nandakumar wrote: the link between natural disasters and rising fertility is a somewhat nuanced one. natural disasters tend to destroy wealth. for a society that is fundamentally very poor is ill-qequipped to undertake remdiation measures and hence only accentuates the level of poverty in the society. now link between poverty and high fertility or its counterpart affluence and low fertility has been explored in some detail in social science literature. i recall an article by an Austrian who acquired an Indian name (agehananda bharati) in the now defunct illustrated weekly of india. he writes off how as a faculty teaching in one of the american universities asked his students to write about india's population problem. one student wrote; 'indians play too much in the night and hence the result'. agehananda bharati remarks that he wrote on the margin of essay, 'they don't and hence the result'. at one level it was a response in levity and yet at another more fundamental level it does reiterate the link between prosperity and fertility.
The postulate here is:
Natural disasters accentuate poverty
Poverty is associated with increased fertility.
Therefore natural disasters cause increased fertility
To me this sequence requires a leap of imagination because I have not read about such an indirect link anywhere.

Poverty per se should not lead to increased fertility. In fact it works the other way. Removal of poverty (wealth) is associated with increased literacy and increased literacy is linked to decreased fertility.

Decreased fertility is seen with increased literacy and vice versa Poverty is associated with low literacy. That may be one link between poverty and fertility. The reason is that literacy teaches women how to space childbirth to maintain their own health and that of their baby. Spacing births automatically reduces fertility. It is wealth (and associated literacy) that are associated with decreased fertility if my memory serves me right. Literacy is untouched by natural disasters, but access to birth control measures may be affected. That could be another reason for increased fertility.

But in the case of Pakistan - I see this whole "Natural disaster-increased fertility" theory as a straw man that is being set up (like 15,000 bridges and 25 million miles of highway) precisely to make excuses at some future date. When Pakistan fails to reach prescribed goals for fertility and maternal/infant mortality - some Paki will say "Oh we are having increased fertility because of floods and poverty - so give us money and don't ask us to meet any goals. It's just not possible". The only thing "natural" here is Pakistaniyat.

How Pakistan forced the ICC’s hand

An excerpt from the article
Traditionally, Pakistan have refused to accept any guilt for their actions, or that of their nationals. For proof, look no further than a certain Ajmal Kasab. There’s evidence in still photographs and on security cameras of Kasab being part of one of the most heinous terrorist acts in recent memory. Have you heard an admission of guilt?

Well, then, why do you expect any better over the trifling matter of a few no-balls for cash?
A farlly accurate read from a member of DDM. Is seems to be written by some BRFite. The modus operandi of TSP nationals and gobermound. Hell with rules and regulations. When cought with the hand in cookie jar, Deny, deny, deny. Claiming it to be RAW Konspiracy. Like there HC did in Londonstan.

SS Guru,

I seem to have gotten into a habit of getting on your wrong side. :P

On a serious note, even if he was not exiled like Nawaz Sharif he is still in a self imposed exile in Londonstan. Moreover, his return will not really be of any benifit to the TSPA at this juncture. As he had left the presidency in disgrace as a result of the mass pressure in TSP.

The continued rule of Zardari gets the TSPA every thing they need (US AID military and civillian ) with the fig leaf of a democratically elected govt. Why remove the cover with the return of Musharaff when its continued existence is not detrimental to the interests of the TSPA. In any shape and form.

This is what I had wished to convey in my original post.

The answer is that if the case is taken to its logical conclusion,as I've posted earlier, the trail will lead to the PCB and Paki army HQ,who control the matchfixing along with their partner "D",sojourning under ISI protection in Karachi.

I've said much the same about Paki brazenness. The Pakis, even when they're caught with their hands in the till, bomb in the briefcase and pants down, deny, deny, deny, everything, whether there is written evidence, pictures or even videos catching them in the act. They then when caught blame India for all their woes, from their treachery and backstabbing,to floods, earthquakes, whatever and then expect to be treated like the Moghuls,Caliphs and Nawabs of yore."God's greatest gift to mankind is a Paki".That is the mantra of the TSP and their insidious, parasitical, uniformed clique, who run the country, ruin the country and are a pestilence to the entire world. After all their perfidy, they next expect the world to pick up the tab for all the evil committed,"otherwise....."and the blackmailing begins. Here is news of even more devilry to come!

Pakistan Taliban threaten attacks on US and Europe
A senior commander in the Pakistan Taliban last night announced it was planning terror strikes against targets in the US and Europe similar to the Times Square bomb plot

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne ... Europe.htm
By Rob Crilly in Islamabad
Published: 8:30PM BST 03 Sep 2010

Injured people lie down on road after an explosion during a Shiite procession in Quetta Photo: AP Qari Hussain Mehsud, who commands suicide squads for the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), said he was proud that the US had added his organisation to its international terrorism blacklist on Wednesday.
And he and promised a fresh wave of attacks that would resemble the attempted Times Square bombing earlier this year.
PS:The answer in dealing with Pak is to treat the nation and its rulers like a contagious disease and cease all contact with the state,as if it were a remote island, far from civilisation, allowing it to rot and decay by itself.Let the Pakis feed upon themselves and sort themselves out in an orgy of bloodletting, which is happening every day without any external effort! It is so obvious from this latest shameful scandal that any contact with Paakistan brings sorrow with it.

^^^The conections of Butt and co are irrelevant, the only thing that matters to the PCB at this time is the H&D of TSP. By denying the aligations and evidence in support of the aligation and challanging the actions of ICC. They wish to show the mango abdul in TSP that there is still H&D left in Paki Cricket. As they surly don't have any left on the Cricket field.

If the Pushtuns in the tribal regions of Pakistan are being bombed by the Americans using their drones, the Pushtun also have a right to strike back in the homes of the Americans.

The Quetta toll goes upto 63. There's something that i just don't understand about Pakis, they are now all too familiar with attacks on large crowds esp. made up of minorities,so whats the point in being suicidal and allowing the bombers to target practice? There could be just once explanation : Probably most of them are lured into these 'protest' marches driven by promises of free food and money..

Pak diplomats embarrassed by 'loose cannon' Hasan
London, Sep 4

Pakistan's High Commissioner to Britain Wajid Shamsul Hasan has been branded a 'loose cannon' by the diplomats of his own country for his outbursts against the International Cricket Council in the 'spot-fixing' scandal.

.......

But diplomats at the Pakistani legation in Belgravia are less then amused by his stunning remarks with one of them saying that he felt "depressed" by Hasan's statements to the media.

"I suppose it is quite funny for outsiders, but the rest of us find it embarrassing. Anyway, it'll backfire, I have my own contacts among journalists and I am told they (the News of the World) will produce more things on Sunday," a diplomat was quoted as saying by 'The Independent'.

The unnamed diplomat said Hasan's claims have not just caused embarrassment, they have created a sense of anger against Pakistan.

The PCB-PA-Match fixing/spot fixing nexus is just one more in the long list of a glorious Pakistani State behaviour. Just think about the brazen and mind-boggling number and variety of criminal activities that Pakistan gets involved in as a State, not just as individual citizens.
  • Aggression & terrorism on India
  • Nuclear & missile proliferation both horizontal & vertical
  • Support for brutalization of Afghanistan through the Taliban including destruction of the heritage Bamiyan Buddha statues
  • Support and refuge for worst terrorists of the world such as Osama, Mullah Omar, Ayman Zawahari, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Omar Syed Sheikh, Dawood Ibrahim, Prof. Hafeez Saeed to name a few
  • Worldwide narcotics trade with the Taliban
  • Genocide against its own people in East Pakistan and Balochistan
  • State-authorized discrimination, massacre and human-rights violation of religious minorities
  • Continued State support to UN-banned terrorist outfits, especially LeT & JuD
  • The deep nexus between the Pakistani armed forces and the terrorist organizations
It is doubtful if any other country with all these dubious criminal records and behaviour would be handled with kid gloves as Pakistan has been over the decades.

Pakistan PM to meet opposition as flood aid dries up
Flood waters are receding similarly the funds are receding too.
Good job so far by everyone.
So far, just $47 million have been donated to a relief fund set up by Gilani, far below the $43 billion damage estimate he had given on Wednesday.
what groper wants all the $43 billion. :rotfl:

what is the solution
hold an international beggar conference in Isloobad for more begging
Pakistan is planning to hold an international donors conference in Islamabad within the next two months.

The players, the legal advisor says that they cannot be faulted for majeed's wrong doings.

The three "innocent" pakis claim that they did not know that majeed was a bookie!!!

This case and the paki lying defences should form a case study at some management school!!

Pakis being...well, ... pakis.
Crime adds to misery for Pakistan's flood victims
In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa's provincial capital Peshawar, flour bags and tins of cooking oil bearing the logos of international aid agencies like the World Food Prgramme and USAID are openly on sale.
"It cannot happen without officials' involvement," said another shopkeeper, Rahimullah Khan. "Victims cannot bring a truck full of supplies here."
Further south in Punjab, villagers say people living outside flood-affected areas have stolen from houses abandoned by flood victims.
They stole washing machines, standing fans, refrigerators, small electrical devices, and jewelry
So, there's a blackmarket for fans and that's what we saw in those photos with people lugging away fans. Apparently they could have been stolen by enterprising paksi.

Non Resident RAPE paki appealing to west for not abandoing its whore to mullas who will sodomize him and take away his wife and property

We cannot afford to shun PakistanThe world must not abandon Pakistan to the religious extremists
Independent surveys show that over 90% of Pakistanis believe that religious extremism is the greatest single threat to the country. As someone said to me recently: "It seems that an extremist 3% are holding the other 97% to ransom." A close encounter with extremism and terrorism has made even previously sympathetic Pakistanis realise the mortal danger they are in. This must be taken into account when assessing the effects of the "war on terror" on Pakistani public opinion. It may not be as uniformly hostile to combating terrorism as is sometimes made out by the press. The means used and the time taken, as well as civilian casualties, are crucial in determining the direction in which public opinion will go.
Classical taquiya presented here. Which survey is the paki talking about? 90% still say India is the enemy not bunnies
For these reasons Pakistan should not be isolated from the mainstream of the international community. It is important also to make sure that ordinary Pakistanis remain in contact with the outside world. The response by the international community to the earthquake in Kashmir in 2005 was hugely appreciated by ordinary people in Pakistan. A generous and timely response to the recent floods is yet another sign that the world has not abandoned Pakistan, whether to natural disaster or to extremists.
so how was this appreciation shown by pakis? They enlisted haqqani and other bunnies to attack coalition forces. tried to bomb londonistan and then times square? They killed innocent people in Mumbai.
Pakistan will be a litmus test as to whether the international community and the Muslim world can halt the advance of extremist ideologies based on religion. It is vital for us to co-operate with those in Pakistan and elsewhere who have similar aims. These may be NGOs, universities, the media, women's and minority groups and, indeed, progressive elements in government. The world needs a stable, strong and moderate Pakistan, and so do its own citizens.
Now comes the blackmail if you dont help us you will lose muslim wold. What the F*** is mulim world and how are pakis the litmus test for these muslims?

Two intelligence officials say the Saturday evening strike targeted a house and a vehicle in a village near Miram Shah, the main town in North Waziristan.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information to the media. It was third such attack in the area in 24 hours.

eagerly waiting for more stuff to come out of this scandal

http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/news/94 ... World.html
This includes:

The News of the World publishing full details of the ENTIRE investigation starting in January this year including printing the transcripts of every meeting, conversation, email and text exchange.
An explosive claim by a member of the Pakistan touring team that some of his team-mates ARE cheats. Opening batsman Yasir Hameed tells us bent teammates were fixing "almost every match". He said: "They've been caught. Only the ones that get caught are branded crooks.
"They were doing it (fixing) in almost every match. God knows what they were up to. Scotland Yard was after them for ages.

"It makes me angry because I'm playing my best and they are trying to lose."
How the ICC are now probing a FOURTH Pakistan touring player over match-rigging claims. The News of the World is not naming this player for legal reasons.
The three suspended Pakistan players face a staggering TWENTY THREE ICC charges between them - each charge runs to six pages.

Exposing the rantings of the Pakistan High Commissioner who outrageously claimed that the News of the World had "set up" Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif
. CCTV evidence proves the meeting with fixer Mazhar Majeed took place before any "no balls" had been bowled. Dated receipts and emails also prove the money handover happened BEFORE the "no balls".
Pakistan Captain Salman Butt was warned FIVE TIMES about his responsibilities to report any irregular contact with outside agencies. And investigators have recovered between £10,000 and £15,000 of marked News of the World bills from the Pakistan captain's hotel room.

So the latest conspiracy in Pakistan is that Blackwater hijacked the ill fated Airblue plane and wanted to crash it on Kahuta, but the pious and patriotic pilot brought it down instead, killing everyone on board.

Convenient isn't it? 911 style plane crash, Pakistan's nuclear assassey (bums), airline hijacking, pilot doing a soosai - all rolled into one slick conspiracy theory that explains everything in one go!

Hmmm, Sounds to me like the guilty party (Pakistanis) are afraid that the americans will do an eye for an eye to them. They know that they did 911, and are afraid that payback of that job is in the pipeline.

Like they say back in India "Chor ki dadhi mein tinka".

Hameed denies newspaper revelations
Hameed, who played in two of the recent Tests against England, allegedly told the newspaper "almost every match" has been fixed and slammed his team-mates' actions. "They've been caught. Only the ones that get caught are branded crooks," he reportedly told the newspaper. "They were doing it [fixing] in almost every match.

"God knows what they were up to. Scotland Yard was after them for ages," he was quoted as saying. "It makes me angry because I'm playing my best and they are trying to lose."

However, when contacted by Cricinfo, Hameed flatly denied the story. "I have never spoken to the NOTW and I haven't said anything like this," he said. "I have been fully concentrating on my career and nothing else."

But wait a minute please.... NOTW releases the video where he actually says it.

Boy... What a load of fun seeing these Poakroaches trying to yap off to every one...The only problem is everyone around them is actually video taping them for NOTW.

And the allegations continue to pour in unabatedly ...

Pakistan match-fixing claims: player 'hid mobile phone in his helmet while waiting to bat'
A former Pakistan Test cricketer, who was told of the incident by this player's team-mate, has passed on the allegation to the International Cricket Council's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit. The use of mobile phones by players is strictly forbidden anywhere on the ground during an international match under ICC regulations designed to prevent communication between match-fixers and players.
The former Test cricketer, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, said he rang the ACSU hotline after being told recently of the claim by the current Pakistan player. The phone was hidden inside the right earpiece of the helmet of the player waiting to bat, he alleged.
"My reaction was one of disbelief," the former Test cricketer said on Saturday. "I had reason to suspect things were going on in international cricket, and you never had total confidence in certain games because of the rumours about match fixing and spot fixing. But when I was told about this player with the mobile inside his helmet, I was flabbergasted."
This revelation comes at the end of perhaps the most disturbing week cricket has seen in England, following last Sunday's newspaper allegations of spot fixing by three Pakistan players in the Lord's Test. Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif were all provisionally suspended by the ICC on Thursday evening after allegations of bowling deliberate no-balls in the fourth Test between England and Pakistan. They were questioned by police in London on Friday but were released without charge.
This afternoon the first of two Twenty20 internationals between England and Pakistan is due to take place in Cardiff. But officials from the ICC and the England and Wales Cricket Board were braced for further revelations last night by the News of the World which might put the series in jeopardy.
On Saturday, the Pakistan one-day captain, Shahid Afridi, apologised on behalf of Butt, Asif and Amir. "I think it is very bad news," he said in Cardiff. "I think on behalf of these players – I know they are not in this series – but on behalf of these boys I want to say sorry." He added that he had not spoken to them and had not asked if he could apologise on their behalf.
Meanwhile, the legal adviser of the Pakistan Cricket Board says the three suspended players have acknowledged the businessman at the centre of the fixing claims, Mazhar Majeed, is their agent – but have denied knowledge of any alleged wrongdoing by him. The News of the World accused Majeed last weekend of accepting money in exchange for organising Asif and Amir to bowl no-balls.
PCB legal adviser Tafazzul Rizvi also said on Saturday that the three would have to fight their cases on their own if they appeal against their suspension.

Can't afford IMF loans
"The loans acquired by previous governments by persuasion were not spent on development or in national interest but were mostly usurped by corrupt rulers. This happened due to absence of any monitoring by the donors and thus the nation is not liable to pay these loans," said Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (Kati) Chairman Razzak Hashim Paracha. "Pakistan needs grants and moratorium on loan repayment as the exchequer is not in a position to pay off huge loans which have crossed $54 billion."
