colloborating at some distant level via the ISI.

Sri Lanka wants to build itself up quickly, and they are in the Big boys game - balancing China against India for economic gains.

No possibility for a economically, technically and ideologically bankrupt Pakistan to phit in there I'm afraid.

Sorry if this is a naive question, but I was wondering where can we post potential pieces of bad news from TSP? I see we have all the good pieces of news in TSP thread like IED Mubarak or cheerful economic news in 'TSP Stress Watch' thread. While we savor those, we may also need to pay attention to potential bad news like -

Pakistan and the dehumanisation of minorities -Ishit aqq Ahmed
http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.as ... 2010_pg3_2
(Even though he is aware of the dogmatic beast but avoid poniting finger at the real culprit )
Professor Brij Narain was a famous Lahore-born academic whose books on economics were on the required reading list of the curricula of pre-partition universities. Enamoured by Jinnah’s English lifestyle and mannerism and himself strongly secular and idealistic, Brij Narain underestimated the morbid impact of the rabidly anti-Hindu and anti-Sikh rhetoric of the 1945-46 election campaign in Punjab. He developed a strong set of arguments to prove that Pakistan was economically feasible and viable. When partition took place in mid-August 1947 and Lahore was burning, he continued to believe that Hindus like him could be Pakistanis like any other community. A mob arrived at his door and mercilessly killed him notwithstanding his pleas that he supported Pakistan. Miss Ralia Ram was a Lahore-born Christian lady who wrote letter after letter to Quaid-e-Azam warning him about Congress machinations. She too believed in the righteousness of Pakistan. Her letters are easily accessible in the several volumes of the Jinnah Papers. Fortunately in 1947, Christians were not a target group. Many Hindus and Muslims saved their lives by faking a Christian identity. Both in Amritsar and in Kasur thousands of Muslim refugees received medical aid from Christian volunteers.
Even more interesting is the fact that the majority of Punjabi Christians supported the Muslim League’s case for Pakistan before the Punjab Boundary Commission. Their leader, S P Singha, argued that the Christians would rather have a united Punjab, but if Punjab were to be divided they could expect better treatment in Pakistan than in caste-ridden India. The leader of the Anglo-Indians Mr Gibbon informed the Punjab Boundary Commission that the Anglo-Indians were happy to be in Pakistan. They regarded Lahore and West Punjab as their homeland. However, just before the partition of India it was decided to support the Pakistan movement (Munir Report 1954: 196-7). Thereafter the Ahmedis put all their efforts behind the Muslim League’s campaign. Sir Muhammad Zafarullah Khan, a leading member of the Ahmediyya community, presented the Muslim League case before the Punjab Boundary Commission with sterling competence. The counsel for the Congress Party, Mr Setalvad, could not restrain himself from publicly paying compliments to Zafarullah during the proceedings. In 1947, the Ahmedis were still included in government statistics among Muslims, and that alone had inflated the Muslim percentage of the Gurdaspur district to a bare majority of 51 percent.
Ridiculing Sikhs as simpletons is a prejudice that still survives in Pakistani Punjab, but their leaders proved to be the most farsighted in anticipating the type of Pakistan that would emerge. In the second half of May 1947, the Sikh leaders met Jinnah in Delhi. Jinnah and Liaquat had come fully prepared to convince them to support the Pakistan demand. They told the Sikhs to write down whatever they wanted and it would be granted. The charm offensive, however, was too late in the day. Earlier, in March 1947, Sikh villages in the Rawalpindi, Attock and Jhelum districts had borne the brunt of mob attacks at the hands of Muslims. At least 2,000 Sikhs lost their lives. No Muslim League leader, including Jinnah, issued a public statement condemning those attacks. I have looked in vain in the two main English-language newspapers of pre-partition Punjab, the Tribune and The Pakistan Times as well as in the Jinnah Papers for any evidence of the condemnation of that outrage. In the event, Hardit Sikh Malik, who acted as the spokesperson for the Sikhs told Jinnah that they could not risk their future on his promises; the day he is gone things would change. He was right.
The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) is considered a ‘democratic, parliamentary’ party by some western academics. I have seen with my own eyes a doctoral thesis passed by the reputable Gothenburg University of Sweden in support of JI’s democratic credentials. Its leader, Syed Munnawar Hassan, has also demanded that Aasia Bibi should be put to death. That is the type of democracy the JI actually represents.

Although I would rate the article as good overall I will post some passages that I find stupid or objectionable:

The first sign of stupidity in a lot of American "sensible articles is shown by these two quotes:
An elected civilian government is back in power, after a long stint of military rule. But as has happened so many times before, the civilian government has turned out to be corrupt and inefficient. President Asif Ali Zadari, the widower of the slain Benazir Bhutto, is unpardonably weak, and his prime minister, Yusuf Raza Gilani, is hardly any better.
and
The most powerful man in Pakistan is General Ashfaq Kayani, army chief of staff.
If Kayani is the most powerful man and he heads the army how the fung can you say Zardari is "unpardonably weak". That is the Paki army talking through the authors mouth. If Kayani is the boss how can Zardari have power? Is the author stupid or is he stupid?

The second thing I find very irritating is this
The state has been hardening its Islamic grip with tolerance falling by the wayside. The Shia minority is often set upon and murdered. The tiny Christian minority has been persecuted and burned alive by mobs. The unrelenting Wahhabi version of Islam, imported from Saudi Arabia and practiced by Al Qaeda, is at war with the softer, more tolerant Sufi tradition of the Indus.
Note how the Hindu and Sikh minorities in Pakistan are totally and completely ignored by all these gora Amriki firangis. They don't give a flying fuk.

The last words of utter stupidty are here:
Pakistan is not a failed state, but it is increasingly in danger of becoming one.

One line that I have always wanted to write about myself is that I am working on a secret project that will make me 25 years old very soon and I will then decide about Katrina Kaif's proposal that she will want to marry me after that. But that is OT for this thread. However news of Pakistani awards, innovation, greatness etc go on here.

I always used to think what would US do if Pukistan was US's neighbour? Imagine ~30,000 are killed in Mexico because of drug war since 2006. The crime is smuggling weed/stuff into US and people in US consume those things out of their own volition.

Pakistan on the other hand did not even kill 3000 terrorists since 2001. These terrorists kill other people enmass and yet Pakistan AND US are protecting them. What duplicity!

Soosai alert!! 07/12/10
QUETTA: A suicide attack targeted the convoy of the top elected official in Pakistan’s southern province of Balochistan on Tuesday, killing one person but leaving the chief minister unhurt, :( police said.

The bomber detonated alongside the motorcade of Nawab Aslam Raisani in Quetta, the capital of a province where violence connected to a separatist insurgency and Taliban violence has surged this year.

“It was a suicide bombing. The convoy of the chief minister was damaged,” Quetta administration official Nasim Lehri told a local television channel.

The just disclosed fact that the Pune German Bakery bombers were trained in Colombo indicates that the island has already become a key transit point for Paki terrorists, etc. What one predicted for years has come to pass. The GOI abdicated India's vital interests in the island asininely in fear of turd rate politicos like Vaiko in TN,who have little or no following, and forgetting that 70%+ of the island's population are Sinhalese, mainly Buddhist, who also have their origins from India. The current govt. in Colombo have done the world a signal favour by eradicating the LTTE totally, something that the US has laboured for years in Afghanistan,a war which has lasted even longer than the Vietnam War!

The GOI now has no excuse but to seriously and vigorously engage the GOSL,sign security treaties with it so that the island is never used for anti-Indian activities. It will thus checkmate the Sino-Pak insidious design where the Chinese are financing the wherewithal for the Pakis to do their dirty work,as ethnically the Chinese (forced labour convicts imported from China to work on Chinese aided projects) stand out and are very unpopular amongst the locals-for eating up all their wildlife!
It is an act of futility to keep on assuaging the feelings of the northern pro-LTTE Tamils who did nothing when the LTTE were killing the IPKF soldiers and later on assassinated Rajiv Gandhi.

Whose Interests ?
The WikiLeaks come as no surprise to Pakistanis, for we as a people are quite accustomed to grovelling as an established form when dealing with foreigners, regardless of their rank. Maulana Fazlur Rehman, when asked to leave a message as the US ambassador was busy, dutifully wrote that he had come to request the ambassador to support his case for the prime ministership of Pakistan and that he had a certain number of parliamentarians on offer at a certain price. He already has the title of Maulana Diesel, so the terms are well known, only the price had to be negotiated.

Well the blabbermouth ISI mouth pissess on Pakistani talk shows have lately taken it upon themselves to point out that in addition to the Kashmiris, the Sikhs, the Taaaaamils, the Maoists and the Assam people are revolting against India.

One can expect the pakistanis to make due efforts in this regard.

BTW I can't but help noticing the independence shown by the Sindh gobernment these days.
