The Universal Struggle to Get to the Bar Before Happy Hour Ends

by Saba Imtiaz
It is 5 p.m. in Amman, and I’m frantically dialing my bank in Pakistan to complain why a transfer hasn’t gone through. My Urdu seems accented and strange, as if I haven’t spent most of my life speaking the language. Time spent in Ummah Country may do this !
I rush out of the house. It’s a Thursday night, the start of the weekend, and I want the same ritual as that of people working in offices everywhere–to get a drink. ( The "hot" kind or a cold drink !)I emerge to the beginnings of rain, and shrug on a jacket and wrap my head in a scarf. It’s April, and yet I am still dressing like early winter.
I almost run to the stop for servees cabs: the shared-taxi service that runs in older Amman neighborhoods. There’s a queue stretching down the pavement. The servees cabs seem to be practicing their version of surge pricing. One servees says it won’t go downtown. Behind me is a guy dressed in head-to-toe workout gear, and incongruously holding crystal prayer beads. So, definitely not an Ammani Eve Teaser![]()
We shuffle along in the queue. A guy passes by with a roll-on suitcase with a seemingly pregnant woman in tow, wearing a burqa and niqab. They ask for directions, and the queue is split between saying it’s a 10-minute walk and advising them to take a cab. They head off on foot. “Some people like walking,” says crystal beads man, to no one in particular. Making a pass to the Ayesha![]()
Do mom and dad- in Pakiland - know that beti has started drinking sharabI am itching to get going. What if happy hour is over and I have to pay full price—money I really can’t afford to throw away–for a drink?
A servees rolls up, and I don’t even care if it’s not going downtown. It’s going somewhere. Four of us pile in and pay the driver; a little over a quarter of a dinar for a ride that would cost four times that in a cab. I then take another servees to go to a different neighborhood. My head is throbbing slightly; I’m starting to wonder if the running around is worth it for a drink. Hope that she is a "social drinker" onlee and not addicted to the stuff![]()
I disembark at Café de Paris in the Jabal al Lweibdeih neighborhood. Nine years ago, when I last lived in Amman...
Now this district is where the hipsters and expats hang out, and Café de Paris is now a bar—all dark wood and old-school stools. In the corner, a street artist sips his beer. Are the Ammani Abduls on the look-out for "weekend company and /or " pickups"![]()
Hope someone from " back home " does not video it ( the "happy hour " ) on social media and transmit it back to Pakiland, where it goes viralI strip off my jacket and ask the bartender: “Is it still happy hour?” “Until 8,” he says. I could have taken my time, I guess, but I’m here now. My glass of red wine arrives. I watch out the window. Other people come in and light cigarettes. The staff brings in what seems to be a week’s worth of vegetables.
I take a sip. It’s okay wine, but this is my sole luxury this week. I am glad to not be home writing another pitch or checking my bank account. It’s finally 5 p.m., and I’m like everyone else, trying to let go.

Re: Sunni Terrorist Fragments of Unstable Pakistan - March 17, 2017
Since that fateful day at Sharm-el-Sheik, a decade back, when our normally taciturn PM suddenly found at a wrong time that he could in fact speak and said what he should not have said, Pakistan has been on a mission to paint India with the same brush that the rest of the world paints it with, terrorism-sponsor.
Ehsanullah Ehsan, the nom-de-guerre for all 'bad Taliban' spokesperson, is expected to mouth what the ISI has tutored him. In fact, it most probably is not any 'Ehsanullah Ehsan' at all; may be some Pashtun or even a fictitious character. Do we remember that the ISI engineered to send some inmate of a prison as a Taliban representative for talks with the Kabul Government? The US Marines even securely transported this cheat to Kabul from Peshawar and back !! Another such impersonator, once again sent by the ISI, assassinated Burhanuddin Rabbani, the Chairman of the High Peace Council.
Soon, China would say that Masood Azhar cannot be singled out for terrorism because both India and the US are at each other. This would be the logical progress in China's stance against India in the UNSC 1267 Committee. The dossiers are all being built up.

Fallout From Immy's "Big Mouth"
Imran’s bribery allegation stirs up a hornet’s nest

Imran’s bribery allegation stirs up a hornet’s nest

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chief Imran Khan’s incendiary allegation that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif tried to bribe him to not pursue the Panama Papers case drew a sharp reaction from the government on Wednesday.A day earlier, speaking to party members in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Mr Khan had alleged that PM Sharif had offered him Rs10 billion to back off from the case.During a series of TV appearances on Wednesday, he went further, claiming that the proposal came from a close friend of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif. Is he suffering from "foot in mouth" disease; he should now get ready for a lawsuit in a ( Non Sharia !) Paki Court !
Now, was he a student of "conspiracy university", Axaact University, or as he claims Oxford University. No wonder Scotland Yard did not believe his stories about Altaf BhaiAppearing in an ARY News show, he did not name the person that brought the “offer from the Sharif family”, but said it happened only two weeks ago, when the judgement in the Panama Papers case had been reserved, but not announced.“He is very close to [Nawaz Sharif’s] brother,” he replied when asked about the man who brought the offer. “He came to see me about two weeks ago and told me about the offer. Let me tell you that the Sharif family had even made him a very good offer and promised to ‘entertain’ him if he could convince me,” the PTI chief claimed.

The PTI chief lauded the Supreme Court judges who came up with such a judgement, despite knowing the Sharif family’s history.“They always want to buy people. They have a history of bribing people [to protect] their illegal businesses and vested interests,” he added.“This Rs10 billion was just a starting point; if I had showed some flexibility, they could have offered me more than that,” he concluded. Such "reckless" statements on TV will surely invite a lawsuit from Shahbaz! ( "clever brother" )
o refute the allegation, State Minister for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb held a press conference at the Press Information Department (PID) on Wednesday, where she criticised both Mr Khan and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), whose leader had also trained his guns on the ruling party a day earlier.Accusing the PPP of having drifted away from its ideology, Ms Aurangzeb, remained critical of Mr Khan, describing him as being “naive about politics”.“He is a juggler; he started with the slogan of election rigging, moved on to the phrase that an umpire is set to raise his finger, and has now resorted to criticising all state institutions, including the Election Commission and judges of the apex court,” she said. After branding Mr Khan “a liar” for making the Rs10 billion claim, she said the government was not interested in getting him to quiet down.

However, when Ms Aurangzeb was asked to comment on recent statements and anti-government rhetoric from the PPP, she stopped short of naming former president Asif Ali Zardari, saying the party seemed to have entered election mode a little early.Speaking to a public gathering in Malakand on Tuesday, Mr Zardari had termed the PM “Zia’s prodigy” and blamed his government for most of the problems KP was facing.
“The party has drifted away from the thinking of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto,” the minister said, adding: “It is so strange that the PPP is organising sit-ins in Karachi (where it is strong !) against the government — it should at least hold them in Islamabad. (where it is weak !)”

It is not the same guy. Compare these two photos of the TTP spokesman when he was "out there", with the one in the video. There are many differences - subtle - but many. His skin tone, shape of the nose, voice patterns and pakhtoon accent are all different - subtle but different. This guy in the video is a plant, a good plant. The real ehsanullah is dead somewhere, so the plant theory works.SSridhar wrote:Ehsanullah Ehsan, the nom-de-guerre for all 'bad Taliban' spokesperson, is expected to mouth what the ISI has tutored him. DW has this article on the pakis using confessional videos.
Ehsanullah Ehsan's India claims and Pakistan's favorite narrative
The Pakistani army's Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) department released Wednesday a "confessional" video of Ehsanullah Ehsan (main picture), a former spokesman for of the Jamaat-ul-Ahrar (JuA) and Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militant organizations.
But the main crux of the statement deals with Ehsan's accusation that India's intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and Afghan security agencies are backing the TTP and JuA.
But Arif Jamal, a US-based security and Islamism expert, told DW that Ehsan's video is part of the Pakistani propaganda.
"RAW did not create any terrorist group in Pakistan. They were all formed by the Pakistani military to start a jihad in India-administered Kashmir and Afghanistan. It is true that they later spun out of the military's control," Jamal said.
"Ehsan made several ludicrous claims as if he was not aware of his organization's policies. He was a top commander and a decision-maker himself."
Ehsan's India claims are similar to the Pakistani government's own accusations against New Delhi and its alleged support to terrorist groups in Pakistan.
Earlier this month, Pakistan sentenced Kulbhushan Jadhav, a former Indian naval officer, to death on espionage charges. Jadhav, who was arrested by Pakistani authorities in March last year, was later shown on TV "confessing" his role as an Indian spy.
After almost every terrorist attack in Pakistan, the civilian government and military generals point fingers at India, which many experts say is a convenient way to shift responsibility. Also, the military and politicians use the "enemy India" state narrative to keep the population in war hysteria, analysts say.
http://www.dw.com/en/ehsanullah-ehsans- ... a-38598246"The 'Indian agents' thinking is deeply entrenched not only in the mindset of our policy-makers, but also among the general public. Unfortunately, the media too promotes the 'foreign forces-did-it' narrative," Zeenia Shaukat, an activist working for a labor rights institution in Karachi, told DW.

Russia, India eyeing to tap Pakistan gas market
ISLAMABAD: As Russia fears losing markets in the European Union (EU) because of the ongoing tussle with the United States (US) and European Union over the Ukraine issue, it is looking to capture Pakistan’s market for exporting gas by laying offshore gas pipeline.
Russian is a big exporter of gas to Europe and Turkey and exports were at all-time high levels in 2017 following record-breaking volumes last year. Gazprom said gas flows to what it calls the Far Abroad – Europe and Turkey but not the ex-Soviet states – hit a new daily record of 621.8 million cum. Exports hit a total of 179.3 Bcm in 2016, a significant jump on its previous highest level of 161.5 Bcm from 2013 and well above the 2015 total of 158.6 Bcm.
Russian gas giant Gazprom has already signed a memorandum of understanding with Engineers India on conducting joint studies for a gas pipeline between Russia and India.
Gazprom-Engineers India Article
According to a Gazprom statement, the memorandum reflected the interest of parties in jointly identifying routes for the gas pipeline from Russia and elsewhere to India in addition to opportunities for cooperation in other areas.
Now, it is learnt, Russia conveyed to Pakistan that it wanted to build an offshore gas pipeline passing through Gwadar port to India to export gas and offered Pakistan to join this project, official added.
Officials said that a high level delegation from the Russian Federation, led by State Secretary and Minister of Energy Yuri P Sentyurin and Deputy Chairman of Gazprom A Vitaly Markelov called on Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources in early April.
Officials said that during the discussion, Russian side said they wanted to lay an offshore gas pipeline to India passing through Pakistan. Why should India have a Russian Off-shore Natural Gas Pipeline passing through Pakistan? They said that they could also supply gas to Pakistan in Gwadar through a pipeline if Pakistan showed interest. Officials said that Pakistan had also expressed a desire to join this project.
Pakistan and Russia had already signed a government-to-government deal for awarding the contract for liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipeline between Karachi and Lahore to a Russian firm for transporting imported gas.
He said that the two countries would enter into another deal of pipeline project for gas trade. Both sides are soon expected to sign a commercial contract for materialising the project.
Earlier, Russia had assisted Pakistan’s largest hydrocarbon explorer, Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDC), in the search for energy resources.
In addition, Pakistan also planned to import LNG from Russia by virtue of a government-to-government arrangement.
The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has already given the go-ahead for starting negotiations for the gas import deal with Russia.
Cheers

) from the possession of a gang of smugglers, comprising Chinese ( CPEC engineers ?) and Pakistani nationals.
Who is going to "take the side" of the "poor animals"; these animals seem to be "collateral damage" in this lucrative black market trade. Is there a functioning Animal Rights Organization in Pakiland or according to the Book , animals are less worthy !On the basis of a confirmed information that a huge stock of hides, intended to be smuggled to China, by a group led by accused Tu Zhong Xiao and stored in a shop located in Gulistan-e-Jauhar was raided, said concerned police officers in a media briefing.
During the process, 592 sacks, each containing eight donkey hides, were said to be recovered while each hide was estimated to be worth Rs. 25,000 in international market.
The officials did not deny of every possibility that meat of donkey slaughtered to acquire their skin may be sold to local population as halal flesh of cow or buffalo. ie. sold as "beef"![]()
"We have to curtail the trend to not only prevent unwarranted elimination of donkey population, but to also protect any further loss cause to national exchequer," said the police inspector Muhammad Asim. Is donkey trade under the purview of the CPEC![]()

CheersPolice have arrested a man armed with several knives in Whitehall on suspicion of planning a terror attack.
The suspect was carrying a rucksack containing at least three knives when he was detained “following a stop and search as part of an ongoing operation”, according to Scotland Yard.

ISLAMABAD Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf has been barred by the Election Commission of Pakistan from using the bat as its electoral symbol. The decision is a result of PTI’s failure to hold intra-party elections in 2016.The ECP, however, added that till the political party successfully conducts intra-party elections, it will not be assigned the 'Bat' symbol for any elections in future.Late last month, the ECP stressed that PTI was ineligible to be allotted the 'Bat' symbol to contest for any election under sections 11 and 12 of the Political Parties Order (PPO) 2002.ECP officials said the Commission had withdrawn the ‘Bat’ symbol for PTI in the upcoming by-elections in Chakwal. It is noteworthy that PTI last conducted intra-party elections on March 23, 2013. PTI like the other major political parties ( like PML - Nawaz . and PPP - Zardari ) is a one horse party . Siraj expresses concern over reports of secret meetings regarding Kashmir
LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Sirajul Haq has expressed deep concern over the reports of secret meetings on Kashmir but has warned that the nation would not accept backdoor diplomacy or secret talks on this vital national issue.Talking to different delegations in Islamabad on Thursday he said that talks with India on Kashmir should be held in broad daylight and the Kashmiri leadership must also be invited as a necessary party. He further said that relations with India could not be normalised unless the Kashmir issue was resolved. Probably making a reference to Ganja's meeting with Jindal !
He condemned the fresh loans of two hundred billion dollars from foreign banks on heavy interest rate. the rest of the "complaints" are OK , but obviously the maulana is not familiar with numbers) He said that the rulers had already mortgaged the future of the country and the nation. He said that it was due to the corruption, luxurious living and plunder of the rulers that the country was burdened under heavy loans.
He said that at present almost 60 percent of the Gross National Product (GNP) was going to the payment of interest of International Monetary Fund and World Bank loans due to which the national economy was on the verge of collapse. He said that if the rulers went on securing more loans the entire GNP would be spent only to clear the interest on loans and nothing would be available for national defense and other vital needs. Siraj is hung up on defense , but what about the welfare of the Paki people. Is that also not his concern !
He reiterated that if the prime minister did not vacate his office, the joint investigation team (JIT) investigations would be marred by doubts. Therefore, he said that the prime minister should resign and appear before the JIT as a common accused.Every top political leader like Imran and Dus Percenti and every bottom rung Aam Abdul like the neighbourhood Christian bhangi is baying for Ganja's head due to his "Golmaal" in the Panama case![]()

We should absolutely explore selling power to Pak.
We should trade with Pak which strategically benefits us. We should import goods that would otherwise be environmentally devastating for us to produce, like sugar/sugarcane. We should export goods which are critical to them, and which can be turned off at a moments notice to choke them if the need arises, like electricity.
Exporting electricity also has the benefit that it undercuts their own investments, especially the CPEC funded plants. Let them commit to a lot of capacity, then let's enter the market and undercut them.
Despite all the jingoism here, the fact remains that as we cut ties we have fewer and fewer levers by which to pressurize them. Strategic trade is one such lever - we don't need Shaan masalas and Lahore fashions, but if we pick and choose carefully this can be a winner for us.
Wouldn't it be fab if we can produce hydro power in Kashmir from the rivers assigned to them under IWT and sell them the power?

Despite all the jingoism here, the fact remains that as we cut ties we have fewer and fewer levers by which to pressurize them. Strategic trade is one such lever - we don't need Shaan masalas and Lahore fashions, but if we pick and choose carefully this can be a winner for us.
Wouldn't it be fab if we can produce hydro power in Kashmir from the rivers assigned to them under IWT and sell them the power?

I am sure the government can work out a payment mechanism as well. We can all use an American or for that matter a Chinese bank to settle in.
Or we can do as we did during the Soviet times - barter. If the sugar shipment appears impure, drop the frequency of the power we supply to 48Hz. (Now that I said in jest).

We should trade with Pak which strategically benefits us. We should import goods that would otherwise be environmentally devastating for us to produce, like sugar/sugarcane. Nepal Police Investigates Disappearance Of Pakistan National .
Nepal’s internal security journalist KP Dhungana report on the case of the retired Pakistani Colonel who went missing
Nepal’s internal security journalist KP Dhungana report on the case of the retired Pakistani Colonel who went missing
Mohammad Habib Zahir, a retired Colonel of Pakistan Army went missing in Nepal sometime back. Special Bureau, Nepal Police and District Police Office, Bhairahawa district are actively searching for him. Since the last 22 days, units under the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Bhairahawa district are trying to locate him but they are yet to get any clue as to his whereabouts.
Special Bureau of Nepal Police is a dedicated team that investigates cross-border crime and terrorism. The same unit had tracked down terrorist Yasin Bhatkal in the Pokhara district of Nepal.
Habib entered Nepal as a tourist on 6th April. As per information provided to the Foreign Ministry of Nepal by Pakistan’s Embassy officials, Habib had contacted his family back in Pakistan after reaching Bhairahawa district. He is missing since then. Pakistan’s Embassy informed the government of Nepal on the third day after Habib went missing. Nepal’s Foreign Ministry informed Nepal’s Home Ministry and since then the police is trying to find him. Till now there is no clue about his whereabouts. RAA conspiracy.![]()
Ex ISI! very efficientAs per information provided by the spokesperson of Nepal Police, SSP Sarvendra Khanal, a special team had been immediately mobilised to search for Habib. However, no information about him has been found as yet. According to investigating officers, it has been established that Habib arrived in Nepal on 6th April. He had travelled from Pakistan to Oman on his passport bearing number AJ5122964. Flight records indicate he reached Nepal via Oman. Chief of Western Regional Police Office, DIG Madhu Prasad Pudasaini confirmed that as soon as Habib landed in Nepal he took a domestic flight to Bhairahawa on Buddha Air. According to Pudasaini, record of Habib has been found at Bhairahawa airport. No clues have been found as to where Habib went after checking out of the airport.

In Pakistani media, there are claims that Habib has been kidnapped by Indian intelligence agencies. But the investigations carried out till now in Nepal don’t prove it. Bhairahawa district is close to the Indian border.![]()
The reasons cited for Habib’s visit to Nepal are suspicious. According to the information shared by Pakistan’s embassy, Habib had told his family that he came to Nepal for an interview for an UN post. However, UN has no office in Nepal where foreign nationals are employed. The claims that he came to Bhairahawa for the said interview is also under suspicion as there is no UN office in Bhairahawa.
The information that is emerging is suspicious and it seems that someone called him to Nepal as a trap. An investigating officer said that someone had called Habib to Nepal and no clues as to where he disappeared since is available yet.

MQM Workers Are Labelled "Indian Spies" !
Ongoing crackdown on political party MQM in Pakistan. Again accused of working with Indian intelligence

Ongoing crackdown on political party MQM in Pakistan. Again accused of working with Indian intelligence
By Aveek Sen
MQM is one of the major political parties in Pakistan. Seen largely as a party of Mohajirs (those Muslims who migrated during partition from present day India to Pakistan, the founder of Pakistan Jinnah being one), it is probably the only left leaning party that has an electoral foothold in Pakistan. It still continues to dominate Karachi, Hyderabad and certain other pockets of urban Sindh with PPP dominating rural Sindh. MQM was often seen as a kingmaker in cases of hung parliamentary verdicts during previous years.
Syed Ali Raza Abidi, member of Pakistan’s National Assembly representing political party MQM Pakistan told me that during the last 3-4 years, 700-800 political workers of MQM have been arrested on similar counts of “working for foreign intelligence agencies”. The charges were bailable but it generally took one to one and a half year to secure bail. He added that judges were hearing habeas corpus pleas by family members of missing persons from MQM. Police came up with the claims that the MQM workers fled to India so that they could evade producing them in court as is the norm. Blatant lies to justify the "disappearance"[/quote]
Further Wasay Jalil, member of the Central Coordination Committee also known as the Rabita Committee confirmed to me that since September 2013, 125 MQM workers have gone missing since the Rangers operation started under the tenure of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He added that prior to 2013, even in the past MQM had faced similar situations. 72 extrajudicial murders have taken place during this period. He added that from 1992-2002, more than 15,000 MQM workers have either been murdered or extrajudicially murdered. And the Pakistan ISI has succeeded in creating different factions, but unable to break Altaf bhai's hold on the party
He then went on to explain the situation. He said that we Mohajirs have relatives in India. During the course of the Rangers operation, many MQM workers have been to India to visit their relatives and returned. They are are all branded as Indian spies. He stated some specific cases. Even under the National Action Plan (NAP), after taking someone into custody it has to be disclosed within a period of 90 days. As per international obligations, they have to anyway be produced in court within 24 hours. On 12th of October, 2013, another MQM political worker named Irshad who was working with the Health Department under the City government was picked up by the Rangers and he’s missing to this day. MQM worker Nadeem’s body was found dumped in the bushes with his hands tied behind his back after he was missing for 4-5 months. 3 parliamentarians have been murdered by Taliban in their present tenure. MQM has been under a sustained crackdown and he expressed sadness at the same.

I have a feeling this is an effort to get Kulbhushan Jadhav released. Also see above report about Nepal Police launching an investigation into ISI officer's disappearance coinciding with Jindal's visit. Also see the report about Pak saying consular access request will be considered. If Jindal comes back with a positive message about Jadhav, we will see Nepali investigation making progress with promising leads.anupmisra wrote:Indian tycoon Sajjan Jindal meets PM

I couldn't make out if you were being sarcastic. A few years back, traders on our side sent goods but never recd payments; I read the news item right here on BRF. These were probably small or medium sized exporters but selling power/electricity is huge, usually hundreds of millions of USD. Do we want to give credit to these turds? For a country that goes around with a begging bowl and lives on a foreign dole, paying the kaffir Hindoo bania will not be a top priority. If we can find ways to make this work, pakis will equally find ways to skip/delay/avoid payments.yensoy wrote:Did that sound funny?la.khan wrote: Did you mean this in jest? Here's a thought, go to Attari. You will see hundreds, no thousands of trucks there, ferrying stuff back and forth. These traders have figured out some way to make it work, and to collect money. For barter to work, those turds have to produce something we need. Off the top of my head, pakis produce terrorists, soccer balls, cricket items, surgical tools/implements, cement, cotton, basmati. Anything I missed? Nothing that desh really needs.
While prepaid transaction in USD may work, do they have USD to pay for this? I don't think so. While this may sound good on paper, this may be a non-starter. Sometime back, there was talk of selling diesel engines to paki railways. Nothing came of it; this may end up in the same dustbin.Bart S wrote:It would have to be a prepaid SIM type transaction, except that they would pay in dollars.
