India-US Relations : News and Discussion
Re: India-US Relations : News and Discussion
According to NDTV, US Treasury has just declared several members of the LET & Harkat ul Muj as global terrorists, and ordered immediate freeze of their asses and assets. Clearly, timed to coincide with the Obama-Modi meeting.

Re: India-US Relations : News and Discussion
There won't be any boots on the ground especially when the fight is so far away and when the economic environment is weak. This is a full blown proxy war and our troops are ill equipped and under-trained to fight in that kind of environment. We also have to balance our relations with NATO, EU, and SCO. Throwing our troops in the middle of the action has the possibility of upsetting all of them. This proposition makes no sense. SSwamy sometimes says stupid things. We need to let go of this idea.

Re: India-US Relations : News and Discussion
Times Now is talking about a Javelin deal, any news of this how many and what is the value and what is going to be manufactured in India?
Re: India-US Relations : News and Discussion
So does this mean that vast majority of LET & Harkat ul Muj are "good terrorists" meaning they attack only India, but some members are "global terrorists" meaning "bad terrorists". Even ISI cannot come up with a better formulation.

Re: India-US Relations : News and Discussion
Just heard an American on TimesNow talk of GOTUS/Pakistan/Terror. I was distracted reading something on the net so my recollection may not be accurate. I thought he seemed to suggest that the GOTUS was nervous (may not be the correct expression) that India was not going to take the next attach lying down / was planning actively to do something with the appointment of Doval as NSA.
If what I think I heard is correct, it seems that the correct message has been delivered to TSPA and the GOTUS with the appointment of Doval ji as NSA.

^^That's a renewal.
It looks like there might be a separate agreement between the two navies as well... all info is coming from either TimesNow or NDTV, which I'm watching pretty much simultaneously...

Might be slightly off topic but see the karmic spinoff of the MOM mission and two interesting items on the comments section especially..

from comments
for me at least
1. I did not realize the view that the current Permanent Members are for those countries that fought in WW2. I am sure other BRFites members knew this already but anyway new angle to me..
2. See the perception that of the Kashmir problem being viewed as caused primarily as a Paki instigated and funded problem..
Who would have thunk it...

JEM,
Your first news made it to some msm here too... for example, Fox news had -
Treasury sanctions individuals, support networks linked to 2 Pakistan-based terrorist groups
Also, at ground level, cooperation between Navies, (and true for other branches too), of US and India, in last few years have been very very good. This is true after 26/11. I have some close relatives in US Navy and it is no secret that much has changed. I have met Indian Navy officers at a few gatherings, (There are navy officers who routinely come here for training etc and the cooperation is very good.).. I think technical cooperation between US and India (for example analyzing forensic evidence) was just better than what I would have imagined. (Yes.. Yes.. before some one jumps in and mention 1993 ..I know, US did not do too well in 1993.. but that was long ago)

I agree. This bonhomie is only on paper. On ground I do not expect anything to change. Obama is anyway going be a lame duck president soon. I have more expectations from Putin's visit to India than this bollywood show WH is putting up. I hope the second Akula-II deal and Pak-FA deals are signed soon.

Amber GJi.,
With all due respect sir, those are dog bones done possibly because those individual involved in LeT, Harkat have connections to "bad terrorists", i.e., the mighty Al Queda and/or ISIS. Why not name the entire orgs, why not ISI itself?
As I expected, as did many other, as this ModiJi's visit comes to end, it appears to me that this visit like may other Indian PM visits before is high on optics, style, but very little on substance. US NRIs got some thrills looking at a self confident Indian PM with a commitment to develop India, but I doubt US gives a rat's behind. TSP will be breathing a sigh of relieve if not laughing their asses off.
Now my attention shifts to Nobel Prize announcement to get a little thrill if some SDRE wins. I read somewhere that Prof. Ramamurthy in dept of physics at UCB (http://www.mse.berkeley.edu/ourfaculty/rameshr) has been shortlisted. Don't know if this DDM hype or there is something to it.

US establishment is *very* military dominated - I am willing to bet that a majority of politicians have a military background. IMO that is one of the main reasons that US establishments respect the countries that throw a whole bunch of uniforms at them. So military contacts at the deepest levels is key to wean the US uniforms away from TSP.
Re: India-US Relations : News and Discussion
I bet most of the future starred generals must have worked or working in Afghanistan. They have closely watched shenanigans of Pakis and are highly pissed off with Pak behavior. Just wait for these middle and lower rank personnel to morph into star and mid level afsars. I bet future Pentagon sees Pak with great contempt and hostility.RajeshG wrote:US establishment is *very* military dominated - I am willing to bet that a majority of politicians have a military background. Re: India-US Relations : News and Discussion
It is more about levels of comfort. Would a military guy like to deal with a uniform or a pure-bred politician. US political culture is a strange mix of democracy and military. While you have elected officials, most have worn a uniform at some point. I think I saw Gen VK Singh during the UN address wearing a normal suit. If he were to wear a uniform in all his interactions in US, I think the whole perspective changes.
For those not been to US, I have seen this many-many times. Passengers getting out of domestic flights. half a dozen or so military men/women in uniforms come out. And people start clapping spontaneously.
TSP's treachery is really nothing new to US establishment. They have known about this for years and years. Heck they were the participants during The Great Kunduz Airlift. And yet we are where we are..

Re: India-US Relations : News and Discussion
India should also have more soldiers in Afghanistan as soon as possible (at least a division worth to protect the investment) and should make some noise about threat of ISIS. India should also materially help Kurds.
Boxed in mentality since Ashoka the great turned pacifist is the real reason of our poverty. We need to hurt our enemies in their homes and not at Panipat or Chicken's neck in Kashmir or at Siliguri in Bengal. I wish Prithviraj Chauhan had pursued Ghauri all the way to Afghanistan in 990 A.D. and taken care of the business.

Re: India-US Relations : News and Discussion
There is indeed something going on: NOT A WORD on The Rapist Channel (CNN).news blackout on American media.
Might as well start the Official Explanation:
CNN ORDERED TO CLOSE DOWN INDIA OPERATIONS WITHIN 3 MONTHS
India has asked the US-based Chinese-owned News Network to cease operations in India by the end of 2014.
UBNC reports, quoting usually reliable sources who prefer to remain anonymous because they are not allowed to speak to the media, that India's government has exposed several violations of Indian law by the network. The network, known for the Pakistani / terrorist bias in its reporting, was exposed by the Indian Intelligence Agency. Several of its top executives are suspected of being paid or blackmailed by the People's Liberation Army, which has as a result infiltrated the entire news reporting and editorial offices of the network.
India pointed to a long and clear string of biased reporting, and linked it clearly to the acceptance of money from Chinese and Pakistani ISI sources. Faced with this proof, the Obama Administration has decided to act against the network as well.
The news blackout about the Indian Prime Minister's visit to the USA and the rousing welcome that he has been accorded by all segments of the US public, is a result of the top executives' anger at having been exposed. According to inside sources, the executives have banned editors from posting any more reports on India, because they are terrified of what the Pakistani terrorist-paid editors will do next, that will get them (the execs) in more trouble with the US and Indian governments.
CNN, like many other American organizations, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, which also owns the Jubilee Baptist Mission, the Oberlin Foundation and the Southern Baptist Convention, leading Conversionist corporations.

Another thing I have noticed is that the Indian mental model of Americans mostly comes from gujju banias/motel-owners, ITvity folks in bay area and Hollywood - mostly California/NY based perception. The US establishment OTOH is driven by middle-America. CA+NY count for a total of 4 senators - 96 come from elsewhere. North Dakota will count for 2 by itself. And that is where US military recruits ( to use Ms Fair's line of thinking ). A huge chunk of establishment might come from this area.

CA+NY count for 80 seats in congress though, while ND is 1. IMO, there is a difference between political and military establishment. While military service is valued and lip service is given, it is not enough to get you across the line these days. War heroes Kerry and McCain lost while draft dodger Clinton, non-military Bush and Obama won 2 terms each.

So Modi gifting a Gandhi version of the Gita to Obama: politically correct goody two shoes move, or Chankian? And Obama giving a personal tour of the MLK monument to Modi. Modi who is accused of being a violent warmonger but yet to start any wars, while Obama the recipient of a preemptive piss prize who has started 6-7 bombing campaigns. Left wing khujli at all this will be unbearable (for them the leftists, hilarious for the rest of us). But beyond them both giving a finger to the lefties, I wonder if Modi's gift was meant to make some sort of point about accusations against him coming from those who hardly practice it etc.
Re: India-US Relations : News and Discussion
I wonder if there will be a Modi dividend for me.
Not that I have influence on anything, but a bad govt in India has me worrying about things, BRF kind of things. It would be nice to know that India is in safe hands, and let me focus on other things. All purely psychological, but it really would be nice to reap a Modi dividend.

Guys, just curious what ya'll think, but on a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 meaning only hype and style, 10 meaning full substance (lot of business deals, real investment with tech transfer, concerns over terror addressed, real strategic partnership etc), where would you guys rate ModiJi's visit?
I would say 5.5 barely crossing the mid point (and with no fault attributed to ModiJi. Just the reality of US India relations).
And also, next couple of days, we will probably see a lot of cacophony in DDM, with Cong, AAP, and other assorted Modi haters in full throttle making a mockery of ModiJi's visit. Arnab might even have some Pakis and thrust down their throat that the joint statement calls for their surrender, in response to which of course they will piss all over him.
