The protracted Syrian conflict is destined to be a source of renewed friction between Turkey and Russia after a recent report suggests that Russia has deployed nearly 100 troops and military advisers in the northern Syrian town of Qamishli, located near the Turkish border -- a development that is bound to cause tension ahead of the Syria peace talks in Geneva.
The move to deploy military personnel in Qamishli, which is currently under the control of the Syrian regime and the Democratic Union Party (PYD), is likely to cause tension with Turkey, which has grown wary of outside powers' increasing cooperation with the PYD and its armed wing of Syrian Kurdish militia the People's Protection Units (YPG).
So, the Russians are aiming to build a military base in Kurd controlled area of North Syria. I am beginning to feel for Erdogan.

I am talking about the miscalculation he made in which that he could have Crimea for little cost by using force. He paid a very huge cost. He turned Ukraine into a hostile neighbor and any brotherly feeling between them is now gone, only to be replaced by long lasting animosity and hostility by Ukrainians towards Russians. Now he has to watch his southern flank right on its border instead of using Ukraine as an useful strategic buffer. Russia's hold on Crimea is still gingerly tenable because there is no direct landlink between Russia and Crimea and all infrastructure support still runs through Ukraine and has to rely on expensive methods of resupply and support by sea. To build a direct landlink means that the costs of doing so would equal the cost of building up Novorussiyk's naval base which would be far better than what was at Sevastopol. He could have gotten Crimea for little gain had he been more patience and more cunning. Blunt force was not necessary on Russia's part. By not taking over Crimea and allowing the anti western Ukraine movement to fully develop and nurturing it to a full blown insurgency in Kharkiv and Dnepropetrovsk, Putin could have actually separated Ukraine in half without using any Russian forces and once that movement does that, he could have gotten Crimea for a dime and Putin and Russia would be able to maintain plausible deniability.
You are simply assuming not doing any thing was the best option , you would have seen NATO at the doorstep of Black Sea Fleet.

Once the Nuland tapes were out every one knows and it stands in Truth today what that US/West wanted to have a puppet President and Prime minister and get the EU deal signed followed by NATO accession and the fact that they signed the Peace Deal with Ukraine ex Government and agreed Election in December and then let the riots take place after signing the deal and make president flee means any promise by Europe/US was only on paper

Note how in Yemen they allowed the President who fleed the country to come back as the righful person.

Invading and taking Crimea was the best option to keep Black Sea Fleet free from NATO and also the population was overwhelming Russian , Donetsk and Luhank are the buffer for them and no you cant join NATO if you have disputes with your neighbour thats the added advantage.

Economic problem is always temporary but 25 years from now if there is no NATO deployed in Black Sea would be thanks to decision taken that day no matter the cost.

It appears that Turkish troops fired at white flag waving Kurds. A series of short videos have surfaced.

https://www.rt.com/news/329793-alleged- ... -shooting/
Shooting of Kurds waving white flag caught on camera (GRAPHIC VIDEO)
Published time: 22 Jan, 2016 10:37
Edited time: 22 Jan, 2016 14:15

An incident in which several civilians with a white flag came under fire has been caught on camera. The victims are reported to be Kurds in the town of Cizre, where they were allegedly shot at by Turkish troops.
The series of short video clips published on social media shows a procession of people going along a street, pushing a cart with what appears to be two covered bodies. The walls of the buildings are dotted with holes, possibly from bullets. A tank is shown in the distance.

Then, gunfire can be heard as the people hunker down and run for cover.

Other footage shows several people lying motionless on the ground with blood spilling from them, as gasps and screams of horror come from the background.

The stated location is the Kurdish city of Cizre, which appears consistent with the Turkish-language graffiti shown in the video and the ice cream shop of the ‘Algida’ brand - which is only sold in Italy, Eastern Europe and Turkey.

RT could not immediately verify the circumstances of the shooting. One version claims that the Kurdish civilians were shot at by Turkish troops involved in a crackdown that Ankara is currently conducting in the south and south-east of the country.

Another version suggests that Kurdish militants were among the ranks of the civilians and opened fire at the Turks, provoking a response. The footage doesn't appear to show any armed people in the crowd.

The Turkish government in August launched a military operation in Kurd-majority areas, imposing curfews and clashing with fighters of the militant Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which is considered a terrorist organization in Turkey. At least 150 civilians and hundreds of fighters on both sides are thought to have died in the conflict.

The crackdown was criticized by international human rights organizations as disproportionate and a form of collective punishment against the Kurds. This week Amnesty International said Ankara is imperiling 200,000 people living in the areas affected by disrupting basic services, blocking their freedom of movement, and conducting firefights in residential areas.
The videos are embedded with the news report linked above. Disturbing visuals to say the least.

good article on home made weapons seen in syria

2013:
http://www.theatlantic.com/photo/2013/0 ... ls/100461/

Nearly two years after the start of Syria's popular uprising, the conflict has evolved into a slow-moving, brutal civil war with many players and no clear end in sight. Multiple rebel groups across the country continue to fight President Bashar al-Assad's forces, using any weapons they can get their hands on. While the rebels are using many modern tools, they've also come up with their own makeshift solutions. In these weapons workshops, anti-aircraft guns are welded to pickup trucks and armor shields are attached to machine guns and cars. Mortar shell nose cones are turned on lathes and explosives are mixed by hand. Homemade grenades are launched by jury-rigged shotguns or giant slingshots in the urban battlefields of Aleppo and Damascus. Gathered here are a few examples of the hand-built munitions of the Syrian rebels.

The world community only needs to get its useful idiots who believe in the fiction called "international law" to swallow their hypocritical BS -- that is sufficient to spin their central part in genocides and war as being for the "good of humanity" unlike the evil russians and the dark lord Putin. If there was actually any such thing like international law, there would be several american presidents and NSAs convicted for crimes against humanity in the past few decades. Laws that are unenforceable like this so-called International Law end up being another tool of the trade for countries that pretend to be the world's policeman and release annual report cards on "hyoomen rights in the rest of the planet (not including us)".

Barack Obama and the Americans not only allowed the rise of ISIS, they also provided them space to grow using american weapons and earn 100s of millions of $s from captured oil wells for 2-3 years, and now that Russia is working on stopping that, they make a show of taking down ISIS without actually doing nothing other than destroy some tin cans and throw bombs at random spots in the desert (as UBC news reveals with its usual high degree of accuracy).

In fact for long there was a debate on the point whether the international law is in fact a law in the first place. Last decade proved it is not a law. Any rule or set of rules are there for only the weak. The only law that is there is law of Jungle. We all now see it plain site.

Laws that are not enforceable are just tools for power politics, and that is exactly the case with power politics -- the countries with the larges militaries and economies can "enforce international law" without following said laws themselves...but just in the interest of not destroying the credibility of this fictitious "international law" in the eyes of morons in the "intellectual" and "academic" sectors all over the world, the subvert these laws in deniable ways. Create wars that can sustain themselves without any over involvement of the governments.

Syrian Army captures Tal Barouk in Deir Ezzor.http://www.almasdarnews.com/article/syr ... -captured/
Day 6 of the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham’s (ISIS) massive offensive in the Deir Ezzor Governorate did not have the same kind of success for the aforementioned terrorist group as their previous attacks did, thanks in large part to the influx of Russian airstrikes around the vast Euphrates River that separates the provincial capital.

In fact, for the first time since Saturday of last week, ISIS was unable to progress along any front near the provincial capital; this drastic change occurred in conjunction with the dissipation of firefights in the Al-Baghayliyah District in Deir Ezzor’s northwestern countryside.

ISIS’ inability to advance at the Deir Ezzor Military Airport paid dividends for the Syrian Arab Army soldiers fighting the terrorist group at the 137th Artillery Brigade’s headquarters near the international highway.
around noon on Thursday, the Syrian Arab Army’s 137th Brigade of the 17th Reserve Division – in close coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) – launched their own counter-assault from the strategic hilltop of Tal Kroum, attacking ISIS’ defensive positions at Tal Barouk, which is located to the west of the 137th Brigade’s headquarters.

Following a violent battle that lasted almost two hours, the Syrian Armed Forces were able to impose full control over Tal Barouk, resulting in the withdrawal of all ISIS terrorists from this hilltop.

According to a military source from the Syrian Arab Army’s 1o4th Airborne Brigade of the Republican Guard, the Syrian Armed Forces reportedly lost 11 soldiers on Thursday – he was unable to confirm the number of ISIS terrorist killed.http://www.almasdarnews.com/article/syr ... -captured/
