Visa is now down
This ban might provoke backlash for these brands among various Govts. They will now realize the US control over transaction processing and take remedial steps to provide alternatives.

India like Brazil should quickly create an alternative card processor. Indian banks can form a consortium for an alternative.

Listening to NPR and assorted massaland radio hosts, I can’t help but maintain my position on the leaks from last time when that helicopter video was released.

I think every single word in every single document that is leaked, is scripted such that massa can run its pre-scripted drama to cumulate in a much desired standing applause and have the audience eating out of its hand.

I was also shouting loud over the roof top from the page-1 onwards :) It is better to analyze the intent of each line that is allegedely coming as leak as opposed to dig some unknown info.

I repeat - This is the latest tool in statecraft.

Attempts to blame Assange are misguided -- Kevin Rudd

Post by Amitava »

Australia’s foreign minister Wednesday blamed the US for the leak of some 250,000 classified diplomatic cables, saying the attempts to blame or prosecute Australian native and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange for the leak are misguided.

Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd said those efforts are mistaken. “Mr. Assange is not himself responsible for the unauthorized release of 250,000 documents from the US diplomatic communications network. The Americans are responsible for that,” said Mr. Rudd, according to Australia’s ABC News.

There are references to a score of cables from India, but nobody has so far seen any of these cables.

If these cables indeed had been sent, we can be sure that (a) Paki-pasand EJ American(s) is(are) sitting in New Delhi. I am doubtful at all if somebody like ATS chief Hemant Karkare would have taken an American official into confidence about his work and even sought their protection. Clearly, the attempt here seems to be to paint India as a rabid Hindu-fanatic country even while absolving of ISI of any wrong doing. The attempt is also to implicate India in FATA. Again, what is wrong with aggressive Army Generals ? Has anybody seen more aggressive Army generals and political leadership than the rampaging Americans ? Let them say anything about our Army leadership. I am sure we have a similar opinion about them as well.

If Che Guevara symbolised the people's struggle against imperialism in the 20th century, then Assange is the new Che of the 21st century. If guerilla warfare in the 29th century was mostly played out in tropical jungles of Asia and the Americas, guerilla warfare today can be found more in cyberspace with a multitude of maverick bloggers around the globe battling to keep the truth of world affairs available to humanity.
Assange's crime has been to expose the duplicity of the worl's most powerful nation and the contempt it has for its fellow leaders and peoples worldwide. That is unforgivable. The US will never be trusted again in the same way.As one leak showed,at the same summit where it professed "peace" with Russia,NATO was behind the scenes planning for the defence of the Baltic states. It has therefore lost the trust of Russia, which has just said that Assange should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize!

Asssange has now become the globe's David battling against the goliath of the US and is rapidly gaining support even from his home country, which said that the leaks are the fault of US security not him.

1.(SBU) Summary: In response to an invitation by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), ESTH officer traveled to Hefei, Anhui Province, in December 2009 to visit several Chinese government-sponsored scientific institutions. During this time, ESTH officer learned of the below information through official presentations, personal observation, and informal/discreet conversations with CAS staff members. Most significantly, the Institute of Plasma Physics continues to conduct research on how to use nuclear fusion as a sustainable means to produce energy. At the same time, China is expanding its use of nuclear fission as an energy source and plans to open at least 70 nuclear fission power Qnts within the next 10 years. In 2009, CAS's Institute of Plasma Physics budget was USD$20 million. Additionally, other CAS institutes are conducting research in biometrics, computational physics and material science, nanoscience and nanomaterials, soft-matter physics, environmental spectrometry, fiber optic wave-length division multiplexing, quantum communications, superconductors and spintroncis, and cognitive sciences. End Summary.

Institute of Plasma Physics - Nuclear Research

------------------------------------

2. (C) In mid-December 2009, the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) Institute of Plasma Physics (IPP) in Hefei, Anhui Province was preparing for another cycle of experiments with its Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). EAST was designed to be a controlled nuclear fusion tokamark reactor with superconductive toroidal and poloidal field magnets and a D-shaped cross-section. One of the experimental goals of this device was to prove that a nuclear fusion reaction can be sustained indefinitely, at high enough temperatures, to produce energy in a cost-effective way. In 2009, IIP successfully maintained a 10 million degree Celsius plasma nuclear fusion reaction for 400 seconds. IIP also successfully maintained a 100 million degree Celsius plasma nuclear fusion reaction for 60 seconds. One of IIP's immediate goals is now to maintain a 100 million degree Celsius plasma nuclear fusion reaction for over 400 seconds. Currently, IIP is also conducting research into hybrid fusion-fission nuclear reactors that may be able to sustain nuclear reactions indefinitely, and at sufficient temperatures, to cost-effectively produce energy. IIP officials stated that China has the explicit goal of building at least 70 nuclear fission power plants within the next 10 years. IIP scientists claimed current Chinese nuclear energy production efforts use Uranium 235, but research is being done to make Uranium 238 a feasible alternative. IIP's 2009 budget was USD$20 million - a two-fold increase over the previous year - and IIP leadership expects their budget to increase again in 2010. Roughly one-third of IIP's budget comes from China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC); another one-third of the budget comes directly from CAS, and the final one-third comes from China's Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). According to IIP leadership, NDRC has been very laissez-faire in its oversight, but MOST tends to micromanage projects and the expenditure of money. (COMMENT: Based on personal/discreet conversations with IIP staff members, the relationship between CAS and MOST is strained due to officious and annoying oversight insisted upon by MOST. IIP scientists much prefer the NDRC management style and wish more of their funding could come from this body rather than MOST. END COMMENT) IIP has roughly 450 full-time staff members, over 400 graduate students, and approximately 100 contractors under its purview.

Institute of Intelligent Machines - Biometrics Research

------------------------------------

3. (C) The Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) Institute of Intelligent Machines (IIM) in Hefei has developed a biometrics device that uses a person's pace to identify them. The device measure weight and two-dimensional sheer forces applied by a person's foot during walking to create a uniquely identifiable biometrics profile. The device can be covertly installed in a floor and is able to collect

BEIJING 00000263 002.4 OF 002

biometrics data on individuals covertly without their knowledge. When questioned about the device's potential applications, IIM officials stated the device was being used by "secret" customers and was not available on the commercial market. IIM also said they were involved with China's "Program 863." (COMMENT: Program 863 is China's national high-technology development plan that includes both military and civilian technology development programs; therefore, it is likely the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is one of the customers for whom this biometrics device was developed. END COMMENT)

Institute of Solid State Physics - Nanotechnology Research

------------------------------------

4. (C) In mid-December 2009, the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) Institute of Solid State Physics (ISSP) in Hefei was conducting research in the fields of computational physics and material science, nanomaterials, and soft-matter physics. ISSP's 2009 budget was roughly $6 million (USD). ISSP's top priority projects are: one-dimensional nanomaterials, spin and charge research using perovskite manganese oxides, and the design and preparation of high-dampening materials. ISSP also conducts research on nanomaterials and nanostructures for China's "Program 973." (NOTE: Program 973 is China's national plan for improving basic scientific research and development. END NOTE)

Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics - Spectrometry & Fiber Optic Research

------------------------------------

5. (C) In mid-December 2009, the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (IOFM) in Hefei was modifying environmental spectrometry technology to detect TATP explosives for use in counter-terrorism efforts. IOFM was also conducting fiber optic research on wave-length division multiplexing (WDM) technologies using pulsed and continuous laser sources at both single-mode and multi-mode wavelengths. A cursory walk through one of their labs revealed that IOFM was specifically conducting experiments in the 980-1150 nanometer range, and that they were conducting experiments using hydrogen-filled fiber optic communication lines. (COMMENT: Hydrogen-filled fiber optic lines are technologically challenging to manufacture, but provide many advantages; one of which is increased security and protection from tampering. END COMMENT)

University of Science and Technology of China - Organization & Research

------------------------------------

6. (C) In mid-December 2009, the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei had academic programs focusing on Math, Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Nuclear Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Management, Humanities, and a department dedicated to the development of gifted young people. USTC has 37,000 staff and 40,000 graduate students. USTC oversees two national laboratories: the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory and the Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Science at the Microscale (HFNL). HFNL has 95 faculty members and roughly 400 graduate students. HFNL research focuses on quantum communication, nanoscience, superconductors, spintronics, and cognitive sciences. In the area of quantum communication, HFNL was conducting research in quantum teleportation and free space quantum cryptography that scientists hope will result in "totally secure" communications. USTC also oversees China's "Program 178," although they did not describe the nature of this program. (COMMENT: A cursory walk through their labs seemed to indicate they had already succeeded in single-particle quantum teleportation and are now trying to conduct dual-particle quantum teleportation. END COMMENT) HUNTSMAN

The Wikileaks scandal is more than just a diplomatic scuffle; it’s a war for the future of the Internet
By Tom Mendelsohn
The Foreign Desk
Wednesday, 8 December 2010

http://blogs.independent.co.uk/2010/12/ ... -internet/
You’ll have been following the Wikileaks saga, of course, because it is novel and interesting. Maybe you like it because it looks like a live action retelling of Enemy Of The State, or because history seems to be in the making. It feels big, doesn’t it? It is, but it’s bigger than that, too: what we’re witnessing right now is the opening of hostilities in the first big infowar. The war for the Internet is very big indeed.

If you’re not a digital native, or if you’re some kind of hearty outdoors type, this may not seem important, but you’re dead wrong. We could be spectators for the start of the cyber Great War – and they’ve just knocked over Franz Ferdinand.

We’ve seen cyber skirmishes before: Russian hackers targeted and sank Georgia’s internet infrastructure during their brief conflict in 2008, while there’ve been hints of Chinese muscle flexing for some time – especially last month, when traffic through US government sites was rerouted through Chinese servers for 18 minutes in November.

The difference now is that this battle is extra-national; it isn’t one country against another, so much as an establishment of nations fighting a global insurgency – with the soul of the Internet as the spoils.

At the moment, the greatest invention in human history is broadly free. It allows for unprecedented communication, truly free assembly, and with these, an unparalleled forum for the exchange of ideas. It’s a seat for radicalism, and it has the potential to usher in dramatic reorganisation of established power structures.

Up until now, the apple cart hasn’t been upset enough to incline governments to make overt changes. Wikileaks has changed that, and provoked the US into action: now the powers that be can see what the Internet can do, they want it changed.

It’s Internet power that lets us watch this unfold minute-by-minute, as the web’s corporate support structure crumbles before our eyes. One by one, companies we take for granted bow to pressure and desert the insurgents. First Amazon’s hosting, then Pay Pal, EveryDNS and Mastercard and Visa – betrayals all, robbing Wikileaks of the oxygen of hosting and funding. This is the old order’s first salvo, an old-fashioned show of power, using old-world intimidation tactics to bring down tangible assets and demonstrate the fragility of the Internet we thought we could trust.

Make no mistake, if they win here, online life will change. Expect tighter government control, more regulations and sanitised information flow. It won’t end the web as a place of freedom – but it will raise the technological barriers to entry, necessitating secrecy software and technical savvy. People without the IT skills may never be able to stumble upon radical ideas or free speech.

This leads us to the insurgency. There are people fighting against the constriction of the net, a rebel alliance of hackers and activists, and it is they who are causing such a ruckus.

Now Wikileaks has put its head above the parapet, myriad spontaneous groups are emerging from the soupy corners of the Internet, refusing to take all this authoritarianism lying down. Many of these are simple anarchists, like the infamous group Anonymous – a collective in the loosest possible sense of troublemakers and technophiles. Angry, *****-obsessed adolescents they might be, but they’re angry, obsessed adolescents with significant technological firepower – and a grudge.

Operation Payback is in full swing, lashing out with Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks – which flood a website with fake hits in order to overwhelm its servers. Armed with a simple hack tool called the Low Orbit Ion Cannon (LOIC), hackers have been attacking the websites of those companies who slighted Wikileaks and Assange with surprising success, knocking them offline for hours at a time.

The Swiss bank that deserted Assange was down for the whole day yesterday, while MasterCard – which, lest ye forget, still allows you to donate to subsidiaries of the KKK – has now lost control of its own homepage. If people can’t see www.mastercard.com, it’ll certainly cost them money; infowar is waged on the bottom line.

DDoS attacks, while difficult to trace, are illegal, and the LOIC currently has a Trojan in it.

Other groups are rallying around too: Pirate Parties and private individuals are hosting Wikileaks mirrors now that wikileaks.org has been removed from the DNS – the Internet’s address book. Allies worldwide are assembling on Twitter and Facebook, disseminating information, organising protest and downloading the all-important insurance file. Consider the Justice for Assange group which sprang from nowhere yesterday, and organised an entire protest through Twitter in time for his court appearance.

The war has escalated to the extent that anti-Wikileaks hackers are retaliating with DDoS attacks of their own, counter-attacking anonops – Anonymous’ own organisation hub. Last week, an apparently rightwing hacker calling himself ‘th3 j3st3r’ DDoS’ed Wikileaks itself, with limited success.

Like I say, it’s going nuts out there, and this is truly just the beginning. Remember, if this sounds trivial or nerdy to you – and well it may – it doesn’t mean that it isn’t happening or that it isn’t significant. While the only casualties right now may be websites and services, there will be bigger trophies to come in a war which is only just getting warmed up – and which will certainly shape the future of the world.
This is Orwell's 1984 coming true. The great prophet in his novel wrote about the "Ministry of Truth",actually engaged in erasing truth and spreading lies, the aim of "Big Brother".It is scandalous that the so-called "self-appointed", "greatest democracy" in the world is behaving worse than even the Nazis of WW2 infamy and the all-out war to silence Wikileaks is being overtly played out with such diabolic and machiavellian ruthlessness.

SSridhar, My thoughts exactly. All iz well with India if they have such dorks and simpletons as diplomutts monitoring India.

rohiths, Those reports look like someone witnessed djinn/esoteric technology. I wonder what AmberG assesses that report. BTW stamping it classified is making it "sacred poop".

Philip, Its a battle of the post-nation states in the cyberspace. A postnation-state entitity (Wikipee) battles a nation-state (US and the leader of the Wsetern Westphalian state system).

Guardian says the "Pakileaks" are fake indeed
An extensive search of the WikiLeaks database by the Guardian by date, name and keyword failed to locate any of the incendiary allegations. It suggests this is the first case of WikiLeaks being exploited for propaganda purposes.

The controversial claims, published in four Pakistani national papers, were credited to the Online Agency, an Islamabad-based news service that has frequently run pro-army stories in the past. No journalist is bylined.

Shaheen Sehbai, group editor at the News, described the story as "agencies' copy" and said he would investigate its origins.

http://humantrafficking.change.org/blog ... log-top_fb
The now infamous Wikileaks recently released a cable from Afghanistan revealing U.S. government contractor DynCorp threw a party for Afghan security recruits featuring trafficked boys as the entertainment. Bacha bazi is the Afghan tradition of "boy play" where young boys are dressed up in women's clothing, forced to dance for leering men, and then sold for sex to the highest bidder. Apparently this is the sort of "entertainment" funded by your tax dollars when DynCorp is in charge of security in Afghanistan.

DynCorp is a government contractor which has been providing training for Afghan security and police forces for several years. Though the company is about as transparent as a lead-coated rock, most reports claim over 95% of their budget comes from U.S. taxpayers. That's the same budget that Dycorp used to pay for a party in Kunduz Province for some Afghan police trainees. The entertainment for the evening was bacha bazi boys, whose pimps were paid so the boys would sing and dance for the recruits and then be raped by them afterward. That's your tax dollars at work -- fighting terrorism and extremism in Afghnistan by trafficking little boys for sex with cops-in-training.

In fact, the evidence linking DynCorp to bacha bazi was so damning, Afghan Minister of the Interior Hanif Atmar tried to quash the story. Upon hearing a journalist was investigating DynCorp and the U.S. government's funding of the sex trafficking of young boys in Afghanistan, Atmar warned any publication of the story would "endanger lives," and requested the U.S. suppress the story. Atmar admitted he had arrested eleven Afghans nationals as "facilitators" of the bacha bazi party. But he was only charging them with "purchasing a service from a child," which is illegal under Sharia law and the civil code. And in this case "services" is not used as a euphemism for sex; so far, no one is being held accountable for the young boys whose rapes were paid for by the U.S. taxpayers.

Are you sure? What about Obama's meeting with 10% in route to India...
Obama to meet Zardari during stop over in Pakistan
Islamabad—US President Obama during his stop over stay at Chaklala air base Friday evening on his way to India will meet President Asif Ali Zardari and will take the latter into confidence about his visit to India....
Official sources told Online Friday Pakistani leadership had been informed about president Obama stop over while president Asif Ali Zardari would receive the former.

Meeting between both the leaders would take place in VIP lounge at Chaklala airbase. President Obama would take on board President Asif Ali Zardari on the issues focusing on relations between Pakistan and India he would discuss with Indian leadership. President Obama would leave for India from Chaklala airbase.

It may be recalled that President Obama has embarked upon his visit to Asian countries. However his meeting with Pakistani leadership during the stop over ahead of his visit to India is being attached enormous importance.

From the first link posted above:
Moving to a more optimistic topic, Lavoy mentioned that political signals from India may indicate a trend of toned-down rhetoric against Pakistan. He said that although India believes without doubt that ISI supported the Haqqani network in orchestrating the Indian Embassy bombing in Kabul that killed over 40 people in July, Indian diplomats and politicians showed restraint in public statements. According to Lavoy, political leaders also seem to realize that India’s past tactic of using military pressure to influence Pakistani government to reign in militants may no longer work, especially if insurgent groups are operating against or independently of ISI. Despite this positive political development, Lavoy said India could do more to assuage what one PermRep called “Pakistani paranoia.” The Indian military continues “cold start” exercises on the Kashmir border, confirming the Pakistanis’ worst suspicions, he added. India would ideally move forces back from the border.

One shocking thing in the newspaper image two posts above is that how small is the headline describing death of 18 people in bomb blast in Kohat, w.r.t all other news. Looks like people are not that bothered, unless ofcourse its in Pakjab that it happens.

Europeans Criticize Fierce U.S. Response to Leaks

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/10/world ... react.html
The United States considers itself a shining beacon of democracy and openness, but for many Europeans Washington’s fierce reaction to the flood of secret diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks displays imperial arrogance and hypocrisy, indicating a post-9/11 obsession with secrecy that contradicts American principles.

While the Obama Administration has done nothing in the courts to block the publication of any of the leaked documents, or even, as of yet, tried to indict WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange for any crime, American officials and politicians have been widely condemned in the European news media for calling the leaks everything from “terrorism” (Rep. Peter T. King, Rep.-New York) to “an attack against the international community” (Secretary of State Hillary Clinton). Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates called the arrest of Mr. Assange on separate rape charges “good news,” while Sarah Palin called for him to be hunted as an “anti-American operative with blood on his hands” and Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and Republican presidential candidate, said that he should be executed.

For Seumas Milne of The Guardian in London, which has shared the latest WikiLeaks trove with The New York Times, the official American reaction “is tipping over towards derangement.” Most of the leaks are of low-level diplomatic cables, he noted, while concluding: “Not much truck with freedom of information, then, in the land of the free.”

John Naughton, writing in the same British paper, decried the attack on the openness of the Internet and the pressure on companies like Amazon and eBay to evict the WikiLeaks site. “The response has been vicious, coordinated and potentially comprehensive,” he said, and presents a “delicious irony” that “it is now the so-called liberal democracies that are clamoring to shut WikiLeaks down.”

A year ago, he noted, Mrs. Clinton made a major speech about Internet freedom, interpreted as a rebuke to China’s cyber-attack on Google. “Even in authoritarian countries, information networks are helping people to discover new facts and making governments more accountable.” To Mr. Naughton now, “that Clinton speech reads like a satirical masterpiece.

The Russians missed no opportunity to criticize Washington over the leaks. On Thursday, in Moscow, Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin said that the West had no right to preach to Russia about democracy. Asked about cables depicting him as the “alpha-dog” boss of a corrupt and undemocratic bureaucracy, he said: “Do you think the American diplomatic service is a crystal clean source of information?”

Mr. Putin then criticized the arrest of Mr. Assange. “If it is full democracy, then why have they hidden Mr. Assange in prison? That’s what, democracy?” Mr. Putin asked.

“So, you know, as we say in the village, some people’s cows can moo, but yours should keep quiet. So I would like to shoot the puck back at our American colleagues,” he said.

German newspapers were similarly harsh. Even the Financial Times Deutschland (independent of the English-language Financial Times), said that “the already damaged reputation of the United States will only be further tattered with Assange’s new martyr status. And whether or not the openly embraced hope of the U.S. government that along with Assange, WikiLeaks will disappear from the scene, is questionable.”

Mr. Assange is being hounded, the paper said, “even though no one can explain what crimes Assange allegedly committed with the publication of the secret documents, or why publication by WikiLeaks was an offense, and in The New York Times, it was not.”

The leftish Berliner Zeitung wrote that Washington’s reputation has been damaged by the leaks. But the reputation of U.S. leaders “is being damaged much more right now as they attempt — with all their means — to muzzle WikiLeaks” and Mr. Assange. They are the first, the the paper claimed, to have “used the power of the Internet against the United States. That is why they are being mercilessly pursued. That is why the government is betraying one of the principles of democracy.”

The Berliner Zeitung continued: “The U.S. is betraying one of its founding myths: freedom of information. And they are doing so now, because for the first time since the end of the Cold War, they are threatened with losing worldwide control of information.”

...

Russian officials, above all, seem to be delighting in the Americans’ embarrassment, with some suggesting that Mr. Assange get the Nobel Peace Prize. Dmitry Rogozin, Russia’s cheeky and quotable ambassador to NATO, suggested that Mr. Assange’s arrest demonstrated that there was “no media freedom” in the West. His “fate,” Mr. Rogozin opined, amounted to “political persecution” and a disregard for human rights.

Officials Pressed Germans on Kidnapping by C.I.A.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/09/world ... masri.html
American officials exerted sustained pressure on Germany not to enforce arrest warrants against Central Intelligence Agency officers involved in the 2003 kidnapping of a German citizen mistakenly believed to be a terrorist, diplomatic cables made public by WikiLeaks show.

John M. Koenig, the American deputy chief of mission in Berlin, issued a pointed warning in February 2007 urging that Germany “weigh carefully at every step of the way the implications for relations with the U.S.” in the case of Khaled el-Masri, a German of Lebanese descent. Mr. Masri said he was held in a secret United States prison in Afghanistan and tortured before his captors acknowledged their mistake and let him go.
Mr. Masri was seized on Dec. 31, 2003, as he entered Macedonia while on vacation; border security guards confused him with an operative of Al Qaeda with a similar name. He says he was turned over to the C.I.A., which flew him to Afghanistan, where he says he was tortured, sodomized and injected with drugs. After five months, he was dropped on a roadside in Albania. No charges were brought against him.

India like Brazil should quickly create an alternative card processor. Indian banks can form a consortium for an alternative.
Already happening. From econ times, Aug 2010:
Indian rival in works to take swipe at Visa, MasterCard
MUMBAI: Visa and MasterCard, the American giants that play a role nine out of ten times when anyone uses a credit card in the world, will face an unusual rival in India.

IndiaPay, a new state-backed payment processing platform, will be up and running within the next two years. Once it goes onstream, the IndiaPay card will not only dilute the dominance of Visa and MasterCard in the payment processing space, but also bring down transaction charges for banks.

At present, close to four crore plastic cards (credit and debit cards put together) are in circulation in the country, with the majority of them being serviced by the two entities. IndiaPay, being developed with Reserve Bank of India’s active support, will be India’s first indigenously developed card payment service provider.
Oh, read it all. And be assured, the cheenis certainly have their own payment processing systems, vendors and gateways - the entire ecosystem duplicated, in short.

Oops ......... deleted.

I see Rangudu got in with the story of the media of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan publishing fabricated Wikileaks cables most likely planted by the uniformed Jihadi’s of the military of the Islamic Republic in a bid to whip up anti India hysteria, first.

Food for thought: Had Julian Assange wanted to remain at large during this whole thing, I am pretty sure he would have been in Venezuela or maybe Russia at this point in time. Instead, he chose the UK, who are now holding him in detention, even though there are no charges against him anywhere (the Swedes only want to question him – he is not currently under indictment). It makes me wonder what he is holding over the Brits. I suppose we’ll find out in time, because there’s no way Wikileaks is going to run dry before it runs out all over the place.

We do indeed live in interesting times.

There were at least 4 Pakistani newspapers that were supposed to have carried the fake cables. One was The News. Who were the other three ?

I do not see anything to do with this story in the website of The News. Probably it has been removed hastily. I do not see anything in Dawn & DT sites as well. Did they ever publish this falsehood and retract later ?
