Ladakh supports Jammu

Thupstan Chhewang, Ladakh Union Territory Front (LUTF) MP from Ladakh, has said that the developments in Jammu vindicate their struggle for a separate Union Territory status. He has lent support to the Jammu movement and blamed the Kashmiri leaders for trying to misrepresent it.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Mr Chhewang has said "the current attitude of the Kashmir leaders of all hues has convinced us that our own movement for securing a Union Territory status is justified. It has again reinforced our conviction that we want to be directly administered by New Delhi"

"It hardly bears any reiteration that extremely popular agitation in the Jammu region has since brought into sharp focus the larger issue of political empowerment of the people of the region. The people are convinced that they will continue to be discriminated against till all religions are considered equal in the real sense of the word," Mr Chhewang has said, adding: "There are instances galore to prove that Jammu has been treated as a poor cousin of Kashmir. It hurts the most."

He has ridiculed the argument that the construction of temporary pre-fabricated huts at Baltal would destroy the environment. He has described this plea as "fallacious" which is "all the more so when it is advanced by those who have made a mess of the Dal Lake right under their nose inspite of getting financial aid worth crores of rupees."

Mr Chhewang has pointed out: "Everybody has seen and heard that the voices that have been raised in the Kashmir valley against the allotment of the land to the Shrine Board are those of Islam and Pakistan. They are outright communal and anti-national. How can they be invested with credibility to blame a popular Jammu movement as communal? Why should they be permtited to be raised in the first place? Why should we continue to give the impression that we are a weak democracy?"

I think it is time for GOI to straightenup its back and make decisions...

- Announce Jammu, Ladakh, and Kashmir regions as three separate Union Territories
- Splitt GOI's financial resources between the regions equally. With the baby breeders at work, it will mean more per capita investment in Ladakh, and atleast focussed growth in Jammu regions. Let us feed the pigs for some more time...
- Abrogate Article 370 in Jammu and Ladakh regions
- Make a deal with the top 5 business houses to start meaningful employment creating projects
- Keep special forces presence in K-valley.
- Let the tamasha continue...

If our leadership had decided to lose that peice, it is worthwile to keep it as long as we can even by force.

And let other regions assimmilate with rest of India... so no more jammu Vs valley game. Make it India Vs valley equation... that will bring necessary critical mass from rest of india....

Perhaps Arunkidhoti can learn something from the Ladkhi's letter, a non-Hindu and thus, in her simplistic worldview, more credible.

Amarnath: Row or Right

Written by Neeru sharma
When the Kashmiris cry Azadi they get support from world, but when people from Jammu demand their rights they are communal. Does anyone in their right minds question this fallacy and many others that have been propagated by the separatists and their supporters, the so called mainstream parties? Does anyone have the guts to question why Jammuites are so agitated, without showing their guilt and professing the cause of Kashmir? Will the likes of Arundhati Roy be rebuffed and punished for their misplaced sympathies? Will the Centre take a tough stand on separatists and put an end to the route of terrorism? Will they realize that Jammuites are the ones who want to remain with India? Who will answer all these Questions, I wonder.

I opened my eyes among journalists and Kashmir was the talk then. Now forty years after still the same question of plebiscite still hangs like a sword on India’s head. Can I question the well wishers of India how long can they keep Kashmiris happy by fulfilling all their logical or illogical demands? The conditions have changed since Plebiscite was pledged. Pakistan continues to be in occupation ofm POK and the minorities and nationalists have been driven away from the valley. Plebiscite cannot be held on such unfair ground. Should those who have grown up in an atmosphere where they can talk of Azadi, shout plebiscite? Do they think that in Pakistan people are allowed to do that? One after the other the Pakistani leaders have become the icons of suppression. Before asking for plebiscite a team of young Kashmiri’s should be sent to Pakistan to see the ground reality. They should be made aware of the true picture of Pakistan. Let them see and decide. Don’t let these selfish politicians use your back to step on the throne. They are befooling you if they say you will be better off in Pakistan. Just take a look at what their statistics show. Decide what is good for you and your coming generations. Had they not exploited you J&K would have prospered but they have shattered the economy. They get house arrested while you are fired upon. They understand everything but whenever they see the opinion shifting they cry Pakistan Zindabad , resulting in the death of innocents.

Don’t they ever realize why the Pakistani artists are so keen to perform on the Indian soil? Why does Adnan Sami want to live in India? They are recognized here for their talent and treated as Azad people. They know better where Azadi is a reality. Ask any common Kashmiri what Azadi means to him or her. Ask them whether they would like to go to Pakistan or stay with India? High time these leaders of Kashmir conduct a survey(authentic) and come to conclusions. They are in the habit of shouting Pakistan! whenever they want anything from India but beware, now Jammu people wont be fooled. You will have to come up to their expectations or perish.

On 20.8.08, in an interaction among the intellectuals and the press, Mr A K Sahni read out the legal papers- orders etc- of the successive governments on this matter, and even a non law person like me was able to see the amount of confusion these people have created. They have been unable to take one stand on this issue, both PDP and the Congress, and in turn have revealed their true feathers. The utter confusion resulted in the downfall of Congress in Jammu and PDP will loose its grounds in Kashmir. Since there will be no other option NC may take a lead as we can feel from the tone change of Farooq Abdullah yesterday(20.8.08). Jammu still has to come up with a leadership. That is what is lacking here. The sustainable struggle for rights of Jammu can only be fought when after solving this row we address the other points of discrimination. First would be stressing for delimitation and bending the government on that. The civic leadership that we are seeing today has a long battle to rectify 61 years of injustice with Jammu. Will this leadership be able to do this , staying clear of politics or will the strength we are seeing today in Jammu die a sudden death after this land row is solved?

I hope this pressure continues till Jammuites are given their due, till all misdeeds are rectified, till all these selfish leaders are replaced by responsible ones, till our children learn to fight against injustice and for their Rights. Amarnath has become a symbol of unity and a fight for the RIGHT.

Nehruvianism fuelling separatists

The other voice: Alok Goswami | Associate Editor, Panchajanya

Its baffling how secular society is actually encouraging people in Kashmir valley to burn the national flag

What we have witnessed in the Kashmir Vally over the past few days has clearly brought to the fore the total failure of the Congress-led Centre in containing the handful of separatists who were languishing in Srinagar. The Pakistan sponsored anti-Indian Hurriyat leader, Sayyed Ali Shah Gilani, the most hardcore of the lot, minced no words in proclaiming in front of mammoth crowd in Srinagar that he is a "Pakistani Gilani". Other Hurriyat leaders have come out openly to challenge the authority of the Centre and state governments. Terms like "you Indians", "your government", "your Army" are openly thrown about, even on the so-called "national" TV channels of India.

The scenes emerging from the valley are reminiscent of the partition days when the Muslim League divided the sub-continent on the basis of the two-nation theory. The saving grace was Sardar Patel's far-sighted vision, which led to Jammu and Kashmir remaining an integral part of India.

The ongoing agitation of the SASS has acquired a pan-Indian dimension and has become a fight against secessionism. It is a struggle to weed out the anti-Indian pschye that had been allowed to flourish for over 60 years by pseudo-secular politicians. Article 370 of the Constitution of India, since its inception, has abetted the separatist mindset of the pro-Pak elements in Kashmir valley. Congress leaders at the helm of affairs in New Delhi saw it as an instrument to appease their vote bank. The close proximity of Nehru with the then leader of Kashmir Plebiscite Front and later Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Sheikh Abdullah, ensured a tacit understanding between New Delhi and the valley on a number of issues including maintaining a distance from rest of India.

A close look at the resolution passed by the Kashmir Plibescite Front on April 7, 1957 will reveal the acute anti-India stance of Sheikh Abdullah. On August 20, 1953, a joint Press communiqué issued between the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan, minced no words in stating that "The most feasible method of ascertaining the wishes of the people(of J&K) is by fair and impartial plibescite".

It is Article 370 which restricts the Indian State from exercising complete control over Jammu and Kashmir. That is why the Hurriyat opposed the state cabinet's earlier decision to give a plot of only 39-hectares of forest land at Baltal to erect makeshift accommodation for Amarnath pilgrims and that too for only two months against payment of a huge rent.

It created so much discontent in the minds of separatists that the coalition government fell. While bowing out, Ghulam Nabi Azad was heard saying that his coalition partner, the People's Democratic Party (PDP), was in the payroll of "separatists". If that is so, then why did the Congress enter into a coalition with the PDP in the first place?

The Centre, which had earlier distanced itself from this thorny issue saying that it was a "state matter", could easily have handed over the land to the Amarnath Shrine Board after clamping President's rule. Instead, it deliberately allowed the Kashmir valley people to spread their lies and propaganda. The "blockade" bogey was bogus. Yet, against all evidence to the contrary, the Delhi-based TV channels mechanically parroted the Hurriyat's claims about "medicines and baby milk powder" being "denied" to the people of Kashmir. If a blockade was really in force, then how the Hurriyat leaders get petrol for their cars? Why didn't the Centre, which never loses an opportunity to pamper pro-Pakistan elements, fly supplies to Srinagar?

Once again, our pseudo-secular media must take the blame for fuelling anti-India feelings among the Kashmiris. Also played its dirty part in fuelling the separatists' cause. Day in and day out, the channels reported the Amarnath agitation news in such a way that it was made to appear that the land dispute was a ruse invented by the "communalists" in Jammu. This was picked up by the Pakistan as proof enough of the justifiability of the separatists' cause and they went ahead and internationalised the whole issue.

The separatists now claim that Kashmir is azad and the common Kashmiri Muslim has been roped in the name of Islam and Kashmiriyat .The Centre's deliberate silence is making things worse. The Congress-dominated UPA fears that they might loose Muslim votes if they don't take sides with the separatists.

This is more or less a repeat of the 1989 situation when the Rajiv Gandhi and VP Singh governments maintained total silence as thousands of Kashmiri pandits were forced to leave their ancestral homes to save themselves from murder and rape at the hands of jihadis from Pakistan.

Last month, we celebrated the 107th birth anniversary of one of modern India's greatest sons, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukerjee. He had resigned from the Jawaharlal Nehru cabinet to take to the streets to fight the secessionist designs of the Kashmiri leadership. In 1953, he went up to Srinagar defying the then-prevailing permit system and urged the people of the country to stand unitedly. He gave a clarion call that India is one from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India where a separate flag, a separate constitution and a separate Chief Executive can never be allowed.

Today, India once again needs to be reminded about the values of patriotism. It is only through patriotic zeal that we can keep this country united.

Curfew lifted in Jammu, Samba districts
Jammu, Aug 23 (PTI) With improvement in situation, curfew was today lifted in Jammu and Samba districts even as talks between the group spearheading the Amarnath agitation and a panel set up by the Governor to resolve the vexed issue began here.

However, curfew remained clamped for the second day on the border town of Hiranagar, while it was relaxed in Kishtwar town for six hours.

Curfew was imposed in Hiranagar yesterday after protesters turned violent and torched a truck parked in the police station complex following the arrest of a youth.

Six persons were injured as police fired tear gas shells and cane charged the protesters who forcibly released the youth from the police station.

Army had conducted flag marches in the town yesterday.

Day and night curfew has been lifted in Jammu and Samba districts, while only day curfew has been lifted in Udhampur town from 0500 hours to 2200 hours to facilitate people to celebrate 'Janmastami'.

Meanwhile, the meeting between the Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti (SASS) and the four-member panel appointed by Governor N N Vohra to resolve the vexed issue began here.

The Samiti had yesterday said that it would talk to the panel only on the subject of land and its restoration to the shrine board and on its independent functioning.

The authorities have released one of the persons who was arrested for protesting against registration of a case against some members of their community in connection with an attack on a chemist shop and assault on a person on Tuesday.

However, another person identified as Daleep Kumar continues to be in police custody under the Public Safety Act (PSA), sources said. PTI
Sangharsh Samiti talks with J&K Govt ends, panel likely to meet again
Jammu, Aug 23 (UNI) The first round of dialogue between the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti (SAYSS) and the Jammu and Kashmir government representatives ended here today after more than an one-hour long discussion with no results yet, as the members are likely to meet this afternoon again for talks and find out an
amicable solution to the ongoing Amarnath land controversy.

''The dialogue with the Governor's panel started amidst a congenial atmosphere and they tabled some of the proposals before us, but it is too early to disclose them,'' Brigadier Suchet Singh, one of the constituents of the Sangharsh Samiti committee told reporters.

Brigadier Singh, however, said that the Samiti discussed nothing short of the restoration of land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) with the panel appointed by Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra.

''We are hopeful of positive results as the next round of talks is likely to be held this afternoon with the state administration to find out solution to the prevailing situation and the land issue,'' one of the Samiti members told UNI.

No shortage of medicines in Valley
Srinagar, Aug 23 (UNI) There is no shortage of drugs and medicines in the private and Government health institutions of the Valley, a spokesman for the Jammu and Kashmir Health and Medical Education Department said here today.

The availability of drugs and medicines was again reviewed this morning by the Commissioner and Secretary, Health and Medical Education Department.

He said a team of officers headed by Deputy Controller, Drug and Food Control Organisation conducted a survey of the availability of drugs and medicines with the chemists and druggists and found that sufficient stocks of medicines were available with them.

Besides, supplies were also being received by road and by air.

During the last week 15 trucks carrying medicines of various pharmaceutical companies have arrived in Srinagar, with more trucks coming. Besides, consignments of various drugs are also being received by air.

The Principal, Government Medical College, Srinagar who supervises the associated hospitals in Srinagar city, has reported that there is no shortage of essential drugs in any of the hospitals of Srinagar.

The stock of life saving drugs is likely to suffice for four to six weeks. Additional supplies are also being received by road and by air, the spokesman added.

He said in cases where a specific item is required under some compelling circumstances the same is immediately procured from the local market, where is available. Availability of anesthesia drugs has also been reviewed and found to be sufficient for two to four weeks, he added.

The Director, Health Services, Kashmir has already issued annual supplies to the health institutions under his control in the month of May and June. Besides, this, reserves are also available in the provincial stores at Srinagar for distribution to the health institutions as and when needed.

Villains of the Valley
Let there be no dispute over this simple fact: India is being banished from the Valley of Kashmir. Separatism is the mildest of words one can use to describe the soaring hate, which continues to be further accentuated by the flags of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan fluttering over erupting streets.
A divided Kashmir shows how far we have come in disowning the nation. If in the Valley it has exposed the communal instincts of the so-called mainstream politicians and provided an easy cause to professional separatists, in Delhi it has brought to the fore the UPA Government’s art of selective secularism—an art that has to be perfected on the eve of elections. It is as if the entire political class needs the prism of religion to see a Kashmir they can comprehend. They have set the stage for those for whom India is only a second thought to play out their secessionist agenda.

Solution in sight as Amarnath Samiti, Govt work out peace draft

http://www.zeenews.com/articles.asp?aid=463879&sid=NAT

Jammu, Aug 23: In a possible breakthrough, the Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti (SASS) and the four-member panel set up by Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra to resolve the Amarnath land row are reported to have agreed on a compromise formula. After two rounds of talks, sources said that it has been agreed to allow the Amarnath Shrine Board to use the controversial 100-acre land in Baltal for three months, during which the Holy Yatra will be held.

After two rounds of talks between the SASS and Governor’s panel held in the morning and the afternoon, sources said that it has been agreed to allow the Amarnath Shrine Board to use the controversial 100-acre land in Baltal for three months, during which the Holy Yatra will be held.

Sources further said that both the Governor’s panel and SASS are framing a draft which will be approved by the 21-member Samiti spearheading the campaign in Jammu.

It is also believed that an agreement on the reconstitution of the Amarnath Shrine Board has been reached, with security during the pilgrimage to be managed by the state.

The two rounds of talks held today were the first between the SASS and the government since the agitation in Jammu began nearly two months ago, following the cancellation of the order transferring 40 hectares of land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB).

Earlier in the day SASS members said that they were hopeful of a "positive outcome". During the first round of talks in the morning, the government had put forward a proposal which Samiti had agreed to consider and revert back.

"We hope that some positive results will come out," Suchet Singh, leader of the SASS said after the talks aimed at ending the nearly two-month-long violent agitation that has paralysed normal life and sparked a counter movement in the state.

Between the two rounds of talks today, SASS representatives who met the Governor’s panel held talks with the rest of the Samiti members to apprise them of the government’s proposal.

The four-member panel had arrived here from Srinagar yesterday after the Samiti on Aug 19 agreed to hold talks with it, days after it spurned a similar offer for negotiations.

A five-point agenda had been set for the talks in the invitation sent from Raj Bhawan to the Samiti which included reconstitution of the SASB, fleshing out, in appropriate details, the role and duties of the board, assessment of the total requirement of land by the Board and working out an arrangement for use of 100 acres of land at Baltal-Domail with the board during the period of yatra.

Mike misses the big party
Saturday August 23 2008 02:22 IST
Aditya Sinha

We assume our nation is in the hands of the wise, the balanced, the judicious, the magnanimous, and the visionary. Instead,we find ourselves at the mercy of luminaries like the National Security Advisor, M K “Mike” Narayanan. No wonder that there are parts of our nation intent on tearing themselves apart.

Though Mike has so far escaped the opprobrium that commentators have heaped on Shivraj Patil (one called him Minister for Rome Affairs, so easy a target is he), this column cannot help but commiserate with Mike. Because of a bunch of damn protestors in Srinagar and in Jammu, he has had to miss out on the jamboree in Vienna, where India’s top minds were trying to convince the 45-member nuclear suppliers’ cartel to allow India to do nuclear commerce.

For Mike, the nuclear deal has been one long party. He got to travel the world, rub shoulders with the Americans, and soak in the limelight in Washington DC, Vienna, Singapore, and other world capitals — all the while trying to make the case for allowing India to inhabit an existential twilight zone where it would become the not-fullybut- only-sort-of-declared-yet-still-non-proliferating nuclear state.

As he has been dealing with an issue involving the ultimate currency of human power, you can’t blame Mike for feeling a bit like Major “King” Kong, the air commander who straddles a nuclear warhead as it is launched at the climax of Stanley Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove or:How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. You can just picture Mike, a big missile between his legs, humming to himself: They like me in London/ They love me in Berlin/They hugged me in Moscow/And also in Beijing. It’s a heady thing.

It’s not surprising then that Mike does not have time for Kashmir, for Maoists, for Islamist terrorists, or even for the former Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf. (Come to think of it, even Mike’s boss doesn’t seem to have time for anything besides the nuclear deal. Come to think of it, who IS his boss — benefactor Sonia Gandhi or Prime Minister Manmohan Singh? Things are so murky, no wonder Mike prefers to hang out in Vienna rather than in the Valley.) The irony is that Mike, the only person to twice serve as the Intelligence Bureau’s chief, doesn’t even have time for India’s intelligence community.

No wonder, then, that one of our spies tried to kill herself. Nisha Bhatia of the Research and Analysis Wing had complained about a senior officer offering her money for sex (he was probably trying to exploit the fact she is a divorcée with children). At one point, Mike ordered an inquiry into her charges. After all, the accused had a history of complaints against him; he was thrown out of the RAW and sent back to his state cadre. Yet Mike is a busy man, with little time for the grinding wheels of justice; Nisha lost confidence in the panel and was “erratic” in her evidence, and she took the extreme step. The RAW’s response was to sack her. It has been a near-tragedy that Mike has no time for.

Things have been no better at the strategic intelligence agency itself, where the current chief, Ashok Chaturvedi, is a universally proclaimed dimwit. A couple of years ago, he was superseded by some good officers because he was seen as a potential liability. When Mike became NSA, he wanted to clean up the spy agency. He brought in a new chief, P K Hormese Tharakan, over the heads of long-serving, competent officers, one of whom took early retirement. Tharakan served out his term, the RAW remained as useless as ever, and then Mike played his master-stroke: he elevated Chaturvedi to the top job. This inexplicable move would not be so bad if, for the past four months, word had not spread that one of the IB’s best officers,Kashmir-specialist N Sandhu, was going to be the new RAW chief; not only has it not come to pass, but it has left the RAW, the IB, and even Sandhu, completely irritated.

One could argue that these are merely administrative matters, and that the real issue is Kashmir. It has been over four years since the UPA took power, and what has Mike done vis-à-vis Kashmir? For comparison, just look at the bad news, anti-Muslim BJP: as prime minister, A B Vajpayee made several gestures towards a political settlement, including a famous handshake offer in Srinagar to Pakistan; even his deputy L K Advani had two back-slappingly cordial meetings with the moderate wing of the separatist All Parties Hurriyat Conference.

In addition, the Americans had leaned heavily on Musharraf to seal a deal with India on Kashmir. Musharraf was the first Pakistani head of government to openly state that borders could not be redrawn; Musharraf repeatedly called for “out-of-the-box” solutions; Musharraf privately leaned on the Hurriyat to seal a deal with India; and even Omar Abdullah, chief of the eternally mainstream National Conference, had a one-onone meeting with Musharraf during a March 2006 visit to Islamabad, and returned to India convinced that we should do business with “the General.”

The irony is that after Musharraf resigned on Monday, the ever-taciturn Narayanan told a Singapore newspaper: “Whether he is impeached or not is not important from the Indian point of view... that leaves a big vacuum, and we are deeply concerned about this... It greatly worries us…” Perhaps the protests in J&K woke Mike up to the fact that he had just missed a great window of opportunity (open long and wide from 2004 to 2008). The time was obviously spent wringing his hands over the nuclear deal; in the bargain, he neglected to hammer out a Kashmir policy. And now, things have spun so out of control that even Omar speaks of debating azadi instead of discussing autonomy.

Admittedly a Kashmir policy does not get formulated overnight, and though it took the NDA two years to have their own policy, each government’s approach does not vary too much from the others. (The NDA bettered even the USA, which always appears to begin working on the Palestinian problem in the final year of each Presidency.) Mike has not even attempted a Kashmir policy; after all, who has time for all those autonomy reports, expert committees, valuable suggestions and friendly advice? The people can’t be fooled forever, however, and if anger has exploded in both Srinagar and in Jammu over a barren 40 hectares, it’s because the people know they’ve been neglected by rulers who aren’t in the least bothered.

Mike has to thus stay home and pay the price for his neglect. As the nuclear deal nears being clinched, Mike’s buddies like Shivshankar Menon and Anil Kakodkar jetset to the cool climes of Vienna and Washington, while Mike has to douse the fires in Jammu and Srinagar. And poor fellow, he has no clue as to where to begin. This column has a suggestion. Mike, go and seek out the wise, the balanced, the judicious, the magnanimous, and the visionary; and let them run the show

Kashmiris are in India out of their own free will
India’s legal right in J&K hardly needs any elucidation. It springs from the fact that Maharaja of the state acceded to the Indian Union. How can the right of self-determination exercised by a generation be allowed to be challenged by the next?.
WHILE PAKISTAN has been mounting a large scale propaganda campaign to project to the world its cause in Kashmir, we in India seem to have done little beyond affirming and re-affirming that Kashmir is an integral part of our country and that it will be defended at all costs. This gives an impression that our case in Kashmir is only that of possession and our ability to hold it by force. In actual fact, however, India alone has legal as well as moral right over Kashmir and Pakistan’s case is only that of a thief shouting ’thief thief’. The Indian government has, apparently, failed to project its case not only to the world but also to its own people within and outside the state. Little wonder that even sixty years after the state acceded to the Indian Union, a section of the Kashmiris continue to challenge this accession with impunity.

India’s legal right in Jammu and Kashmir is very clear and hardly needs any elucidation. It should suffice to say that this right springs from the fact that the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir acceded his state to the Indian Union. Under the Independence Act of 1947, the ruler of a state, and he alone, could decide, which of the two dominions to join or whether to remain independent of both. Legally the states’ peoples’ right to self-determination was not part of the process of accession of states. The question of the right of the people to decide, which way to go did not even figure during the discussions between the viceroy and the leaders of the Congress and the Muslim League, on the June 3 (1947) plan, which formed the basis for the Indian Independence Act of 1947.

This is not to deny the importance of the moral aspect of the people’s right to self-determination. The point that needs to be made is that the issue of self-determination of the people never arose before Lord Louise Mountbatten, the viceroy of India, suggested to the Maharaja, during his visit to Srinagar in June1947, to ascertain the wishes of the people before taking a decision in the matter of acceding to one dominion or the other. There is also nothing on record to show that the people of Jammu and Kashmir ever demanded any right to self-determination in the matter either before or after Mountbatten’s suggestion. The people did, nevertheless, express their opinion favouring one option of the Maharaja or the other. The Jammu based pro-Pakistan section, though more vociferous, was, without doubt, in a minority, while the majority appeared to favour the other two options of independence and accession.

It may also be noted here that between the two dominions concerned, it was only India that took up the cause of ascertaining the wishes of the people on the line suggested by Lord Mountbatten. Self-determination was, thereafter, to become more a matter of creed for the Indian leaders than an instrument of policy. When the Prime Minister of Kashmir, Pandit Ram Chandra Kak, approached Sardar VB Patel, (well before August 15, 1947), to discuss the possibility of the state’s accession to the Indian Union, the former was categorically told by the latter that no talks could take place without the association of the representative of the people of Kashmir. So strongly were the Indian leaders committed to the principle of self-determination that they had it conveyed to the Maharaja, through Mountbatten, that an accession of the state to Pakistan on the basis of the wishes of his people would not be taken amiss by India.

For Pakistan, on the other hand, the support for self-determination was to be a matter of convenience rather than conviction. It turned a strong votary of self-determination only after it failed to secure the accession of Kashmir through force of arms. Before this, even as the Maharaja was still weighing the pros and cons of his difficult options, Pakistan never raised the issue of ascertaining the wishes of the people. Jinnah openly proclaimed that the discretion lay entirely with the Maharaja and that the people of the state had no right to question his choice. As a matter of fact, being convinced of this legal aspect, Pakistani leaders had then found it necessary to woo the Maharaja by promising him Sikkim like status in Pakistan with no requirement for delegating any of his present powers to the people. The Maharaja, naturally, spurned the offer.

With reference to Sardar Patel’s correspondence, it can be shown that the Maharaja was not, after all, undecided on the issue of accession right till the state was invaded by Pakistan, as is generally presumed. Apparently, he had begun to show his inclinations towards an accession to the Indian Union much before August 15, 1947. The reason why the accession could not be brought about early was that while the Indian government insisted that the accession was to be brought about only with the ’cooperation of Sheikh Abdullah’, who as the leader of the largest political party in Kashmir, could justifiably be considered to represent the voice of the majority, the Sheikh sought time to satisfy himself about the ground reality in this regard before taking a decision in the matter. The accession was also delayed when Sheikh Abdullah set about to extract terms, as a price, for his "cooperation" towards accession of the state to the Indian Union on the basis of the wishes of people – such terms as the Pakistani leaders had refused to concede for securing his support on the state’s accession to Pakistan.

Whatever may have been the situation with regard to the wishes of the people of Kashmir on the accession issue before Pakistan’s invasion of Kashmir, the Kashmiris’ support for the accession to the Indian Union became glaringly visible after it. Firstly, Sheikh Abdullah had personally endorsed the decision of the Maharaja to accede to the Indian Union. Secondly, even though there were no troops of the state force available for internal security duties in Srinagar during the crucial five days while the request of the Maharaja was being considered at Delhi, the city remained calm and peaceful – not a single soul stirring against the proposed accession of the state to India in face of the Pakistani invasion. Thirdly, having witnessed the ’rape of Baramulla’, there was a visible sense of relief among the Kashmiris when the first batch of Indian troops landed at Srinagar. The Indian troops who were seen as saviours were accorded a big welcome by the people and it was only local assistance that enabled the troops to move from the airfield to the battle front. And, fourthly, during the Indo-Pak military conflict that followed, the Kashmiris, without exception, supported the Indian Army whole-heartedly in its efforts to drive the Pakistani raiders away from Srinagar.

The Indian leaders’ obsession with the principle of self-determination had been so great that even after Kashmir had fallen into their lap as a result of the Pakistani invasion of the state, they went to the ridiculous extent of making the acceptance of the accession provisional and subject to the condition that ’as soon as law and order have been restored in Kashmir and her soil cleared of the invaders, the question of accession should be settled by a reference to the people’.

The rationale behind India subsequently complaining to the Security Council about the Pakistani invasion of Kashmir when the invaders were on the run and could have, in any case, been cleared out of the state within a matter of weeks, is beyond comprehension. But even more difficult to understand are the compulsions that led the government of India to commit itself to a plebiscite in Kashmir as part of its complaint to the world body regarding the aggression committed by Pakistan. Be that as it may India had to, in the bargain, accept the cease-fire, which enabled Pakistan to retain the major part of the fruit of its aggression. How Pakistan scuttled the UN sponsored plebiscite to save its gains of aggression is an interesting story, which forms a subject matter for a separate article.

That the accession of the state to the Indian Union had the full backing of the Kashmiris is also proved by the fact that for the next four decades and more, there never appeared more than a minuscule section of the people that ever disputed the state’s accession to India, or demanded a further right of self-determination at the behest of Pakistan. On the other hand, the Kashmiris gave a big rebuff to Pakistan during the Indo-Pak war of 1965.

This lack of people’s support to Pakistani infiltrators is authoritatively cited in world military circles as one of the major causes of Pakistan’s military failure in Kashmir. Then in 1971, again the Kashmiri people stood solidly behind the Indian Army. What further proof is then required of the fact that the people have already exercised their right of self-determination by opting for the Indian Union. Now, how can the right of self-determination exercised by one generation of people be allowed to be challenged by the next? If that were to be allowed there would be no end to this exercise and every country in the world would become vulnerable to dismemberment. Is Gilani listening?

I write this with a heavy heart in the distant land. I am struggling to find news related to India and kashmir situation. I have some questions before i proceed to further..
[*]What is India? It it an idea only in mind/thought?
[*]Why should kashmir be such an issue?
[*]Isn't it truth that some 500 princely states signed up on the behalf of their populace to be part of India?
[*]Only because Kashmir is muslim majority, that's why it should be given autonomy or whatever - special status?
[*]By this logic, why not Khalistan? Why not Bangistan - adding parts of Assam to bangladesh?
[*]Why should article 370 not be removed and let it assimilate?
[*]If this tamasha was to happen and some lousy armchair psedo-secularists/intellectuals were to decide the fate of this nation state, why my brothers fight and die for it?
[*]Who has given this government right to represent indian people? With the 50% voting and congress getting 30% popular vote, it comes to mere 15% of the population representation?
[*]Who has given journalists like Barkha dutt/Vir sanghvi the right to talk nonsense and liberty to represent India?
[*]Isn't this the incompetence of Shivraj patil and MMS? The moment jammu people call for their rights they become communal?
[*]Does secularism mean only appeasing Muslims?
[*]Why not one law for all citizens?
[*]Should we not throw out all muslims into bay of bengal and then into pakistan. Country was devided on religious terms- right?
[*]Are we a nation of wimps? America fought a deadly civil war to assimilate, Britain fought some 400,sorry 600+ years with Ireland to assimilate and still on. Russia still fights in Chechnya, China in taiwan for 60 years and we endorse such stupid and inane ideas.

Let me clarify, I have great friends in muslims and I am an avowed athiest. I firmly believe it's been couple of million years since 'God' last visited. All my muslim friends in Chicago are furious. 4 months back , I wrote and article and then only I had mentioned that India needs to be wary of Barkha dutt types.
The danger to India, is not from these islamists or fundamentalists, It is from these pseudo secularists. In this country, If a neighboring farmer ploughs 6 inches of land from field, generations spill blood for that 6 inches. You all are giving solutions just like that. We are trying to justify and analyse Arundhati Roy, who thinks she is representative of india(after writing a semi ***** novel) named peice of s---- and Barkha dutt. Let me say on this forum(Now I am surprised and sad you call it Bharat Rakshak)'there will be blood'.

chandrabhan,
Nice way you put all that into words. Except for throwing Muslims out. India was and is a secular country, while Pakistan was supposed to be secular Islamic state. Its another matter that it turned out to be different.

There is a news again. State govt is asking all the employees belonging to Jammu region serving in Kashmir (who were whisked out "for holidays" last week) to report on or before Tuesday. I wonder what made Kashmir safer for Jammu people so quickly.

My Apologies Acharya Sir,
Should I start with the definition of ' Bharat' given by King Bharat - our forefather? He made no distinction in the faiths. The question I want to raise is, Are we a religion, culture or a race? IMHO I have always believed we are one culture and one assimilated race (Aryan, Drivadian, Shaka, Huna dos not matter). We are son's of Bharat - Period. History was my subject for UPSC so I read it. I have read 14 purana,3 Veda and 2 upnishads. apart from usual , Valmiki ramanyan and Mahabharat.
The point I am trying to make is that
[*]Does democracy mean, I shoot my mouth off?
[*]Does it mean beinf responsible for nothing?
[*]Who are the keepers of Idea called India?
[*]Are we identifying, who is trying to play soft diplomacy and testing waters by floating baloons like that?
[*]When will this stop?

My two brothers serve in defence forces, I have lost 2 of my Doon classmates in kashmir and kargil. My father fought 3 wars- 1962,65 and 71. I know the histroy well enough. My grandfather fought in INA with SC Bose. Apologies once again but seeing all this , I just cant stay out here and am itching to come back.

Hi Baljeet sir,
I read that article however I have a request. I feel ashamed that i grew up idolizing him studying Economics in DU. My countrymen please do this for the sake of nation... I am furious and just wondering why Rahul is quiet till now and not raising voice. Why are defense chiefs quiet? They too are citizens of this country and have all the rights to seek good governance.
Protecting the motherland is their right as well as ours.

It will be a good thought to try and make RSS establish themselves in the Valley. The presence of RSS will certainly bring about some change in these guys.

poll about what exactly ? "polls on MMS" isn't very enlightening.
we could of course have a "no confidence/confidence vote" on the govt of the day but I'm not sure what purpose that'll serve.
anyway, politics by itself is still NOT allowed on BRF.

There is your answer my friend.

We did not have to fight for our freedom , infact they say we go it via AHMISA :rotfl: .
And you see the root cause of all the above issues which you enumerate traces back to 'AHMISA' and the individual who preached it.

In the present context 'secularism' is an extreme case of communalism , it is infact an exact equivalent of communism the only difference being while former wishes to engineer the society on economic terms the latter lays emphasis on religion and no marks for guessing as to who coined the term. :) .What is noteworthy is both fail miserably unless you enforce it on gun point.

And then another great soul took this to another level and infact re-engineered the cast system , this time on paper and boy have we kept the tradition flying high.

Yes Atish Sir,
In those days of reforms in 1992 he was almost a demi god delivering India from these fabian Idiots(socialist). Later on I became disenchanted with him as I realised that the biggest bane of India was having good economists who basically had no moral courage to stand up against the illogic of the ruling class. They in way gave credence to the nonsense of Nehru an then Indira by being standing with them - Shackled the spirit of a nation in myriad of rules and permits.

One more article calling the bluff.. KMs have gone overboard this time and people are just disgusted.

http://indiatoday.digitaltoday.in/index.ph...nid=23&Itemid=1
Last week Kashmiris mindlessly marched again calling for azadi. It was as if the arithmetic of economics didn't apply to Kashmir. As if someone will always pick up their bills.

In October 2002, India Today computed that in 12 years between 1990 and 2002, Jammu and Kashmir got Rs 35,571 crore in grants assistance. I revisited the numbers. Grants from the Centre doubled to touch Rs 38,156 crore in five years between 2003 and 2008. The extent of pampering is revealing.

In 2007-08 the contributed a princely sum of Rs 533 crore as direct taxes to the Centre and received Rs 1,471 crore from the Central tax kitty and Rs 8,962 crore in grants. Its own revenue of Rs 2,299 crore will not cover the salary bill of Rs 4,389 crore.

Even without Jammu and Ladakh, azadi unsustainable. To sum up, of Rs 16,267 crore spent last year, two-thirds or 65 paise out of every rupee came from the Centre. This year the state will spend Rs 17,354 crore of which Rs 11,510 crore or Rs 11,510 per person will come from the Centre.

Compare this with the Rs 700 per capita that Uttar Pradesh gets. Worse, Uttar Pradesh will 70 per cent of the grant while Jammu & Kashmir only 10 per cent.
Economics meisters whats the prognosis?

kashmir has the 2nd or 3rd highest per capita income in the country.
look at all those pakis with azadi flags on the street - are they hungry,
or ill-dressed or looking thin ? they eat and drink well up there and then
spit on the hand feeding them.

and this is after the 'local leaders' steal hundreds of crores from central
money every year.

Ramana,

There is oodles of data to prove that the State - especially the valley - is not a economically viable entity.
Unless they bring back tourism, attract capital both from other Indian states as well as FDI, etc.

See the planning commission report for example (from 2003):
Jammu & Kashmir

However, the hurry-rats the paid agents of the pukejabis will not rest until they have reduced
all of J&K to a state of penury!
The idiot "fruit growers" waving green flags are too dumb and stoned to realize this in time!

The Valley junkie is just that - a drug addict to the pan-national Islamism.
We need to quit being enablers and providers of their dirty habit - that needs political will!

Perhaps Jammu, Ladakh and Shia pockets can provide the necessary impetus to our
muddle headed politicians.

I think Geelani is acting under US controls. He claims to be a a Paki but it is rhetorical Paki like JFK was a Berliner. He can be under the TSP/ISI control as they are still trying to regroup after the Mushy out of office caper. Things were under control in J&K and then they simmer and then boil. Its a pattern in J&K from day one. Geelani is operating a false flag/red herring ruse. Don't know why but he is.

http://corruptionremover.com/corruption-in-india.html
Among the states, Kerala was found to be the least corrupt in public services with the next four positions being taken by Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. On the other side of the spectrum, Bihar was found to be the most corrupt state, closely followed by Jammu & Kashmir.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/arti ... 257265.cms
Confirming a survey that put Jammu and Kashmir as number two in the list of most corrupt states of the country, the state's accountability commission has registered over 100 complaints in short span of one month.

Over 100 complaints of corruption and nepotism have been registered by the commission since its formation last month, commission sources said.

This corroborates the survey conducted by the Transparency International, an international NGO, in association with the Sociology Department of university of Jammu that J&K is number two after Bihar in the list of most corrupt states.

One more reason why this state needs serious overhaul. Most of govt. jobs and prime property even in Jammu is held by KAshmiri Muslims.
First mall opens in Jammu and is named Kashmir mall

Sounds like a workable solution, this would pen in the traitors and we should then withdraw all subsidies, pamper Ladakh and Jammu instead to show who gets rewarded, they will come to heel in a trice. We can even withdraw special forces from K, let them kill each other sinc ethey have chased away all real Indians, just keep our Army on the border to protect the territory.

GoI can slowly start with the delimitation process.

BJP wants delimitation exercise taken up in J&K
While Jammu with a population of 28 lakh had only two Lok Sabha seats and 37 assembly seats the valley with a population of 25 lakh has three Lok Sabha seats and 46 assembly seats.

I think the main problem with Kashmiris is their inexplicably strong belief in some promised land, Azadi. As long as that promised land remains undefined and one is told the whole time, it smells of roses, and there people of Simple Islamic Minds (SIMs) get instant Dignity, the pull of that promised land on the hearts would remain strong. No amount of reasoning helps. The more one provides reason, the more the suspicious mind think the Devil wants to keep it from the fruit of his Desires.

What is needed, is that the simple Islamic minds live less in India and more in the Promised Land. The Promised Land should become a part of their everyday lives. Now and Here.

So what I propose is that the horrors of Talibanisation should be fed daily to these SIMs. Imagine a 24 Hour Channel showing broken bodies, bloodied faces, etc. of all the victims of the Taliban, showing the siege mentality under which the people live in the Pushtoon Lands, the daily burnt up girls-schools and the fear in their eyes, the headless corpses. That is the face of the Promised Land.

Those are the images with which the Kashmiris should be saturated with? All India needs to do is to give publicity to the deeds of the Taliban. Send Pakistani reporters to cover all these deeds! Let these reports be broadcast to the Kashmiris.

No Music. No Films. Just Taliban reports. The mood will change.

Since the Kashmiris cannot be beamed into the Promised Land, the Promised Land needs to be beamed to the Kashmiris.

There have been some articles on some concepts that the human brain has 3 levels

Reptile brain at the core with an overlay of mammal brain with an overlay of human brain

--

Islam tends to hardwire the reptile part of the brain

So while the human brain may see an advantage in staying with India and getting all these grants and freebies,
And also see the mess TSP is in

The hardwired reptile brain sees only jihad, sharia, darul-islam
